One of the only details I remember is that Eddie lost the only recording he had of his mother's voice. “옥상”

*옥상

내가 어릴적 살던 집은 3층짜리 빌라였다.

3층으로 오르는 계단을 지나면 옥상으로 통하는 문이 있었다.

조금 녹이슨 철문을 열면 초록빛으로 방수처리된 작은 옥상이 나왔다.

주변의 풀숲이나 작은 빌딩과 이질감을 주는 그 순간이 좋았다.

딱히 하는 것은 없었다.

나의 학창시절은 지루할 정도로 순탄했고, 방황의 시기를 겪을라 칠때면 옥상에서 부는 바람을 조금 빌릴 뿐이었다.

나는 너무나 작은 존재였고 옥상 역시 자그마한 곳이었다.

그냥 가끔 미끌거리는 바닥, 무거운 철문, 미묘한 공기, 그런 분위기로 도망치는 것 뿐만이 나의 선택지였다.

드라마나 영화속의 멋짐은 없었다.

그냥 작고 어색한 존재로 그 공간에 존재할 뿐이었는데,

조금 더 자란 지금도 어디로 도망쳐야할지 여전히 모르겠다.

나의 시간이 빗나간 채로 흐르는 걸 알면서도

딱히 나는 갈 길을 찾지도 않고, 도망칠 옥상조차 없는 지금을 보낸다.

*옥상

1. 관악구 어느 옥상에서 파티가 열렸었다. 나름 캠핑의자를 야외 테이블 주변에 깔아놓고 삼삼오오 모여앉아 신나게 맥주를 들이켰고 고기를 구웠다. 그 파티에 내가 좋아하는 (그리고 술을 무지 좋아하는) 친구를 데려갔고, 역시나 우린 마치 우리의 생일파티라도 되는 듯 신나게 떠들었고, 실컷 웃었다. 지금은 절대 다시 모일 수 없는 조합이기도 하고, 한 명 한 명 떠올려보면 무슨 조합인가 싶지만 그냥 나다운 조합이었다. 여기저기서 끌어모으길 좋아하는 내가 만든 괴상한 조합들.

2. '와 여기서 밤에 라면 끓여먹으면 진짜 맛있겠다!' 이사 간 후 옥상에 처음 올라가서 바로 외쳤다. 그렇게 행복하고 소소한 상상을 했지만 그 외침이 공중으로 흩어지면서 그 옥상을 다시 올라가는 일도 사라졌다. 옥상은커녕, 인상을 찌푸리고 많은 시간을 울다가 그곳을 떠났다.

1. 서울역에서 나와 옛 서울역 고가도로를 따라 만리재로 이어지는 길 위에는 꽤 많은 나무와 꽃이 있다. 다리위가 꼭 정원 같기도 하고 옥상 같기도 하다. 5월부터는 장미가 흐드러지게 피어있어서 걷는 동안 꽤 산뜻한 기분이 된다. 꼭 옛날에, 할아버지 살아계실 적 우리 집 옥상에 있는 듯한 느낌이다. 그때와 다른 것은 식물이 심어진 화분이 새빨간 고무대야 대신 콘크리트 화분이라는 것. 고추, 토마토, 대추, 양귀비, 쌈 채소들 대신 아름다운 꽃과 수형이 잘 잡힌 나무들이 가득하다는 것. 시야가 트여 답답함이 줄어드는 것과 장미가 피어있다는 점이 닮았을 뿐 기본적으로 차가 다녔었고 지금은 사람이 다니는 통행로라는 것. 쓰고 보니 같은 점은 사실 어디에도 없다. 그냥 그때 기분이 잠시 좋았던 것일지도.

2. 날씨가 좋을 때라 그런지 남의 집 옥상에 초대되는 일이 잦아졌다. 바닥들이 하나같이 초록색 에폭시로 뒤덮인 친숙한 옥상인데도 조명을 달고 캠핑 장비들을 펼쳐두고 이름을 루프탑 혹은 루프탑 테라스 파티라고 하니 꽤나 있어 보인다. 가져온 술과 음식을 나누고, 이야기하고 떠들고, 실상은 캠핑 가서 하던 일들을 똑같이 할 뿐인데도 기분이 묘하게 다르다. 캠핑장처럼 모두 다 같이 한가한 장소에서 한가한 것과 일상을 사는 사람들 틈 속에서 나만 한가한 것의 차이라고 할까. 낯선 동네의 길거리와 제각기 다른 방향으로 걷는 사람들을 가만히 내려다보는 일이 꼭 여행지에서 느긋하게 쉬는 사람이 된 것 같은 기분을 느끼게 한다. “옥상만 있으면 오도이촌이 따로 없어~” 하는 말을 들으니 진짜 그런가~ 싶다.

시원한 바람과 개방감, 속이 뻥 뚫리는 곳. 무엇을 해도 자유로운 곳. 장소라고 말하기도 적절하지 않은 어떤 공간.
