Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of
In celebration of AJ’s birthday, I’m taking a trip down memory lane! So many moons ago, we were blessed when five young men came together to form the Backstreet Boys. History was made and the rest was, well, history. AJ Mclean is my absolute favorite Boy, bar none. Everything from his sultry voice to his fashion styling to those adorable brown peepers, this man has been a true constant in my life and I’ve been all the more fortunate for that.
From the first day

Alexander James McLean came into this world 39 years ago on this day in January. He was and still is my first and everlasting musical love. It was the summer of 1998 and I was just a few weeks shy of turning thirteen. Back then, I loved my Walkman. It went everywhere with me. I would fall asleep listening to the radio every night, waking up long enough just to switch it off and tug off my earphones before going back to bed. One night, I got up to go use the bathroom (yes, the Walkman went with me into the bathroom...fear not, I set it down on the counter.) I was in the middle of drying my hands when I heard the most incredible voice come pouring out of my earphones.
Now I’m reasonably certain that that was not the first time I had heard “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” on the radio, but something about that night made the song seem brand new. I was completely and utterly mesmerized by AJ’s voice. It was sultry, seductive, yet so full of soul and passion. You believed him when he said he would never break your heart. I literally stood in my bathroom with a towel in my hand in the middle of the night listening to this song and it felt like my heart had exploded. I was so in love after that moment.

I was a complete goner when the music video for “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” first debuted on TRL a couple of months later. When he lowered his shades and the brightest brown eyes peered over, I felt like he was talking straight into my soul.

Nearly 20 years later and not much has changed. If anything, my love and admiration for AJ only grew in leaps and bounds, only now some of that love encompasses the other four men that he calls his brothers. Highs and lows...thick through thin, we journeyed and survived through everything as a fan-mily.
Summer 2001 was a particularly rough patch. I was away in Hong Kong and Taiwan for much of the summer, so you can imagine my absolute devastation upon finding out about AJ being in rehab nearly a month after the fact. To add insult to injury, I had to find out from one of those trashy tabloids I came across at the airport. 15+ hours and a terminal departure delay later, I was finally back home and back in the know. I watched TRL obsessively for any news, always crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I cried watching the Boys officially announce his rehab stay. My heart was hurting so badly for him, for the Boys and for all the people his work inspired.
AJ came back, better than ever. He always does. He’s a survivor and a fighter, a dreamer and a doer. He taught us that it’s okay to not be okay, that we can cry and feel sad as long as we remember to get up the next day and try again. Bad things happen to good people. Our demons do not define us. Rather, it is our reactions to these events that help shape and guide us. Rise from the ashes or get buried.

I am so excited for what 2017 will have in store for AJ and the Boys. The Vegas residency is an amazing opportunity to test the market and the response so far has been off the charts. They have blown the roof off of every show they played at during the latter half of 2016, generating headlines and explosive responses.
Also, baby McLean is almost here!! Oh my gosh, doesn’t your heart just melt thinking about AJ and all his girls together?! It’s fun to giggle about Backstreet Boys 2.0 with the Boys and their mini-mes, but honestly, I am so so happy he has little girls. They always say a girl’s first love is her father and AJ makes for the bestest first love ever.
So here’s to a wonderful and exciting start to 2017! Happy Birthday, Alexander James McLean! May all your wishes and dreams come true. I can't wait to continue on this journey with you for another 20 years!
