romantic parallels romantic parallels ROMANTIC PARALLELS
again, the name of the game is desperation. The pastor's wife from Faith was desperate to save her husband, this guy's desperate to save his wife, and at the end of the season Dean's desperate to save the life of the one person he loves more than anything in this world, bar none. And that love? That desperation? It leads them straight into evil's arms.
"I'd've died for her on the spot." The look Dean gives him is a solemn understanding. He knows his dad did it for him and he knows that without a doubt he would do it for Sam in a heartbeat.
There's only one thing Dean won't do for Sam, and that's let him die (whether Sam wants to or not)

sorry. a girl gives dean her myspace address while she's hitting on him and he doesn't know what it is. a) technologically unsavvy king and b) just got sucked into some sort of time vortex and remembered how old this show is

rewatched 2x8 (Crossroad Blues) and I forgot how close Dean comes to trading in his own soul to bring John back when the demon gives him the chance. He wants it so bad that if he hadn’t been on a hunt with an innocent life to save it’s hard to think he would have held out. He can’t even lie to Sam about it at the end. This is when Dean is at his angriest at John, when he’s still grappling with John’s last words to him, when he’s a couple episodes away from “I didn’t deserve everything he put on me,” and all the simmering resentment of seasons 2-5 and STILL. He loves John that much. He misses him that much. He feels so very guilty and wants his Dad back and he’s seriously, seriously tempted to give his soul for 10 more good years with him—as the demon puts it. And I think that’s crucial in understanding Dean and John and it gets lost sometimes in the analysis of all that resentment. Yes Dean had a terrible childhood and fucked up relationship with John and a big part of his early seasons arc is coming to grips with that. But he also loved John SO MUCH and to me that makes that arc hit so much harder. Because I don’t think he ever stopped.

SPN 2X8 Crossroad Blues
les gooooo
Already the guitar music is really making me happy, blues guitar is so hard and so fun
ok and there’s...wolves
that was a cool shot with the guitar
i’m a slut for guitars ok, leave me alone
and he leaves it and runs
symbolism~
Sam: Dean we’re in the FBI Database
Dean: ha jealous aren’t you
and he’s right
ah so his partner had some Beef
so he wasn’t good, and then he ended up being good...
oh my god they traded their lives for talent, but then died young
“all the geniuses die young” OH OH O HO HO
god I hope they play “only the good die young” I know they probably won’t but it would work so well
DEAN DOESN’T KNOW WHAT MYSPACE IS IM CRYING
ok so doctor lady sees the guys head melting?? MELTING?
and it’s centered at the bar? that’s...wait I’m not expecting that
AND THE BAR IS AT A CROSSROADS?
oh my god wait...there’s plot, the plot is actually thickening
oh a DEMON?
A P A C T?
look, while I’m not sold on the fact that it’s always christianity, GOD IS IT COOL
IT’S HELLHOUNDS
I spose if u have to pick a mythology for America, it does have to be christianity but that doesn’t mean I have to like it
ah so we see how he summons the demon
and it’s a pretty girl who kisses him because of course
listen at its core you can tell who wrote it, even if the concepts are interesting
of course Dean knows the songs of the guy(Robert johnson)
intimately, he fucking listened to the music and noticed the occult references
this man breathes the life
also the occult titles slap, I wanna hear more blues guitar
Dean wants to let them do the thing on their own, Sam’s like no we gotta save them
ah so the victim? guy? agrees with Dean
“who doesn’t want their life to mean something” ouch
it wasn’t worth it
and he didn’t get famous
Famous is the big thing
OH it’s a demon, of course Sam takes it personally
this guy looks like draco malfoy
the loneliness he had while finishing the painting, the guilt over enabling three other deaths
holy hot damn this episode is fun
I mean...not fun exactly but
HIS WIFE TURNING INTO A HELL-THING MADE ME FLINCH SO HARD OH MY GOD THE ADRENALINE IN MY SYSTEM
Dean for fuck’s sake was that your plan
Dean’s incredibly glib about this, I feel like he’s gonna have a Moment at the end of the episode
it’s funny how most people agree with Dean, “I made the deal, I take the consequences”
OH so he did it to save his wife from cancer
And then never told her, I feel like highlighting it is Important
OH making a deal, it’s what killed his dad
Boy’s Club Literacy 100
why the fuck do i like this type of cinema so much
I WAS RIGHT
Ah that’s why it’s personal
here we go, time for Aggressively Flirty Demon
I don’t know how I feel about this trope, but I do know it is a trope
Dean you self-sacrificial IDIOT I HATE YOU
Only John Winchester could save his kids and MAKE THEM MORE TRAUMATIZED IN THE PROCESS
JOHN YOU’RE PARADOXICALLY GONNA GET YOUR KIDS KILLED SO HARD
YOU FUCKING IDIOT STOP BEING A BAD DAD POSTHUMOUSLY HOW DID YOU EVEN DO THAT
I love how Sam just jumps into the circle when vaguely threatened
Dean do not make that deal I swear to God
DEAN
NO CUT BACK TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED
NO WHAT DO YOU MEAN THINGS STOPPED WHAT DID HE DO
so ten years must be the cut-off
AH and using the “your family is all together” thing he’s been going for since season 1
the “supposed to be” alive and dead? but isn’t? something about that is scratching the Itch
HE GOT HER IN A TRAP! HE MUST HAVE SEEN IT COMING
the cut to the kiss...was...very strange
somehow Evan Hudson works better than his dad or him
Self sacrificial bastard
ah so John is in hell As He Should Be
I do like the question of Legacy, and how yknow, if you teach people, you can impact the world after death
if only it wasn’T JOHN FUCKING WINCHESTER
Sam: you never considered making that deal
Dean: *BLARES THE MUSIC*
Of course he did Sam, he's a self sacrificial bastard
what...the fuck...is this ending...with the virus...what...is happening
is this a...cut...trailer..PUT INTO THE EPISODE
I am aware that I’m supposed to be getting excited but why did they shoot it like that
wrap-up!
1. Ok I LOVED the bait-and-switch with the demon, the crossroads, the fact that theoretically anyone can summon it, just. The lore was SO COOL in this episode. And yeah, I’m pissed at how it’s Always Christianity, but this episode was very American Dream-y so yeah ofc christianity is gonna be in there
speaking of
2. THE AMERICAN DREAM! the loneliness, the desire for excellence that goes so far to literally sell your soul for it. The first half of the episode and those themes and visuals are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and HOTDAMN I LOVE THE BLUES
seriously, I get the second half was Plot, and whatever, but that first half? immaculate, I had so much fun
3. Dean’s a self-sacrificial jaded bastard, but to be fair I knew that. Sam’s WAY more of an idealist, but we also kind of knew that. Seeing them clash(especially with no Harvelle’s roadhouse these last few episodes) has been really interesting, and I’m excited to see where it goes for the next few seasons
4. I am so sad they didn’t use “only the good die young” but the theme and focal point vastly changed, and so I understand, it didn’t make sense. I was still disappointed.
I truly feel like HBO Supernatural wouldn’t do this to us
tonal consistency is king, but it can’t happen on network television
4.5. also teeny thing, I love how Sam knew what MySpace was, but Dean knows the old blues songs. I like it when they’re different in like..normal human ways, I feel like it humanizes them+makes me relate to them way more.
5. oh also I did genuinely get jump-scared because they didn’t do it that often and it through me. Love that Adrenaline in my system.

Supernatural Rewatch 02x08
Crossroad Blues
(Next Episode | Masterlist | Previous Episode)
Crossroad Demon deals! This is one of those episodes that kinda feels like a filler but introduces very important world building and also has a lot of good exploration of emotions. They find out that the deaths they are investigating are the result of making demon deals and Dean feels like it’s not their job to interfere, but Sam wants to save the people anyway
SAM We've gotta figure out if anyone else struck any bargains around here.
DEAN Great. So we've gotta clean up these peoples' mess for 'em? I mean, they're not exactly squeaky clean. Nobody put a gun to their head and forced 'em to play Let's Make A Deal.
SAM So what, we should just leave them to die?
DEAN Somebody goes over Niagara in a barrel, you gonna jump in and try to save 'em?
This is a good example of Dean being an enneagram type 8 and Sam being an enneagram type 2:
“Twos tend to see things from the points of view of others, while Eights … [feel] that others need to learn to take care of themselves lest they become weak and ineffectual.” (source) As a type eight, Dean is easily frustrated when other people blatantly make decisions that work against their own self-interest, while Sam as a type two, wants to understand the people who made these deals and help them in any way possible.
Further into the episode, it starts to get more personal for Dean though. He was annoyed at people who would sell their souls for money or renown, but then they meet Evan, who sold his soul to save his dying wife, it hits a little too close to home:
DEAN Did you ever think about her in all this?
EVAN I did this for her.
DEAN You sure about that? I think you did it for yourself. So you wouldn't have to live without her. But guess what? She's going to have to live without you now. But what if she knew how much it cost? What if she knew it cost your soul? How do you think she'd feel?
As with a lot of the things Dean says in 02x04, this conversation works as both an insight into Dean’s guilt and grief over the death of his father, as well as ironic foreshadowing for the decision he makes at the end of the season. In both cases, it drives home the consequences of self-sacrifice. It’s part of the constant struggle of this show. One person puts their life on the line to save another, who in turn sacrifices themselves to save the first and on and on.
I was surprised that the demons already recognize a Winchester on sight, but I guess they are already aware of the plans in motion (or at least, partially aware)
DEMON I'm not going to put you out of your misery.
DEAN Yeah? Why not?
DEMON Because your misery's the whole point. It's too much fun to watch. Knowing how your daddy died for you, how he sold his soul. I mean, that's gotta hurt. It's all you ever think about. You wake up and your first thought is, "I can't do this anymore." You're all lit up with pain. I mean, you loved him so much. And it's all your fault. You blew it, Dean! I could have given you what you need.
DEAN What do I need?
DEMON Your father.
This conversation has Chuck vibes, enjoying watching Dean’s misery ….
Anyway!
Dean’s struggle with the memory of his father is interesting and complex and I appreciate it. It’s not clear cut, he misses his dad, but he’s mad at him, but he doesn’t want to live without him, but he wishes he’d been raised differently … it’s all mixed up in there. For Sam it seems a little more direct (He didn’t get along with his dad while he was alive, now he feels guilty and wishes there was a way to make up for it) but Dean keeps going through these rollercoasters of emotions. And they show later that in this particular scene Dean is just trying to keep the Demon talking so he can lure her into the trap, you can tell that it’s a tempting offer … to sell his soul for his father’s.
(also, it’s weird to think about like … if Dean had made a deal in this episode and their lives hadn’t gotten super crazy, then it would have been around season 11 that the hell hounds would come to collect …)
But now they know for sure that John sold his soul for Dean:
DEAN How could he do it?
SAM He did it for you.
DEAN Exactly. How am I supposed to live with that? You know, the thought of him... wherever he is right now. I mean, he spent his whole life chasing that... yellow-eyed son of a bitch. He should have gone out fighting. That was supposed to be his legacy. You know? Not bargaining with the damn thing. Not this.
So much guilt that Dean does not deserve ☹
The ending of this episode actually confused me because … Dean kissed the demon (sealed the deal) and the Hell Hounds didn’t kill Evan … so did Dean make the deal with her? Did he sell his soul to be collected in 10 years and just … when he makes the deal for Sam for 1 year it just kinda negates that? I would love for clarification because I think I missed something. Does this demon ever try to collect?
