In the interest of putting effort into tumblr, here’s a photo of my car. Her name is Phoebe, she is a 1966 Ford Thunderbird hardtop coupe, and I like her very much despite her frequent state of being broken somehow but also almost reliable?? There used to be a popular website called DRIVETRIBE, where I wrote an article about daily driving this car as a teenager in 2018, which was quite successful although the website no longer exists. I rebuilt the engine in my senior year of high school, drove her to my one year of college during the pandemic, and now only drive her around the neighborhood because most of the electrics stopped working. My stubborn refusal to sell her coupled with the steep price of used cars now means she’ll probably continue to be a big part of my life for years to come.

Station Wagon Dreams: The 1964 Ford Aurora

The fabulous Detroit dream car era brought a flood of coupe, sedan, and convertible concepts, while station wagons were relatively rare. Ford took an interesting stab at the category with the 1964 Aurora show car.Introduced at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, where the 1965 Mustang also made its famous debut, the Aurora show car was designed to show consumers what a station wagon of the near future might be like. A rolling “luxury lounge,” in the words of Ford design vice-president Gene Bordinat, the Aurora was loaded with forward-looking comfort and convenience ideas—23 in all, according to the Dearborn automaker.

Ford, a traditional industry leader in the station wagon category, was losing ground to General Motors and Chrysler by the early ’60s, a problem the Aurora was intended to address. One noteworthy design wrinkle was the clamshell rear tailgate, employing a carpeted lower section that doubled as a booster stair for tiny passengers (top photo and above). The generous 131-inch wheelbase allowed for plenty of interior volume, which was  thematically divided into three sections: a rearmost area (with glass partition) for children, a mobile lounge in the center, and the driver cockpit in the front. A single rear-passenger door was located on the right side.

Many of the Aurora’s novel features were found in its greenhouse, above. The front section of the roof incorporated a power-operated polarizing glass panel, while the rear portion housed a flow-through ventilation system, and the halo bar between them was designed to provide rollover protection. Exterior lighting was electroluminescent throughout (“cold light” in the lingo of the day) with a band of one-inch sealed-beam units providing the headlamp array.

Easily the most dramatic feature on the Aurora wagon was its wraparound, lounge-style seating arrangement, below. The pedestal-mounted front passenger bucket could be turned around to face the boomerang sofa in the second row, with a communications and entertainment console located directly behind the pilot’s seat. Driver aids included an aircraft-type steering wheel and an analog navigation system with a rolling map built into the instrument panel.

While the supper-club seating layout never made it into production—for the obvious safety and packaging reasons, we presume—the theme was duplicated on the Aurora II, a 1969 Ford concept based on a standard LTD Country Squire wagon. And in more modest, practical form, of course, the wraparound rear-seat styling was used to striking effect on the production 1964 Thunderbird.

Track 5: Delicate, YNTCD, and other connections

In the You Need to Calm Down music video, Hayley Kiyoko scores a bullseye on the number 5, which we are linking to Track 5 on Lover. However, if this is a clue to Lover’s track 5, or reputation’s track 5, remains to be seen.

Delicate was track 5 on reputation, and Delicate is our LGBTQ+ coming out anthem that Taylor specifically dedicated to the community and represented pride flag dresses while performing the song on tour, and even giving her first ever pride speech before performing Delicate in Chicago on June 2nd, 2018. On Taylor’s recent Entertainment Weekly cover where she teased easter eggs for her 7th album, she wore a pin that says “Track 5.” 

At the end of the Delicate music video, the last video of the reputation era, we see Taylor dancing in the rain, heading to a bar where she meets the unknown lover who passed her a note in the beginning of the video. Before Taylor goes into the bar, we see a mysterious shot of a car in the upper righthand corner of the frame:

The car was digitally edited into the above shot. 

Look familiar? it’s eerily similar to a Ford Thunderbird, the car used in the kaylor Vogue shoot:

In the beginning of the You Need to Calm Down video, we see Taylor set a trailer on fire, and she leaves the trailer carrying a daisy with her (we all know what the daisy means). Many people think this trailer is the one from the vogue shoot, but thanks to this excellent post, we see the trailer from the vogue shoot is elsewhere in the music video:

The “kaylor trailer” in YNTCD is the location of the LGBTQ+ community being unfazed as protesters scream in their faces. As stated in the post linked, the trailer is an Airstream. Who confirmed that the YNTCD trailer Taylor is lying in front of while ignoring the hate from homophobic protestors is actually an Airstream?

To further connect Delicate (a song dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and the delicacy of coming out) to YNTCD, at the end of the Delicate video, Taylor goes into the Golden Gopher and has this “It’s You!” look on her face when she finds the lover she is looking for:

At the end of YNTCD, Taylor is searching for someone in the same way we see her searching in Delicate. She spots Katy and has her, “It’s You!” moment:

While Taylor and Katy have their sweet embrace, we still flash back to images of the protesters who are looking at Taylor and Katy, still screaming at them that homosexuality is a sin. This is occurring WHILE Taylor and Katy are slowly embracing and looking at each other lovingly!!!

Back to Track 5. In the Delicate video, Taylor is seen at the subway station with the words “Track 5″ written in graffiti behind her. Three days after the Delicate video came out, Karlie posted a photo of her at the subway, with the number five, asking, “You looking at me?”

The “Track 5″ pin on Taylor’s Entertainment Weekly cover is identical to the aesthetic from the Delicate video:

This has me thinking that the 5 bullseye in YNTCD has less to do with Lover’s track 5, but more to do with DELICATE. After all, who shot the bullseye?

Add in the fact that Bucky’s been secretly in love with Steve since the thirties and things only get harder. Learning to be a person is the hardest thing Bucky Barnes will ever have to do–but he’s got company along the way.
