Because my last friendly reminder post did so well...
Y’all need to chill with the ‘2012 Turtle are all abusive expect Mikey!” posts
Yes, there are episodes where they’re extra mean, it’ll happen if a show runs long enough.
But 2012 Raph loves his little brother.
Tumblr media
(He’s the first to comfort Mikey after the whole Bradford fiasco)
Tumblr media
(helping Mikey with trash talk. I think this bit is cute tbh)
Tumblr media
(The absolute PANIC on his face when Mikey jumps off a roof)
Tumblr media
(threatening Leatherhead, a gator 3x his size that has kicked all there asses twice, because he’s worried he’ll hurt Mikey)
His brothers have also been overly mean to him.
Tumblr media
(The training scene in Turtle Temper. I know you were trying to teach a lesson Splints but yikes, that got personal)
Tumblr media
(And the guys, *cough* mostly Mikey, picking on him about his fear of roaches)
Tumblr media
(and using him to bait out said roach that ACTIVELY wants to kill him)
This isn’t even close to a full list but you get the point.
And the Rise boys can be overly mean to each other.
Tumblr media
(They went too far with bringing Mrs. Cuddles to the Lair to scare Raph...even without the secretly a demon part)
And I don’t remember the episode but I do know Raph smacked Donnie once in Rise when DonTron told Splinter they were having a ‘non-mystic day’
The show got sped up so a lot of the episodes towards the end were mainly focused on the Shredder plot, so the show didn’t have enough time to have episodes where the cast acts a little OOC to build a plot around.
And I know, I know, ‘Siblings shouldn’t hit each other!’
Not with malice, no. But I have a lot of sibs, there’s 8 of us, and we rough house with each other, we grab and smack and poke and rib at each other because we all know the others boundary and trust them to tell us if we’re going to far.
Rise Turtles and 12 Turtles have different sibling dynamics, and there both valid dynamics so chill out and enjoy the silly mutant ninja show.

Okay so you said Rise Leo is your favorite, but it took a good bit of time for him to get to that spot. It sounds like there’s a story there, and I’m curious. Would you mind sharing?
Hi Crow! There is a bit of a story.
I'm going to be completely honest, I did not like ROTTMNT when it first came out. It was so different from 2012, 2003, and the 2007 movie, and I didn't like that when I was younger. Because of all the differences, Rise Leo was my least favorite out of the turtles. 2007 Leo/2012 Leo were my all time favorites at the time, so it was hard for me to accept this silly boy. Looking back, I have no clue why my younger self didn't give ROTTMNT a chance, because this show rocks!
When I finally got into ROTTMNT and accepted that every iteration is going to have big and small differences, it quickly became my favorite iteration. Why? Because I find all the turtles and April very relatable, the 2D animation is one of my favorite styles, and all the lore and stories in the show are so well told. For the longest time, Rise Donnie was my favorite, and he's still up there for me.
But why is Rise Leo my favorite now? Because I relate to him the most out of the four brothers and I love his dynamic in the show. Of course not fighting bad guys and stopping an alien invasion, but his struggle to find his purpose in both his family and in team, his "it'll be fine"/laid back attitude towards his problems and things in general (excluding things that he is passionate about [as it is for me too]), his relationships with his siblings, his struggle with taking on leadership responsibilities (out of fear of failing his team), the endless amount of jokes and references he makes, the love and care he has for his family, his times of a younger sibling being a menace, his struggle with guilt and his problem of blaming himself, him being a silly guy, his problems solving skills and ability to think outside the box, his stubbornness, his determination, and many many more things about him I relate with. I could talk about him for hours and hours.
Yeah... This blue boy really is my favorite character, not just turtle.
Tumblr media
Thanks for asking Crow!

i love the 2012 series, and i found myself saying the same things when rise came out. the fans make them out to be a healthier family dynamic with much more flashy animation. the 2012 boys have their problems, but who doesnt? they love each other, theyre always hugging or touching each other in some way, or just hanging out together. i think it comes from the 2012 series being a lot more serious than rise and so fans of rise take that seriousness to mean abusive
The thing that has always confused me about this argument is that the Rise family isn't completely wholesome. They do some really fucked up things to each other. It's all played for laughs, but so are a lot of the gags in the 2012 series as well. And I'm not saying this to demonize Rise either, I don't think that I would call their dynamics "abusive" at all. They act like close buddies, which is accurate for a brother relationship. In the 2012 series, they have a different dynamic, but they still act like siblings.
I have two younger siblings. I grew up with them, watched TV with them, played games with them, hell, I grew up watching TMNT 2012 with them. And boy, they irritated the shit out of me. There were moments when they made me furious, made me upset. And then there were moments where I made them upset on purpose. There are still moments when they make me want to tear my hair out even as an adult. And you know what? I love both of them more than life itself. I care so deeply about both of them and I think about them all the time. I want them to be happy and safe.
Now, I don't want to say every sibling relationship is like the one I have. But I think a lot of people would describe their sibling relationship like this. It can be messy, and you don't always get along, but at the end of the day, you still love them. I think that TMNT 2012 absolutely nails this dynamic, including the nuances and complexities of sibling relationships. I absolutely adore this about the show, and it always broke my heart that people disregarded the way the brothers are written in this show.
I want to give a special shoutout to the dynamic between my two favorite characters: Raph and Mikey. Ironically, this is the dynamic people claim is the most abusive. Raph can be a bitch. He can be cruel to his brothers and go way too far. But that's the point of his character. He's a moody teen with insecurities, and he also gets plenty of character development by the end of the show. Mikey can be an annoying little shit. He antagonizes his brothers on purpose and can mess things up. However, he's misunderstood by his brothers and his mind works in a way that's unique to him.
I have never believed that you are supposed to agree with Raph when he mistreats his brothers, particularly Mikey. And he can be way too hard on Mikey. However, he also loves Mikey so much. He becomes enraged if Mikey gets hurt, and is willing to put himself in danger to save him. Likewise, Mikey comforts Raph in tough situations and goes to him for comfort. We see them hang out and mess around with each other. Their relationship is exactly what you would expect from an overprotective, moody older brother and a well-meaning, but annoying, little brother. It's meaningful, interesting, and above all, feels like a sibling relationship.
And I would argue that each member of the TMNT has their own complicated and fun dynamics with each other, that are super intriguing to watch. I love TMNT 2012 for a number of reasons. It's a whacky cartoon where four turtles fight a cheese grater. Most of all, I love the way it depicts family, and it's super fun watching the brothers interact. It does have flaws, of course, but I personally believe it has far more strengths. I think the constant 2012 hate that has piled up over the years has made people ignore all the good this show has accomplished--and that's a damn shame.

Little mini rant because I'm tired of people constantly shitting on the brotherly dynamics in the 2012 teenage mutant ninja turtle verse and putting the 2018 dynamic on a pedestal 24/7:
The dynamic of the brothers in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is very different from its 2018 Rise counterpart for a number of reasons. Both a product of their environment in universe and the time each show was made in. I've noticed a difference in how siblings are portrayed in media then vs now. A lot of more quote on quote "healthy" sibling relationships are present today more sensitive to each other and less touch averse and scared to openly show affection. But is it necessarily better or simply more ideal? The answer is no. Every sibling dynamic is different from another and no two or alike. This does not make one better or valid than the next and the same goes for the turtle brothers.
The 2018 brothers never had to necessarily vy for Splinter's attention growing up, any and all attention received was a positive given he didn't really give his sons the time of day for better or for worse. The 2012 brothers from what I've observed are often subtly pit against one another the tensions between them because of this and expectations of them high. But despite everything at the end of the day its clear both groups care deeply and greatly for one another, its just more rare for one to show it than another because of how they grew up.
Anyone who's had siblings have most likely have had toxic moments or moments of frustration and all express it differently. No sibling relationship is going to be perfect. So one portrayal of the brothers isn't more realistic or better than the other, just different at the end of the day.

hey i’m rewatching 2012 (again) and one thing i’m noticing is that the writers and producers of each episode REALLY have an impact on how much i enjoy it. (note: i looked up the writers after noticing i enjoyed the episode)
in particular, i’m gonna talk about Metalhead Rewired
so the producer/writer is Ant Ward, who if you’re unfamiliar is one of the main producers of Rise of the TMNT.
obviously i’m a bit biased as Rise is one of my favorites and i’m not too fond with how 2012 tends to handle the dynamics and relationships. take everything i say with a grain of salt.
but my sister (and later my two other siblings) all watched it and we agree that the vibe is different from the usual 2012 episodes. some of the things that stuck out:
- Metalhead grabbing mikey’s face was a reused joke throughout the episode, but besides that, mikey isn’t hit by any of his brothers.
- mikey isn’t even hit by raph. not even when he’s being silly and got his hand stuck in the vending machine. raph seems annoyed but not angry, and he definitely doesn’t smack mikey for it. the interaction seemed way more healthy than the usual “mikey says/does something silly -> raph smacks him” (majority of the silly things he says/does come across as very obnoxious but this one wasn’t as bad. again, my opinion)
- the leo/donnie argument over metalhead’s behavior/programming was refreshing! i could see a bit of both their sides in the argument. most importantly, though, there was really minimal yelling. (i’m writing this a couple days after watching it and i can’t recall any of them yelling at each other)
- the pacing of the episode overall didn’t feel rushed or too full of details. some of the previous episodes (the krang conspiracy) seemed to have an overload of information dumped onto the audience, and the action seemed very fast paced and almost hard to follow. in metalhead rewired, the concept stood out and it didn’t feel too overwhelming with info or action.
- mikey being the only one able to open the portal was actually hilarious. my siblings and i usually don’t laugh out loud at the jokes in 2012 but this one was genuinely funny. i’m still not impressed with how it was a porta potty and they had to add the fart noises but the rest of the joke was fine
- splinter didn’t yell at his sons? or hit them? amazing. didn’t realize it was possible.
- actually that whole interaction was cute, ngl. splinter asking why the door was locked and the other three all giving vague excuses before mikey blurts out the truth. i can always appreciate an honest mikey. and splinter just going “…teenagers” when they leave? yes. this is FATHER splinter.
- i always love the krang in this show. the way they talk gets me every time. their plan was also solid and made sense. again, not an overload of information. the krang are kidnapping mutants to control them. it’s not an overwhelming plot to follow.
all in all, i did enjoy watching this episode. i know my rants in the past have been pretty harsh on the show (and like… that is how i feel), but it’s good to know that not all the writers leaned on the toxic interactions for the turtles
anyway if you read this, here’s a leaf 🍂

9 Reasons Why People Might (and CAN) Ship Apritello in Rise!
1). It kind of follows the "childhood friends to lovers" trope. Usually from all the anime (and occasionally cartoons and other types of media) that I've watched, there's a "friends to lovers" trope and/or "childhood friends to lovers" trope. It's usually when...welll...when friends start to feel romantic feelings towards each other, become a couple or start to date. Usually when that's the case, the friends usually have good interactions or/and know each other more personally than anyone else does. Usually those main things are enough to make a relationship. 2). Even if they do start dating, I don't think things will change THAT much. Maybe some sweet and cute couple moments every now and then, but besides that, does Donnie and April HAVE to be lovey-dovey like every couple media tends to portray pairings these days? Donnie and April can just watch Netflix and chill. Have fun and hang out like they normally do? I see them as just teens who do what they want and don't follow couple clichés. They might date or be a couple, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still friends.  3). Interspecies relationships have happened before in shows. Though I haven't personally watched shows that did have interspecies relationships, I know they exist. So why Rise should be an exception? And NO. Apritello is NOT bestiality. In 2012, April is half-muntant/kraang and there’s a possibly that Donnie MIGHT have human DNA too from Splinter. In Rise, Donnie does have human DNA inside him from Splinter.
And EVEN IF one or both of them weren’t half mutant/human, it STILL isn’t bestiality. Bestiality is when a human is in a relationship with an animal basically (just look up the real definition if you want to know). Donnie is a mutant turtle (a mutant with human DNA in Rise). He also has a consenting mind. So at best, it’s a interspecies relationship. Now if you personally still don’t like the pair because you personally don’t like interspecies relationships neither, then that’s your preference and I respect that. However, I still think interspecies is LEAUGES better than bestiality in my opinion.  4). Their adorable babies and they generally look cute together. Nuff said ^^ Donnie and April reminds me of the famous "opposites attract" trope too. April, the feisty, headstrong tomboy with the cleaver, sass master Donnie is just interesting dynamic to me. Their personalities compliment each other. Their flaws and virtues compliment each other. I just belive they work well together. Also, angst possibilities. LOTS of angst possibilities. Just saying...
5).  Most Apritello (or April x Turtles) haters/T///cest shippers are total shallow hypocrites. Like I’ve mentioned before, It really baffles me and annoys me that TMNT fans look down on others for shipping Apritello (or any other April x Turtles pairing) just because they personally see (or always saw) April being a big sister to the guys when the same kind of people are perfectly fine with shipping T///cest, pairings that involve the turtles together. At least people who don’t ship neither have the excuse that they see all the teens as siblings and it’s wrong to see them as anything else, but AT LEAST April and the turtles aren’t REALLY related. Like I said, sometimes people who grew up together/childhood friends DO and CAN get together.
Now...People who ship t///cest...that’s THEIR business (I personally despise it). They can stay in their corner and I can stay in mine. Heck, people even have the right to dislike Apritello from any incarnation (especially by 2012 Apritello’s track record), but don’t you dare criticize or looked down on others who do like it when t///cest in that logic isn’t that much better. Now, I personally like 2012 Apritello (or at least mostly the fandom version of it) and I honestly take some interest in the Rise version of it too (however, this one has less attention and love), but if someone else just personally doesn’t like it, that’s perfectly fine too. However, the point that I’m making is that I wish that people don’t be so shallow when it comes to the very little people who does ship Apritello in this incarnation. People liking Apritello isn’t a bad thing. It’s just the way it has to be handled.
BTW: I can also get people disliking Apritello in the 80’s series and the 2003 series because April was in her 20’s, but in the 2012 and 2018/Rise series she isn’t! She’s 16.
6). You can ship what the hell you want.
I know Rise! Apritello mostly comes from that fact that it was a thing in 2012, but so? People still have the right to ship it. Also, it seems like they have at least some kind of development or chemistry. Now, I’m not going to lie. The chances of them being a couple or even having ANY KIND of romantic feelings in this series is slim because:
1. It’s a kids show. It’s more of a silly/comedy kid show than any of the other previous TMNT incarnations ever were. So this incarnation of TMNT might not be suitable for actaul romantic themes. I mean, there’s the “romantic”/complicated relationship between Splinter and Big Mama, but that’s about it.
2. Again, it’s a kids show....about kids and their (mis)adventures. April is 16 and Donnie is 14. I doubt that romance is a big thing for them right now at this point in their lives. Not to say crushes can’t happen, but...yeah.
3. April most likely sees Donnie as a brother and vise versa. In fact, it WAS confirmed that April sees all the turtles that way. Also, most Rise fans sees them as such, even before Rise began.
4. I know some don’t find a problem with this (including myself), but Donnie is a mutant turtle while April is a human girl. So people might find that weird or claim it is bestiality (even though it’s not). Hence part of the reason why I think one of the creators/writers said this. Speaking of...
5. Seems like they don’t ship it romantically. Heck, they even claim that others (or 2012 Donnie’s crush on April, it’s really unclear) as “pervy” for it (which I disagree, but I digress).
HOWEVER, despite all this said, who’s to say that anyone still CAN’T ship it? HECK, who even says that the possibility is COMPETELY off the table? You see that I said the possibility of them happening or having any romantic feelings for each other are SLIM, not INPOSSIBLE. Like I said above, I’m one of the those people who watched TMNT 2012 who actaully shipped Apritello.
Now, I’m not going to sit up here and say that Donnie’s crush (and in my opinion, later love) for April was the healthiest thing in the world. I’m also not going to say that Donnie and April’s characters where the best here. Because it wasn’t, it was a result of bad writting from the writers part. But...Apritello in TMNT 2012 in canon wasn’t that bad sometimes per say. I personally love Apritello for what it could’ve been more than anything, but canon Apritello? It wasn’t THAT bad. Again, it was just how it was written. If it was given more of proper writting, I really think Apritello could of been like, one of the most amazing and complex ships in media history??? But Alas...
However, unlike 2012 Apritello (unfortunately), I do think Rise “Apritello” is being handled A LOT better, healthier and more natural this time around. Even if it’s not the creators/writers intentions this time around to make any kind of romance for the two, they still have great development together, but I belive that they are close. Now, in MY personal headcanons, I headcanon that Donnie didn’t initially romantically like April from the start. I even made a headcanon that when they first met, they disliked each other (but that’s a different story for maybe another day). So things basically just went the same as it is in canon.
However, ever since the snow day episode (which I kind of headcanon in a scene that wasn’t shown like this), Donnie gain a tiny crush on her (which grew little by little). Now by NO MEANS that it’s as big and crazy as 2012 Donnie’s crush, but a crush no less. Now, do or will they get together in my headcanon? Well, I don’t know yet. Because my feelings for this pair tend to go back and forth.
The point is, people ARE allowed to ship Apritello if they want to. People shouldn’t have to feel hesitant or bad to ship them just because others see them as siblings (which again, they are not even related) or because people don’t personally like it or see it as right. I also don’t feel like people have to stop shipping it just because of the common headcanon that April is a Lesbian.
And that’s another thing. Look, I have NOTHING against the popular headcanon of April being a lesbian (and I also understand why people would think that). That’s cool. You can have ANY KIND of headcanon for ANY character you want. However, in my personal headcanons, I see April as Bi (but maybe a little more interested in girls). It’s not only because I ship her with Donnie though, but it’s because it’s never been confirmed that she’s not interested in guys too though.
Just because she’s bit of a tomboy and has no interested in Dale (a character that BARLEY made ANY appearances and the fandom seems to already hate him for SOME REASON), that doesn’t automatically mean that she’s ONLY into girls. I mean, you can headcanon ANYONE the way that you want, but her being Bi is MY opinion and MY headcanon.
My point: Ship what you want and don’t give dam what ANYONE says, even if it is Apritello.
7). They make a pretty good duo. Shown in episodes like “The Purple Jacket” and “Donnie v.s. Witch Town”, the two make a prefect duo! They also seem to have a better understanding of each other and care about one another a lot. They love each other and kick butt together! ^^ 8). This is my personal taste, but they are like the sun and moon :) This also plays into my “opposites attract” theory when it comes to them. Also, read more up about the concept of “yin and yang”. It will make A LOT of sense when it comes to these two!  9). It can work out platonically AND romantically. Like I’ve mentioned above, it means they are dating/are in a relationship, that doesn’t mean that they can’t also be friends. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t work out just as good as friends. That’s just how much understanding that they have for each other and how good they work out together :)
---
Wow, I wrote a lot! lol If I took any of this all out of context, I’m sorry for that? lol But I just wanted to make the point that shipping Apritello in this incarnation isn’t bad like some people make it out be. It’s just as fun as shipping any of the other popular pairs in in this incarnation. I like Apritello, both 2012 and Rise. If you do too, then you should be allowed to without feeling bad about it. Just remember that!
Let’s enjoy these two dorks together, ok? :)

The last 10 years of pixel art
Retronator the blog is exactly 10 years old right now (+ an hour or so more since I can’t seem to stop editing this post)!
I want to take this opportunity to look back at the teenage years of the 21st century and reflect on how the pixel art scene has grown over the years. I only promise a personal perspective, pieced together from my faulty memory and a bit more reliable archive of 1,700 posts on this blog.
2010
Social media sites emerged already in the late 2000s (Facebook launched in 2004, Twitter in 2006, Tumblr in 2007), but it took quite some time before they caught on, especially outside the US. I joined Tumblr in July 2010 and there were relatively few pixel artists active on the site. @jinndevil and @unomoralez go the farthest of those that I followed. The first post I reblogged was a Back to the Future piece from @megapont (via some blogpost share, since Megapont duo didn't join till 2013).
Tumblr media
What was huge on the network however was sharing retro-gaming artworks by blogs like @it8bit and @gameandgraphics. This included many pixel art pieces and it helped grow a community of fans that adored both old games and pixels.
2011
I'd put 2011 down as the start of the hi-bit era of pixel art games, championed by the release of the iconic adventure game Sword & Sworcery. Pixel purism of the initial pixel art movement was left behind by mixing pixels with high-res special effects like soft shadows and vignetting. Also, spaghetti legs started their fad period.
Tumblr media
Artists such as @probertson, @drewpixel, and @merrigo started their days on Tumblr, gathering huge audiences over the years. Meanwhile, Retronator grew to a whooping 100 followers by the end of the year.
2012
Tumblr's fan spirits were going stronger and stronger, to which I threw my own logs on the fire by releasing Tribute, my biggest and most popular piece of fan art I created so far.
Tumblr media
The highly anticipated FEZ got released (to critical acclaim and other more controversial consequences), further bringing pixel art in front of the mainstream gaming audience.
Tumblr media
From newly-followed artists, @johanvinet was damn inspiring with his smooth animations. Anything GIF did immensely good on the Tumblr dashboard.
2013
This was THE year for Tumblr. So many new artists joined, it was hard to keep track. Anyone from established names like Mojang's art director @jnkboy and @konjakonjak of Noitu Love 2 fame (later Iconoclasts) to pixel art beginners such as @waneella, now one of the most well-known illustrators in the scene.
Tumblr media
The push for modern art direction with pixel art games wasn't stopping either. Not that amazing, more traditionally styled titles (with fresh color palettes) weren't present, as Chasm's debut on Kickstarter showed, but it was Hyper Light Drifter that really stole everyone's heart (machine) on the same crowdfunding platform. Gradients and smooth dynamic shading became unapologetically part of the pixel art (gaming) vocabulary from then on.
Tumblr media
When Papers, Please got released at the end of the year to universal appraisal, a new example was set for showing that pixel visuals don't necessarily need to be the most polished, technically-impressive pieces of artistic expression, they can also be simple—the majority of detail-filling can be offloaded to the player's imagination.
2014
Pixel purist ideology was a highly debated topic. Dan Fessler, the background artist on Chasm, did a strong push against the tighter set of constraints which said you should only use 'clean' tools such as the pencil and color fill to complete your artworks. Dan instead only cared about clean results, pioneering in the process the technique of HD Index Painting that used the depths of Photoshop layer magic to get otherwise identical results. And there were plenty of others right around the corner that wouldn't even care about keeping the results married to traditional pixel art ideals.
Tumblr media
Still, the majority of pixel art at this point was very orthodox. I started the Artist Feature series that showcased my favorite artists and none of them did anything controversial (nor they needed to). The biggest break from the old days was mainly highly increased color counts that allowed for subtle transitions without dithering, and free color picking without creating predefined color palettes. Octavi Navarro started his highly iconic @pixelshuh scenes, and the completely unknown @8pxl started her journey towards experimentation with pink sky gradients.
Tumblr media
Even more importantly, Pixel Dailies were born on Twitter, following Ben Porter's 365 days of doing pixel art daily.
2015
I called 2015 The Year of Pixel Dailies in the end-of-the-year article in my newly started Retronator Magazine. The Twitter community really exploded this year, bringing in many new artists to the medium, with Pixel Dailies serving as a platform to raise visibility to everyone, old and new. I found out about @weilarddrake and @orange-magik this way, Slynyrd, @iceztiqarts, @igorsandman … Other freshly-discovered people on tumblr were @kirokazepixel (one of the most prolific artists on the scene), @faxdoc (his learning journey was inspiring enough for its own article), and Talecrafter with @deathtrashgame (starting a whole new style of aliased, low-res painting without caring about individual pixels).
Tumblr media
The discussion whether pixel art could survive past its nostalgic roots was still in the air, stirred by opinions such as A Pixel Artist Renounces Pixel Art. History is proving them wrong however, with pixel art stronger than ever in 2020. It's not a visual language people born after the 80s couldn't understand.
New-school voxel art pieces started trending with the advent of Magicavoxel, pioneering the development of pixel art's sibling in 3D. The first pixel art convention Pixel Art Park was held in Tokyo. And (important for me personally), I came up with Pixel Art Academy, an adventure game that would take my ambitions in pixel art education into the future.
Tumblr media
2016
After 9 years in development, Owlboy released! Also Hyper Light Drifter! And Stardew Valley! And Kingdom! Pixel art games were not dying, they were on the rise.
Tumblr media
Edge (the popular British video game magazine) published a special 200+ page issue called Art of the Pixel. It featured contemporary artists outside the gaming context, championing the aesthetic's transition from its video game roots into its own art form.
Pedro Medeiros of @studiominiboss started his famous series of GIF tutorials, subsequently encouraging many others to share their knowledge in the popular square format. Tumblr still saw new artists joining the platform, such as @motocross-arts and @apolism (two thirds of the Japanese trio The Ultimate Pixel Crew), while others like @6vcr started their first pixel explorations that year. @brunopixels, an old-schooler on the platform like me, sparked the Octobit movement, a pixel art alternative to Inktober.
Tumblr media
2017
Further new names on Tumblr included @guttykreum (outdoorsy perspective pieces) and @scrixels (one of the most consistent daily posters with over 1,000 artworks by now).
The annual Shibuya Pixel Art Contest joined Pixel Art Park at promoting the art form in Tokyo, Japan (and worldwide really). Lospec became the new go-to resource site for pixel art, picking up the mantle from PixelJoint and Pixelation that—while still active—stagnated technologically and feature-wise.
More than anything, pixel art games were everywhere. Maybe it only seemed to me this way since I was able to go to the Game Developer's Conference as press and had the chance to interview many many people in the scene, leading to over half a year of daily content on this blog. Indie games felt stronger than ever with so many of us full-on realizing our dreams of creating our own games professionally. The one that left the biggest splash on the scenes was no doubt The Last Night, announced front and center in-between AAA titles during Microsoft's E3 conference. The brothers Soret pushed the art direction even beyond the hi-bit era moniker, fusing 3D, shaders, and modern cinematography with pixels in an iconic combination that, like Sword & Sworcery's spaghetti legs, was so atmospheric that it couldn't be resisted by future imitators.
Tumblr media
2018
Another game that pushed technological boundaries was Pathway, finally stepping into full light in 2018 and releasing one year later. I still think it has the most advanced pixel art graphics engine to date, using voxels and other tricks under the hood to deliver a completely dynamically lit environment while retaining the pixel-perfect 3/4 view aesthetic. Pixel art games were firmly part of mainstream gaming by now, with Celeste winning many awards alongisde pixelish Return of the Obra Dinn, further cementing the presence of pixels as an ever-evolving medium capable of expressing very different art styles.
Tumblr media
I decided to focus solely on developing Pixel Art Academy in 2018, putting this blog on relative hiatus with very sporadic updates towards the end of the year. But I never let it die. I thoroughly enjoy writing about the scene and my interest in the art form only grows with time.
2019–2020
Ironically, the closer the years are to the present, the less I remember what things stood out most. Maybe it's because my brain hasn't had the chance to automatically prune my memories yet from the overload of information that is the interwebs these days. Pixel art seems so out there, so much of my everyday life, encompassing me on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, DeviantArt … Even on TikTok you see kids zooming out of their freshly pixelized Minecraft photographs they call pixel art. The medium is alive, and more than ever.
As for the Retronator blog, from its zero followers exactly 10 years ago, it grew to 100 after a year and a half, 1000 the year after, 10k when it was 5 years old, and 30k just last month. Tumblr is still the platform where most of you follow my pixel art reports and I don't intend to stop anytime soon.
Here's to the next decade! Thank you all for reading. <3

Based on that one anons statement about the rottmnt fandom, I just wanted to say how cool it is about having a pretty well-experienced tmnt fan in the fandom... if that makes sense LOL Like, you have a lot more things to say and a better understanding on how people are in fandoms. It's hard to put into words, sorry. But it just makes the whole rottmnt fandom feel more chill whenever you give your thoughts and opinions. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Much Love! 💕
Awww, THANK YOU. That really helps my confidence levels here, since I get anxious often about all my rambling.
And I do everything I can to not stir up too much ugliness that others can bring, because I remember being a fan in my teens and twenties and feeling so sure of everything. I see how easy that feeling is now with constant Social Media and immediate connection that I didn't have at that age. I got to grow up floating through the slowly growing fandom with each version. And the specifics would change but the interactions, the headcanon wars, those never changed. Every single petty argument has been done and I've seen it.
Sometimes I'll try to get between a fight but my words mess up and I have to just back away and watch fans hurt each other over.
For example, there were always heated disagreement over the Raph and Mikey dynamic in different versions but it exploded with 2012. See, after 2012 ended and our love affair waned, we really got into the different kinds of ways siblings acted... and to be honest I as an only child hated parts of the dynamic to the point where I wrote an entire AU full of love and apologies- but I also kept looking at the equally valid concerns of fans who saw nothing wrong and who kept saying it was normal. I had to take all sides into account because I didn't have experience. Which is what I seek in general. And then people began blatantly attacking fans who wanted to discuss the "abuse" aspect. It disturbed me. The fans headcanoning the unhealthy family dynamic struck back in defense and everything got really really bad. It went from "let's talk about the writing of these characters and how we the fans interpret it" to "if you think the characters are like this, you are wrong and deserve physical violence brought upon you" and it hurt to scroll through the tags for a while.
And then it seemed to fade as other arguments popped up, echoing the decades past, and when Rise happened, there was a little bit of disagreement over how it portrayed a family. Nothing vicious. And there was agreement across the board that Michelangelo was obviously portrayed and treated with more love and care, finally showing his ADHD artistic and psychic sensitive side since Mirage and Archie. So that right there brings fans together. Seeing Donnie with autistic traits that aren't stereotypical is also joining the fans, and part of me, as an ADHD Autistic, is both joyously elated and nervously worried because I desperately need to see both Donnie and Mikey with accurate representation regardless of whether or not canon confirms anything.
Like, I spent a decade headcanoning Mikey as autistic, just with very different traits, and I wound up writing a post on Don and Mike representing the varied circular twisting spectrum. And then other autistic fans brought up traits in Leo and Raph, all versions. And nowadays when I read fanfics written by autistics featuring autistic Leo or Raph, that nervous joy rears its head because I just want All Four to represent. And now that I with fellow advocate scholars are looking into ADHD as being on the Mobius spectrum of autism, there's a world of What Else Do The Ninja Turtles represent? coming into the fandom that before were less known due to smaller circles.
So, I love that you appreciate my insights, as random and ranty as they are. I do my best to ignore the fans who don't like my rambles (I got told "for once in your life just shut the fuck up" when they hadn't mentioned my being a problem before, and somehow it felt like my nerves were shivering taught strings caught on wire and it's still a vile sensation). I don't search for praise but I'll take it all when I get it.
I feel like the Rise fandom has some of the most creative, beautiful ideas for all sorts of AU What If stories, because there's the entire history of the franchise to bring in and pay tribute to. That's part of why I'm still here. The main part is, you know, sticking with my biggest autistic special interest that I've clung to since I was nine.

A little Supernatural question, fill-out, thing! Pop the questions into a text post and answer for yourself if you want!
1. When did you start watching Supernatural?
October 2012, when season 8 was airing, and right around the time everything in my life was taking a serious nose-dive that was about to get much worse. honestly if i hadn’t found it then, i don’t know if i’d still be here at all.
i didn’t even have an account yet so i was browsing someone’s blog that had stuff from all kinds of fandoms on it. around that time i had been lurking in the batman fandom for a bit but it wasn’t really doing it for me so i was looking for something new to obess over. i kept seeing gifsets and stuff from spn, so i thought i’d give it a go. the first ep i watched was Lazarus Rising, and within not even 10 minutes i knew that this was it
2. Who is your favorite in TFW?
I just love dean so much - he means everything to me. he’s taught me so much, he makes me happy, he inspires me. he makes me be brave when i don’t wanna be
3. Who is your least favorite in TFW?
that’s a weird question??? i might not blog about them as much but i don’t dislike sam or cas. honestly it makes me sad when people (as in, fans) try to pitch tfw against each other
4. Tag your top 5 Supernatural blogs!
i don’t follow a whole lot of people because i’m cautious of wank and stan wars and such but i love having @postmodernmulticoloredcloak @wigglebox @jensensitive @dotthings @occamshipper @mittensmorgul @deathswaywardson and @softcuddlydean on my dash :) (...that’s eight already. and i probably forgot someone. i’m not good with numbers okay!! o(>.<)o)
5. Who is your favorite character (not including TFW)?
it’s so hard to pick one but - Donna!!! i love her so much, she’s so upbeat and fun too watch but she has depth too and layers and i’ve really enjoyed how they’ve developed her as a character. i kind of look up to her :)
6. Who is your favorite woman in Supernatural?
basically the same as above but - honestly all of the women are awesome
7. John or Mary?
i don’t like this vs trend but Mary. maybe she’s difficult to love, but i personally really appreciate the decisions they made regarding her character and her character development, that she wasn’t this perfect mother dean remembered. i’ve never, ever, been able to relate to a mother child dynamic on tv before mary and dean. oftentimes mothers are portrayed as either perfect or evil, and to see this struggle, this gray area - it meant a lot to me, it was really powerful. i in general appreciate the message that it’s possible to both love and hate your parents at the same time, and that it’s something that’s just allowed to be that way
8. What were your first opinions of Sam, Dean, Cas, and Jack?
i honestly don’t really remember. it’s also difficult because i already had half a foot in fandom and was also watching season 8 while it aired while also playing catch up on season 1-7 at the same time. with jack, i remember that i really appreciated alexander calvert’s acting choices, because he did this blend of innocent and ominous/threatening so well
9. What’s your favorite season?
if you’d asked me this during season 13, i’d have said season 13, but now it’s definitely season 14 (for now, since 15 just started airing). the michael storyline was like my favorite ever (and inspired my to write what i think is, so far, my best deancas longfic), but also overall the season was so neat and fascinating thematically
10. What’s your least favorite season?
i don’t really have one, though i’d say while rewatching the entire show over the summer i found season 6 the hardest to get through. not even because of everything that goes down with cas but like - the one and only good thing that happens to team free will there was getting sam’s soul back, and even that had painful repercussions. there is some really interesting stuff in there, but overall it was hard to watch
11. Opinions on Destiel?
it’s canon. like - if someone tries to tell me it’s not i have to assume they’re being willfully ignorant on the subject (of course it’s perfectly fine not to ship it and stuff but arguing its very existence is kind of ridiculous at this point)
12. Do you believe Supernatural queerbaits?
no. honestly i kind of feel like that word gets thrown around so quickly and so frequently people have forgotten what queerbaiting actually is and what it is not, and that’s done some serious damage
13. Seasons 1-7 or 8-14?
again with the vs thing but - 8-14. dean and sam finally have a bigger family and an actual home, that alone always makes me gravitate more to the later seasons
14. Favorite villain (plot wise)?
Michael (big surprise XD). i enjoyed him so much, especially since he foreshadows what dean’s going through in regards to chuck/god rn
15. Do you think they should end the Lucifer plot line?
don’t know when this questionaire was made - i think it’s over, and they did well with it
16. Who do you think has gone through more trauma (Sam, Dean, or Cas)?
honestly, i think with trauma, we shouldn’t compare it like that. they’ve all been traumatized repeatedly - sometimes in similiar ways, but even then everyone reacts differently. it’s not fair to do comparisons, and it doesn’t help either
17. What’s your favorite Supernatural episode?
i used to say i’m married to The Executioner’s Song, then Tombstone aired and i had the time of my life, and then Nihilism aired - and that ep was like everything i’ve ever wanted. i bet @postmodernmulticoloredcloak can still remember me spamming them via text while watching - which took me like two hours because i kept screaming about everything basically XD
18. Do you like case episodes?
i love them
19. Who do you relate most to in TFW?
dean. for all the reasons i already stated in 2., but also i’m the oldest daughter and had to protect my younger siblings as a kid (domestic violence situation, among other things). my younger “sister” and i weren’t blood related but i would have died for her, she meant everything to me. plus, dean’s really emotional but has a lot of protective walls that he needs to survive, and i can relate to that as well
20. Why do you like Supernatural?
too many reasons to list them all. there’s dean, there’s the whole found family trope. the complexity of the characters and their dynamics, the deeply psychological themes than run through the entire narrative. i think you can really tell that the people - actors, writers, directors, crew - really love making the show, and put a lot of effort into it. it’s not a “perfect” show (which doesn’t exist anyway) but it’s made with love. plus we got this amazing cast that cares so much and gives so much, and it really makes you feel less alone, makes you feel seen and heard even if you never meet any of them face to face. it’s genuine, and it’s rare, and i cherish it, just like the show
21. If you could bring back one character and kill off another who would they be?
hm, i genuinely can’t think of anyone i’d kill off rn. who i’d bring back - benny was awesome and i miss him. also eileen, but apparently we will see her again in some way, so there’s that :)
@wigglebox i did this because you said you’re tagging everyone who wants to do this, so now i’m stealing your move and saying the same! ;D

I actually really got into the past two incarnations of TMNT series. I did watch some of them and thought both shows were good. But I wasn't really attached to either of them. Rise however, is perfect. It's tone (so far) reminds me of a less darker version of Scooby Mystery Inc. It's a riot with cool scenes. Though where it shines best is the characters. The turtles are so likable and dynamic w/well rounded flaws to develop from. Mickey for instance has usually been portrayed as the happy-
2 idiot by his brothers (more or less). Here he's more sassy, contributes w/his artistic side and gets more respect. It's pretty refreshing to see them squabble like normal close siblings. But also keep their relationships very warm and unconditional (interesting conflict can be external, not just internal). Basically yeah, in Rise their personalities and designs are very distinct and enjoyable.
My favorite TMNT series continues to be 2012 (I’M JUST A LITTLE BIASED TOWARDS THE CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND THAT ONE WHO ALSO MADE THIS LITTLE SHOW ABOUT ROBOT MONKEYS I MENTIONED A FEW TIMES) but dang, I adore Rise. I feel like a good reboot is meant to change a show’s status quo significantly and explore it from new angles... otherwise why bother?
What I also really like is how even though each of the brothers is very different from their previous renditions, they still have the same... energy??? For lack of a better word?
For example, Raph is now the leader and doesn’t have the same temper tantrums, but he still wears his heart on his sleeve. Leo is still the most competent, but he’s less the perfectly disciplined one and more than kid who never studied but always got the best grades anyway that everyone hated in high school. And despite all of this, they still manage to naturally butt heads and drive the others crazy arguing.
There are some changes I’m not personally a fan of - not really feeling this version of Splinter - but I can let those things slide because the show just took so many risks to give things a new angle and I love it.
Not to mention the animation is absolutely amazing.

That new TMNT is so... different! The turtles are individually different species. The tone of the show is like nothing that's been done for them before. Even the underlying plot seems to be an entirely original take. Honestly, besides the main protagonist names (and being based in NYC) they have used nearly none of the original lore from the previous versions of the comic turned pop culture main stay. Here are some thoughts:
I'm not nearly as mad at the animation style as I thought I'd be. It's got the feel of a fan made cartoon short - but not short. It's very fluid, very detailed, colourful (which is a big change from the shadowy theme of 2012 TMNT), and is clearly influenced by anime. 2012 TMNT had is anime moments but the 3d animation could feel very stiff a lot of the time. The action scenes in Rise are gonna be intense, I can tell already.
Humor is a major factor in the stories. There were blatant jokes, implied jokes, visual humor, comedic exchanges and probably more loaded into just the first episode. Considering how "not funny" the original comic is and how dark those stories have been translated over the decades, it's at first shocking and then kind of refreshing. This may explain why all of the original villains were ditched. Perhaps to preserve their well treaded intensity while introducing newer characters with a lighter disposition? It also helps that the jokes are funny.
The story is 95% brand new. Like I said earlier, there is no recall to the original material besides the turtles' names, the mutation, NYC, and April and Splinter ( side note: I like the new April but I do not like the new Splinter). This is a stark contrast from the last series which often featured homages and throwbacks to everything from the comics to the live action movies, sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious. The changes are so major in Rise that I can't see how call backs could be possible, but I could always be wrong about this. Honestly, it seems that the creators wanted to build a completely new world for the characters and avoid harkening to the past in any shape or form. From the way that first episode went I could totally get on board with that.
Then there are the turtles themselves. To go along with the plot shift there has also been a shift in the four brother's character traits and their team dynamic. Most notable are the changes in Leonardo and Raphael. Not only have they made Raph the leader but they have completely erased Leo's ambition and cooled Raph's trademark temper. They both have more relaxed attitudes. It's almost as if they all became more like classic Michelangelo. Raph is still the more intense fighter of the group, however, and it's likely for this reason that he's been put in charge. Interestingly, this doesn't seem to bother anyone in the group, least of all Leo. They seem to truly enjoy one another which is different from their constant sibling bickering that's usually present. There were times in 2012 TMNT that a viewer would think they only tolerated each other for battle purposes. In Rise, they crack on each other, joke with each other, and even openly praise one another. That's nice to finally witness after all these years.
You can tell from the outset that these are probably the youngest version of the team that's ever been featured. They talk about how they don't really train to fight, use their weapons or be ninjas in general, and early in the episode they completely skip an opportunity to be heroic. This may mean that they get a tad more serious later in the show. Even with their fairly jovial demeanors, you can see the potential for personal growth in them and I'd be surprised if the show didn't take advantage of those chances to develop their character. For now, they don't even have their classic weapons, but the new ones are cool and magical as well.
I liked the premier episode and will be watching. I'm glad I checked it out because I was truly in mourning over 2012 TMNT going off the air. It was perfect in it's own ways and probably my favorite version to date. But Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles looks to be a worthy successor in that it won't be anything like the others before it.
@kidkendoll I know I said a lot but I had a lot of thoughts lol

Mitsubishi Outlander 2019 review
Mitsubishi must have a thing for old cars. The Lancer, Pajero and ASX are all now much older than most other car companies would tolerate without them being given at least a vigorous going-over, if not replacing them completely.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is, comparatively speaking, a spring chicken, at just six years since its launch. That said, the pace of improvements has picked up over the past 24 months as new or updated competitors pile into the market.
This car has a couple of important things going for it; it’s cheap, and it also has a bang up-to-date plug-in hybrid model, the PHEV.
And as the MY19 Outlander has now arrived, virtually straight after the MY18.5, we thought it time for a good old fashioned shakedown.
Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with?
The Outlander has always been reasonable value and is probably the best-value seven-seat SUV out there, with the departure of the Holden Captiva. Though I would argue it already held that title, because the Captiva wasn't much of a car.
Our Outlander model comparison covers the entire range. We'll cover how much each model will cost you using the price list (RRP) pricing. Prices have moved a little bit, and in the case of the PHEV, they've moved a lot - happily, in a southerly direction.
There are 13 distinct models in the MY19 Outlander range, which opens with the manual front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre petrol ES. The ES manual distinguishes itself by being the only of the trim levels to sneak in under the $30k mark, weighing in at $29,290. It's also the only one of the cars with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine under the bonnet.
It's a bit complicated here in the ES arena - once you're past the bargain-basement manual transmission model, you've a choice of 4x2 and AWD versions, and the answer to the how many seats question is many, with five- and seven-seat versions available.
The ES specifications include 18-inch rims, a six-speaker sound system, reversing camera, central locking with automatic door lock, climate control air-conditioner, cruise control, leather gearshift and steering wheel, power mirrors, cloth trim and a full-size spare tyre. When you go for the PHEV, you also pick up reverse parking sensors to soften the extra cost.
To the ES spec you can add the ADAS package, auto headlights and wipers, partial leather interior with micro-suede inserts, keyless entry and start with smart key, electric front seats, heated and folding power mirrors and an electrochromatic rear vision mirror.
You can expect 18-inch alloy wheels, and on top of the LS's spec is a sunroof, full-leather interior, front and side cameras, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, daytime running lights, rear privacy glass, power tailgate (a very useful convenience feature), rear spoiler and rear cross-traffic alert. You do, however, lose the spare tyre.
The same multimedia system does duties across the whole range. The ho-hum infotainment software is supported by Apple CarPlay for iPhone and Android Auto. There is also DAB radio, six speakers and bluetooth. There is no radio CD player (but there is AM/FM and digital), and no inbuilt GPS navigation system. The 7.0-inch touchscreen, familiar from the ASX, is of the "it's alright, I guess" approach to touchscreen hardware. Looks good, though.
The accessories list has all the usual things: over-priced floor mats (a choice of carpet and rubber), nudge bar (but no bull bar), nudge bar with integrated light bar, cargo barrier, tow bar, roof rack and boot liner.
Absent from the list are a snorkel, DVD player, subwoofer, winch, tonneau cover, side steps, anything resembling a luxury pack, rear seat entertainment system, heated steering wheel, seat belt extender, lift kit or park assist. No doubt a good chunk of that list is available from aftermarket suppliers.
Mitsubishi hasn't gone mad with the colours -  black, red, silver, pearl white, ironbark (brown) and titanium (grey). Only Solid White is a freebie, the rest are $590 extra. If you want blue or orange, you're out of luck.
Where is the Mitsubishi Outlander built? It's built in Japan.
Is there anything interesting about its design?
Mitsubishi won few hearts with the Outlander’s exterior design in 2012, which looked rushed and unfinished. The years since have been kinder to the Outlander, with various styling improvements and a whole new front end arriving a few years ago. The chrome might be a bit much for me, but it's way better looking than it was and it now fits nicely with the rest of the Mitsubishi SUV range. This upgrade also added a new chin and a tweak to the Dynamic Shield (how Captain America is that name?) grille arrangement.
There is no body kit or side skirts, just a clean design save for some mouldings on the doors. The roof rails smarten things up a bit. You can spot the PHEV by the different design on the 18-inch alloys and requisite blue-accented badging.
Interior photos show a conventional interior. The materials are fairly basic - apart from the rather nice fake leather/micro suede seats in the LS - and the cabin is a mess of switchgear from different eras. Again, just like its ASX sibling, there is nothing avant-garde or exciting about the Outlander, which is perfectly fine. But you might want to know.
How practical is the space inside?
Whether a five or seven seater, the Outlander offers reasonable storage and load capacity. Front and second-row passengers score two cup holders for a total of four, which matches the number of bottle holders. Only the LS and Exceed models get seatback pockets on both sides, which is a bit grim.
The cabin is a very decent size given the car's modest footprint. Its interior dimensions mean you can get seven people in, although comfort is relative. I've had four adults and two teenagers ensconced without major problems, although the trip will want to be short.
Third-row access is fraught and made more difficult by the overly complex middle-row folding mechanism, and legroom is tight to say the least. The middle row is not at all bad for leg and headroom, though.
Luggage capacity is dependent on the number of seats in use. With all three rows upright, the boot is a measly 128 litres. That number rises to 477 litres with the third row folded and is the same for a five-seat Outlander. Once both rear rows are stowed - and it's an annoyingly tricky process to fold the second row - you have a hefty 1608 litres.
All loaded up, gross vehicle weight ranges from 1985kg for the 1410kg kerb weight ES manual through to 2370kg for the comparatively chunky PHEV (1860kg kerb weight).
What are the key stats for the engine and transmission?
Across the range there is a choice of four engine specs.
The ES manual starts off with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor developing 110kW and 190Nm of torque. It's the same engine as the smaller ASX and is just as uninspiring. The only Outlander with a clutch, the five-speed manual feeds power to the front wheels only.
The 2.4-litre petrol produces 124kW and 220Nm. Power reaches the road by either the front wheels or all four tyres, and no matter what, you'll need to like a continuously variable transmission. Or not care.
The 2.2-litre turbo diesel grinds out 110kW and a more respectable 360Nm. The diesel only comes with all-wheel drive and, according to Mitsubishi, a six-speed “sport” automatic.
Finally, the PHEV uses both a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 87kW and 186Nm and two 30kW electric motors that bring the total combined power outputs to 120kW and 332Nm. A 12kWh/40Ah battery hides under the boot floor and takes around six hours to charge. Power goes out via all four wheels and a single speed automatic.
As to whether the 4B11 petrol engine uses a timing belt or chain, it's the latter.
None of the Outlanders have startling 0-100 acceleration figures - despite being a relative lightweight in the class, the horsepower isn't there for strong performance. Amusingly, however, I have it on good authority that Wakefield Park race track occasionally sees a brave Outlander owner cutting laps.
For any reported automatic transmission problems, or general problems, complaints or feedback, keep an eye on our owner's page.
How much fuel does it consume?
You might expect the smallest engine size to use the least fuel, and you'd be right - but only just. The sole 2.0-litre engine-equipped Outlander will use 7.0L/100km according to the official fuel ratings figures.
The 2.4-litre petrol consumption figure is 7.2L/100km in AWD and front-wheel drive guises. Either way, we didn't see less than 11.2L/100km from a 50/50 split of highway and suburban running in a two-wheel drive LS.
The 2.2 diesel fuel consumption figure is listed at 6.2L/100km. Our time with an Exceed diesel saw us almost double that figure in a mix of highway and suburban running.
If fuel mileage is your overall goal, the PHEV is for you - the official figure of 1.7L/100km is scarcely believable, but that's partly to do with the way the figure is calculated. You can expect, in normal driving at least, a 4.0-5.0L/100km result, which isn't bad at all. Charging from a the plug consumes 9.8kWh and Mitsubishi says you'll cover 54km on a charge.
Fuel tank capacity is 63 litres for front-wheel-drive cars, 60 litres for most AWDs and 45 litres for the PHEV.
There is no LPG version or one with a supercharger.
Towing capacity varies. The PHEV can manage 750kg unbraked and 1500kg braked. The 2.0-litre petrol can "only" tow 740kg unbraked and shares the same 1600kg braked ratings as the other petrols. The diesel can haul 2000kg.
What's it like to drive?
Like the ASX, driving the Outlander is not an outright pleasure. It's not bad - in fact, it's much better than its smaller sibling - but there's little true joy.
The front-wheel-drive LS is shod in what can only be described as deeply ordinary tyres, and even with such little power available, an immodest throttle application results in (admittedly mild) torque steer. For both of those reasons, I'd strongly recommend an all-wheel-drive Outlander. The Eco mode further dulls the driving experience without a useful effect on the fuel economy.
The front suspension is by McPherson struts, while the rear suspension is a multi-link arrangement. Sadly, this doesn't translate to a particularly accomplished ride and handling setup. Add to that the Outlander's vague electric steering and you've really just got a transport device. Which is perfectly fine if that floats your boat.
Road noise is kept to a minimum - for its faults, the Outlander is quiet in the cruise, no matter which version you choose.
This isn't an off-road review, but we can tell you a few facts about its capability.  Unladen ground clearance (mm) is just 190, which isn't super high. The wading depth isn't listed in the official spec sheet and there is no diff lock, so don't get too excited about its river-fording ability. You wouldn't call the rubber all-terrain tyres, either - this car is meant for the city, with some mild weekend excursions thrown in.
What safety equipment is fitted? What safety rating?
The Outlander range scored a five-star ANCAP safety rating when it was last tested in 2014.
Standard across the range are seven airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls and a reversing camera. The ADAS package - optional on all ES models, standard on the rest - includes reverse parking sensors, forward AEB, lane departure warning, active cruise and auto high-beam.
The Exceed also includes lane change warning, lane change assist, around-view camera, reverse cross-traffic alert and blind spot warning.
It seems you can only put a baby seat in the second row. On offer are two ISOFIX and three top-tether child seat anchor points.
What does it cost to own? What warranty is offered?
Mitsubishi offers a five-year/100,000km warranty with four years roadside assist in the form of a motoring organisation membership. Also included is a capped-price servicing regime to limit each service cost.
The warranty also includes a five-year guarantee against rust and similar body faults and covers any reliability issues or defects.
A sweep of the internet forums suggest there are no obvious automatic gearbox problems, diesel problems or any other transmission issues, which figures, given the long history of each of the components.
The owner’s manual features useful information such as oil type, turning circle (10.6m) and top speed.
Resale value is pretty standard, retaining around 50 per cent after three years, although it’s a little lower vs some of its more accomplished - and more expensive - rivals.
Verdict
The Outlander does trade a bit on being a lifestyle SUV. With a bling exterior and a big interior, it looks like it could pull it off. The only problem is, it's old and it's lagging behind its main competitors on various technologies. The lack of AEB in the lowest ES models is also a bit stingy, but Mitsubishi isn't alone here and it isn't as expensive as its rivals.
It's a very good suburban knockabout if you need the space. The LS with its standard ADAS package and better interior trim is the pick of the range, and I'd go for an all-wheel-drive version to improve the experience.
At its heart, the Outlander is cheap reliable transport. Being able to make choices around engine and seats means there's something here for everyone - if you're willing to look past its age, ride and handling and dull drive.
