I spent too much time having to look up information on WWII dog tags and now I can INSTANTLY spot when someone (artists, pin makers, fic writers, people who make novelty dog tags) has used the wrong format for Steve’s WWII dog tags. :/
The U.S. Army changed their format for dog tags -- officially identification tags -- several times over the course of the war, including changing the order of the name, whether the home address was included, forms of service numbers...the screen-used dog tags from Camp Lehigh somewhat infamously have a nonexistent service number (probably because they didn’t want to accidentally use a real one), but Steve would have gotten a new service number when he was commissioned anyway (by 1943 officer service numbers didn’t begin with O-, but his would begin with 0).  Steve’s Camp Lehigh set might have still had his next-of-kin’s address on them (the screen-used ones do not), but he also does not have next-of-kin, so there’s that.  (Not his home address, his next-of-kin’s.)  His later ones would not have because they stopped putting the address on in July 1943.  Unless he got new ones issued in mid-1944, all of those would have his name as STEVEN G ROGERS, but if he had to get a new set issued after March 1944, they would have his name as ROGERS, STEVEN G.  They would have the date of his last tetanus vaccine (T42 or T41, whenever), plus the booster if applicable, his blood type, and his religion (P (Protestant), C (Catholic), H (Jewish, the H stands for Hebrew), NP (no preference), or blank).  They would not have his rank or his branch of service or the fact he’s a super soldier on there.
The current format for dog tags has changed since WWII, so if Steve had new tags issued in 2012, they would not be the same as his WWII tags.  (Presumably the ones he is wearing in the last scene of CATFA are a replica of his WWII tags, but if the Army issued him new tags after that, they would be different -- they would also actually not be the same as those used today, because the format has changed since then.  more options for religion now too.)

Chapter 4 of my post-SoD, semi-historical fiction Fantastic Beasts fic is up, With It’s Head Under One Wing.
Today, Newt puts a former DRCMC colleague in his place, Theseus tries to apologize for a clumsy reaction, and Newt and Theseus discover…autism. Next, we’ll see Newt dealing with a Quentiped, and then a sweet Tina chapter or two before we’re hurtled into the startling appointment of Germany’s new chancellor. (All while Grindelwald is, you know, still somewhere.)
Tumblr media
Excerpt:
Newt stood there, processing for a moment, before dropping a hand into the pocket he’d been picking at to play with one of the loose strings inside.
“You came here just to tell me sorry? In person?”
Theseus nodded and shifted slightly on his feet.
“It’s all right. You were very helpful with your information–”
Theseus cut him off. “Newt.”
“It is, though,” he said again. “I did it once, to a hippogriff, when I thought he was – After a storm and he'd been – Well, the details don't matter. But I forgot my manners, despite the hippogriffs’ nature, and we were both quite upset by that in the end."
Theseus looked at Newt for a long moment, and Newt watched Theseus (eyes fixed on the minute crinkles between his brother’s eyes), and then he turned away to retrieve a pair of mugs.
“I forgot that you startle,” Theseus said from behind him. “I’ve accepted that you don’t like to be touched, even if it took me a long time—far too long, really—to stop forcing it on you.”
Newt could hear the unspoken confusion in his brother’s voice.
“At the same time, you’re different than you were when we were kids, you know? More sure. And you handle those beasts like nothing at all.”
Newt cracked his knuckles before unscrewing the lid from the can of Gunpowder tea and—without turning around—he flicked his wand over his shoulder, toward the teapot he kept on the built-in shelf above the sink.
“Newt?”
The teapot floated past Theseus’ head just as Newt turned back around, open can in his hands.
“I have more field data now,” he said simply.
Theseus stared, and then jerkily readjusted so one hand was in his pocket and the other on his hip, leaning slightly forward with furrowed brows as if being closer to Newt would help him better understand the meaning behind his words.
“Field – What?”

Trying to write Captain America fanfiction and not only do I have to research 1930-40s Brooklyn, but also at this point 2014 America too because that was almost 10 years ago and I don't remember what was happening ☠️

So I collected a lot of odd little facts about the 40s in my quest for fic research, and one the keeps coming up to the front of my mind is that during the war,  women would stain and draw lines down their legs to make it seem like they were wearing stockings [Cause rationing and all that shit].
But like, what happened to their old stockings? Were they not made to last long or? Were they donated to the cause or smth??
If wearing stockings was such a need to uphold, you’d think they’d take very good care of the ones they already owned.

a concerning amount of witchblr will be like "um actually new years was stolen by europeans from the ancient god scroobus mcdoobus" and then you actually try to research scroobus mcdoobus and it turns out he was invented in the 1940s by a conspiracy theorist who powdered every meal with ketamine and thinks that queer people are reincarnated fish

[longwinded rambling nothing to see here]
im actually really close to being an adult though and its kind of really exciting. i feel a little bit sick and awful, and my present moment isn’t going very well, but i feel like it’s going to be possible to feel satisfied? and idk that’s an exciting idea. like one day i’m gonna be forty and bearded, and i won’t think about oliver anymore, and i’ll be in a band, and i hope i’ll be less sick or i’ll know how to deal with it, and i’ll be publishing writing one way or another, and i’ll be a connected member of my family, chosen or otherwise, and i can watch over the garden wall every day if i want to, and i will bring my very own broom to everywhere i live, and i’ll have a good electric guitar and a full sized acoustic cello, and i’ll make jewelry all the time and if i’m healthy enough or i have a friend to help with walks, i can have a dog. and there are a lot of big and unrealistic things that i want in life, but one day i’ll be able to see clearly, and sleep as much as i need to, and people will recognize me and i’ll help as much as i can, and i will make art and love so many people, and maybe i can cook.
#i came out to my dad today as trans it went better than i could have ever imagined he’s skeptical but not angry#i told him i’m going to start hormones soon. he thinks i’m going to regret it cause i’m autistic but he accepts that he can’t stop me#(because i will be eighteen in a couple months and testosterone is SOMETHING I CAN DO. i need my dad’s insurance is why i finally came out#and i knew that he was getting ready to tell me he has a girlfriend so i kind of weaponized the moment shdhdf)#anyway i’m going to take folklore classes next semester and learn about cultural revitalization and public folklore#and i’m learning latin and programming and i’m doing a research project on the mexican american community of st paul in the 1940s!!#(which is around when my family settled in minnesota permanently after they had did the sugar beet cycle for a while)#i’m also doing research on ancient roman textiles and dress but that’s more stressful than anything even though i like both components of i#i finally made a breakup playlist and i think i needed to. and i’ve been writing a lot of music#can’t believe i spent four months dating somebody who doesn’t even obsess over cannibalism as a literary motif….#i ordered glasses online over a month ago and they haven’t even finished processing my prescription….#i really want a tarot deck and to get into astrology again and maybe even start making spell candles again#i’m interviewing for an entry-level library position tomorrow afternoon!! $12 an hour but also it’s a job that i’m competent for#anyway. all this to say hello i want to be present in the world and make something of myself#and it’s hard right now but there’s a lot of potential out there. anything could happen#anyway i hope everybody is doing okay and let me know if you need anything!!!!#me. my post. mine.#delete later

I've had an idea for something and I need to research but I'm just getting a bunch of weird terf and incel results. does anyone have resources for learning about historical men's fashion or historical androgenous fashion in a way that is not weirdly exclusionist or traditionalist/conservative. I'm specifically looking for anything American or British between 1880 and 1940 but general resources are also more than welcome. I'm 1000% sure that I'm just looking in the wrong places or got pegged into a weird algorithm loop by something because I know this is a subject a lot of people talk about in normal ways. I'm just tired of digging through the people who aren't

Some ideas of the atmosphere which prevailed in the 'atom cities' may be obtained from the following story told to a scientific congress by Dr Swartout, Director of the Radiochemistry Department at the Oak Ridge atomic-research laboratory:
One evening in the summer of 1947 a scientist – and by the term 'a scientist' I indicate only a typical case – was aroused from his dinner by a knock on the door. At his door stood a uniformed guard, who demanded that the man turn over his badge, his means of access to the town in which he lived and the installation at which he worked. Because the guard could give no reason, the man called his supervisor for an explanation, who turned out to be completely unaware of what was going on. After calls to successfully higher authorities the man was told to comply with the guard's orders and to report to the installation director's office early the next morning. Confronted by officials on the next day he was told that the F.B.I. investigation had discussed information which forced the Commission to consider him to be a questionable security risk; that he would be permitted to submit a statement in his defence regarding his character, loyalty, and associations; and that he would be reviewed by an A.E.C. board in Washington. In the meantime he would get a temporary pass to admit him to his home but not his place of work.
Imagine yourself in his position. If you were asked to defend your character, loyalty, and associations, what would you do? Against what! Whom had he known, what had he done or said which would bring this accusation against him!

Long considered extinct, pentl'ach has now been declared a living language and added to British Columbia's official list of First Nations languages.  The reclassification of pentl'ach (pronounced "PUNT-lutch") was the result of both linguistic and administrative work by the Qualicum First Nation on Vancouver Island's east coast, with support from the First Peoples' Cultural Council.  The Coast Salish language had been considered extinct because the last well known fluent speaker died in the 1940s.  But Mathew Andreatta, a Qualicum member and researcher with the pentl'ach revitalization project, said the language was never truly gone.  Andreatta called the reclassification "an affirmation of something that we've always known and that we've always felt." He said the move is important because it is healing for his people, but also because it opens more doors to continue revitalizing the language.
