Back in August, my mother, my sister and I did a three day roadtrip to Lake Placid in New York State, where the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were hosted. We hiked and visited Adirondack natural wonders the two first days, but because my health was starting to fail me on the second day, we kept the third one for visiting the Downton Abbey costume exhibition at the Lake Placid Center for the arts.
On our way to the exhibit, we passed by the Pines Inn, formerly known as the St. Moritz Hotel, a hotel built in 1907. I had wanted to stay at that hotel, but my mom refused, saying it was in poor shape and looked haunted on the hotel booking sites (she wasn't wrong, but I love that stuff, as you know). I still insisted for us to at least visit it, and we sure did NOT regret it. We stumbled upon one of the concierges (or new owners, correct me if you see this!), and he loved my outfit so much that he gave us a tour of the hotel, including in areas closed to guests. He told us that Albert Einstein and the Kennedys had been guests at the hotel, that there was n*de sunbathing on the roof in the 1930s and that a lot of the furniture was original. Sadly, after the 80s, the hotel slowly went into decrepitude and abandonment, and many things got stolen and damaged. The new owners are currently working hard to restore the hotel, and it's indeed a lot of work.

The third outfit Phryne wears in "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a gorgeous blue and purple coat with a matching purple cloche accented with blue floral embroidery.
The star of this outfit is the beautiful chinoise coat made of black silk with midnight blue damask floral designs and purple silk trim on the pockets and her lapped sleeve cuffs. Her coat is lined with purple silk, and has a standing mandarin collar with a single hidden closure at the waist. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, added cut out elements from original 1920's silk embroidery, attaching two large blue flowers to the left shoulder, as well as one on her hat. She finishes off her look with a blue silk organza floral brooch pinned to her shoulder.
Her accompanying cloche is a matching purple felt with a tight molded brim and decorative swoop near Phryne's left cheek, along with one of the silk embroidered flower motifs also seen on her coat.
Underneath her coat, Miss Fisher wears her dark blue camisole with small scalloped trim on the straight neckline, along with her navy blue wide leg silk faille pants. She accessorizes with a bag made of the same fabric as her coat, long teardrop earrings, and a large purple amethyst and diamond ring.

hi, would you write for Joe’s character, Ralph, from Timewasters?
Oh Nonny. You really do be plucking at my heartstrings here- this sweet little angel absolutely deserves more love-
Tumblr media
Are you digging right into one of my favourite eras ever to write about? Why hell yes. Wild Gatsby-esque style parties and live live live to excess. The fun, the frivolity. Where the Jazz is hot and the Gin is cold.
Oh my goodness, just imagine stumbling across this sweet suited boy at some insane party at a friends gothic country manor one night.
The place is overrun with coiffed dandies and loose floozies and you just want to dance in your pretty new dress to Jack Teagarden’s records on the Gramophone.
The champagne pops sparkling gold and fizzes, pours way too freely, people are dancing on the settees. Wearing masquerade masks and dripping in pearls and fringe. Pillows have been ripped. White feathers rain like it’s a storm. The Crystal chandelier hangs precariously swinging down, broken. Smashed glasses and broken antique crystal shards.
There’s no thought to the fresh faced consequences of tomorrow. Live for now. Don’t be a square.
Sad drawn brows and dark deep red lips sit on so many girls. It’s so fashionable now. Making them all look smoky divine Clara Bow. It’s mad. It’s glorious. You’ve never felt more alive.
There’s drugs too, playing in the snow, they call it. A little mirrored tray and a straw. You stay enlivened with your glass of gin and you twirl in your heels and your silver dress. Your hair is cat black and bobbed short, sleek. You think it’s just masculine enough to be beautiful.
Your mother’s heirloom pearls rattle on your wrists. You’re fresh out of the racy clubs and hoighty bars of London and you could use the distraction. You’re young you’ll dance and bop long into the night. Racing its completion to dawn til you drop.
Then there’s this awful cute boy in a snappy silky suit, in the corner toasting your health with a coupe glass of champagne. Eyes like sad brown puddles of chocolate. That’s intriguing.
“Are you here with someone?” He gets the courage to ask. Voice wobbling. He looks at you like one of those priceless exhibits at the British museum. Cleopatra. Nefertiti. Goddess.
You sip from your glass. The champagne is old and flat but you like the taste. You tap ash off the end of your black cigarette. Big dark diamonds glitter off your fingers. You look far too bad for him.
You are dark clouding opium.
Oh well.
You smile. Lips are plum waxy and dark with lipstick.
Your smile is brilliant. Wizard, he thinks.
“No. I came to dance, sugar. Care to indulge me?” You lean forward. Full of gumption and gin. Heavy smoke black lids look mournful yet you’re such a zinging zest of liveliness.
You talk like Louise Brooks off the silver screen. Punch your words out brightly, and you mean them. Forwards. Cut direct. Is there any other way to be?
Feather boa black you’ve got draped around you, tickling at your poky bare shoulders. Your perfume is rose noir. Dark musk and velvet lapping orchids. Black petals bloom towards him like something delicious and burnt. He’s beckoned to follow where they lead.
He’s smitten.
(Sweet anon, let me noodle this around in my clown brain for a bit and let it brew. I guarantee you something wicked and very jazzy this way will come-)

The first outfit of "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a luxurious red velvet coat over a silver camisole and matching pants, complete with a shaped straw hat accented by feathers.
Known as the Coral Dreamcoat, Phryne's coat is made of a silk shot coral velvet with silver silk lining. Closer examination reveals godets (triangular inserts of fabric to add movement and width) of the velvet lined with silver piping on each side, along with a front tie and upturned sleeves with beaded decorations hanging from the ends of each.
"[The coat] has a front tie, which gives it lots of movement. Gareth Blaha, who's really quite sensational with finishing pieces, made these beautiful dangles off all the sleeves and the front tie." - Marion Boyce, Costume Exhibition Catalogue
Serving as a backdrop for her coral coat is a scoop-neck camisole with a wide hem, and flared trousers are made of a matching grey faille. Topping it all off is an authentic 1920s straw beret, adorned with a few thin maroon swirling feathers on top of a coral and maroon ostrich feather pouf and decorated with two gold buttons.
Phryne also brings along her grey woven handbag with a golden clasp that has been seen previously in 2x01 and 2x02, and ties in with the silver in her coat lining and her camisole and pants. She finishes the look with grey suede heels, white leather gloves, and glass bugle bead earrings.
