ok i have no idea how controversial this opinion is and i haven't seen 15.18 myself yet but if this is the context in which cas says i love you the first time, i'm actually very suddenly disinclined to believe that the second(?) time was inherently and necessarily romantic. this is a strong characterization choice, such as in 8.17 when jensen nixed the "i love you" that was written in the script because it was OOC for dean to say that so freely.

this line establishes that cas is in fact the type to be emotionally vulnerable and share his love verbally, and the type of love he's sharing here is definitely not romantic (i mean unless you want to go the familial, intergenerational, incestuous polycule route, which i'm down for i don't care) so it proves that cas is also not someone to reserve his declarations of love to just romantic love. it additionally parallels the circumstances in which cas dies in 15.18 (as in, he's on the brink of certain death), so it provides a precedence and a context in which he would share these declarations, and if you parallel the two scenes then you would end up with the conclusion that cas's second "i love you" is not meant to be romantic.

this is actually surprising to me because i had been taking it for granted up to now that the speech he gives to dean in 15.18 was romantic, but this scene single-handedly turns that implication on its head and has reversed my opinion of it, dramatically and shockingly so. fascinating stuff.

just watched regarding dean and stuck in the middle (with you) back-to-back, and oh my goodness the way they’re such good episodes.

first of all i LOVE the direction of simwy. the different perspectives, the way the history is built, the actual shots. it’s such a fun viewing experience and i am a sucker for seeing the same scene from different povs.

regarding dean is fun because the actors did so much with it. like i don’t really care for the actual villains of the episode– i guess they’re a cliche for the winchesters to fight but an oldie is a goodie ig. but anyway, the acting. sam’s initial reaction to hungover dean has so much range from disappointment to humour to glad-he’s-having-fun. j*rd’s eyebrows were a whole character of their own, loved it. and then, any rowena lore is good lore for me. i looooooove it when you feel like she’s twisting stories to make herself more graceful/sympathetic, and then you meet the villains in her story and you’re like oh fuck these people are assholes. anytime she’s on screen, she’s holding the whole room and ruth just kills each nuanced part of her. and then there’s dean who is becoming a different not only every time he forgets more, but also when he’s told who he is. and then seeing him at the end with his eyebrows furrowed, i realised that he hadn’t had that tired look for the whole episode. love love love the performances
