Farewell, My Turnabout: A Darkest and Finest Hour
As much as I want to continue my rambling about Edgeworth with regards to the finale of Justice for All, I would be overlooking the rest of the cast in the process and doing them a great disservice!  In Farewell, My Turnabout, everyone got their chance to shine and truly act and react true to their characters as the events of this case unfolded.
Phoenix Wright is challenged in a way he never has been before, and truly feels the pressure of his situation up until the very end.  There are many times he feels like giving up or he’s simply at a loss for what to do, and it’s easy for the player to empathize with the tough choices he’s faced with.  Does he let a known criminal get acquitted and let the charges fall on someone he knows is innocent, or to let the guilty verdict happen and put Maya’s life at risk?  He grapples with this until the very end of the case, where one has a choice not once, but twice to choose the verdict for Matt Engarde.  In the end, Phoenix isn’t able to make the miracle happen on his own.  It’s his friends and even past rivals who come together to be sure true justice is served.
Miles Edgeworth is at his strongest in this case.  He is not under fire, but he’s also no longer aiming for more victories in court.  He has returned after a year of soul-searching for one reason only.  He wants to bring out the truth in the courtroom, and he’s even willing to help Phoenix reach it as well as doing what he can to help Maya in the meantime.  He joins Phoenix in fighting to the very end.  I think my heart broke a little when he said “the prosecution rests.”  It’s such a simple line, but it’s one we never saw from him before, if my memory is correct.  He is aware of his limitations, but he didn’t fold easily.
Maya Fey is in trouble, which might not be new on its own.  But the way she handled her situation was the best she could do, given her own limitations.  She uses her powers as a spirit medium to keep contact with Mia, who goes on to speak through Pearl.  She shows extraordinary courage throughout her time in captivity, going so far as to tell Phoenix to declare Matt Engarde guilty, that she will be fine somehow.
Dick Gumshoe was ready and willing to get into the action, as always.  He is fiercely loyal to Phoenix in this case, if not a little reckless.  Even though he’s temporarily kicked off the force, he is still able to investigate the crime in his own way, and he rushes to get new evidence to the court on time.  He doesn’t quite get there (running red lights and getting into a car wreck is not the best way to reach the courthouse on time!) but his heart was in the right place.
Franziska von Karma refused to be written off, and became one of the key players toward the end.  In the beginning she is knocked out of commission when she’s shot, but this doesn’t keep her down for long.  Although she has her own agenda and only wants to pass a guilty verdict down for the sake of her record (the von Karma way of perfect victories, no matter the cost), it was her reaching the courthouse with decisive evidence that turned the case and the situation around for everyone involved.
****
There are likely details I didn’t mention but this case was a lot to take in.  I was absorbed in its story every step of the way and the hours flew by as I played through it.  It was a great finale with a mix of despair, hope and pure excitement, where every characters’ writing was at its best so far.  I feel like the narrative and everyone in it was handled with the utmost care, and I am hopeful to see what the entirety of Trials and Tribulations (along with its own finale) has in store for me.
With that being said, I will keep on playing through Trials and Tribulations, the Investigations games, the later trilogy and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles at my own pace.
Who knows?
Maybe I will see more miracles happen.

I have an idea about how to pivot the rest of my 100 with the lack of open mics. See my Instagram stories for pieces of a song that will play the whole song a little each day!
