Shipping Now! 🔥 "Hunter Thompson used to punch out pages of Ernest Hemingway on his typewriter "just to get the feeling of what it was like to write that way," drummer T.J. Childers comments. "The same can be said for anyone learning a great cover song: there's a lot to be deduced from the information there. Actually learning the songs can lead to inspirational, new musical ideas." INTER ARMA's inspiration can indeed be felt throughout the 8 tracks therein; from the melancholic, spoken intro leading to the explosive, riff heavy take on the Neil Young classic "Southern Man", to the nearly pitch-black metallic approach of Hüsker Dü's "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill", every song on Garbers Days Revisited captures the sounds that make INTER ARMA one of the scene's most unique and creative bands. Childers continues, "Covers have been an integral part of Inter Arma since the beginning of the band and some of these songs have a direct lineage while others are a little more... obscure. As timing would have it, we hope this provides a bit of an escape for listeners, given the surreal circumstances we're in at the moment, because after all, great art should provide an escape which is part of why we chose to do this: sometimes you just wanna be runnin' down a dream..." @interarmamusic @relapserecords #interarma #garbersdaysrevisited #relapserecords #metal #rock #rockmusic #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #vinyladdict #vinylcollector #vinyloftheday #vinyllovers #vinylgram #grindpromotionrecords (presso Grindpromotion Records Hq) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCdlq4yJ--X/?igshid=pmwhzmjx8edm

INTER ARMA SHARE “PURPLE RAIN” COVER
The song appears on Garbers Days Revisited, which will be released July 10th on Relapse Records.
Tumblr media
Richmond's INTER ARMA, reigning masters of the slow build, celebrate their past on Garbers Days Revisited, their new covers record, recorded in between tours in support of their critically acclaimed 2019 full length Sulphur English.
Listen to INTER ARMA’s cover of “Purple Rain” by PRINCE now on YouTube (+ please post/share)!
INTER ARMA Comments:  "This was never meant to be heard publicly. It was meant to be outrageous- to be played late at night while laughing and drinking beer with our friends. Because that's what this is: Inter Arma covering the greatest pop song of the 1980s, and arguably of all time, by Prince, who HATED when people covered his music.  The vocals were done in one take by the drummer and not pitch corrected, because who else can sing like that? Prince. So we opted to stay honest and simple because we never thought that the general public would hear it. Once Relapse heard it there was a little bit of back and forth between the two camps and it was decided, reluctantly, to be included on the record.  We hope everyone enjoys this and gets a little bit of a chuckle because I think we could all use that right about now. Stay safe, stay outrageous, BLM.”
Garbers Days Revisited, named after the band's former practice space, was once again tracked at Dark Art Audio in Madison, TN. INTER ARMA show off their wide array of influences, tackling covers by Nine Inch Nails, Prince, Cro-Mags, and more. Garbers Days Revisited sees INTER ARMA redefining the very aspects of the music that inspired and influenced them from their very beginnings.
"Hunter Thompson used to punch out pages of Ernest Hemingway on his typewriter just to get the feeling of what it was like to write that way," drummer T.J. Childers comments. "The same can be said for anyone learning a great cover song: there's a lot to be deduced from the information there. Actually learning the songs can lead to inspirational, new musical ideas."

Hello, everyone! I don’t like making lists that talk badly about some of the books I didn’t enjoy because they could be favorites of others. So, to avoid the negativity, I’m going with a simple top books of the year list! I read some pretty awesome books last year, so I’m excited to share! Not all of these came out in 2018 either, and I’m not counting rereads. I want this list to consist of anything that I read for the first time in 2018.
Just to clarify – these are also going to be in the order of when I read them, not in the order of how much I liked them.
Tumblr media
1. The Cruel Prince & The Wicked King by Holly Black
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
It’s fitting that the first book I read in 2018 also happened to be one of my favorites. I’m sure by now you all have heard and/or read Cruel Prince, and Wicked King actually comes out in just 4 days! This series just keeps getting better, and I’m dying a little inside every day until I can get my hands on the third one.
2. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I really loved Jenn’s first book, Alex Approximately, so it only makes sense that I’d enjoy her second. I liked the setting and characters of this story a lot, and I look forward to her other releases!
3. The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This one was hit or miss for a lot of people. Personally, I really enjoyed it. I liked the magical forest and the incorporation of the fantasy stories scattered throughout. I’m super excited to get a release of just the stories mentioned sometime soon too!
4. The Art of Feeling by Laura Tims
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I feel like this one went under the radar for a lot of people. I hadn’t heard of it until I randomly saw it suggested to me on Amazon. I took a chance, and I actually really liked it. The characters all felt very real, and I think everything wrapped up nicely in the end.
5. Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertali
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Ashley and I listened to the audiobook of this one on our way home from her mom’s house in Cincinnati earlier in the year. We knew we wanted to see the movie, so I’m glad we read the book first! I highly recommend the audiobook, the narrator does a great job. Simon is snarky, and you can’t help but love him and his story.
6. The Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi
Star Rating: (average) 4.25 out of 5 stars
I was familiar with this series before 2018, but I never got around to actually reading it until just right before the release of Restore Me in March. I’m a GIANT Warner fan now, and I can’t wait to see what happens in book five! I think it might hurt me a little.
7. Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston
Star Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
This one was pitched as Anastasia in space, so I was instantly sold. I have read Poston’s contemporary book, but I prefer fantasy, so I decided to start with this one. I enjoyed it, and I’ve heard the sequel might make me sad. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Also, I will go down defending the fact that his name is Di (like the letter D) because his name is Dmitri for crying out loud.
8. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The hype was strong with this one, and I’m happy to say that it lived up to it for me. I’m really excited to see if Tomi can keep up with that hype and deliver on book two come March!
9. To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I don’t think a lot of people gave much attention to this release. I really enjoyed it, and I loved the complexity of the main character. Was she good? Was she evil? It was hard to tell at times, and I loved it.
10. Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I keep talking about this one, but that’s because it felt so real to me. I thought the characters said and did things that anyone in real life would, and that’s what makes a contemporary for me. I’ll definitely check out anything else Mary writes.
11. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Star Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
I read this one so I could go see the movie – spoiler alert: don’t see the movie. The book is FAR better than that trash film. I really loved the nostalgic feel of the story, and I was really rooting for Wade.
12. Strange the Dreamer & Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
It feels strange to me, no pun intended, that I read this for the first time last year because it feels like I’ve loved it for so long. This duology is perfect for any fantasy fan, and I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve made friends read it – and they’ve all enjoyed it – and I tell customers at work to buy it all the time. Just do yourself a favor and pick it up.
13. An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The same situation happened with this series that happened with the Shatter Me ones. I knew Reaper was coming out, so I binged the whole series. Let me tell you, it’s amazing. The world is great, the plot is intriguing, and Elias is my little baby. Nothing better happen to him in book four, Sabaa. I’ll come for you.
14. Beyond a Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake
Star Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Ashley and I buddy-read this one, and we both really liked it! The main love interest does seem a bit holier-than-thou, but other than that, it’s a solid read. The magic elements are what really sold me on it.
15. Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
Star Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
I don’t think this one got enough love last year. I really enjoyed Theo’s journey throughout the first book, and I’m curious to see where book two will take us. The ending of the first left things a bit all over the place (in a good way), so I’m sure book two will pick up there and be awesome.
16. Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely loved Caraval when I read it back in 2017, so I was super pumped for this sequel. Let me tell you, it was better. I didn’t think it could be possible, but I actually really loved Tella’s story more than Scarlett’s. I’m hyped to see the two girls come together in Finale later this year, and I honestly have no idea where the story is going to go.
17. Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan
Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Everyone is super excited for this release in April, and guys, it’s deserving. I went into this with super low expectations because of the hype, but it was so good. I loved all the characters, and the plot is captivating. Things would happen, and I would actually gasp. Just do yourselves a favor and preorder this bad boy.
18. Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte
Star Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
BookCon 2018 was apparently a disaster when it came to the drop for this book. Penguin said they were dropping a surprise 2019 ARC, but Ashley and I left NYC that morning and missed it. Looking back, I’m glad we did because it turned into a madhouse. Thankfully, I was able to do a quick trade on Twitter for this, and I’m glad I did! The story blends together fantasy and mystery so well, and I felt like I was right in the middle of the “whodunnit” the whole time.

That’s all, folks! I hope some of these books made your favorites of 2018 as well, and here’s to reading a bunch of great ones in 2019!

Goodbye July, and hello August!
I cannot believe how quickly this summer is flying by.  One minute my kids are getting out of school for summer break, and the next I am gathering lists for back to school shopping!  July was a crazy month for me, but despite all the craziness I did manage to read 9 books & get a good amount of blogging done!  Yay for productivity!  My biggest news this month is that we bought a new house.  Unfortunately this isn’t a simple move… we are completely renovating the house over the next few months before we move in.  My husband flips homes for a living, and assures me that he can get this done in 2 months.  I’m not holding my breath lol  My goal is to move in before Christmas.  Please send me good vibes for my sanity throughout this process 🙂
Let’s see what I got accomplished in July, shall we?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Book titles link to Goodreads
» Schindler’s List by Thomas Keneally
Feelings in a few thoughts:  hard to follow at times – possibly due to audiobook format?; love this piece of history; because this is nonfiction it felt cold – would love to read a  fictional account; want to see the film adaptation now
» Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh
Feelings in a few thoughts: took a little while to get into; strong female lead – strength drawn from her mind; feminist thoughts; political intrigue; HOT love scenes; confusing fantasy elements; will definitely continue on with this series
» Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman
Feelings in a few thoughts: felt like a bedtime story;  perfect book to read aloud to kids; short & sweet
» Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
*3.5 Stars
Feelings in a few thoughts: bad-ass female lead; example of how to do the hate – love trope well; witty banter; good concept with fantasy elements; wanted more action out of a PIRATE book; solid read but could have been more
» The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt
*3.5 Stars
Feelings in a few thoughts:  outside my reading comfort zone; very much a western; play format? didn’t really understand the intermissions; dry humor – which I appreciated; journey where characters must face adversity along the way; enjoyed how everything panned out in the end – but wasn’t the dramatic ending I was anticipating; slower paced; struggled with my rating – possibly a 4 star book; won’t be for everyone
» Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Feelings in a few thoughts: went in with low expectations, but pleasantly surprised; gave me Wizard of Oz vibes; enjoyed the overall plot – darker than anticipating w/ good mystery elements; writing felt forced at times, like the author was trying a little too hard; too much sensory description – particularly smells; wanted a little more visual world building; wonder if I enjoyed this more because I haven’t read The Night Circus yet?
» This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
3.5 Stars
Feelings in a few thoughts: gorgeous writing as per expected with Schwab; what makes someone a “monster”?; liked how Kate was rough around the edges; a few YA tropes & clichés; didn’t connect to the story like I did with Schwab’s Shades of Magic series; definitely think this book is leaps and bounds above many of the YA books out there
» Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Feelings in a few thoughts: One of my top reads of 2017; completely mesmerized by this story; Lazlo Strange is my new book boyfriend; unique & fantastical; moral questions; what makes someone a hero? a monster?; NOT a fan of the insta-love but this was my only issue with the book; the ending!  how will I wait for the second book?!
» Enchanted Islands by Allison Amend
4.5 Stars
Feelings in a few words: this book is a gem – I wish more people would give it a chance; technically WWII historical fiction, but doesn’t go into the war much; fictionalized life of real person, Frances Conway; explores different types of relationships & love; espionage story, but not exactly action packed; more drama than I was anticipating; would make a good book club selection

I am super excited that I *should* be able to hit 100 books this year!  This will be my biggest reading year EVER 🙂

happy new year abby!!!!!!! congrats on meeting your reading goal, i’m glad that despite your busy life you’re still able to enjoy reading for yourself <3 some bookish questions, if you don’t mind …
what was your favourite reread of 2023? what book did you mean to read but ended up not? what books were you looking forward to but disappointed by? what book took you by surprise? your favourite series? your favourite standalone? your least favourite book(s)? what book did you write your favourite review about? and finally, what book(s) are you most looking forward to reading in 2024?
may this year be full of blessings to you!
hiiiiii love, happy new year!!!! i'm finally back on my laptop so i'm sorry this is a few days late <333
favourite reread: i did a lot of rereading this year and i loved them all but probably six of crows!! every time i reread that series i'm a little nervous that its not going to have the same magic it did the last time and it always does and this time was no exception its just going to be a forever favourite and i'm so glad i reread it
a book i meant to read and didn't get to: there were a few i meant to at the very least start over my break that i didn't get a chance to (this biography i picked up at a school social and the hundred years war on palestine by rashid khalidi), books i had on hold at the library but it was just never the right time (as long as the lemon trees grow by zoulfa katouh), and my book lovers reread that i was all set to start and then i didn't read for like 3 weeks
a book i was looking forward to that disappointed me: greywaren by maggie stiefvater was soooo messy plotwise and there were things i wanted wrapped up that were just not addressed in a satisfying way yes i gave it 5 stars the epilogue made me cry those 5 stars are for declan lynch and for how much i love the trc/tdt universe as a whole pls take my rating system a little bit seriously (so i guess it wasn't 100% disappointing i just wanted more from the final book) (honourary mentions to nine liars by maureen johnson bc it was sososo fun for 99% of the book but the very end was so unnecessary i'll never forgive her, and harlem shuffle by colson whitehead i liked the writing i just thought the plot would be different from what it ended up being)
a book that took me by surprise: the day of the jackal was supposed to be something i picked up for a few hours for shits and giggles since i've never had any real interest in 70's spy thrillers but i actually enjoyed it enough to finish! also these violent delights by micah nemerever surprised me because i did not know what to expect at. all. and i still dont know how to describe the feelings that book gave me but i certainly didn't expect them
my favourite series: beartown!!!!!! you know exactly why i don't even have to explain </3 (honourary mention to sandra gullands josephine b trilogy its one hell of a historical fiction series and i enjoyed it SO much)
my favourite standalone: rebecca by daphne du maurier!! its just the most beautifully written book that captivated me from the very first page <33
least favourite books: the last word by taylor adams (extraordinarily mid upon first read and it just seems so bleh looking back), ready player one by ernest cline (i can see why my boyfriend loves it but it just didn't appeal to me at all), 20,000 leagues under the sea by jules verne (jules verne knows sooooo many facts about the ocean and electricity and he put every single one of them in this book in very long paragraphs but i forgive my prof for making me read it)
my favourite review: i didn't really write any solid reviews this year (something i'm hoping to do more of in 2024) but my favourite mini reviews are the ones i left for wuthering heights and 20,000 leagues under the sea bc i think i'm funny and bc i think they sum up my reading experience quite well
books i'm most looking forward to reading in 2024: soooo many a curse for true love by stephanie garber, a man called ove by fredrik backman, alone with you in the ether by olivie blake, divine rivals by rebecca ross (!!), penance by eliza clark to name a few

Pre Order Now! 🤘 INTER ARMA celebrate their past on Garbers Days Revisited, their new covers record, recorded in between tours in support of their critically acclaimed 2019 full length Sulphur English. The record, named after the band's practice space, was once again tracked at Dark Art Audio in Madison, TN. INTER ARMA show off their wide array of influences, tackling covers by Nine Inch Nails, Prince, Cro-Mags, and more. Garbers Days Revisited sees INTER ARMA redefining the very aspects of the music that inspired and influenced them from their very beginnings. "Hunter Thompson used to punch out pages of Ernest Hemingway on his typewriter "just to get the feeling of what it was like to write that way," drummer T.J. Childers continues, "Covers have been an integral part of Inter Arma since the beginning of the band and some of these songs have a direct lineage while others are a little more... obscure. As timing would have it, we hope this provides a bit of an escape for listeners, given the surreal circumstances we're in at the moment, because after all, great art should provide an escape which is part of why we chose to do this: sometimes you just wanna be runnin' down a dream..." . . #interarma #garbersdaysrevisited #relapserecords #metal #metalhead #heavymetal #doom #sludge #stoner #alternative #black #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinylcommunity #vinyladdict #vinylcollectionpost #grindpromotionrecords (presso Bassano del Grappa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXupoqJuyC/?igshid=16is6evzfvj2t

INTER ARMA ANNOUNCE ‘GARBERS DAYS REVISITED’
The 8-song cover album will be released July 10th on Relapse Records.
Tumblr media
“Unlike a lot of metal bands, Inter Arma don’t pledge allegiance to any particular subgenre. There’s doom in their sound, but there’s death metal and psychedelia and ’90s noise-rock, too. For four albums now, they’ve made music that sometimes stares into the abyss and sometimes embodies that abyss." - Stereogum
Richmond's Inter Arma, reigning masters of the slow build, celebrate their past on Garbers Days Revisited, their new covers record, recorded in between tours in support of their critically acclaimed 2019 full length Sulphur English.
Listen to (+ share) Inter Arma’s cover of Neil Young’s “Southern Man” on YouTube and on all streaming services here.
The band comments:  “Inter Arma as a whole are massive Neil Young fans. ‘Southern Man’ has been a staple of our live set for over a decade and we finally got around to putting it to tape. We hope you enjoy our spin on this timeless and still extremely relevant song.“
Garbers Days Revisited is due out July 10th on CD/LP/Digital formats. Physical packages are available for pre-order via Relapse.com. Digital Downloads/Streaming Services are available here.
"Hunter Thompson used to punch out pages of Ernest Hemingway on his typewriter just to get the feeling of what it was like to write that way," drummer T.J. Childers says. Hi everyone! Half of 2018 has already passed so it’s time for a mid year evaluation of my Reading Goals for which I found this fun little tag! Here we go –
Best book you’ve read so far
Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Ever since I finished reading this, I’ve been mentally kicking myself for not getting to it sooner. I LOVED IT. The most amazing characters I’ve ever read about!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to
Oh where do I begin?
War Storm by Victoria Aveyard
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare
The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee
Ugh. I can’t wait!
Biggest disappointment of the year
Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu
When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
I’m so upset about the first because after Wonder Woman, I really had high expectations from Batman but it was just average. Same goes for When Dimple Met Rishi.
Biggest surprise of the year
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I’d been avoiding reading this one because I didn’t quite like the cover but I finally caved when I heard that Spielsberg’s movie adaptation was being released. This book is fantastic! I enjoyed reading it so much! Can’t wait to watch the movie now (since I missed it when it was in the theatres).
Favorite new author
Mackenzi Lee
Even though I’ve only read one book by her, Mackenzi Lee goes straight on my autobuy list.
Your newest fictional crush
Monty
MINE. ALL MINE. EVERYBODY ELSE SHOO!
Your newest favorite character
Fu
I recently read the first two books in the McCall and Company series that fall under the Mystery/Humor genre and I loved Fu! Quite possibly the most hilarious character ever. You can check out my reviews of Workman’s Complication and Swollen  Identity.
A book that made you cry
So Near the Horizon by Jessica Koch
Well I didn’t really cry but this book almost did make me want to. It was just so freaking sad!
A book that made you happy
Swollen Identity by Rich Leder
Swollen Identity was the only thing that made me laugh in what turned out to be a pretty bad month for me. I loved reading it quite a lot!
Favorite book to film adaptation you’ve seen this year
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
This movie was EVERYTHING! I loved Love Simon! You can check out my Movie vs. Book Review.
Favorite post you’ve written this year
Is it cheating if I name 4? There are 4 that I really enjoyed writing this year
My Little Blogging Quirks
Discussion Post – Authors Attacking Negative Reviewers
Why I Don’t Tell My Friends About My Blog
These Are a Few of My Favorite Things – Book Quotes
Most beautiful book you’ve bought this year
Well that’s easy since I’ve only bought one paperback this year, but luckily it looks gorgeous!
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
War Storm by Victoria Aveyard
I need closure on this series and I want to finish reading it before I get any spoilers.
And that’s all for today! Hope you have a great day! Until next time –
