Jamie - he practically refused to go up till the last second then finally caved but once the movie starts, he starts tearing up because he also does not feel Kenenough
Jon – he defiantly was the one to ask to go see the movie but insists to all his friends he’s going because you wanted to
Khal Drogo – agrees to go on the condition of seeing Oppenheimer before but the only thing he talks about for the following week is barbie
Obryen – it was your idea for the tickets but his for the matching pink outfits and photoshoot beforehand and he definitely rolls his eyes at anyone who sees Oppenheimer instead
Podrick – desperate to see barbie with you and is excited the whole week leading up to it. he’s already buying tickets for next week as your leaving the theatre
Ramsay - you both argue about whether to see Oppenheimer or barbie and eventually it gets settled by agreeing to see the separate movies at the same time as long as he gets you a large popcorn as punishment for having no taste
Robb – doesn’t get the fuss at first but as soon as he is sat in the cinema chair, he is mesmerised by the movie
Sandor – if you think this man would be caught dead sitting watching barbie, you’d be sorely mistaken. however, that’s mostly because he hates leaving the house, but he will pirate the movie and watch it on the sofa with you
Theon – makes fun of the movie constantly and says you should go see Oppenheimer instead but when you get to the theatre, he’s sheepishly holding two barbie tickets
Tormund – buys the tickets for you before you even ask and hypes up your pink barbie outfit, buys himself a bright pink t-shirt and just goes for the good vibes
Tyrion – goes with you unashamed and in a bright pink suit insisting if he was in barbie world, he’d be a barbie or at least an Allan not just another Ken

GoT Girls
Arya – insists it can’t be that good and even pretends to hate it but the next day she sneaks off to go see it again alone and then you end up finding a new barbie she bought in her room
Brienne – she felt a bit embarrassed about going at first, but she ended up relating to the movie so much that she cried and bought herself a barbie dream house to heal her inner child
Daenerys – she didn’t think she’d like it since she has more of a horror vibe however once it starts, she starts tearing up and secretly loves it
Margery – she bought out like half the cinema getting tickets for her and her squad and plans matching outfits for everyone to go in and makes 1000 TikTok’s about the whole thing
Sansa – she has been planning this since the movie was announced and is ready with a Pinterest board of outfits for you to pick with
Yara – defiantly put up a fight and wanted to see Oppenheimer instead but she is a sucker for you and eventually agrees and pretends she didn’t love it afterwards even though barbie is now all she can think about

HotD Boys
Aegon – all he talks about is barbie which mainly started to wind Aemond but when you offered to get tickets he jumped at the chance and started taking it seriously to the point of buying a custom “I’m the ken, they’re barbie” shirt with a pink arrow pointing at you
Aemond – he really wanted to see Oppenheimer first, but he cannot say no to you so finally caved and went with you, but he was on the edge of his seat all night and you missed the first 10 minutes of Oppenheimer since he wouldn’t stop talking about barbie
Daemon – when you tell him you want to go, he ends up pulling strings and tells you that you’re going to the official premier by giving you a brand new custom pink dress and even rocks up in a pink suit to match
Jace – this man bought these tickets the first day they were listed and is defending Margot Robbie online when he is not gushing to you how amazing it was and how good your barbie premier outfit was
Tumblr media
HotD girls
Alicent – she tried to play it off cool as if it weren’t her thing but was secretly thrilled you asked her to go however, she only played it cool till opening credits started and she squealed in excitement
Baela – you didn’t think she’d be too interested since she was more of a tom boy than her sister but she surprised you by whipping out the massive box of barbies from her closet from her childhood when she begged you to go with her even though you had already said yes like twenty times
Rhaena –she has been playing the barbie sound track over and over, crying at half the songs and dancing with you around the house to the next so you bet your ass she went to watch it on the premier day Heleana – for some reason she was really nervous to ask you to go with her but when she did you of course said yes, and she started planning a pastel pink outfit and ordered you both custom barbie earrings from Esty
Rhaenyra – she was down to see it, even getting the best seats in advance for you but she did not expect it to heal her inner child so much since she stopped playing with barbies after her mother died since she thought her mum looked like barbie

New Girl on the Block (4)
(Y’all ready to read the next update??? Enjoy part four of this fic and if you’re interested, feel free to check out the mini series connected to this called the Journal Entries. It’s just little journal snippets from the two dorks that I decided to write for fun :D)
Ch.1 / Ch.3 / Ch.5
Chapter 4: Get to Know You
Marinette slipped on her white, non-flour-covered leather jacket and pushed her pigtails back so they wouldn’t be tucked into her outfit. She then smoothed out her pink dress with a smile, admiring the black flowers that she’d stitched along the bottom. This dress had been one of her stress-relieving projects, but it turned out quite well, in her opinion.
Once Papa had finished teaching her friends how to fold the dough, he put their croissants into the fridge to chill them and instructed everyone to go upstairs and wash up. Marinette dutifully took them up to her room where her personal bathroom was and taught them how to use the shower, but when she tried to lead one of them to her parent’s bathroom as well, they insisted that she take a shower there herself.
“What kind of gentlemen would we be if we forced the ladies to wait on us?” Claude had said light-heartedly, though she could tell he meant it. Allegra’s smirk as she walked in the bathroom to take a shower first was proof of that.
The notion had warmed Marinette’s heart, coaxing a giggle from her each time she thought about it. It might be hard to see sometimes, but Claude, Allan, and Felix truly were a considerate and chivalrous group of boys.
Now, She’s finished her shower in her parent’s bathroom and gone back up to her bedroom, where Allegra, Claude, and Allan had been patiently waiting. Allegra was nice and clean again, wearing the long, purple shirt and black leggings that Marinette had given her, and Claude appeared to have just exited the shower, his damp hair sticking to his face and dripping across his borrowed, black and blue “O.K” shirt. Allan was still covered in flour.
Allegra smiled at Marinette from her spot on the chaise as she re-braided her long, golden blonde hair. “Thanks for the extra clothes, Mari! These are amazing.”
“Yeah!” Claude agreed enthusiastically, holding out his with a grin. “This shirt is awesome!”
Marinette glanced down to hide her blush. “I-It’s the least I could do.”
“We still appreciate it.” Allan replied.
“Oh!” Marinette said, suddenly thinking about the fact that Allan was still covered in flour. “Allan, do you want to use Maman’s shower? You don’t have to stand around waiting for Felix.”
That who she assumed was occupying the shower, anyway. The water was still running, and everyone but Felix was present.
Allan waved a hand. “Nah, it’s fine. I’ll be getting a shower soon if Felix would hurry up.”
Marinette chuckled at Allan’s obvious call to Felix, even more so when Felix shouted back from the bathroom, “You’re the one that let me go first!”
“I didn’t know you would take a day and a half!”
“That’s still your fault then, isn’t it?” Felix shot back.
Allan scoffed and crossed his arms, causing Marinette to offer her parent’s shower again out of guilt. She had been the one to throw flour on him, after all.
“Are you sure you don’t want to-”
The bathroom door swung open, effectively cutting Marinette off, and Felix stepped out with one hand on his hip and the other hand on the towel that was draped across his head. He shot Allan a glare, practically growling the words, “There. I’m out. Are you happy?”
“Delighted.” Allan responded sarcastically.
Marinette might have been concerned about the growing conflict had she not been focused on Felix’s outfit. Or rather, how well it suited him. The black, three-quarter-sleeved shirt that she’d given him, along with the plaid green, button-up shirt she’d provided to go underneath, clung to his waist, revealing his surprisingly slender figure. The dark grey jeans he wore in place of his dress pants didn’t fit the outfit exactly, but they worked well enough, and Marinette eagerly started taking mental notes for future adjustments.
Allan grabbed his clothes and walked into the bathroom, while Felix glared daggers at him until the bathroom door closed.
“Woah~” Allegra crowed, easily breaking the tension. “You should wear casual outfits more often, Felix. They really suit you.”
Claude smirked. “No kidding. I swear you’ve worn the same suit for the whole two years we’ve known.”
Felix turned his glare to Claude with a scoff. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’ve worn plenty of suits, each one made differently.”
Allegra snorted. “That wasn’t.. That was not the point, Felix.”
Felix narrowed his eyes, the barest hint of confusion finding its way to his features, and Marinette took that opportunity to speak up.
“How’s the outfit? Does it fit alright?” She asked. Hopefully she can find the original measurements for the outfit if it does fit fine, because Felix was most likely going to become a regular customer. Maybe he wouldn’t hire her for actual commissions, but she might end up making something for him on impulse. (as you do)
Felix caught her eye, his glare slowly fading as he registered her question.
“The fabric is extremely comfortable, and the clothes fit perfectly.” He said after a moment. “You said you made these?”
She nodded. “With my sewing machine. I was thinking of putting a green paw print on the shirt too, but I haven’t gotten around to it.”
Felix hummed, idly pulling his towel from on top of his head to around his shoulders. “I see. Thank you for lending them to me.”
Marinette blinked, suddenly finding herself captivated by the way his hair fell across his face. Still being damp, various strands stuck to his forehead and cheeks, and he reached up to brush them away. This brought her attention to his face, which, for some reason, she hadn’t quite noticed before. The defined jawline, the subtle-yet-there cheek bones, the pointed nose- all of his features were sharp. Even his eyes held a silver tint to them that reminded her of steel.
These observations dragged her to one, rather important revelation: Felix Culpa was actually a fairly handsome person.
“Marinette?” Felix said, drawing her from her thoughts. “Are you alright?”
A rush of heat swarmed her cheeks, and Marinette straightened. “W-what? I mean yes! Yeah, I’m totally fine, I.. yes.”
“Hey, speaking of clothes!” Claude piped up, graciously saving Marinette from her own awkwardness. “How’s my prince costume going?”
Marinette twirled around in her rolling chair and grabbed for her sketching notebook. A distraction was definitely something she needed right now.
“I’ve got a few different ideas, but you need to come tell which one you like best.” She explained as she flipped open the notebook.
Claude hopped up from the stray chest he’d been sitting on and practically bounced over to her seat. She let him scan each page, smiling when he started humming “Ooh’s” and “Aah’s”.
“I can only pick one?! But they’re all so good!” Claude remarked, almost exasperated.
Marinette chuckled. “Well.. I guess I can make all of them for you, but you at least need to choose which one I start on.”
Claude gasped. “You mean you’re going to make all of these for me?”
“It’s going to take a month or so to get them all done.” She warned. “But-”
Claude scooped her into a bone-crushing hug, briefly reminding her of her father. “Thank you, Mari! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You’re the best!”
Marinette laughed and gave him a light pat on the arm. “You’re welcome.”
Her smile widened as Claude eagerly grabbed the notebook and ran back to his designated chest to look through the drawing again. It was nice to see someone who was also enthusiastic about fashion. She’d gotten tired of talking to people who simply didn’t understand the hype of creating unique styles of clothing.
“You know he’s never going to leave you alone now, right?” Felix commented next to her.
Marinette offered him a glance as she said, “I think I can live with that.”
Felix shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
She smiled at that. Felix may be striking, but that didn’t have to change anything. Lots of people were striking. And lots of people remained friends despite that.
“Oh,” Felix muttered, seeming to remember something, “Where do you want me to put my clothes? They’re still in the bathroom because of Allan, but..”
“Uhm.. I think Maman said she was going to wash them.” Marinette answered. “She wanted to try to get them clean before supper for all of you.”
“Ah, supper.” Claude cut in, heaving a jokingly wistful sigh. “I can’t wait for that. If your mom’s croissants can taste that heavenly, then her full meals must be amazing.”
He sunk against the chest for emphasis, not realizing that there was a gap between the chest and the wall. The sudden weight threw the chest off balance, and it tipped forward, causing Claude to get jerked backwards. He flailed his arms briefly and yelped before crashing to the floor. The front of the chest hit the ground as well, and the impact popped it open, scattering various objects across the floor.
“Oh, Claude!”
“Are you okay?”
The girls rushed to his side to help him up, but Felix shot him a flat look.
“First the kitchen and now her bedroom.” He said curtly. “Should we tear up the living room next? Or perhaps the dining room has more fragile items?”
Allegra rolled her eyes. “Felix, can you at least try to be sympathetic.”
“I am being sympathetic. Marinette doesn’t have the money to replace things at the drop of a hat like we do. It’s rude to behave so recklessly in her home.”
Marinette glanced up at Felix, not sure whether to find his words sweet or offensive. “Trust me, it’s fine. This chest is old anyway.”
Felix’s frown told her that he didn’t agree on the matter, but before he could argue further, the bathroom door swung open again.
“What happened?” Allan asked, his hair still dripping wet. “I heard the crash. Is anyone hurt?”
“Only my pride.” Claude groaned in response. He was sitting up now and rubbing his head as Allegra switched between scolding and coddling.
Allan sighed with relief. “Oh, good. You can’t hurt something that’s not there.”
“Hey!”
Marinette giggled at the comment. “Allan, how is your outfit? Do I need to make any adjustments?”
Allan glanced down at his clothes. She’d given him a maroon shirt with a blue heartbeat line in the center, a black and blue shirt to go underneath, and a pair of black jeans. He didn’t appear to be wearing the second shirt, though.
“Oh, they fit great.” He said, twisted his torso a bit to get a better feel for the new clothes. “I didn’t have time to put on the second shirt, though. I heard the crash and panicked.”
Marinette offered him a smile. “That’s fine. I can just put it back in the closet.”
Allan nodded and looked down at the mess. “So Claude spilled this chest?”
“Yeah, he was being an idiot.” Allegra remarked as she picked up one of the trinkets. “You know. Nothing new.”
“Wow. can you guys lay off for two seconds?” Claude huffed. He reached forward to pick up one of the objects as well, curiosity overtaking his annoyance. “What is all of this stuff, anyway?”
Marinette glanced at the miscellaneous objects to check- she had several trunks that acted as ‘junk drawers’ -and immediately cringed when she recognized a black hat with rainbow colors stitched along the bottom.
“Oh..” It was Adrien’s gift chest. She’d almost forgotten that she had it. “They’re, um.. They’re just crafts, really.”
“Just crafts?” Claude repeated, holding up a crocheted Ladybug doll. “These are awesome!”
Marinette watched them for a moment. “...do you want them?”
The group looked up in shock, and Marinette quickly added, “Y-You don’t have to take them! I’ve just.. Uh.. they’re like junk? I mean, not junk, but this is my junk chest.. Sort of. I’ve just been meaning to get rid of them. So if you want them, you can have them.”
Allegra frowned. “Are you sure? It looks like you put a lot of effort into these.”
Marinette nodded. “Positive. Take whatever you want.”
Although hesitant at first, the group continued to look through the gifts, and little by little, they started to take some. A smile came to Marinette’s lips as she watched the pile of Adrien junk dwindle. She had spent a lot of time on making the presents, but there was no way she’d be giving them to Adrien now. So what was the point of keeping them in her room? To serve as a mocking reminder of how blind she had been while loving him? No thanks.
By the time they were done, the chest only had half the gifts it used to, and Marinette quickly decided that she would donate the leftovers once she got the chance.
“Thanks for the stuff, Mari!” Claude said cheerfully, his hands full of various objects.
Allegra nodded, holding a few things herself. “Yeah, you really do spoil us.”
“Which is saying something, considering we’re rich.” Allan teased, pocketing the two items that he’d decided to snatch.
Marinette chuckled. “You’re helping me more than I am you.”
She stood up and walked to the bathroom to grab the boys’ old clothes. “I’m gonna bring these down to Maman, but feel free to look around until I get back.”
The group voiced their agreements, and Marinette climbed down the trapdoor ladder with the pile of clothes in hand, feeling like another weight had been lifted off of her shoulders.
Getting rid of Adrien’s gifts was one more step towards happiness, and she couldn’t wait to keep walking.
~~~~~~
One can tell a lot about a person by their bedroom. How clean they were, whether they were sentimental, which things they found important- a bedroom could quite literally be considered a box in which someone stored their entire personality. That’s why Felix had been anticipating this part of the visit. Someone can be a master manipulator, but their room would always show their true selves. And it only took one look for Felix to know..
Marinette really loved the color pink.
Seriously, she had it everywhere. The walls, the furniture, the carpet- How was she not sick of the color by now? Felix was sick of it, and he’d only been there for about twenty minutes!
Pushing the pink thought aside, he continued poking around her room. Marinette had gone downstairs to pass his clothes off to her mother, so that gave him a bit of time to inspect the space unsupervised. Not that he was planning on doing anything scandalous. It merely gave him the opportunity of observing Marinette’s room on his own terms.
When she told him that her room was up in the attic, he’d been understandably shocked. The attic didn’t sound like a spacious place to sleep, let alone work on homework and other personal things. Seeing it now, though, Felix realized that that wasn’t the case. The attic was actually quite open. There was a desk, a closet, various chests, a bathroom, and she still had a good portion of the room empty. He wondered if that was thanks to the original size of the room or thanks to Marinette’s resourcefulness.
Her cleaning style wasn’t too bad, either. Don’t get him wrong, there were things scattered everywhere, but it was a specific type of scattered, like an organized chaos. He had a feeling that she knew where most of her necessities were.
Felix moved to her desk, where most of the mess was focused. There were papers, sewing needles, scraps of fabric, and pencils spread across the surface. Her interest in fashion certainly shined through, as most of the papers were filled with various sketches and measurements. He found that admirable. When someone usually speaks of their ‘dream job’, they speak of it as a fantasy, one that they never intend to fully pursue, but Marinette was obviously reaching as high as she could to grasp her goal. She even had a mannequin in her room.
“Marinette’s room is so cool!” Claude exclaimed from the loft up top. “She even has a balcony!”
Felix glanced upwards, briefly setting the papers he’d been studying aside. There’s a balcony upstairs? He didn’t recall seeing a balcony on the way in.
“Claude, you have a balcony.” Allegra reminded him with an amused smile.
“Yeah, but mine only extends from the side of the building.” Claude defended. “This one’s on the roof!”
Ah, so that’s why Felix hadn’t seen it.
Allan frowned. “Really? Isn’t that a little dangerous?”
“It’s got a rail.”
“Oh, okay. That’s fine then.”
Allegra chuckled as she brushed her hands against the hat on Marinette’s mannequin. “Marinette’s room is pretty neat, though.”
“I think it’s just Marinette who’s cool.” Allan remarked.
Allegra and Claude heartily agreed, and Felix nodded. “Cool” probably wouldn’t be the exact word that he’d use to describe her, but overall, it wasn’t far off.
“Can you believe we’ve only known her for a week?” Claude asked as he climbed down to their level. “It feels like we’ve known her forever already.”
“Yeah, but I think that’s just how she is.” Allegra smiled. “She draws you in and makes you feel like family.”
“Her parents are the same way.” Allan said. “You can really tell where she gets it from.”
“Where who gets what from?”
Felix, along with the rest of the group, turned to the trapdoor, where Marinette was standing about halfway through. She didn’t have the clothes anymore, but she did have a tray of drinks.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” Allegra said dismissively. “What are those?”
Marinette set the tray on the ground long enough to climb through and close the trapdoor as she explained, “Maman and Papa thought you guys might be thirsty, so she sent me up with a bunch of different drinks to choose from.”
“Sweet!” Claude grinned, swiftly walking over in case she needed help. “Do you have Dr. Pepper?”
Marinette smiled and turned the tray to reveal a deep red can of soda. “Yep! I know it’s your favorite.”
“You truly are a blessing.” Claude replied, grabbing the soda off of the tray.
Marinette giggled and brought the tray forward for the rest of them to pick. Allegra chose a pepsi, while Allan snagged a coke, and Felix grabbed the slim cup of coffee that sat to the side.
He took a sip of it, enjoying the warmth of the bitter liquid. It didn’t escape his notice that Marinette had brought up all of their preferred drinks. She even got his coffee right (Black with three sugars).
Despite how scatter-brained she could be, Marinette still paid attention to details, which was impressive. Felix didn’t know anyone else who could space out during an entire conversation, yet remember the exact type of drink everyone ordered during lunch.
“So what do you guys want to do now? We still have about half an hour before supper is finished.” Marinette asked, setting the tray aside.
Allan shrugged. “What do you have?”
Marinette thought for a moment. “Well, we have board games, card games, Mecha Strike 3-”
“Mecha Strike 3?” Claude perked up. “Yes, please!”
Marinette laughed. “Is everyone else okay with that?”
“Sounds great.” Allan smiled.
Allegra shrugged. “I’m fine with it.”
Felix, being satisfied with his inspection for now, sat down on the chaise. “I’ll watch.”
The rest of the group huddled around Marinette’s computer while she turned it on, and after a bit of debating, they decided on ‘winner faces next player’ and started with Allan and Claude. Felix watched the first two games, just long enough to see Marinette cream Allan, before reverting back to his studious ways. He scanned the bedroom again, hoping to catch something new, when his gaze landed on the trunk that Claude had tipped over earlier. With everyone bustling around it, Felix hadn’t gotten a chance to sift through it, but now that they were occupied with Marinette’s game..
Felix shifted in his seat and re-opened the chest. It was only half full, as opposed to its previously overflowing contents, but that didn’t bother him. There were still plenty of things inside, such as shirts, figurines, hats, and other things. He pulled out a jacket and turned it in his hands, admiring the handiwork. The hood, along with the cuffs of the sleeves and zipper were pitch black, but the rest of the jacket was a deep red, save for the black spots that littered it. “Miraculous” was written on the back in cursive as well. Was this supposed to be based off of the Parisian superhero Ladybug? Why would she want to get rid of this? At the very least, she could make a profit by selling it.
What did she use to make this? The material is so soft.. Felix thought as he unzipped the jacket. It was completely black on the inside, save for some tiny, golden lettering near the section wear the pocket would be.
“To: Adrien
From: Marinette”
Felix frowned. How strange. Why would Marinette be giving away things that she made specifically for someone else? He dug through the chest some more, this time looking for names, and what he found was shocking.
Almost every gift had the name ‘Adrien’ on it somewhere, whether it be a card or stitching or marker. Some gifts didn’t have a name, but at that point, Felix felt it was safe to assume that everything in the chest was supposed to be for this ‘Adrien’ person.
That begged the question, though: Who was Adrien? And why would she create so many gifts for him just to give them away?
A small card stitched on the ear of a stuffed cat gave him his answer.
“Dear Adrien,
Happy 19th birthday! It’s officially been five years since we’ve known each other. Isn’t that crazy? Anyway, I just wanted to say happy birthday (even though I’ve already said it) and that I’m really happy we got to meet. Enjoy the cat!
With all my love, Marinette”
Felix glanced up at Marinette, who was blissfully ignorant of his findings as she defeated Claude for the second time at Mecha Strike 3. Did she intend to use all of these as birthday presents? How many gifts were in there? Did she expect this person to have the same interests twenty years from now? He couldn’t decide if this level of planning was due to over-thinking or just plain obsession. Maybe both.
“Hey, Felix!”
Felix flinched at the sudden call of his name, weirdly feeling as if he’d been caught in the act of some crime. He looked up to see Claude waving a controller at him.
“Are you sure you don’t want to play?” The brunette asked.
“Talk to me when you have chess.” Felix replied shortly, going back to the chest. He had hoped that seeing Marinette’s room would provide more answers to her life, but it only issued more questions. Did she have this amount of gifts for all of her friends or was Adrien special? If he was special, what way would it be? Was he possibly an ex-lover? She dated him for a while, and they had a recent falling out, which was why she was getting rid of the gifts. That would make sense.
“He just wants to talk.”
Her words from last week resurfaced in his mind. The person who chased her that day was the only one she reacted bitterly towards. Was Adrien trying to get back together with her?
Was he the reason she left her old school in the first place?
My, my Dupain-Cheng. Felix thought. Aren’t you just full of secrets?
This isn't mentioned but I'll give a quick backstory for this to make sense.
Marinette moved to an art school, but steal sees her old friends. At her new school, she befriends Allan, Claude, Allegra, and Felix. Marinette is still Ladybug, Adrien is still Chat Noir.
Established Relationship between Felix and Marinette.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Marinette counted the stuffies that lay on the ground.
Twenty-three.
Twenty-four.
Twenty-five.
Twenty-six.
Twenty-six stuffed animals that she had handmade.
For Manon.
The young girl had come over about a week ago. They had played with the Ladybug and Cat Noir stuffies, as per usual. This time, though, Marinette thought it was getting boring for Manon to play with the same stuffies every time, so she decided it was time to make a few new stuffies.
And so, here she was, a week later. She may have gone just a tad overboard.
Okay, maybe just a little more than a tad overboard. Manon wouldn't play with all of them. Maybe five, max.
She could give Manon a few to take home and keep some in her room for when she comes over, but that would still leave a lot.
Oh! I should give some to my friends as a gift! Marinette thought, getting excited. She was meeting up with Adrien, Nino, and Alya that weekend, and she would see Claude, Allegra, Allan and Felix when she went to school.
She observed the stuffies. Which ones should she give? She had a ladybug doll (the insect, not her superhero persona), perfect for Alya. She had a dog and a cat wearing headphones. Allan would love the dog, and Nino would take the cat. An owl for Allegra. A monkey for Claude. She had a smiling sun, which she would give to Adrien.
That left twenty options for Felix.
Marinette's eyes landed on the most recent one she'd made.
A black cat peeking out of a burrito.
Perfect.
Felix had always complained about his bad luck, even after getting rid of his cursed ring. The black cat was perfect.
Or... purrfect.
...Perhaps she had been spending too much time with Cat Noir. His puns were starting to rub off on her.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
The next day, Marinette went to school with the stuffies in her bag. The first few classes went by pretty smoothly, as usual. No akumas, either.
By the time lunch rolled around, Marinette was hyped to give her friends their gifts, but, to her surprise, Felix wasn't there.
Marinette unlocked her phone and, finding three missed messages, opened up their group chat.
Grumpy: I have a pretty bad cold.
Grumpy: I don't think I can make it to school today.
Grumpy: Also, why the hell is this still my nickname.
Marinette pouted. "He's sick." She informed the group.
Allan frowned. "That sucks. Do you think we could drop by after school and visit him?"
"Let's ask." Marinette responded.
Nettie: Can we come over later and keep you company for a while?
There was no response for a few minutes before the three dots finally appeared at the bottom left, signifying that he was typing.
Grumpy: I'd prefer it if you didn't. I don't want to get you all sick.
Nettie: Okay! But we're seeing you the second you feel better <333
Grumpy: Thank you.
"Felix said no. He doesn't want to make us sick." Marinette explained. "Oh, and I have things for you guys!" Marinette opened her bag and started taking out the stuffies.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
(Definitely not skipping a bunch of stuff because just getting up to this point has taken me a ridiculously long amount of time, and I very much do not want to spend a million years on that scene. No way!)
A few days later, while Marinette was working on a sewing commission, she received a notification from her phone. She checked, realizing it was a private message from Felix.
Felix ❤: Hey, I am feeling a lot better. Would you like to meet up somewhere today?
Marinette: Of course! Where do you wanna go?
Felix ❤: How about that cafe near the park?
Marinette: Okay! See you in an hour?
Felix ❤: Okay.
Today was a warm day, so Marinette put on a pink t-shirt and some jeans. She almost left without the stuffy she had made for Felix but managed to remember it right before she left the bakery. This was the perfect opportunity to give it to him.
"Do you think he'll like it?" Marinette asked Tikki.
"You made it! Of course, he'll like it!” Her kwami assured her.
Marinette arrived at the cafe on time for once. Maybe it was because she was excited. Despite her rare punctuality, Felix still came before her.
Felix was sitting at a two-person table next to the window. The blond was dressed in his usual attire: a dress shirt with a vest and dress pants.
 "Felix!"  Marinette greeted him once she reached the table, pulling him into a hug once he got up.
Felix smiled warmly, accepting her embrace.
Marinette gave Felix a quick kiss before sitting down, causing Felix to blush. He still wasn't quite used to physical affection. He sat down as well.
"You seem to be in a good mood." He commented. Watching Marinette's cheery expression warmed his heart.
"I have something for you." She told him, reaching into her purse to take out the stuffy.
Marinette placed it on the table, watching as Felix examined the small object.
"Is that... a cat inside of a... burrito?" He asked incredulously.
"A Purrito." Marinette corrected, giggling a little.
"A what?"
Marinette burst into a fit of laughter. "Purrito." She said again.
Felix pinched the bridge of his nose. "Nettie. This is ridiculous." He said, using the nickname her newer group of friends had assigned her.
"You called me Nettie! You like it!" She accused.
"I do not!" He retorted though the look on his face suggested otherwise.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
About two weeks later, Marinette video called Felix after school. He had answered the call from his desk in his room. In the background, Marinette could see his bed and nightstand. And, more importantly, what was on the nightstand.
"Is that my Purrito?" She asked him.
Felix turned around, his eyes catching the little black cat on his nightstand. His face turned red.
"Uh." He said dumbly, searching his brain for an excuse.
"I knew it! You liked it! You sleep with it next to your bed? Felix, that's adorable."
Felix's cheeks burned a deeper shade of red.
"Admit it, Felix. Please?"
"Alright. Fine. I liked the Purrito thing and was too embarrassed to admit it."
Needless to say, that confession brought a lot of Purrito-themed gifts with it. Larger stuffies, shirts, sweaters, sweatpants. Felix was beginning to think that he would need a second closet solely for all the Purrito clothes he had received. (which he only ever wore to sleep or to sleepovers with Marinette)
Marinette teased him about it relentlessly, which he didn't mind at first, until Claude, Allan, and Allegra joined in on it too.
It wasn't long until his name on the group chat was changed to 'PurritoLover107'.
Felix almost choked when Marinette called him "My Little Purrito."
Eventually, the Purrito jokes died down, along with Marinette's horrendous nickname.
But he still went to sleep in the clothes she has given him, and the little Purrito still sat on his nightstand, watching over him.
Daminette December-- So Close (And Yet So Far), Chapter Seven “Dancer AU”
(The song they're dancing to is 'Teeth' by Five Seconds of Summer. I'd recommend listening to it while reading to get the mood.)
(Also, I really wish I was a professional choreographer or something because I can picture this routine in perfect detail but I am terrier at instructing people and also I can't dance to save my life so for now and forever this masterpiece is stuck in my brain)
———————————————————————————————————–
“Please?” Marinette begged.
“No. Not a chance,” Damian replied.
There was silence for a moment, and Damian almost wondered if Marinette had hung up on him. He would never admit it, but when she spoke again he was a little startled.
“If you don’t help me, I’m destroying the jacket you commissioned me to make,” she told him. Normally, she wouldn’t resort to blackmail, but she was desperate. Her partner was MIA, and nobody else was around to take their place for practice. Felix had a chemistry exam that afternoon, Claude was off campus, Allan was at a track and field meet, and Allegra was working on her own project for the same class.
Damian groaned. “Seriously? All this for one dance?”
“It’s my midterm dance!” she told him. He was sure if she was standing in front of him, her face would be all red and she’d be staring up at him angrily, acting like she was actually intimidating (she was to others, of course, but not to him).
“Fine, fine,” he conceded. “But I’m not going to be happy about it.”
---------
When Damian arrived at the dance studio, Marinette was already at the barre, doing stretches and hyping herself up. The dance was an intricate one that required a lot of energy and confidence, and she needed time to prep.
"You know I'm not familiar with the routine, right?" Damian asked as he entered the studio. Marinette jumped in surprise but was quickly able to steady herself again.
"Don't worry, I learn best by teaching," she told him. "Now come on, we have to stretch." She neck Ned for him to join her at the barre, and for the next twenty minutes they stretched and Marinette once again apologized for the last-minute request.
"If Thomas was able to be here, he would," Marinette told her interim partner. "But to be honest with you, I don't know if he's as invested in the piece as I wish he was. It requires a lot of emotion and storytelling without saying a word. But basically, just so you have an idea, the plot is a fighting couple, where the guy--that's you-- is trying to repair the relationship, while the girl--me-- is not as innocent as she seems and isn't exactly a good influence on her partner. It ends poorly.
And I'm not expecting you to be perfect at it, but I need someone here to work off of, if that makes sense." Damian nodded in understanding before she continued. "Okay, good. You ready?"
"Why not?" Damian asked.
Marinette laughed and grabbed a remote off the ground by her bag in the corner, and the song they were dancing to started playing. She slipped the remote into her pocket for safekeeping.
"I'm just going to show you my part first, then I'll show you yours, then I'll help you when we put them together," she said over the booming music.
/Some days you're the only thing I know/Only thing that's burning when the nights grow cold/Can't look away, can't look away/Beg you to stay, beg you to stay, yeah/
Marinette performed the first few moves with grace and poise. She looked like she'd been dancing her whole life. Her expression changed, and her normal smile was replaced with a calculating smirk as she started to tell her story with the music.
After the first few bars were over, she grabbed the remote and paused the music. "Okay, now here's your part."
She wasn't as proficient with the guy's part as her own, which made sense, but Damian knew that someone who didn't understand dance wouldn't see a single thing wrong with her performance.
"Do you think you can do that?"
"I won't be as good as you, but I can try." He could have sworn he saw a blush on Marinette's face for a minute, but that might've been a trick of the light or from her dancing.
Marinette started the music again and the two danced together this time. Damian had greatly underestimated his own capabilities, it seemed, as he was easily able to recreate and execute Marinette's steps, even adding a little flair of his own in the fly. Marinette was undoubtedly impressed, and in her head she thanked fate for making everyone else unavailable that day so she could dance with Damian.
"Wow, that was fantastic!" she told him. "Ready for the next part?"
"Yes, I think I am."
The music started again from the beginning. Marinette did the first steps again, but this time she kept going and added in the next few steps.
/Sometimes you're a stranger in my bed/Don't know if you love me or you want me dead/Push me away, push me away/Then beg me to stay, beg me to stay, yeah/
They repeated the same routine as before, Marinette beautifully executing the steps she choreographed (Damian was surprised to learn that she made the routine on her own, and that her partner was unable to help her due to what Damian believed was utter incompetence but Marinette called 'personal reasons' and the fact that he had never danced before this class), Damian surprising Marinette with his ability to catch on to and individualize the routine.
It was at the bridge of the song when things changed.
/Blood on my shirt, rose in my hand/You're looking at me like you don't know who I am/Blood on my shirt, heart in my hand, still beating/
"So with this part, you're going to get down on one knee and hold out a rose to me," Marinette said, demonstrating. "Allegra promised that she'll sit in the front so she can throw the rose to Thomas when this part of the song starts because neither of his can hold it during the rest of the song, and then he'll throw it back to him or backwards on the stage, whichever feels right in the moment. That part isn't as relevant. Meanwhile, I'll be doing a pirouette, and when I stop I'll hold my hand out to you. You won't grab it the first time, but you will the second time. So it's," she stopped to demonstrate.
"'Blood on my shirt,'" she said, putting an accent on shirt as she stopped spinning. "You stay on the ground, then for the 'You're looking at me' part, you're going to get up quickly and do this." She demonstrated the action, pretending she was him and he was her. "Then you'll get back on your knee for the second 'Blood' part, and for 'Still beating' You'll grab my hand after the pirouette and I'll pull you up."
/Fight so dirty but your love so sweet/Talk so pretty but your heart got teeth/Late night devil put your hands on me/And never, never, never, ever let go/
"This part is going to be different than before too," she told him. "There's less movement, but there is needs to be sharp and powerful. After 'Beating' we're going to stay in that position until 'Sweet', when we're going to move like this, away from each other," she said. "Then, on 'teeth,' we move again. Then we wait until 'me,' and this is where we come back together," she added, demonstrating the move by putting her hand on his chest and grabbing one of his hands with the other. She stared up into his eyes before asking, "Got it?"
"Yeah," he muttered, staring right back at her for a moment before remembering who he was, who she was, what they were doing, where he was. "Uh, yes. Yes, I've got it," he stammered, acting very unlike himself. "Got it down. What's next?"
Marinette gave him a playful and reassuring smile. "Then we do the chorus moves again, but we end with me letting go of your hand and turning away while you falling to the ground in despair. It's super depressing, I know, but I felt that it was the best ending for the story."
"I agree," Damian said. "Maybe we should just start again from the top if the rest is all the same as we've done before?"
"Sounds good to me!" Marinette said, and the music began from the beginning.
BONUS:
The duo was unstoppable. If anyone had walked in during this run of the routine, they would have undoubtedly assumed at least one, if not all, of the following things:
1) Damian and Marinette were both professional dancers. No doubt about it.
2) They had fantastic chemistry.
3) They were dating. Or at least hopelessly and secretly in love with each other.
4) Whatever they were dancing for, they would blow everyone else out of the water.
All of those things were correct. Or at least, they soon would be.
———————————————————————————————————–
And it’s back! Chapter seven, after all this time!
tag gameeeeeee
tagged by @strohller27 !!!!!!!! Thanks George~
this is a somewhat long tag game, and I have no self control about how much I talk about myself so I'm gonna put it under the cut :)
1. why did you choose your url?
I’m a mathgeek! that's it! Starting in elementary school I went to the junior high school for math classes in the morning, and then at the end of junior high I went to the high school for my math classes again, and was always in math with the grade older than me. I took AP Calc as a junior and got a 5 on the AP test, so it kinda fits I guess. I actually made the moniker for my first email account when I was 13 so I could make a facebook account.
2. any side blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.
LMAO I LITERALLY HAVE 4. Anyway first I have two writing blogs: @i-am-rmt for poetry, and @iamrmt for prose. They act as catalogues of my writing! The prose one is basically inactive, but seeing as it’s simply a catalogue I’m not gonna delete it. Then there is @yiling-who my side blog for The Untamed - yeah that Chinese drama that took tumblr by storm. Big thanks to @hoebutnotreally for convincing me to watch it! Lastly is my side blog for DKB @dkbtho . DKB is a rookie kpop group that I’m currently obsessed with! They’re so cute and they self produce and also do all their own choreography and are such skilled individuals and also are so funny
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
This year on November 23rd will be the 10 year birthday of mathgeek101!
4. do you have a queue tag?
“qute” it’s on sooo many of my posts because I almost exclusively post from my queue..
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?
both my sisters had tumblrs, and I guess I just thought “neat, I’ll make one too.” I remember sitting on the couch during thanksgiving break while my family was watching Harry Potter (the seventh movie maybe?) and designing my blog
6. why did you choose your icon?
oh it’s me! My icon has always been me, because this blog is just a messy collection of my interests. My friend (@hoebutnotreally) did my makeup and hair and we took pictures (I posted some here too!)
7. why did you choose your header?
oh it’s me again! I took that picture on a whim with a silly snapchat filter and I thought it turned out neat, so I hid my icon on mobile and I think my blog looks pretty neat that way.
8. what’s your post with the most notes?
9. how many mutuals do you have?
I think it’s my Mushu Zuko post still... I know there’s a way to check, but I’ll just go with that post for now.
OKAY so I’m back after checking and actually it’s my post about reading Call Me, Beep Me - THE klance voltron fic
idk man is there a way to check that, too? I don’t really interact with my mutuals, and I don’t really get the huge hype around them? like, yeah, I appreciate my mutuals, and I love seeing your posts (oh my friend made a post!). I wouldn’t mind interacting with them more, I’m just awkward and suck at talking to people - even people I know in real life and have to make plans with. But all in all, if a mutual unfollows me, I’m not gonna have a meltdown or anything
10. how many followers do you have?
429! I love you guys! When I post about my followers I always tag it with “i love you guys”
11. how many people do you follow?
I’m following 147 blogs.
12. have you ever made a shitpost?
does the Mushu and Zuko post count? Does “hockey is one letter away from hickey” count? I also made a post about Poe Dameron vs Edgar Allan Poe and Po from Kung Fu Panda... you decide. I tag all my original posts with “mine”
13. how often do you use tumblr each day?
too much! jk I’m on it very frequently, but lately I’ve been watching youtube videos over scrolling on tumblr
14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? who won?
nah. Once I did have someone reply to a post I made somewhat rudely, and I replied to them and they didn’t say anything, so if that counts, then I WON.
15. how do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?
eh, they’re pretty dumb, and I’m pretty neutral about them, but I also understand that it’s problematic.
16. do you like tag games?
yes! I really enjoy talking about myself I guess! Wow! Most people honestly do love talking about themselves, and it’s even easier when it’s online and I don’t have to deal with people’s real time reactions :)
17. do you like ask games?
LOVE them. sometimes I wish I was a famous blogger so people would ask me stuff from ask games, but I also don’t reblog them that often.
18. which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
ohhhh uhhhhhhh,,,,,,,, idk man
19. do you have a crush on a mutual?
nah, I don’t interact with them enough for that
20. tagging
uhhh if you’ve made it this far and you want to do it consider yourself tagged :)
TV | Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)
This review has sat in my drafts for over a year. (It’s been a weird year, don’t judge me). Although I had a few notes sufficient enough to write a review from and could have probably have finished and posted something by now, I will honestly say that I have pondered Penny Dreadful this entire period of time. Even as I watch other series and take part in other media, every so often my mind wanders back to Penny Dreadful. Whether the show intrigued me or irked me has not entirely been decided, to the point where I am almost feel hastened to watch the show again with more attentiveness. But, just as I feel about Marvel’s Iron Fist series, I’m not sure I want to endure some of the more vexing qualities of Penny Dreadful a second time around (though I sadly will for Iron Fist as I once again attempt to complete the entire Defenders collection).
Let’s see what I can make of my long-stored memories.
Penny Dreadful derives its name from what is essentially Victorian England’s version of a comic book, typically with narratives of crime or violence. As per Britannica, these eight-page installments – also called “dime novels” or “bloods” – were carelessly written second-rate works full of gory themes. While I wouldn’t say the series to be careless or second-rate, it definitely hits the crime, violence, and horror right on the nose to give its namesake proper honor.
Set in the late 1800s, Penny Dreadful bears resemblance to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in that it includes characters from various works of classic literature, though Penny Dreadful sticks to the obvious era of Victorian Gothic. Although its main characters Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) were created for the show, its supporting cast are directly named after major literary characters – Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) and his Creature (Rory Kinnear), as well as brief appearances throughout by Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. Henry Jekyll (sadly, while the science is included, Jekyll’s own counterpart Hyde was not), Dracula, and Justine (from The Misfortunes of Virtue). It has been discussed online that the character of Malcolm is based on famed adventurer Allan Quartermain from King Solomon’s Mines and, by name, obviously a derivative of Mina Murray’s father from Dracula; however, he was not mentioned in the novel. Similarly, Vanessa Ives is said to be based on Mina’s best friend Lucy Westenra. Furthermore, the story arc of Brona, who then becomes “Lily Frankenstein,” shares obvious similarities to that of the Bride of Frankenstein.
Tumblr media
The rich inspiration from classic literature is what initially drew me to watch Penny Dreadful, along with the hype I read when it was initially released in 2014. Despite the fact that I am typically not one for horror-based film or television, I undertook the task regardless. Per my usual reasoning (I swear I write this in everything and I apologize lol), I wanted to discover for myself if it was truly as great as the critics say. And dare I say, it was actually true for the first season. I remember posting something on Instagram stating how I understood the public interest in the show and that I was excited to continue on. While it has no doubt been some time since I’ve viewed the material, I distinctly remember my personal fascination dwindle shortly thereafter. Had I any sort of ability to abandon the media I try to consume, it might have caused me to not finish the show. But alas, I’m one of those hopefuls that thinks maybe it will get better. Plus, can you really say you watched something if you didn’t watch the entire thing? My answer: no. Must watch it all to have a proper opinion!
Wherein the first season focuses primarily on finding a kidnapped Mina Murray, with tolerable amounts of arc for Frankenstein, his creature, the mysterious Ethan Chandler, and Dorian Gray...  the latter seasons revolving around witches and “nightcomers” (season two), and Dracula (season three) – as well as the constant battles between Frankenstein’s scientist vs. his creations, the dragged out uncovering of Ethan’s background, and Dorian’s inability to keep it in his pants – just didn’t seem to have the same charm to me as the initial season. Maybe it was the story? Were these the best “big bads” writers could come up with? I suppose, yes, considering the source material of that particular period, there’s only so much to work with. But to have the first season’s enemy be simply a vampire and the third season’s Dracula, it seems to me like missed opportunity (like using Dracula in his actual storyline) or they were really just recycling material. You used vampires once already; was doing it again with one buffer season in between really your only option?
Other nagging details that truthfully somewhat prevent me from watching the series again include things like: how much of Vanessa’s “dialogue” actually includes Eva Green’s ability to make guttural sounds; how certain arcs overwhelmed the series (like Frankenstein’s Creature and Lily, though kudos to Penny Dreadful for exploring their thoughts/feelings that other films or shows have not), compared to others tales that were not fleshed out enough; characters from literature left me wanting more, even if I did already know their mythos (Dorian, for example, was merely only a brief glimpse at his portrait, no explanation of its mysticism); and lastly, Lily’s entire story felt too much for me. While I admire the show’s portrayal of feminism, body autonomy, and a sense of sisterhood amongst Lily and her “army,” her approach to these topics also felt preachy and eventually fell more into a “savior” complex. I can understand the rediscovery of life as a newly reanimated human, re-comprehending life and death, not allowing any man to “own” her purely based on his say-so... but the way the show writers approached it was not my favorite. Billie Piper was great in her role, but towards the end of her arc, I was bored with Lily’s endeavors.
Tumblr media
My biggest pet peeve surrounding this show, however, was actual a very random detail – Ethan and Brona (Lily, in her previous life) had a very intense relationship during the first season before she succumbs to illness. How is it, despite both of their prominence in the show and their respective arcs, as well as mutual acquaintances with other characters, that Ethan never ever crossed paths with Lily at all once she was reborn? Was it because he would obviously recognize her as Brona and writers didn’t know how to incorporate that detail into the show? Was it because they wanted Lily to remain purely a character in Frankenstein’s and Dorian’s arcs? Someone please answer this for me, because it drives me nuts.
All in all, Penny Dreadful started strong and I did enjoy it at first, but its subsequent seasons and finale felt less than spectacular. What was once an enjoyable suspenseful thriller turned into a psychological drama looking to interpret everyone’s personal issues and traumas rather than working together for a common, supernatural cause. Where the first season saw everyone as a collective group, I feel the show slowly but surely lost its charm by increasing their solo arcs without much interaction amongst everyone as a whole. It’s not to say that they never spoke to one another (Ethan and Lily being the exception), but their interactivity became increasingly minimal. I will give writers some credit in that, for some characters, this solitude reflected their emotions and was necessary for their arc. But maybe I just believe the show was better when the ensemble was a more cohesive whole.
So... In light of the current Situation I‘ve been thinking of Edgar Allan Poe‘s the mask of the red death... that mixed in with my Rwby hype and
Well....
I thought about a new Rwby AU... It‘s similar to the reverse AU but with a bit different rules. For one the characters are now based on different stories and their semblances have challenged.
Tumblr media
So Ruby Rose... as a Villain... based on the red death... where to begin?
Maybe the semblance... fittingly called Red Death, it’s a red mist she emanates( See the first picture) , that slowly eats her enemys Aura away... now how fast it does that depends on how much they breath in, how long they stay in the mist and how much aura they had to begin with, but it doesn’t eat more than a forth in about an hour.
Her fighting style will be changed by that, she‘ll lurks more, stalks her victims while they unknowingly weaken. A heavier focus on sniping and hiding in the mist. It would be terrifying not seeing anything though the mist, while feeling yourself getting weaker and just waiting for the attack you know is coming.
Tumblr media
For her design I went with her striking red cloak and the name giving mask of the story as focal points of the design. The Grimm look came more, cause my first idea of a striking green mask failed to give me proper Rwby vibes.. so I made the mask white with red accents and that gave me Grimm vibes...so I made the rest of the outfit accordingly.
Tumblr media
Now behind the mask I wanted he to look like her semblance has been feeding on her too
Her Emblem changed as well... I think the skull is kinda obvious but the clock theme is a reference to the clock in the original story. And is is more visible in her weapon.
Tumblr media
It‘s basically the same, but with a slight color change and.. well I think I went a bit overboard with the clock... but hey it is visible... so yay?
And that‘s villainous Ruby... if I have enough time and motivation I‘ll make the rest of team Rwby too....
I also have clear ideas for everyone but yang... wich sucks since she is my favourite... but I’m working on it...
Anyway, thanks for reading!
1-30 for the nonamerican asks
1. favourite place in your country?
My home - Northern Jutland - beautiful nature and oceans on all sides.
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
Well, as I live abroad, I spend a lot of holidays going back home to Denmark. But I do love to travel as well!
3. does your country have access to sea?
Hah, yeah - Denmark has oceans on both sides and we have easy access as we’re a teeny tiny country of little islands with Fjords running in between.
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
Ohhhh... I’m going to do a meal and a dessert
Main meal: Frikadeller (danish meatballs) with red cabbage and rye bread
Dessert: real Danish pastries - we do an amazing cinnamon swirl!!!
Also check out PROPER danish Rye bread. IT will change your LIFE!
5. favourite song in your native language?
ohhhh... “Han har tænkt” by Allan Olsen. Incredible lyrics describing my home and amazing music as well...
6. most hated song in your native language?
HAh I don’t even know. Some of the new stuff which is just stupid and misogynistic
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
HAHA okay. so. I'm gonna do the three words that all non-native speakers are challenged to say heh
“Rødgrød med fløde”
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom?
Language wise people ask if I'm from Sweden, Norway or for some unfathomable reason Holland (The Netherlands)
Also “Is Denmark the capital of Scandinavia?” is a classic?
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
Germany is the only country that we neighbour physically but we’ve got Sweden and Norway just across the ocean. I love all three countries to be honest. We used to take day trips to Sweden when I was younger - the Danish Krone is a lot stronger than the Swedish so we saved a lot of money. I've been to all three a bunch of times but still have a lot to discover and explore!!!
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
Well. Bae is actually danish for poo. I know it's not a swear word but it's hilarious. You're calling your s/o a poo ;)
11. favourite native writer/poet?
H. C. Andersen
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
Ohhh. Well H. C. Andersen was Danish and I think the translations are fairly successful.
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
oh I guess we do? First of all, we do Christmas on Christmas Eve 24/12.
We also have a “Confirmation” when we're 14 which is technically a confirmation of our Christian Fatih but now it's just an excuse for friends and family to give you money and presents.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?
Honestly, I think Danish tv is sometimes a bit cringey to listen to. Hah, I love my country and we have some hilarious films and tv shows but I honestly don’t get the whole hype of danish tv shows like the killing or Borgen
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
“Rosinen i pølseenden”
translation: “the raisin at the end of the sausage” - or being the very last one in whatever situation you're in
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with?
that vikings had horns on their helmets. That's all Hollywood. Also Vikings might have been a bit barbaric but they were also ahead of their time with a lot of societal issues such as equality, cleanliness and other stuff - also we were hella good sailors and boat builders. We went to Canada and North America WAAAYYYYY before Columbus and the other guys
17. are you interested in your country’s history?
Very much. My mom and dad are both really interested in history - my mom is a part time historian and my dad, while not formally educated in history, writes historical books in his spare time.
We are very interesting in history in general and love to learn more and I've definitely inherited that curiosity.
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language?
YES. hahahaha. I'm from the very north of Denmark and thus I’ve got a very “flat” northern accent heh.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
I like the red and white flag. and our lion (the royal crest I believe). It’s very pretty. And yes I do enjoy the Danish national anthem.
fun fact: in 2009, Alberto Contador won the Tour de France but they accidentally played the Danish national anthem instead of the Spanish.
20. which sport is The Sport in your country?
MENS soccer. zzzzz. even though we’re not very good. The women are much better and we’ve got so many other cool sports where we are so much better - yet football is where the money goes :(
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
A lego set (YES IT IS DANISH) and one of the royal sausage dogs probably.
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?
we're small but we’re still doing really well
Ashamed: how we treated (treat) our former colonies (Greenland and the Faroe Islands) it's awful, exploitative and we still haven't seen a lot of apologies there.
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country?
SNAPS. HAHA. and of course Beer (Carlsberg)
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
Sweden. Germany or even the US. heh.
Scandinavian countries love to hate on each other - but if anyone else comes for one of us - be certain that the other two will come to defend.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country?
I don't think so. Honestly. I've gotten a lot of opportunities and security by being a Danish citizen and you don't find that in a lot of other countries.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?
Yes it does. I think it's mostly favourable? however, I will say: The utopia that Denmark is the proof that socialism works is wrong: we have our own issues people. Don't fall for it.
27. favourite national celebrity?
The Queen. What a lady!!!!
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?
Hehe. We have some lakes. but no mountains or rivers. We have some gorgeous nature though - but we’re small, flat and green.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
oh yeah so I'm the furthest away from Copenhagen so there's always the Capital vs rest of the country... Copenhagen sucks anyways, it's basically a Swedish province ;)
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
Well, my family is partly Faroese, we've got some English aunties and my pony is German. heh
Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! I wanna know about some of your worldbuilding inspirations: what did you like to read as a kid? What first inspired you to start worldbuilding? What are some of the first ideas you remember playing with?
Happy late late late late late late WBW!!! (I know, because I have seven asks from you for the past seven weeks, even if I haven’t answered the earliest one yet haha) Sorry in advance for the notifications you’re about to get from me, as I’m working on clearing all these out now!
I really liked to read fantasy as a kid - the Dragon Slippers series by Jessica Day George was (and still is lbr) my absolute favorite series as a kid, and was her book Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. I read the latter so many times in a row in fifth grade that my teacher actually asked to borrow it from me to figure out the hype lmao. I was also big into Gail Carson Levine, especially her book Fairest.
As for what first inspired me to worldbuild: One of my very first longer, more ambitious books was called Winged (pronounced wing-ned for some reason) and it was born after I read a bunch of portal fantasy LOTR fanfiction, as I was going through my LOTR phase. It detailed two girls who fell through a portal during a forest fire and discovered a world that very much resembled Middle Earth (but it allegedly wasn’t) and had to figure out how to survive long enough to get home. And then it was discovered that they had fairy blood, which was interesting because fairies had gone extinct centuries ago. Which, as I’m writing this, has clear inspiration from The Fairie Path by Allan Frewin Jones. Huh. Anyways, basically, I used Middle Earth worldbuilding (but, like, a very shallow understanding of Middle Earth worldbuilding) as my bones so that I could focus on developing the fairies and their magic and stuff.
(Note: I am clearing out my old wbw asks this week. If you send in a question now, I may answer it but I will not be sending one in return. Next week will be better for that.)
I was tagged by @cupcakecurl a while back (thank you!) and finally I’m on the mood for doing this myself as well!
Rules: tag 9 people you’d like to get to know better!
Top 3 current ships: I actually have just one OTP, which is Bela/Farin (aka FUB) from Die Ärzte, and then multiple smaller ones here and there. I’m finding new ships way too easily and sometimes it bugs me because I meant to enjoy a thing and boom, suddenly I have a ship there to fuck up with my brain. B/F is pretty much the only ship that I can say to actually ship, the rest are more like just for fun, I enjoy seeing stuff but I don’t really do anything about it, you know?
But now as I think of it, I think of it, I could say another band ship here: Paulchard aka Paul Landers and Richard Z. Kruspe from Rammstein, about these I have also watched videos and read some fancomics too and last summer’s tour was a wild one and I was following the events quite a lot.
And then maybe I could throw one fictional ship here too as it’s pretty much current one since I just finished watching the 5th season of Gotham last week, and that is, of course Nygmobblepot aka Penguin/The Riddler aka Oswald Cobblepot/Edward Nygma. I’ve never in my life shipped these before, even tho I’ve been a Batman fan since 1999 (I was 8) as I saw the 60s series on TV and I can remember almost shipping Batman and Robin back then, and I was only 8 years old!, and then had been watching the movies more or less during my childhood, but this was never something I’d even think of before I started watching Gotham and things started happening in the show. But it’s an interesting one. And I have to admit that while the show was still running and I couldn’t watch it because I live in Europe (and was too lazy to look for a website to watch it :D), I was still browsing the tag on Tumblr after each episode and giving myself spoilers of what happens with them. But I think the ending was a lot different than what I thought based on the Tumblr posts, and I’m actually not sure what to think of it. Imho it was not as bad as everyone else seemed to think.
I’m putting this under a read more link as this is getting way too long and I don’t know if people are interested in reading my weird thoughts about ships and other random stuff, so here you go...
Top 3 all-time ships:  Oh my gosh, I have had so many but only like 2 actually strong ones? And I have to say Bela/Farin here as well, the reasons are found from above and I’m just so obsessed with them and idc what it is, already the friendship is like friendhip goals, you know? But yeah, I’ve been making videos about these two idiots for like last 10 years so... :D
And the next one, okay I’m usually not so talkative about ships. I can talk about them with people in private but I don’t like to go and shout about them publicly, probably the only one I talk about this way is Bela/Farin but it’s because Tumblr is a safe place for this and there’s no hate with this ship or anything (and the other one is Paulchard, every now and then I will reblog something that crosses my dash). But mainly I like to keep ships to myself and like I said in that other tag game post, ships are more like a guilty pleasure. Maybe because of my age as it was very normal at the age of 15 but now as I’m 28? Why am I still “in love with other people’s love”? I actually don’t mind it but I think many people would find it weird, especially when I don’t read fanfictions anymore and I don’t want to imagine anything, I just like seeing cute stuff, but with many ships I don’t even want to see too much, I just like seeing them being close but with many ships even seeing them kiss would be too much.
But anyway, top 3 all-time ships... I think I need to mention here a ship that I was very much obsessed when I was 15-17, that I wrote LOTS OF fanfiction and was there to make lots of fan theories and all, and that one was Frerard aka Gerard Way/Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance. I was SO obsessed it’s insane. If you know anything about MCR and Frerard, you maybe are aware of how was the year 2007 and you can probably imagine how crazy we all went when Project Revolution stuff happened. So yeah, I need to mantion that here even tho I no longer “believe in this ship”, but I guess I’d lie if I said, that I didn’t believe that there was something there back in the day. I’ve actually recently been watching some Frerard theory videos just for fun, because there’s so many things I had forgotten and so many things I still can remember, but also lots of stuff that I kinda missed because they happened in 2010-2012, and even tho I was still very much in the fandom and I was to their second gig in Finland in 2011, I still was not that much into the Danger Days album so I was not so into digging up stuff either. And I had my own identity crisis and Die Ärzte had been my favorite band for 1-2 years at that time so I was spending lots of time watching DÄ videos, so MCR was kinda at the background. And then the whole band went quiet for some time until they quit in 2013 (and now they’re back), so all that Frerard hype kinda died after each of them started to get married to other people and the kids were born, so there just... kinda was no more room for the ship, you know? But Freard was my first actual huge slash ship, I’ve had others before it (for example, my first touch to slash fiction was Harry Potter fanfiction and of course Harry/Draco stuff, but that one also later died out), but it was the first really strong one and then Bela/Farin kinda took its place as Frerard died out but B/F has been going strong and the ship has been sailing itself since the 80s, so... :D
And as the last one I think I could again mention something fictional but at the same time something that is super weird for me as it’s not slash fiction but hetship, which is something REALLY weird for me. I usually don’t like heteroships as they’re just... boring and so cliché. But I need to mention this one that I got into when I was 15: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from The X-Files. Yeah I know it was 2006 and the series had ended already in 2002, but I was a new fan! I had known about the series since I was a little kid as my dad was watching it back then, but I started watching it myself when the show had a rerun here in 2004-2005. And then I met my friend in 2006 when we were 15 and we found out that we both were very much into TXF and I remember how we somehow both started to ship Mulder and Scully (having no idea of how the series ended), and it was probably until the 6th season (there was 9 seasons at the time) when they stopped airing it altogether, so we were so furious about the fact because the last episode was such a cliffhanger and we NEEDED TO KNOW, so I had to buy them on dvd! So I remember how we would meet at school every day and after every episode, we went so crazy, discussing what had happened in the episode and if there was any Mulder/Scully activity, we were just so hyped :D And then, as we STILL hadn’t seen all the seasons, we went to see the second movie (”TXF: I want to believe”) in theaters in 2008 or so, and it’s set to happen after the events of the seasons, we were both so blown away by what was in the movie because we had no clue :D Fun fact: I actually finished watching the 9th season only last year. So now I understand the events of the second movie a lot better, and I’ve also seen the 10th and 11th seasons so now I’m finally aware of everything. But that really is a hetship that I accept and that is not like a typical movie romance type of ship. It has interesting dynamics.
---
Last song: Tatuoituna by Tehosekoitin
Lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick, I don’t use any make-up, but chapstick I need to use daily.
Last movie: Iron Sky. I’ve seen it before tho, but we’re gonna watch the sequel soon, so we had to watch this to remember what happened :D (And it’s made partially by Finns, so..!)
Reading: Atm I have 3 books I’m reading, all of them in Finnish:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which has all the short stories in one. But I think there’s some of the newer ones missing and that’s why I bought this bit newer book with more stories, and I’m gonna read those once I’m finished with this one. And I’ve been reading this now for years lol... but I’m slowly getting there, I’m already over halfway through :D
A collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, I don’t know the name for this book and it doesn’t say any name for the original. This one I also started to read a years back, only to pause if for years and then last year I borrowed it again from my dad and tried to continue from where I was left the last time.
The Heroes of Olympus: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. I’ve been reading his books ever since I was a, well, teenager probably, and I have had a long pause with these books and reading overall, but now I’m back at it and trying to buy and read all of his books I still haven’t read.
I wanted to read the latter only after finishing with SH and Poe’s stories but I needed to read something and they’re bit too difficult reading at the times, and I needed something lighter but also didn’t want to start over with Harry Potter for the 5th time so I decided to go for this series instead. I really like reading SH and Poe’s stories, but like I said, they’re bit difficult at the times. You can’t just read them, you need to think and use your brains meanwhile you’re reading, and sometimes it’s just so incredibly hard to stay focused on it and I need to go back so often because I wasn’t paying attention and then had no clue what was happening and why.
And I sometimes I skip some of Poe’s stories because they’re so purely scientific about a topic that I cannot comprehend nor care about, e.g. this one story that was almost like a science essay about hot-air balloon flight in the form of a story, probably super interesting for someone who likes this kind of stuff and even more interesting for a writer interested in stuff like that, but I’m really not the target audience of that story :D But then there’s also lots of really interesting ones, I especially like the ones that have something to do with insanity. I guess people would call them as the horror stories, but idk, I just love that kind of mystery. For some reason all of my favorite stories are those where there is a dead woman/love interest :DD But probably my ultimate favorite is the one about writing an article to a magazine with horror stories, and how this guy become beheaded and all just to write a story about how it feels like and stays alive meanwhile, and I just LOVE IT when fictional works play with death and when something that is supposed to kill you, doesn’t, and I just love the idea of that story so much :D It’s just that you never know how a story will be like, as you start reading, is it a scientific essay or a mystery or a horror story or about insanity or what is it? And then when in the middle of reading and you realize this is bit boring or uninteresting, but still want to finish, but also want to skip, and that’s why I get stuck with that book, and I change to SH or something else. Often I also grab some of the comics (or non-fiction books) I own whenever I feel like reading but these books feel too heavy for that moment.
---
I should tag 9 people but I don’t even know that many people to tag lol. Okay I do know people, but I still don’t know who wants to be tagged and who doesn’t. Maybe I’ll be boring and tag @stufenlosregelbar again? :D And idk, maybe @annika-of-the-lost? Eh, I’m so bad at this whole tagging thing. I’m having a bad conscience if I don’t tag anyone/enough people in case they want to be tagged and I can’t read minds; and then I’m having bad conscience when I DO tag people in case they’re all somewhere facepalming and screaming “WHYYYYYY” into the void, as I still can’t read minds. So you can choose, do this tag game or ignore it and ban me from ever tagging you people again, I don’t mind :p
Journal Entry 7
(This entry is connected to New Girl on the Block Ch. 12. Enjoy!)
Entry 1 / Entry 6
Thursday, January 31st
Today was admittedly taxing. I experienced my first akuma attack in person, and nothing I write here will describe how truly horrifying it was. Everyone was screaming and running away, while the rest of us were trying to scramble for a hiding place ourselves. The paralyzing fear that washes over you when faced with a foreign power that could squash you like a bug was something I never want to feel again, and the attack only worsened when Marinette started fighting the akuma herself. Yes, let that sink in. Marinette ran off, by herself, without powers of her own, to face a deadly being who could kill her in an instant if it so desired. I might have been impressed had I not been utterly terrified of what might happen to her! She even got kidnapped by the thing! I won’t go into too much detail, since I’ve already talked and thought about it enough, but she’s alright now, though that didn’t stop me from suffering multiple heart attacks. What if she does it again? I can’t imagine it working out again the way it did today. I talked with Mother and Father about it, which helped, but I swear that woman’s going to be the death of me.
I’m going to sleep. Hopefully, the scattered bits of my sanity will return to me by morning.
-
Dear Diary,
You won’t believe what happened today! Not only did we have another akuma attack, the person that got akumatized attacked the café that all of us went to for lunch! We got caught right in the middle, and it was so frustrating! I tried to keep Felix and the others safe as much as possible, but in the end, I had to face the akuma head on in civilian form. Then, to top it off, the akuma kidnapped me right after! The whole ordeal was too close for comfort, especially when I got dropped out of the sky a few minutes later. Isn’t that crazy?! Thankfully, Chat Noir was there to catch me, so I didn’t have to transform in front of everyone, but I need to try to be more careful next time. If not for my sake, then for Felix’s. He wasn’t happy when I got back to the café. He actually came looking for me during the akuma attack! It was super sweet, but he was also really worried, so I feel guilty about it. Allegra, Allan, and Claude were worried for me too. Claude even cried when I got back. (Which I also feel extremely guilty for!) There’s nothing I can do about it now, but I’ll try to be better about getting involved as a civilian next time. Though I really hope there isn’t a next time.
On the bright side, Claude’s fabrics finally came in today!! They’re all so pretty, and I’m dying to try every single one of them, it’s so hard to choose! Also, Allegra told me today that she would be having a sleepover at her house on the eighth of February- next week!! - and I’m really hyped about that too. I can’t wait to see what her house looks like! I heard they all live in mansions, which is crazy. I wonder what kind of mansion it will be? Will it be like Adrien’s? Or like one of those fancy houses that they call mansions, but really aren’t ones? I’ll write you when I find out! For now, though, I’m gonna go work on making Claude’s suit with all of my brand new fabrics! Woohoo!!
My Brief Thoughts on the 27 Books I Read This Summer
I love reading and I love talking about books and I’d love to give any of y’all some reading recommendations if you’re looking for them, so, here we go!
The Wings of the Dove, Henry James. I actually started this in January, but then Life Happened, so I only finished it in June. I really sped-read this one towards the end. Kind of took twice as many words needed to convey what was conveyed. Kind of had that sexist-ly written, male fantasy, early twentieth century woman element to it (this woman isn’t like other woman in that she is SMART! yeah.). The story was fine, but not my favourite.
King’s Cage, Victoria Aveyard. This is the third book in the series and it was MUCH better than book 2. The problem I have with this series is that I find the main character and her love interest boring af, so I’m not really interested in their story, but that’s just a personal preference thing. I loved some side characters and the villain.
War Storm, Victoria Aveyard. The last book in the series. Very long. Big book. Anti-climatic. My favourite character was done dirty. I was over it. Why were there two characters called Cameron and Carmadon? It was an enjoyable read, if the ending was a bit eh. At least [SPOILER ALERT] the lesbians got a happy ending.
Crooked House, Agatha Christie. This one was fun. Classic Christie, bunch of people in a house, someone dies, someone in the house did it, let’s figure it out, detectives! Interesting ending, something I hadn’t seen from it before and it was refreshing to read a standalone novel of hers (as much as I love Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple).
A Pocket Full of Rye, Agatha Christie. My girl Agatha! Another fun mystery. Old dude dies: was it his sons? His young wife? His young secretary? Wtf knows! Let’s go, detectives!
Venetia, Georgette Heyer. Pretty enjoyable, good humor, likeable heroine. My only problem with this book was that the hero was an asshole and basically assaulted the heroine upon meeting and it was painted as attractive because it was the 1920s or whatever, so yeah. I didn’t like him. Kind of spoiled the rest of the really good book.
The Jane Austen Project, Kathleen A. Flynn. SUPER good, so intriguing, oh my gosh. The synopsis basically is these two people from the future go back in time to find a missing book by Jane Austen and try to stop her from dying. Had me getting confused about the logistics of time travel for a week. Awesome!
Heartless, Marissa Meyer. This was also great. It’s an origin story for the Queen of Hearts and I LOVE how the author incorporated characters and concepts from Alice in Wonderland while also making it a fresh story. Definitely recommend if you’re into fairytales and classics.
Tarzan of the Apes, Edgar Rice Burroughs. Very exciting. A real page-turner, if sexist and racist and uneducated about everything.
The Glass Spare, Lauren DeStefano. THIS. THIS book deserves more hype. I really enjoyed it. It’s about this princess who discovers she has the ability to create gemstones. It was original, I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next in the best way, there was an actually interesting male love interest and it had a wlw relationship. Check it out, do yourself a favor.
The Cursed Sea, Lauren DeStefano. The sequel to the above. Even better than the former, had all the qualities I mentioned above and more. Although there was not one cursed sea in this book and to this day I am still confused about that.
The Mystery of Three Quarters, Sophie Hannah. It was a very interesting murder mystery, in the format was a bit different than what I was used to. Four people were sent letters accusing them of murdering a bloke who died a few months back. Was invested and trying to figure out the mystery the whole way through, so I got my money’s worth in that respect. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but it was a fun read.
Tale As Old As Time. A HUGE book all about the history of Beauty and the Beast. I love that story so much, I was almost crying at times while reading this book, I was so overcome with love. Definitely check it out if you love BATB.
The Life of Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell. I’ve loved the Brontes’ books for years and this book reminded me of that love. Such a vivid picture of her life. Charlotte Bronte was pre-teen-me’s idol.
Victoria, Daisy Goodwin. This was a historical novel about the first year of Queen Victoria of England’s reign. SO interesting, I was so invested and annoyed when it ended. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
Armadale, Wilkie Collins. The gay vibes were strong with this book. I don’t care what anyone says, Ozias and Allan are in love with each other, it’s canon. We got crazy family history and drama here, superstition, mistaken identity, scheming women and an all-round good time. 800 pages of it.
Elizabeth of York, Alison Weir. This is a biography of, um, Elizabeth of York, Queen of England, mother of Henry VIII. I love the British monarchy. They are such a dramatic bunch in pretty gowns. Super interesting book. Very well-written.
The Big Four, Agatha Christie. This was a very different Christie. There were these crime lords all over the word trying to kill Poirot and Hastings. Very fast-paced and exciting, bunch of racist undertones. Reading Christie is like talking to your grandparents. It’s all fun until they throw some random racist comment out there and it sucks.
The Clockmaker’s Daughter, Kate Morton. Everyone go read all of Kate Morton’s books, thank me later. This was excellent as usual.
Jane and the Wandering Eye, Stephanie Barron. This is the third in a series that re-imagines Jane Austen as a detective. I love them, lots of fun.
My Own Book. This is the short story/poetry collection my little story got published in! There were some pretty amazing pieces in here (alongside mine ahahaha). Pretty cool to have my own writing on my bookshelf. Excuse me while I cry.
The Mystery of the Blue Train, Agatha Christie. Jewels. Woman murdered on train. Did someone on the train do it? Did someone go on and off the train to do it? Were they disguised as someone else? Was the murdered woman really the murdered woman? Was it her husband? Her boyfriend? Snow. France. Millionaires. Fun time.
Three Dark Crowns, Kendare Blake. The first in a new series. It’s about these three triplets and one of them kills the other two to be queen. I LOVE the characters in this series. For different reasons too. Great cliff-hanger ending. I love it.
One Dark Throne, Kendare Blake. The second in the series. Continues to be good. We have to stan.
Two Dark Reigns, Kendare Blake. Third in series. Still good, but a little anti-climatic in that a spat of bad weather made everyone decide to cancel the big, climatic battle. There’s one book left in the series I haven’t got yet AND I WANT TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS.
Regina Rising, Wendy Tolliver. A prequel-esque story about the Evil Queen from the Once Upon a Time TV series. Interesting, but not revolutionary.
Partners in Crime, Agatha Christie. This one was so FUNNY. I love Tommy and Tuppence, I wish she wrote more books with them. It was so hilarious. They set up this agency where they guarantee to solve any crime in 24 hours. So good.
“It’s not that bad and YET” UFC Fight Night: Sacramento Preview
Joey
July 9
The show AFTER the big July PPV always tends to have some sort of bad vibes attached to it and I guess this one isn't any different. In 2016, injuries took us from Michael Chiesa vs Tony Ferguson to John Lineker vs Michael McDonald (two guys no longer in the org). In 2017, the UFC loaded up their July PPV slate and gave us Gunnar Nelson vs Santiago Ponzinibbio the week after an injury (and sinus infection) cursed card from Vegas. Last year, the UFC gave us Blagoy Ivanov vs JDS and Sage Northcutt vs Zak Ottow after Miocic vs DC. This year's card after Vegas is either good or bad depending almost solely on how you feel about the main event. Fights 2-13 are your usual garden variety Fight Night mix of intriguing and irrelevant but the main event, a clash between Germaine de Randamie and Aspen Ladd, will likely determine whether it's the worst thing ever or a totally acceptable main event. I can kind of see the two sides at play here. WMMA title fights are acceptable main and co-main events but convincing MMA's audience that there's quality outside of the title fights is often met with chuckles, snickers and some derisiveness. MMA fans work in doses and drips and so foistering this main event upon the audience even years after the rise of WMMA requires some understanding that there's a chunk of fans who won't see this as a quality headliner. Aspen Ladd to my knowledge has never been on a main card and GDR has had one fight in two years. On the other hand if one had the ability to view both fighters objectively, this is a pretty damn good fight. Headline worthy? I mean why not. It's a pseudo #1 contender fight with a former champion and a rising prospect. Seems totally acceptable to me. Either way we got thirteen fights to talk about so let's just get on with it.
Fights: 13
Debuts: Brianna Van Buren, John Allan, Wellington Turman
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 5 (John Phillips OUT, Wellington Turman IN vs Karl Roberson/Gian Villante OUT, John Allan IN vs Mike Rodriguez/Cynthia Calvillo OUT, Brianna Van Buren IN vs Livia Souza/Sara McMann OUT, Julianna Pena IN vs Nicco Montano/Martin Day OUT, Vince Morales IN vs Benito Lopez)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 8 (Urijah Faber, Josh Emmett, Beneil Dariush, Andre Fili, Julianna Pena, Nicco Montano, Darren Elkins, Cezar Mutante)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC: 1 (Darren Elkins)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 9 (Germaine De Randamie, Ricky Simon, Aspen Ladd, Beneil Dariush, Drakkar Klose, Mirsad Bektic, Livia Souza, Ryan Hall,Pingyuan Liu)
Cage Corrosion (Fighters who have not fought within a year of the date of the fight) (12-26)- Urijah Faber (I could/should put him in the debut category but Faber was never cut and so I figure he's better suited here?), Nicco Montano, Julianna Pena, Marvin Vettori, Mirsad Bektic
Undefeated Fighters (25-27)- Aspen Ladd
Fighters with at least four fights in the UFC with 0 wins over competition still in the organization (9-8)-
Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (17-16)- Nicco Montano, Ryan Hall, Karl Roberson
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- It's only fair to start with what can only be described as an experiment of sorts by the UFC. We currently have on the calendar four WMMA main events and rumors of a 5th (I've heard some rumblings about Rose vs Nina Ansaroff in the late Fall) is out there. The UFC is clearly giving us more WMMA main events and taking some chances in the process. Part of this is clearly an ESPN design; you give them four shows a month more or less and you're less concerned about popping a number on a digital platform. The scheduling and the assembly line of "See UFC product, get UFC product" on ESPN+ allows you to be a bit more flexible. It's kinda cool that in a span of four weeks, we've gotten a massive HW fight, a big UFC PPV, this show with a credible WMMA main event and then a pretty solid San Antonio main event with RDA vs Leon Edwards. We get a little bit of everything and I'm glad Ladd vs GDR occupies a part of that. With less of an expectation to do a one off rating (Ladd vs GDR probably would've been the lowest rated show on FS1) then I hope we see more credible WMMA main events. In a vacuum, I'd rather see two top 5 fighters at strawweight headline an event than two big doughy guys at LHW or HW just because we're afraid the audience might not like it.
2- At the same time I have zero problems admitting GDR vs Aspen Ladd as a main event wasn't making me want to rush out and buy a ticket if it was in my town. The more I think about it though. the more intrigued I am about it. Maybe it's just the "it's coming to get excited!" aspect of an approaching card or what but I'm genuinely excited by this main event. Maybe it's because GDR could either be Amanda Nunes' next opponent or the ultimate 'Whatever happened to?" story.  Germaine de Randamie's title shot was somewhat circumstantial  at best but be it by hook or by crook, she DID win the UFC's first ever featherweight title. After pulling out of fights on and off for three straight years (and with wins over Anna Elmose and Larissa Pacheco of all people), Germaine was ushered into a fight with Holly Holm in a makeshift main event. She won the first three rounds in my estimation, lost the final two and in a fair and just world, probably loses the fight with points deducted for repeated shots after the bell in rounds 1 and 2. We don't live in an alternate universe, we live in a current reality and SO de Randamie beat Holm on points to become champ. What happened then? Well....de Randamie copped to a hand injury after the fact, hinting she wouldn't fight Cyborg. She came out a bit later and said she wouldn't fight Cyborg because Cyborg was a PED user. She was stripped of the belt, hinted at retiring, came back, got hurt, hinted at retirement some more and then finally returned in a one sided breeze vs Rocky Pennington. The point of all that is to say that GDR is either about to break out into the best version of herself with a dominant win over Aspen Ladd or she's going to just disappear for two years after this fight.
3- Is Aspen Ladd more or less rushed than when Sara McMann got a title shot off of beating Shayna Baszler and Sheila Gaff? Ladd's got some credible wins but she's still super green and like a lot of green WMMA prospects, she pretty much gets by on her ability to be aggressive and dogged in firefights. Offensively though she's so much fun to watch. This fight in tight with GDR's crisp powerful boxing vs Ladd's aggression, pressure and fearlessness could be a real treat. Also let's not forget that Ladd absolutely has the strength to just bowl over GDR the way Nunes did as well.
4- Fun question; would you prefer the winner of this fight vs Amanda Nunes at bantamweight or up 10 lbs at featherweight?
5- The total lack of hype from the UFC on the return of Urijah Faber almost makes it feel like they're embarrassed he's even trying this.
6- Karl Roberson's UFC run thus far has been pretty easy to figure out. He's had four fights and gone 2-2 with an easy enough pattern; guy gets him down? He gets subbed. Guy doesn't? He wins. He subbed Darren Stewart which is still a pretty impressive win in hindsight and beat up on Jack Marshman in November. He took a really short notice fight vs Glover Teixeira in January and was beating the shit out of him before Glover did as he do; got on top and subbed him out in the first round. Roberson gets the debuting Wellington Turman and it's going to be an interesting test to see if he can avoid getting taken down against a guy making his debut on short notice. I still think Roberson has high upside and is more or less a victim of some unfair rough matchmaking.
7- Julianna Pena is back after taking a year and change off and it's surprising just how little fanfare her return is getting. Pena's last fight was on Fox in the headline spot vs Valentina Shevchenko in a fight she lost by armbar in the second round. Before that though, she had beaten the likes of Jessica Eye and Cat Zingano and looked to be on her way to maybe becoming something in the post Rousey landscape. The fact she's sort of just slipped into the picture as a late notice replacement for a filler prelim fight is so weird. Pena is just 29 and even if her striking was really rough to watch, she's the sort of fighter who has enough in her arsenal as a strong (yet clunky) wrestler that I can't rule her out in what remains at 135 lbs. We've seen the likes of Rocky Pennington get title shots and Nunes is close to cleaning out the division so maybe Pena (or even her opponent Nicco Montano) has a shot at creeping back up in the title picture quickly.
8- Casual reminder that Nicco Montano was the first ever UFC women's flyweight champ. Kinda gets forgotten given how things played out with her.
9- So are we officially off the Mirsad Bektic hype train now?
10- Ryan Hall vs Darren Elkins is such a weirdo fight on paper that I can't help but want to see how it plays out. At the very least we know (hope) Elkins won't take any significant damage via strikes.
11- Sheymon Moraes vs Andre Fili is a really good fight that almost feels misplaced as a prelim fodder fight but will be worth your time if you search it out. A damn good fight between two solid mid level FWs.
12- Does any card better encapsulate the collapse of TAM like this one does?
Interview with Annie Saunders by Steve Marsh
In 1960, on the CBS game show I’ve Got a Secret, audience members laughed nervously as John Cage performed “Water Walk,” a three-minute composition where Cage makes music with a water pitcher, an electric mixer, ice cubes, a rubber ducky, and a tape recorder, among other common household items. Fluxus Festival curator Christopher Rountree tapped Annie Saunders to help him adapt Cage’s performance for the final night of the festival. Saunders’ theater company, Wilderness, concentrates on site-based experiential theater, largely set in disused, urban spaces marked for demolition. We caught up with Saunders via FaceTime on a spring visit to her parents home in the Bay Area and discussed the deep social need for hanging out in immersive, open-ended environments where the artists in charge are not telling us that everything is going to be okay.
SM: How long have you had to get this piece ready?
AS: Chris approached me about it at Christmas time. I met him a year ago, when Chris was conducting another show in an opera festival in Omaha, Nebraska and he saw The Wreck [Saunders’ experimental opera]. He and I talked a little bit after we were in Omaha about possibilities for collaboration. That was kind of just a preliminary conversation, and then in December he called me up for this.
SM: John Cage didn't accept that music was an idea for a communication—when he conscientiously wrote something sad he was frustrated that the audience and critics were often apt to laugh. He quit making music until he read the writings of Ananda Coomaraswamy positing that, “the responsibility of artists is to imitate nature in her manner of aspiration.” So Water Walk isn’t a piece of music interpreting water, it’s actually meant to mimic the sound of water.
AS: I think the domestication of water as well. It's like bottle of soda, blender, steam cooker, bathtub. It's all the ways that we’ve tried to contain those natural resources.
SM: Cage may have invented “The Happening” before Allan Kaprow—Kaprow attended Cage’s composition class at the New School. Cage thought theatrically, in any case. So does his score for this piece read like a script?
AS: Yeah. Absolutely.
SM: How familiar were you with his work before taking this on?
AS: I was familiar with him only through the dance world, so only really because of Merce [Cunningham] and also because of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, who uses some Cage and also Steve Reich. My master's degree was in modernism and philosophy, but I wrote a lot about visual arts. I wrote my master's thesis about minimalism. It relates to masculinity, and it was mainly about visual art and literature, but there was some music stuff in there. Really just in the past year I've been really working robustly with music people. All my theater work has sound design but I rarely work with live musicians. So when I first read Water Walk, I knew I wanted to make it longer, to not just do it for three minutes. As soon as I watched the video, I wanted to see what happens to the performer in doing this over and over again. And I also was very drawn to everything that happens on the tape, like the whole situation of the live to tape the TV thing. I knew I wanted to include that and I knew I wanted to loop it.
SM: Oh wow.
AS: I love watching that thing. I just feel like there's so much and I'm really excited that we get to use it so many times, because I feel like the mission of it starts to become this other thing. On that tape, Cage is this kind of blissed out guru, sort of oblivious to the audience and the presenter and the whole situation. Also, I think, really into the idea of the live to tape audience, who are so unlike the experimental music audience.
SM: Yes, music critics of the time were very skeptical of Cage, and classical or even “experimental” music audiences aren’t always the most progressive.
AS: I relate to that very profoundly. When I make stuff, the thing that gets me so excited is when people are like, “I've never been to the theater before—I heard you had a great bar at this place.” When we take over a warehouse and we do a show, I'm interested in people who are like, “I've walked by this building and there's never anything here and now there's something here, so I came.” That's why I love making work in LA, because there's this kind of event-based audience that aren't a theater or music crowd. They're just people who want to do cool shit and they don't care.
SM: When you go to the Tonight Show or Kimmel or something, they give you candy to rev you up, and you’re told when to clap and when to laugh. The whole thing is artificial, but it's meant to be a simulacrum of something real.
AS: You're watching a performance of sorts, but you're also a performer in the performance and you're also sort of a volunteer. Especially back in the day, when I've Got a Secret was on, they would go get those people from the mall. People would be out for the day, housewives and shit, and they would be like, “We’ll give you a prize.” So in our piece, we're doing this thing where we're actually going to show you how repetitious and boring live performance actually is. We're not going to have a comedian, or a hype man, or a raffle guy. We’re just going to show you the resets and every reset will be real, for 45 minutes.
SM: Cage has that famous quote: “If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all.”
AS: Totally. My suspicion is that we probably won't quite get there.
SM: How will your staging be different than Cage’s was in 1960?
AS: It will be the last piece of the Fluxus festival, in BP Hall. So when the 8pm show in the main hall gets out, they’ll walk into our set. The set with the tables and the bathtub and the piano and everything is in the center of the space and it’s lit like a TV set but it’s oriented in the round. When Cage performed live on I’ve Got a Secret, it would have been boomed and that's how we're going to do the amplification for ours as well. When Chris starts playing the composition Water Walk, he will be followed by a boom operator. He'll play the composition seven times and he's going to try and do it exactly the same every time and he'll fail—he'll become agitated and tired and wet.
SM: Things will be getting fucked up, the radios will break…
AS: And so during the resets, the stage hands will come out, they'll mop and they'll put new water in the bathtub and they'll put new ice cubes out. And the set will become a pile of shit. And that's also a lot to do with Fluxus. Actually I was reading La Monte Young, and he has this quote: “Fluxus is the state of things.” That's the actual life—the impossible thing is stasis. The thing to do as a radical Fluxus artist is actually to try to do things the same and fail and let the audience witness. Basically, it goes from being a recreation of a previous thing that happened on TV to being just what's happening in the room.
SM: Wow.
AS: I am interested in duration and boredom and I'm interested in what happens in between. You have an expectation of the artist: that they're going to resolve your feelings for you. We have this expectation of tension, build up and then release. This playwright or this composer is going to take care of me in this way. They’re going to help me with my need for things to resolve. And I think Cage was dealing with this idea that maybe I’m not going to do that.
SM: We think of John Cage as being kind of this avant-garde composer who didn't care about what was going on politically, but instead he saw his music as a critique of what was going on in the world, whether in Vietnam or with the Civil Rights movement. Why is this piece interesting to you in 2019?
AS: That's a great question and a big question. Something I think about a lot is an audience that wants total agency over how they consume stories. I think a lot about the audience that wants to download a TV show and watch it on their own time. Those same people want to be given access to temporal human interactive events that will not happen again.
SM: Yes. We crave those kinds of events. Why?
AS: I think, in our increasingly digitally mediated culture, magically disruptive, spontaneously intimate, interactive, real time happenings of togetherness are really needed for humanity and really desired. Fluxus as a whole, and the whole idea of happenings—the democracy of that, and the spontaneity of that, and the humanity and the possibility for fuck ups, is really important to me.
NOPE BOOK TAG!
Tag creator (A BookTube Book) - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQt_…
1. NOPE Ending: A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.
This is a tough one.  I rarely hate how literature ends.  I’ll name a few comics and then move on the literature.
Novels: The Man who fell to Earth by Walter Tevis (Love this novel but hate the ending.) The Dresden Files: Changes The Frankenstein Papers by Fred Saberhagen (He writes Dracula so well but his Frankenstein Monster...  Spoilers, he’s a f--king alien with amnesia.  That’s the twist.  He just THOUGHT he was created by Victor Frankenstein.  It’s so... Stupid. The Last vampire by Whitley Strieber.   Lilith’s Dream by Whitley Strieber   On my Honor
Lolita.  WHY is this a classic?!?
______________________________
Comics: The Sandman: The Kindly Ones.  I know it’s a classic but out of all of the original Sandman this is the one I liked the least, loved the rest. The Dreaming (1990s to early 2000s version).   It’s just... awful. Madman & Monster (written by Steve Niles and published by IDW).  I hate the ending but like the premise.
Nineteen eighty-four by George Orwell.  Great novel, just very depressing.
Manga:
Return to Labyrinth.  The author (Jake T. Forbes) just wanted his cake and eat it too.  He establishes that Jareth is Sarah’s true love but at the same time decides that they can’t be together “For reasons” and has Toby give a “I learned something today” speech that lasts several pages to justify it.   No, if it’s true love, they’re supposed to be together.  Don’t try to placate both the shippers and the fans who want them to not be a couple, you won’t appease anyone if you try to appease both.
Wolf’s Rain: It’s just so sad.   Why!??
 _______________________
2. NOPE Protagonist: The main character you dislike and drives you crazy.
Novels: Miriam from The Hunger, The Last Vampire, and Lilith’s Dream by Whitley Strieber.
The Vampire Armand from Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles.   He’s too much of a Sadist.  I don’t understand the appeal.   Lolita.  WHY is this a classic?!
Comics:
Echo from The Dreaming (Late 90s / early 2000s version)
Riri Williams, the current writing of the Captain Marvel comics,  actually pretty much all of Marvel at the moment... _______________________________________________
3. NOPE Series: A series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it, or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore.
Novels:
The Hunger book series by Whitley Strieber
Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, most everything after Tale of The Body Thief and Tale of the Body Thief wasn’t that good... The Dresden Files.  I don’t know, my interest just kind of waned and also I came across a few unpleasant fans who legitimately believe women and men “talk differently” and “use different language” when speaking and told me a woman can’t write male characters and visa versa.   Mary Shelley begs to differ!    Comics: The current Sandman Universe comics...
Morbius: The Living Vampire (1990s run)
Manga:
Return to Labyrinth.  The author (Jake T. Forbes) just wanted his cake and eat it too.  He establishes that Jareth is Sarah’s true love but at the same time decides that they can’t be together “For reasons” and has Toby give a “I learned something today” speech that lasts several pages to justify it.   No, if it’s true love, they’re supposed to be together.  Don’t try to placate both the shippers and the fans who want them to not be a couple, you won’t appease anyone if you try to appease both.
_________________________________
4. NOPE Popular pairing: A ship you don’t support.
I don’t really hate many pairings...
Oh, wait.  Lolita.  Do I really need to explain? Comics: Joker and Harley Quinn (original versions as created for Batman The Animated series.) Cain and Abel and their sister-wives in The Dreaming (late 90s to early 2000s comics).  That was just...  Oh, my God. Was that just to be edgy!?    For God’s sake, Abel’s fraternal twin sister was Cain’s wife and locked in attic!?   WTF?!? Lucien and Nuala (also in The Dreaming late 90s and early 2000s version).   Essentially “Hey, the people we’re in love with are dead.   Why don’t we hook up?” “Okay!  You’re good enough.  Let’s settle on each other.”
Does Caitlin R. Kiernan have any concept of love, at all?  Steve and Bucky. Not because it’s a bad ship or because it’s gay but because the fans who support it are so rabid and if you suggest it’s not canon they immediately assume you’re a homophobe and send you hate.
SwanQueen (Emma Swan and The Evil Queen in Once Upon a Time) similar reasons as above.   ____________________________
5. NOPE. Plot twist: A plot twist you didn’t see coming or didn’t like.
The Frankenstein Papers by Fred Saberhagen.
(He writes Dracula so well but his Frankenstein Monster...  Spoilers, he’s a f--king alien with amnesia.  That’s the twist.  He just THOUGHT he was created by Victor Frankenstein.  It’s so... Stupid. _______________________________
6. NOPE. Protagonist action/decision: A character decision that made you shake your head NOPE.
Faust and his hornness for FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Gretchen and almost everything he did because of that horniness.
7. NOPE. Genre: A genre you will never read.
I don’t think there’s a genre I’d never read. But I’m not a big fan of young adult romances or bodice rippers and torture porn.    I’m not into errotica or graphic violence even though I adore Gothic Horror.
8.  Nope format:
Umm....  I prefer hardcover to paperback but I don’t avoid any particular format.  I do hate when the new Barnes and Nobel classics call things like Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, and Bram Stoker “Gothic fantasy” written across the cover.  It perpetuates the idea that horror is lowbrow and it angers me that we refuse to consider good quality horror to be horror anymore.
Anne Rice’s Prince Lestat (when I read it with wet hands and the dust jacket off) the color on the cover started to turn my fingers dark blue.   I never want that to happen again.
9. NOPE. Trope: A trope that makes you go NOPE.
Long lost child that the protagonist didn’t know they had because the mother (or in rare cases someone else) thought it would be best the child never know they are related to the protagonist because their life is too dangerous / cursed / ect...  I hate when parental rights are stomped on for plot, and especially when “it’s okay because it’s the mother who did it and the mother just wants whats best for the child.”
10. NOPE. Recommendation: A book recommendation that is constantly hyped and pushed at you that you simply refuse to read.
I’ve never refused to read a recommendation but I have later thought “Why did you think I’d like this?!”
Twilight “Because you love vampires.” Oh, and Frankenstein’s Monster: A Novel by Susan Heyboer O’keefe.  Just because he looks like the version from the Shelley novel doesn’t mean he acted like it.  That as awful.
  ______________________________
11. NOPE. Cliche/pet peeve: A cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.
Wasn’t this already number 9?  I thought we covered this with tropes.  Many tropes are cliches.   Oh, well...
Long lost child that the protagonist didn’t know they had because the mother (or in rare cases someone else) thought it would be best the child never know they are related to the protagonist because their life is too dangerous / cursed / ect...  I hate when parental rights are stomped on for plot, and especially when “it’s okay because it’s the mother who did it and the mother just wants whats best for the child.”    (Cough) Susan in The Dresden Files. (Cough.)
Oh, and “He’s blue collar so we’re going to use him as the serrogate racist / bigot now even though he wasn’t before.”  (Cough)  Merv Pumpkinhead in the new version of The Dreaming. (Cough.)
12. NOPE. Love interest:
I thought we established this with the ship conversation?
I don’t feel like re-writing it, just re-read that one.  Same answers apply.   I guess I can add The Corinthian from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.  You know if it ever gets a film or TV series adaptation someone somewhere will find him attractive and start making errotic art and fan fiction about him...
13. NOPE. Book: A book that shouldn’t have existed that made you say NOPE.
The Dreaming Late 90s early 2000s version.   I don’t really like saying any book shouldn’t exist. But there are some that are really awful sequels or insults to an established lore because of how subpar they are.   ___________________________________
14. NOPE. Villain: A scary villain/antagonist you would hate to cross and would make you run in the opposite direction.
The Corinthian from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and pretty much any antagonist created by George R. R. Martin.
15. NOPE. Death: A character death that still haunts you.
Morpheus in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.
And even Abel’s death even though he comes back later.
___________________________
16. NOPE. Author: An author you had a bad experience reading and have decided to quit.
Anne Rice.  She doesn’t even remotely write the way she used to . It feels vapid now.  And i have trouble reconciling myself that the angry bird aliens from Brevena and the Replimoids exist in the same universe as Interview with the Vampire.
Also she’s been very cruel and unprofessional in her behavior to those who have criticized her work and “I didn’t know I was sicking people on anyone” shared negative reviews with direct links to pages on her Facebook over the years.  it got nasty.  She even dug up one of my old reviews for Blood Canticle that I wrote FIFTEEN years ago!
And to a lesser extent, J. K. Rowling.   Her views of Americans and especially “Nomaj” (linguistically) just makes me cringe internally.  Americans are the more old fashioned with language, not hipster (i.e Elevator vs. Lift, Cellular phone vs. Mobile). Not to mention cloistered religious-style orders (like Catholicism) use the same terms from country to country.  This is also true with Wicca.  Linguistically the American terms in Fantastic Beasts do NOT make sense.
