I’m very tired. you probably heard that Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Dam to slow Ukraine’s counter offensive. here’s something I didn’t quite realize: since this February, the Russians operated the dam in juuuuust the right way so that as much water would build up as possible when the snow melted and spring showers started. and then they blew the whole thing up.

40,000 people may need to be evacuated. I don’t really have the energy to say anything else right now.

Hospitallers Medical Battalion: actual angels can confirm. they’re combat-zone medical services - you know how humanitarian groups like MFS and Red Cross have to pause operations due to the Russians fucking shooting at humanitarian zones? yeah, these guys don’t pause for bullets, they fucking walk into them and they bring out anyone they can.

Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation: you can choose from a number of various fundraiser projects here, if you’re feeling particularly picky. for those of you who balk at the idea of supporting anything military just please remember that things like vehicles and drones aren’t just for military use, they’re also for evacuation and finding the wounded and they’re fucking vital.

KSE Foundation: similar to the above, KSE has multiple projects you can choose from to donate to. looking at it right now, one of the projects with the lowest amounts of money raised thus far - despite being started in April - is Seeds for Ukraine, which will help Ukraine recover from the ecological devastation Russia has been wreaking (and with Ukraine, the countries that rely on Ukraine’s grain exports that Russia keeps trying to steal).

Come Back Alive: do these guys even need the introduction? they’re Come Back Alive. I’m kissing all of them.

United24: Zelenskyy’s brain child, and the official fundraising platform of Ukraine. Mark Hamill recommends the fundraisers for drones in particular.

UAnimals: Nova Kakhovka’s zoo got... pretty much completely swept away. all zoo residents except the birds have drowned. UAnimals has tried throughout the occupation to keep the animals safe, and they’ve been reporting on the status of the zoo. I don’t really know what to say except that I hope they’re able to save the pets and strays in the towns along the river.

This wave of people joining “creators for Palestine” has me really frustrated.

I have no issue with supporting the right to safety and freedom for the people of Palestine and I have no issue with wanting to help but I DO have an issue with the organizations that they are choosing to support.

One of the main organizations is the UNRWA, a confirmed Hamas puppet. The UNRWA is actively stealing aid from civilians, and members were actively a part of the October 7th massacre and held hostages in their homes. Why would you want to send them money?!?!?

The amount of misinformation and disinformation that is being spread at the moment is absolutely appalling. Israel isn’t “not sending enough aid”, Hamas is attacking humanitarian aid crossings and stealing the aid that they do let in.

In many of the cases of these creators, I do believe that they have only the best intentions but they are choosing to support a terror organization rather than actually helping the people they claim to care about.

There are also so many people denying the very legitimate REASONS that Israel is doing what they’re doing. I’m not saying I support everything they are doing but I understand why they’re doing it. If you want safety and freedom for the Palestinian people, you have to support the destruction of Hamas. There will be no peace until they are gone. It’s really a simple matter when you strip it down to the basics (not the conflict itself, that’s very complicated, but the reality of the current situation regarding any hope for peace).

Anyway… I now have to decide if I’m going to unfollow all of these creators whose work otherwise brings me joy. They are contributing to the false narrative and waving a literal imperial flag under the guise of “indigenous liberation” (don’t even get me started on the stupid fucking watermelons…)

If anyone has any advice about how to deal with this (tips on separating the content from the creator perhaps) or people who ARE doing good work and are actually helping the situation, please let me know.

This post is most specifically about SMOSH but it applies to a lot of creators. I’m so tired, and I can’t even begin to imagine how the Jewish people in those circles are feeling. People have been calling for Noah Grossman to be fired for being Jewish a zionist for months now, this cannot be helping that situation. I want him to know that the people with critical thinking skills and fucking basic understanding of the complicated history and current situation in the Middle East support him.

If you don't have a clear understanding of what zionism means

If you didn't know before reading this that there are multiple types of Zionism

If you think that zionism means support of the Isreali government

If you don't know much about Hamas

If you don't have any idea about what's been happening in Israel for the past few years

please don't make general political statements about what's happening rn. Don't claim you understand what's happening enough to explain it or make judgements on what anyone involved should do. This is how misinformation is spread. This is how propoganda that harms both Jews and Palestinians gets spread. This is how you give a platform to antisemites who use anti-zionism as a cover for their bigotry. This is how you accidentally spread messages that actually mean to kill all the Jews because you didn't have the context to understand that that's what it meant.

You can express sympathy or share posts with links to donate to organizations that are trying to help people affected and get people out of gaza, but please please please don't make a statement about it or try to explain it.

There is so much misinformation out there about this, there always has been, ever since antisemitism became a thing like 2000 years ago there has been propoganda about every single thing that Jews were involved in.

I know a lot of people are posting things about how "your silence is deafening" and all that but I'm gonna be honest I would rather you be silent than share information you don't have the understanding to fact-check or make a statement you don't have the background knowledge to make.

If you want to help, here are some organizations you can donate to and share around, but beyond that please try to avoid spreading misinformation. This really isn't something you can just look up and find credible information about, especially with how much propoganda has been used against both Jews and Arabs (I know not all Palestinians are Arabs but a lot of the anti-Arab propoganda gets applied to them because people are ignorant)

MDAIS are paramedics in Israel and they need equipment to help treat victims of the war

The Palestine Red Crescent Society are paramedics in Palestine and also need funding for equipment to help treat victims of the war

This is a GoFund me to raise funds to rebuild Kibbutz Nir Oz where many people were killed/ kidnapped/ or are still missing and many homes were destroyed

UNRWA is a UN relief organization for Palestinian refugees. Israel, Egypt, and Hamas are beginning to talk about organizing a ceasefire and safe passage for Gaza citizens and if that happens then the UNRWA will need the extra funding to help them. They also just generally need the funding.

Hatzalah of Israel is a volunteer emergency medical response organization and they also need funding for equipment. Just, if you see any emergency medical response organizations they NEED the supplies. Everyone is running out of medical supplies in Israel in Gaza

Here's another medical response organization. They focus on children in Gaza and aren't generally emergency medical response, but recently have been mobilizing emergency medical shelters.

This one is for Thai migrant workers who are more at risk of dying in the war because of language barriers and migrant status. Because this website is all in hebrew I will link a tumblr post with an english explanation of what they do here

Exclusive: Some US officials say in internal memo Israel may be violating international law in Gaza | Reuters

Some senior U.S. officials have advised Secretary of State Antony Blinken that they do not find "credible or reliable" Israel's assurances that it is using U.S.-supplied weapons in accordance with international humanitarian law, according to an internal State Department memo reviewed by Reuters.

Other officials upheld support for Israel's representation.

Under a National Security Memorandum (NSM) issued by President Joe Biden in February, Blinken must report to Congress by May 8 whether he finds credible Israel's assurances that its use of U.S. weapons does not violate U.S. or international law.

By March 24, at least seven State Department bureaus had sent in their contributions to an initial "options memo" to Blinken. Parts of the memo, which has not been previously reported, were classified.

The submissions to the memo provide the most extensive picture to date of the divisions inside the State Department over whether Israel might be violating international humanitarian law in Gaza.

"Some components in the department favored accepting Israel's assurances, some favored rejecting them and some took no position," a U.S. official said.

A joint submission from four bureaus - Democracy Human Rights & Labor; Population, Refugees and Migration; Global Criminal Justice and International Organization Affairs – raised "serious concern over non-compliance" with international humanitarian law during Israel's prosecution of the Gaza war.

The assessment from the four bureaus said Israel's assurances were "neither credible nor reliable." It cited eight examples of Israeli military actions that the officials said raise "serious questions" about potential violations of international humanitarian law.

These included repeatedly striking protected sites and civilian infrastructure; "unconscionably high levels of civilian harm to military advantage"; taking little action to investigate violations or to hold to account those responsible for significant civilian harm and "killing humanitarian workers and journalists at an unprecedented rate."

The assessment from the four bureaus also cited 11 instances of Israeli military actions the officials said "arbitrarily restrict humanitarian aid," including rejecting entire trucks of aid due to a single "dual-use" item, "artificial" limitations on inspections as well as repeated attacks on humanitarian sites that should not be hit.

Another submission to the memo reviewed by Reuters, from the bureau of Political and Military Affairs, which deals with U.S. military assistance and arms transfers, warned Blinken that suspending U.S. weapons would limit Israel's ability to meet potential threats outside its airspace and require Washington to re-evaluate "all ongoing and future sales to other countries in the region."

Any suspension of U.S. arms sales would invite "provocations" by Iran and aligned militias, the bureau said in its submission, illustrating the push-and-pull inside the department as it prepares to report to Congress.

The submission did not directly address Israel's assurances.

Inputs to the memo from the Office of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism and U.S. ambassador to Israel Jack Lew said they assessed Israel's assurances as credible and reliable, a second U.S. official told Reuters.

The State Department's legal bureau, known as the Office of the Legal Adviser, "did not take a substantive position" on the credibility of Israel's assurances, a source familiar with the matter said.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the agency doesn't comment on leaked documents.

"On complex issues, the Secretary often hears a diverse range of views from within the Department, and he takes all of those views into consideration," Miller said.

MAY 8 REPORT TO CONGRESS

When asked about the memo, an Israeli official said: "Israel is fully committed to its commitments and their implementation, among them the assurances given to the U.S. government."

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Biden administration officials repeatedly have said they have not found Israel in violation of international law.

Blinken has seen all of the bureau assessments about Israel's pledges, the second U.S. official said.

Matthew Miller on March 25 said the department received the pledges. However, the State Department is not expected to render its complete assessment of credibility until the May 8 report to Congress.

Further deliberations between the department's bureaus are underway ahead of the report's deadline, the U.S. official said.

USAID also provided input to the memo. "The killing of nearly 32,000 people, of which the GOI (Government of Israel) itself assesses roughly two-thirds are civilian, may well amount to a violation of the international humanitarian law requirement," USAID officials wrote in the submission.

USAID does not comment on leaked documents, a USAID spokesperson said.

The warnings about Israel's possible breaches of international humanitarian law made by some senior State Department officials come as Israel is vowing to launch a military offensive into Rafah, the southern-most pocket of the Gaza Strip that is home to over a million people displaced by the war, despite repeated warnings from Washington not to do so.

Israel's military conduct has come under increasing scrutiny as its forces have killed 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the enclave's health authorities, most of them women and children.

Israel's assault was launched in response to the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and 250 others taken hostage.

The National Security Memorandum was issued in early February after Democratic lawmakers began questioning whether Israel was abiding by international law.

The memorandum imposed no new legal requirements but asked the State Department to demand written assurances from countries receiving U.S.-funded weapons that they are not violating international humanitarian law or blocking U.S. humanitarian assistance.

It also required the administration to submit an annual report to Congress to assess whether countries are adhering to international law and not impeding the flow of humanitarian aid.

If Israel's assurances are called into question, Biden would have the option to "remediate" the situation through actions ranging from seeking fresh assurances to suspending further U.S. weapons transfers, according to the memorandum.

Biden can suspend or put conditions on U.S. weapons transfers at any time.

He has so far resisted calls from rights groups, left-leaning Democrats and Arab American groups to do so.

But earlier this month he threatened for the first time to put conditions on the transfer of U.S. weapons to Israel, if it does not take concrete steps to improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Notably, despite its tight control of many aspects of life in the Gaza Strip, Hamas has resisted imposing any formal licensing or inspection regime on building contractors. This arrangement facilitates a multiplicity of unregulated contractors, who are well placed to help divert building supplies for the construction of tunnels or other military projects, without leaving much in the way of a paper trail.

Hamas also tries to directly involve itself in the work of UN agencies in Gaza. According to press reports by The Times of Israel, senior members of Hamas have sat in on and even led associations of UNRWA staff. A police state of informants, imprisonment of critics without trial, and pervasive torture in detention facilities mean that anyone critical of Hamas’s interference in these groups is likely to be intimidated into silence. A mid-October incident in which UNRWA publicly alleged that men from Gaza’s Hamas-run “Ministry of Health” had seized fuel from its depots—then deleted the announcement—indicates the extent of aid groups’ vulnerability, and the immense challenges of trying to protect their independence when operating in areas controlled by ruthless militants.

Most shockingly, the recent testimony of an Israeli hostage released from Gaza states that, in at least one case, a kidnapped Israeli child was held captive by an UNRWA teacher, and kept locked in a room in the teacher’s house in cooperation with Hamas.

The case of Hamas in the Gaza Strip is especially illustrative, but it is certainly not unique.

The Houthis in Yemen have been even more brazen. In 2020, they attempted to impose a 2 percent tax on all foreign assistance entering areas under their control. They eventually walked that position back when they realized that many aid organizations would cease operations if forced to directly deposit money into Houthi accounts. Nevertheless, they have devised a variety of other methods to ensure that they receive their cut, and humanitarian organizations have been continuing the flow of money and supplies, without taking any effective measures to stop Houthi exploitation.

Around the same time as the Houthis were demanding a percentage of the humanitarian assistance to Yemen, UNICEF took steps to make its Yemen programming budget less transparent. As of the last two years, they no longer publish line items in their budget. (Compare this itemized list of their spending in Yemen in 2020 with these public accounts from 2021, which contain a detailed breakdown of spending in many countries—but Yemen is a notable exception.) According to the Counter Extremism Project, in some instances, this may serve to cover up their continued patronage of known Houthi-controlled companies, such as the private security provider Yemen Armored.

uuuhhh yall know that the situation is really, really bad there, right? like “the government is holed up in a handful of buildings because gangs control the capital and the country is about to be a failed state” bad. it’s “the Haitian government asked for other countries to literally invade it and restore order” bad. uuuhhhh here are some charities you can donate to.

Doctors Without Borders: you know who these people are and I say that with immense affection in my heart.

Hope for Haiti (!!!!!!) okay Charity Navigator gives these guys a full 100% what the fuck. I knew they were good but holy fuck they’ve been one of the top ten since 2010. they focus on supporting education, healthcare especially for women, clean water, and providing Haitians with grants and loans.

Haitian Health Foundation focuses on, uh, health. they have clinics and also make home visits for patients unable to travel, and they provide emergency transport and mobile health clinics as well. they do vaccinations, food, dental care and mental health care. if you want to focus on the healthcare side of things (other than DWB), these guys are great.

Fonkoze another Haitian-focused charity group, this one provides Haitian women with education, health services, and other resources to help them escape poverty. very very neat, also a great score on charity navigator.

Save the Children in Haiti: same organization that is very busy in Ukraine right now, it’s a charity that focuses on children. exactly what it says. they are wonderful though and I do love them.

"unrwa is a hamas puppet!!" yes of course. that's why multiple EU nations including the UK and Germany, have resumed unrwa funding, correct? "unrwa steals aid!" and that's why israeli settlers are blocking the aid, celebrating blocking it, attacking palestinian drivers, and actually destroying the aid, correct? maybe in their wisdom they want to destroy what little supplies the gazans have access to before the big evil unrwa does. given that unrwa is DEFINITELY the villain here, despite multiple countries finding israels accusations of them being terrorists unsubstantiated.

God, sometimes the takes I come across are hilarious.

Sometimes I think some people actually have literally zero intelligence whatsoever.

The UNRWA is confirmed to have been involved in October 7th and to have been holding hostages. 10 members were fired due to direct involvement following the release of chat room conversations. Hamas was photographed hanging out and shooting civilians next to UN cars in front of a UNRWA building.

Hamas is stealing aid, there is literally footage of them standing on top of aid trucks with machine guns shooting at civilians who dare try to get the aid that’s meant for them. Hamas has attacked aid crossings multiple times. More aid is entering Gaza than before the war, it’s just not being distributed. There are photos of more than 500 aid trucks that were sitting on the Gaza side of the boarder because they aren’t distributing aid. Things literally labeled as “humanitarian aid NOT FOR SALE” are being sold in street markets.

The UK has NOT resumed funding to the UNRWA (see article below). Also the UK is not part of the EU (have you not been paying attention at all?)

Germany has restored aid but with additional measures to try and ensure it is being used correctly.

There are a lot of things you can criticize rightfully about Israel’s actions, but choosing to ignore the wrongdoings of Hamas and the UNRWA and lying about aid distribution isn’t going to help anyone, especially not the citizens of Gaza.

I also recognise the israeli army is doing what they can to minimize civilian casualties, I also recognise it's not always enough. I also also recognise It's difficult to reduce civilian casualties when fighting an enemy that intentionally hides among them as a means of using them as a shield. I also also also recognise Israel cannot afford to just let it slide, as Hamas has proven themselves to be an existential threat to Israelis and Jews worldwide.

I don't have a good solution to the problem. Sorry, the world is complicated like that.
