Dan Heng x Reader: Never forget
TW: Angst, mentions of death.
A/N: I was talking to an AI and bro was SPITTING so I got inspiration from its poetry. Credits to that AI because WOW.

Just a boy who met a girl.
Who both found a light that illuminates each other’s heart — someone who saw one another fully, and who they could see back.
It was strange.
The fact that someone could offer their utmost loyalty to another, to be together and to share each other’s heart… that's a kind of love that makes you look forward to tomorrow, isn't it?
Dan Heng reminisced on his first encounter with them. How their eyes sparkled with joy upon seeing him appear. How he offered his hand to aid them and how they took it almost instantly. He remembered how when their hands touched one another a jolt of electricity ran through him. Almost as if their touch seemed familiar to him.
Dan Heng remembered how beautiful/handsome they were when they first met. The way their e/c eyes sparkled with newfound curiosity and how their cheeks wrinkled from their beam. They looked surreal, so magnificent, and breathtaking. The male remembered how his heart skipped a beat and how he wished to befriend someone for the very first time on his own.
It was like it was meant to be.
Suddenly, a voice interrupted the dark haired male’s thoughts, causing him to flinch and drop his notes. He cursed silently, bending over to pick up his book. He paused upon reading the title, mouth turning into a frown. It wasn’t just any book, it’s cover had been labeled by his own hand.
A journal of memories of the both of you.
He picked up the book gently with trembling hands, resisting the temptation to open it and flip through its contents. He knew he had hid this away and would have to open it someday, but he didn’t feel ready to just yet.
But he missed you. Dearly.
He wanted to see your face and refresh his mind on the fond memories you two shared. The beauty in the smile you wore and the shine your eyes never failed to exhibit.
With shaky hands and a deep inhale, Dan Heng cautiously put his hand on the page to open it.
“Dan Heng!” A voice interrupted him once again, resulting in him placing the book down immediately. “Welt, Stelle, and I are going to Xianzhou Luofu! You should join us, we have to go investigate some Stellaron!”
He sighed, eyes with a hint of worry as he replied.
“Apologies, March… however, I’ll be staying on the express. Do be careful and have a safe journey.”
A whine was heard on the other side of the door as she voiced her complaints before being called by Welt and rushing off. Dan Heng went to lie down on his makeshift bed and sighed, eyes never leaving the book.
Love was truly an infinite subject. It was something we search for all our lives, in all the things we do and in the people we meet. A feeling that enriches our lives and enlightens our hearts.
Love is what makes life worth living. Being able to spend the rest of your lives together in pure bliss enjoying the comfort of each other’s companies. It is being able to believe in another. It's about supporting each other in the good times and the bad, about always being present for someone when they need you — and them the same for you.
Dan Heng’s eyes watered, tears slowly spilling down his cheeks. A sob threatened to spill from his throat, but he suffered in silence, refusing to even let out the smallest of noises.
Love was about never being alone. It was about knowing that someone is always there to support and believe in you even in the darkest hours of the night. But if that was really true… then where were you?
He cried. If only he could’ve done more for you.
If only he was there for you to protect you. Then maybe you still would’ve been here, with him. In his arms.
Then maybe you wouldn’t be gone from this world, leaving him all alone in this cruel world. To be tortured every hour of each waking day, haunted by the mere memory of your dying face. How your lips trembled as blood gushed out your wound. How you cried tears of sorrow and apologized for leaving him so soon.
He remembered the shock he felt upon seeing his lover in such a state. Never in a thousand years did he ever dream of seeing you taking your last dying breath before him. He remembered how tightly he held onto your hands with tears streaming down his cheeks nonstop. How he screamed for shouts for help and how everything was going to be okay. How he could fix this and take you to a doctor, but too much blood had already been lost.
He wouldn’t have made it.
He remembered picking you up as gently as he could, bolting to the Express. How he told you sweet nothings and how much he loved you and how everything was going to be alright. How you’d both be smiling tomorrow again joking about this incident in the future and being together forever.
He remembered looking down at your face as his heart dropped. How your eyes were closed and your chest stopped heaving up and down. He felt the coldness of your skin and slowed down, crumbling to his knees with you in his arms. It was then that he knew…
You were gone.
Dan Heng’s tears intensified as his heart rate quickened tremendously. His breathing got faster and faster as he clutched his chest, hand over his heart. He couldn’t bear this torture any longer. What life was worth living if it wasn’t with you? Why did you have to die? Why couldn’t he have gotten there sooner? Regrets filled him endlessly as he blamed himself for the incident over and over again.
Love was a source of immense joy and deep sorrow— the two sides of this precious treasure thing we call love.
Love is being willing to do anything for the sake of another. For that person to be happy, to protect and support them in every way you can. But why couldn’t he do that for you? He couldn’t save you…
Love is being lost in the memory of their warmth and touch. Their smile and eyes.
But what if the memory was of the bad things too? Being haunted by the picture of their death and never forgetting. Constantly being reminded of them and drowning in an endless amount of sorrow and pain. Missing them dearly every day for the rest of his life? Never being able to move on and forget their everything?
Yes… maybe that’s an example of love too.

Hi, fellow Jing Yuan lover, ready for some crazy thoughts? Too bad I’m about to write them, no need to read any of it of course!
Thinking back to Jing Yuan forgetting reader over and over, call it dementia or not, unwillingly or maybe even willingly forgetting your love and all the love you shared with him and he with you, (I’m inclined to say he keeps falling back in love, but let’s be honest, what are the chances of that happening? I believe in soulmates, but only when there’s work put into the relationship. I don’t believe everyone just has a special someone, you know? OFC IN MY DELUSIONAL MIND HE WOULD KEEP FALLING BACK IN LOVE BECAUSE I THINK I WOULD AND I WANT IT RECIPROCATED, but also not really because I’m too overwhelming, anyways this isn’t supposed to be a self insert but I can’t resist when it’s literally Jingy..)
—but no he doesn’t fall in love with you every time, but every time you’re the same. Smiling at him, knowing all of him but choosing to ignore it and live blissfully, knowing he doesn’t remember you like you know all of him. Now it’s never all bliss, you’re sad he doesn’t remember the many years spent together. Having to re-meet, and waiting till he forgets sometimes it takes years before he does. Perhaps he only willingly forgot every time he started to fall for you. Perhaps he just forgot. Other times, you‘re forced to ‘re-meet’ and it takes no more than a month before he forgets. Though I’d say that’s the lesser likely option.
(Back to brackets talk.. I also believe if you spend long enough with someone you enjoy spending time with (or not, cue enemies to lovers) a feeling would develop. And I think That’d either be something deep and unexplainable like actual love or the purest form of admiration. Or the impurest form and um 😨 SORRY-)

Tbh this all reminds me of a certain world quest onboard the Luofu where you're helping a vidyadhara male try to win over another xianzhou native through poetry HAHA (besides the fact he forgets every time after a certain period of time)
Which in a way explains how Xianzhou people love to be honest. The fire of love eventually dwindles down to the point they don't try anymore. Their youthful appearance can be deceiving, but never try to love a xianzhou native since they've long since gotten tired of loving.
In a way I feel like Jing Yuan is in that category as well. Admire him as much as you want but his heart won't really love again because of how long it's been hehe
And my two aroace cents - love in the form of platonic affection is really a different feeling tbh HAHAH. I love a lot of people after all, and I'm glad they all aware I do without anything else in mind 🦅🦅

Hi Meadows! Just wanted to say your work is really good- and to ask for some advice. I'm finding it really difficult to find an idea I'm PASSIONATE about enough to complete, or a chaptered fic to finish. I'm in a real slump at the minute- would you have any advice for this kind of issue?
hiii! hope you're having a good day, sorry it took me a while to sit down today and get to this.
i have this happen a lot actually! i have a little box of tricks i apply when it happens, maybe one of them can be helpful.
one: delete a scene. or several. sometimes i start writing a scene and i'm so not enjoying it. it's not exciting but i tell myself it has to be there for Transportation and Framing. nah nah nah. it doesn't. delete it and fold the important bits into a scene you actually wanna write.
two: fold two or more ideas together. sometimes i have a couple of ideas of stuff i want to write, but none of them get me engaged enough to open a doc. then i start thinking, well, what if i combine them? what if one leads to another to a third? this, depending on what the ideas are, can ofc be daunting, but also very rewarding.
three: test the idea on someone. sit down and talk through it the idea from start to finish with someone who's willing to listen. be open to bouncing ideas and going "yes, and", essentially. in the early planning stages it's better to heap on ideas than be too restrictive. you can always cut something later (and turn into its own fic).
four: take time to research the idea. i do that a lot with ideas i'm only mildly passionate about, and in the process of learning something new (for example with kafka/fu xuan i read up on ancient chinese poetry, i ching/yi jing hexagrams and walked around the luofu in-game) and it ended up tipping the idea into real passion for me. the beast needs feeding.
five: by the same token -- look up movies and books and songs vaguely similar (or wholly similar) to your idea. it's a good reminder of how every story has been told, and what matters is your unique point of view and spin on it. this goes into feeding the inspiration beast. give it a little snack and see if it grows.
six: fake it til you make it. hype yourself up. hype your own idea up. YEAH ACTUALLY THIS IS A COOL IDEA. YEAH IT DOES DESERVE A MULTI-CHAPTERED FIC TO BE EXPLORED FULLY. I'M THE ONE TO DO IT!!!! sounds silly, feels silly, surprisingly efficient.
seven: just do it. worst advice ever, i know. but sometimes i don't know if an idea is good enough for passionate exploration or not until i sit my ass down and just write down every single thought, visual, idea and sentence i have in my head in a great ugly jumble. once it's down on the page it's easier to assess.
hope something in here helps. and remember be kind to yourself and don't burn out!

Since the 1.6 update is approaching us, here are my thoughts from the latest livestream!
Huge fan of the recent livestreams featuring the characters (rather than the voice actors) bringing us the news. It makes everything feel so much more immersive and highlights the whole "This program is brought to you by the Interastral Peace Corporation" thing.
As for the upcoming update... Critter Pick looks like it'll be a fun event! It'll be a good way to explore the new areas of Herta Space Station, too. I wish we could keep them as permanent pets; if the Trailblazer unlocks their own room on the Astral Express one day, we could keep the critters as an event memento.
Looking forward to new additions to the Simulated Universe as well. I haven't finished everything about the Swarm yet (mostly because of how time-consuming it is to grind through SU), but having more things to do in-game will make sure I'm never out of options for things to do, I suppose.
I don't particularly care about the new optimizations to Forgotten Hall. My RNG on artifacts is trash, so it's not like the optimizations really help me out. They're more so for players who play by the meta and actually clear all the stages.
The most exciting part of the special program would probably be Sunday as our final special guest. I'm hyped for Penacony! For a number of reasons, but mainly because of the various factions we'll get to see interact with each other. Stories (whether they're events or permanent content) that feature characters from different regions and/or factions crossing roads are always fun! I hope it's like the Genshin events where characters from all kinds of different nations got together in the same scenes, like Hues of the Violet Garden (the Inazuma poetry event from 2.6), the Perilous Trail Archon Quest (ft. the Chasm), Summertime Odyssey (on the islands in 2.8), Windblume's Breath (revisiting Mondstadt's Windblume, 3.5)... you get the idea.
Conceptually, Penacony and The Family sound pretty noteworthy. It's giving cult-like vibes, and something about Sunday feels inherently suspicious, especially in the way he speaks and presents himself.
Penacony/The Reverie as a place "where one may travel freely between reality and Dreamscape"... well, Penacony is the Land of Dreams. It's a place that only exists as a dream, "where time forever stands still" (Data Bank -> Relics; Penacony, Land of Dreams). There's an underlying cruelty to being such a place where everything is in a sense stagnant like that, and I hope the game embraces that wholeheartedly. I'm curious to see how they'll try to approach the themes of "dreams" and "time".
Key players from Penacony are the are five great families and The Reviere - it's possible we won't get to see representatives from all of the families, similar to how we stuck to the Xianzhou Luofu while visiting the Xianzhou Alliance. The representatives we'll definitely see are, according to the livestream:
Sunday (?)
Robin (possibly from the same family as Sunday; hard to say, as she could be referred to as "sister" to keep up the notion of being a Family or as a sign of affection/a close relationship, though she also has wings like Sunday so who knows)
Misha (from The Reviere)
Firefly (from the Iris Family)
Gallagher (from the Bloodhound Family)
From the guestlist, some speculations:
Duke Inferno is going to be someone to pay attention to. The Annihilation Gang isn't the Antimatter Legion, but it does follow Nanook, and anything involving Nanook is going to demand our attention. Besides, he's probably going to be involved in the source of our upcoming conflict what with planning on wrecking chaos in Penacony - so he thinks, "Penacony will just be another pitstop along the way [on the pilgrimage to Destruction]" (Data Bank -> Relics; The Ashblazing Grand Duke). Probably not playable.
Likewise, Stellaron Hunter Sam has to be important... I wonder how much his IPC bounty is. Elio probably told him to go to Penacony, but I wonder why Sam instead of anyone else.
Adventurine? My. IPC representation is always fun. I hope he interacts with the Trailblazers, and that we get more information about Qilpoth from him (though that's rather unlikely). During the cutscene where we fought Cocolia, we obtained Alisa Rand's lance while Qilpoth drew their hammer and seemed to draw their gaze at us. It's possible the Trailblazer is an emanator, but you could argue otherwise too. I'm looking forward to seeing what the IPC thinks about that, if the Trailblazer really is an emanator of Preservation, or Destruction, or anything at all.
Not much to say on Dr. Ratio. He'll be there.
Garden of Recollection memokeeper Black Swan... hey, I wonder if we'll get a reference to the Messenger on the Astral Express, since she's from the same organization.
Sparkle, representing the Masked Fools... I love the Masked Fools, they're so goofy. She's probably here to have a good time, shake up chaos, and be on her way.
Acheron from the Galaxy Rangers? We'll get to see more from another side of Lan's followers.
A bunch of the upcoming characters look interesting. I'm not invested in most of the characters, mainly because their fits look... super uncomfortable. That's a me thing, I don't care about most characters unless their lore piques my interest or I vibe with their outfits. Characters I am interested in, however, and expect to be playable:
I'm partial to Ruan Mei, she seems promising! I do wish that she wore a lab coat, she would absolutely pull it off and it would bring out the scientist part of her character more. (Nobody in this universe seems to care about lab safety with how much skin some of these characters show.)
Sunday for sure. His personality is serving... something. I don't know, I like his voice though. And the wings!
Aventurine looks cute... that's about it. His interaction with Topaz strike me as kinda funny. I want to see more from IPC coworkers, especially when Diamond gets introduced in more depth.
Sam, because mechas go hard, and I want to collect all the Stellaron Hunters.
For the same reason, I'm going to grab Elio (and Kafka on her rerun; skipped for Blade and I already had Jing Yuan to fill the same meta-niche).
Screwllum is a maybe. He's a mecha, but his personality is kinda ehhh for me.
Dr. Ratio! I'm glad he's going to be free. I'm not a fan of the right side of his outfit or his animations and wouldn't feel very happy pulling for him even though I want him. They picked an odd place to show skin and it doesn't really mesh well with the rest of his design. His attack animations are funny but rather boring and there's not much going on. As a character, I genuinely love how obnoxious he sounds. Judging by the 1.6 livestream he and Herta have Beef(TM) for sure... or that might be a Genius Society vs Intelligentsia Guild thing. Either way, it's bound to be interesting.
Misha's cute. His hair looks cute. I hope his personality will be cute, too.
Maybe Robin, if her dress doesn't look too plain. She's a superstar and she'll be singing for us at the festival! Perhaps we'll get a dedicated cut scene, music video, and song sung by her.
They're mostly guys. That's within my expectations. I don't have much investment in a lot of the female characters so far, to be honest. I like March (it's hard not to care about her), the Stellaron Hunter girls, Sushang and Bailu, and everyone else is fine. They're there, they help flesh out the world, but I'm not particularly attached to any of them. I guess you could say the same thing about a substantial portion of the cast in general...
Anyways, these are my thoughts. Looking forward to version 1.6 and hope everyone wins their 50/50s!

my experience of playing hsr in chinese text has so far been along the lines of:
*in herta space station and belobog* yeah there are some game-specific nouns that i have to learn but i mostly understand everything. guess the 12 years of chinese education worked
*in xianzhou luofu* im not good enough at idioms for this. why are there poetry robots. i've literally never seen this word in my life and when i asked my chinese friend she didn't know either. upon searching it's just a very obscure word for "valley"

HEADCANON. OLD FRIENDS AND THEIR BIRTHDAYS.
jing yuan is someone who celebrates birthdays, those around him, especially and is generous and thoughtful with buying them gifts. even after the cloud quintet disbanded, jing yuan continues to buy birthday presents for them. it helps him to stay on the course of what he has to do, it reminds him of his final duty as their comrade. but also in memory of their roles in the crisis that is still occurring and needs to be resolved before everything can end for good.
within a secret location at his abode, jing yuan has four storage room dedicated to the birthday presents he kept for them. and considering how much time have passed, you can assume it's pretty much plentiful.
for yingxing: ornate hairpins and hair accessories crafted by new talents
for dan feng: rich literature and poetry released after his exile
for jingliu: records of the swordstyle that evolved over time
for baiheng: exquisite rice wine and bolts of silk fabric for festive periods
now what happens to those storage rooms once he's resigned and departed from luofu himself ? well, it's free to be explored by anyone, dear trailblazer. if you wish some of it, best is to ask the recipient of those gifts since it's theirs but if you want to take it for yourself, jing yuan himself wouldn't mind either.

The elegant calligraphy brushstrokes sat behind the protective glass. So invested in reading the poetry, Jing Yuan didn't look up until he heard the footsteps approaching stop.
"Dan Heng!" a smile lit up on his face. "Glad you were interested in coming."
There weren't many people in the museum right now either, so it was a perfect day to visit. The general had pitched the idea to Dan Heng to learn more about the Xianzhou's history and culture next time he was on the Luofu if he wanted. There were artifacts, writing, art, and more from as far back as the Xianzhou written history could go, plenty to help one get better acquainted with the culture. Especially someone who never got the chance to.
"Which area would you like to start with? There's technology, art, military history, culture, and mythology."

VERY stressed ab my history exam next week tho. 7 am on monday. and im a bit sick rn so i have less energy to study. but eh ill be fine, i just wanna pass. AND RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT IM SO OBSESSED WITH IT ACTUALLY......... maaaaaay or may not have bought physical versions for the first two novels three days after getting into the series akdlkdf. luckily it was near my birthday so my mom decided to fund them for me. BUT AHHHH IT IS SO GOOD i keep meaning to read the 3rd novel but ah..... so busy recently.........

Jing Yuan was a terrible drunk.
This was a truth that Dan Heng had come to discover over the course of several visits to the Luofu, starting immediately after his exile had been revoked.
At first, he had intended on keeping his distance from his past home, out of respect for the residents and his own muddled memories, but he couldn't help his curiosity for the Luofu and the general who had both taken him away and brought him back to there. The archivist in him simply wanted to log as much as possible - given the private nature of the Xianzhou Alliance, much information about each respective ship was kept secret from the rest of the world and thus wasn't as readily available as some other planets. That same private nature meant that there was some careful treading he would have to do - his own past life meant that he was already on some thin ice with some groups, the last thing he wanted to do was push the boundaries in some other violation that would ruin the peace granted to him with Jing Yuan's steadfast work.
On the matter of Jing Yuan then, didn't that mean that the other was the best person to consult with on these sort of matters? The laws of the Xianzhou Alliance were long and complicated sometimes and while he didn't mind reading the texts, it was always easier to navigate through them with someone who was more familiar. Naturally, if the other was busy or had other affairs to attend to, he wouldn't bother him - but Jing Yuan had so readily agreed to help him out that Dan Heng hadn't had a moment to think that he was being a nuisance.
It began with stops to the office of Divine Foresight whenever he was there, to meet ups at various shops and restaurants across the Luofu, and finally to visits to Jing Yuan's residence when the day's work was wrapped up. Any question of whether or not the general had any other business to attend to at any point was met with just a flippant wave of Jing Yuan's hand and another neat scroll pressed into Dan Heng's hands. It wasn't until he had blazed through one of those scrolls and sent a curious text to the other at a much later hour of the night than anticipated did he meet the Jing Yuan who would drink himself silly and then proceed to forget everything that happened the next day.
Naturally, this was just bait for Dan Heng to dangle over the general's head now. Jing Yuan was always so composed, poised almost with his smiles, his head tilts, and his little lines of poetry that wanting to get him a little off kilter was a given. Whenever the alcohol was brought out during their evening meetings, his voice would catch a teasing edge more than easily, amusement glimmering in his eyes as he spoke.
"Are you sure you won't overdo it this time?"
And when Jing Yuan would ruefully sling an arm around his shoulders (done so only when Dan Heng had noted just how physically affectionate the general wanted to be at times and expressed how he didn't mind if the other touched him) before asking for the umpteenth time about what exactly he had done that one time, the only answer he would receive was the vidyadhara's laughter.
