Although, honestly, if you have no morals, straight up shooting every person you suspect is Superman wouldn't be ineffective..

When Batman V’d Superman for the first time…
A classic story of large men in tight spandex slapping each other with allegedly dangerous but harmless in practice objects in an attempt to prove their masculine superiority to the other.

World's Finest Comics #95 "The Battle of the Super-Heroes!" (1958)
Context: Aliens were arguing about who was the better hero, so they gave Batman superpowers and zapped them both with the "Mean Ray" so they'd fight. I might post the whole thing.

Action Comics #118 "The Execution of Clark Kent!" (1948)
In which Clark Kent is put to the electric chair
Clark "Criminal" Kent is another common story trope in the Golden Age, and this might be my favorite version, with some excellent Shenaniganary and the balls to actually make the characters think that Clark was executed.

SUPERMAN CAN SHOOT LITTLE SUPERMEN OUT OF HIS HANDS!
Superman #125 "Superman's New Power!" (1958)
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I WAS. This issue is wildly famous for being the primo example of "Golden Age Superman does weird shit"...except...this isn't golden age, this is SILVER AGE. Which is where all of the actual weird stuff is. I had no idea this was THE ISSUE, so it was a delightfuul surprise to flip the page and Discover the magic.

The First Appearance of Kryptonite!
Also the first time he learned his origin story (in the comics)
To my recollection, Kryptonite was first invented in the radio show as an excuse for Bud Hollyer to take a break from voicing Superman, but here's the introduction within the comics- in the actual funniest way possible. Which was then followed by an actually touching story of Clark witnessing the destruction of Krypton himself and discovering his origin.

Superman #113 “Superman of the Past!” (1957)
It was used in the George Reeves show in 1952- can't recall if it was earlier elsewhere, but in that same year, he gave his name as Jor-El the 2nd.

Superman #32, "Superman's Search for Clark Kent!" (1945)
In which Superman forgor he was Clark Kent 💀
Amnesia continues to be one of my favorite tropes in these comics, and more than ever, it was a very common subject for stories in the Golden Age. This particular issue might be my favorite for showing off how kind Superman is, even when his brain has literally gotten microwaved. There's a nice bit where he helps a guy get over his insecurities about knitting as a man- a truly timeless tale.

Interestingly, this was an issue drawn by Wayne Boring before he become full time in 48ish (I think) and wasn't written by Siegel, but rather Alvin Schwartz.
