The doctor who writers were really like “oops we accidentally created the best romance of all time in a story where the alien protagonist constantly reinvents himself and who he travels with” and then to solve that they forced them into separate dimensions and made a copy of said alien protagonist to grow old with his lover so she could be happy but he himself just had to move on. whaddahell

the greatest tragedy of our time is the doctor who writers not following through on bad wolf rose tyler. oh she absorbed the time vortex and had the power of a goddess? well her alien boyfriend kissed it out of her so she’s normal now and there’s zero (0) lasting effects. BULLSHIT!!!! shout out to the fanfic writers who get it and write her physiology changing and becoming a time lord, or at the very least something not entirely human!!!! there was all that lead up to bad wolf, let her go crazy! let her have insane power!! bad wolf i love you you should have stuck around longer

Ok, so. My doctorate is in Shakespeare film adaptations, and I am fully here for this strategy. Shakespeare plays are three butt jokes standing on each other's shoulders in a trench coat, and the plays should be TREATED as such. I love this take so much.

My MA supervisor used to say that Shakespeare can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make him, and I think that this sliding scale approach works for every possible way of interacting with Shakespeare. You want Willy Shakes, the redheaded stepchild of Jay-Z and Tim Burton? You can support that with the text and contexts, and if you're NOT teaching high schoolers this, you're doing something deeply, deeply wrong. Hell, even academia recognizes this, given Douglas Lanier's Pop Shakespeare chapter and Pauline Kiernan's book, Filthy Shakespeare, which is dedicated specifically to explaining all the dirty jokes.
