I was called by a "Public Opinion Research" company....

I was called by a "Public Opinion Research" company earlier this week regarding the March 7th municipal elections for both the County and the City of #LosAngeles -- which by the way also includes the race for three (District 2, District 4 and District 6) #LAUSD board seats. I just wanted to share that if you guys don't get out and vote, LAUSD stands to be greatly fractured. In other words, the district won't be the 2nd largest k-12 school district in the country. Your favorite Teachers and their Unions won't be able to do anything to protect their livelihoods. As a product of schools in the 4th district myself, I am working on a graphic that will share my perspective on who I believe are the best candidates for the job. Just to be clear, nobody is paying me to form an opinion, I simply want to engage you all in hopes that you get out there and vote regardless of our agreement or disagreement on the candidates. However, before I produce this material, I want to ask you all just one pressing question in hopes of garnering your attention. That question is: Do you feel that LAUSD is too big and overextended? I certainly welcome any and all opinions and/or comments to learn more from past and current students produced by schools from LAUSD. Make no mistake — this is a Muslim ban. We have opened our doors to those fleeing violence and oppression for decades, by presidents on both sides of the aisle. Doing so has helped global stability and made our country stronger. We can't turn our backs on the millions of refugees who are contributing to our country and our economy. During the Holocaust, we failed to let refugees like Anne Frank into our country. We can't let history repeat itself.

What is success?

Today I turned 30.  In some circles, surviving that long is a big accomplishment.  In others, 30 is the new 20, so “rage on” they say.  I have been contemplating a lot lately about my definition of success.  By many measures, I have reached many great milestones in my lifetime.  However, those milestones do not include “financial” success, which seems to still be the bar that must be reached in order to truly be called a “successful” man. Or is it??  

Though we still search for financial freedom, I feel as if our collective definition of success has shifted greatly.

So the question still remains… what is my definition of success??  

Let’s first split up the definition of success into two categories because I believe that too often we merge and/or mix the two.

First, there is external or “social” success. External successes are those types of victories that we win in sporting contests, in academia, and in the workplace.  With social success, our peers bear witness and/or can validate our triumph, because without other people being involved, these victories couldn’t have been achieved. Secondly, there’s internal or “personal” success.  Those are the things that you achieve without competing with anyone else, just yourself.  An example can be losing weight, quitting smoking, smiling more, etc.  I believe that these kinds of personal successes are just as important if not more than external success.

In closing, I believe that we hurt ourselves when we set high goals that are difficult to reach.  Which is why we must take small steps.  So for me my definition of success has gone from swimming in gold like Mr. Scrooge to making someone smile.  You should go out and try that today.  You must remember that not everyone will be receptive to your huge grin, but if you make it genuine enough, you just might make someone’s day. Smiles are contagious.  If I can make someone smile I feel successful.  If I can hold the door open for someone, I feel successful.  Do you see this trend? I find success in helping others.  If we can shift our train of thought in this manner we will find success all around us.  

So… what’s your definition of success???
