Once upon a time, there was a duck….🦢👑🩰

July 2023. TMM might be my childhood love, but Princess Tutu might be my favorite magical girl series. I will always tell anyone to give it a watch. (subbed, I have no idea what the dubbed English sounds like. But you do you!) I’ve always wanted to write a big long gushing review about it but I’d probably want to to watch it again first, hehe….

It’s been a long time since I did such a big illustration. I looked at this drawing for far too long and started to overthink everything. I’m really feeling how little foundation my color theory has since I never really properly learned it, so I had to get a lot of help from @dyemelikeasunset for this- bless their whole heart!!! 🥺❤️

I have made prints of this, but I still need to set up an online store. I’ll let everyone know when it’s available!

Setting: If you have any nice brick buildings locally, that’s a good option. Or a cute, spooky forest. I personally would not want to get married in any “haunted” locations, but it’s up to you and you sense of adventure.

Decorations: We’re leaning on the bolder side of wedding decor here, with a heavy amount of black and pops of neon green, lavender, and sky blue. Bring in the ghosts and the goths with twisting tree branches, ravens, and bedsheet ghouls. Bring in the mad scientist vibes with neon signs, beakers, and other fantasy tech. Last, add those little touches that reference the show, like blood blossoms, space-pattern fabrics, and if you’re feeling fancy, ice sculptures.

Entertainment: If there’s any time for a dad joke contest, it is now. You might also have opportunities for people to share silly ghost stories or their goth poetry. If you’re willing to pay for a Cirque de Soleil style performance, that could be fun. Otherwise, just put on cheesy dance music and have fun with your family and friends.

Food: Throw in a cheese platter as a fun reference to Vlad and the Dairy King, and at least one food that glows, and you’re set with whatever menu you want.

Setting: If you can somehow find a quaint and colorful German-fairytale inspired village, go for it! Otherwise, getting married next to a lake, under a big oak tree, or in whimsical woods are going to be your next best options. The main ballet that inspired Princess Tutu was Swan Lake, so if you have a local pond or other swan habitat, that could be another good choice.

Decorations: Princess Tutu is an eclectic mix of several ballets and fairytales, so don’t be afraid to get eclectic with the decor. Of course you need white and black feathers for the swan and the raven. Then, mix in some antique clocks and giant industrial gears for Drosselmeyer, quills and inkwells and books for Fakir, small birds for Mytho, and as many elegant but still cute ducks as you can hide everywhere for Duck. Then, go as subtle or overt as you want for the ballet aesthetic, with tulle fabrics, ballet shoes, bouquets, musical instruments, and other ballet elements. And of course, a cat figurine for Mr. Cat.

Entertainment: If you can get a live band to play the numerous classical pieces that give Princess Tutu its signature sound, you can set your guests up to dance this magic night away. If you have any friends who are ballerinas, you might also ask if they would be willing to do a short performance. And for more youthful activities, you could do a scavenger hunt for Mytho’s heart shards.

Food: This wedding needs a vaguely European-inspired menu, with some cute French and Russian items to bring in ballet’s roots. Just don’t serve duck, and you’re pretty much good to do whatever you want.

Setting: The wonderful thing about Zelda is that you could have this wedding literally anywhere and it would work. Cathedral with stained glass windows? Temple of Time. Overgrown green forest? Lost Woods/Kokiri Forest. Grand Canyon? Gerudo Desert. Beach? Outset Island. Literally any location works for this. You could get married in a volcano! Pick somewhere that matches the feel you want for your wedding.

Decorations: Again, there are many aesthetics that fit with the Zelda series, though you’ll probably lean medieval Europe. And if you weren’t able to have you wedding at a certain location, you can still incorporate those elements, like standalone faux stained glass windows or potted pine trees. I recommend leaning into royal purple and forest green, to represent Zelda and Link and make your theming more obvious to your guests. But you could easily lean into the crystal and water aesthetic for the Zora, the snowy-feathery vibes of the Rito, the gold and jewels of the Gerudo, or the rocky-earthy decor of the Gorons. Or you could have designated sections for each aesthetic! As long as you pick a color palette and stick with it, you can get a lot of Zelda theming just out of mixing different textures and materials. Add in a Master Sword and a Hylian shield, and you can have a classy wedding that could lean more subtle or more nerdy.

Entertainment: Zelda is well known for the series’ incredible music. Don’t be afraid to not only have your guests dance the night away, but also to do “who can guess the song” trivia. If you have friends or family members who play musical instruments, you might even challenge them to play songs from the series (though you also need to think about the guests’ comfort transporting instruments). You could have a slingshot challenge, a LARP sparring area, a Korok scavenger hunt/puzzle game, and so much more! You could also do a blind raffle based on one of the series’ chest lottery games, where you put prizes in three different closed boxes and guests use tickets to vote for one they want the chance to bring home.

Food: Zelda, as far as I’m aware, is one of the easiest fandoms to find real-life versions of in-game food. There are several cookbooks dedicated to the various in-game recipes, not to mention to numerous blogs and YouTube videos where people try to create their own versions. Pick a season and try to build a themed meal around those flavors. I would like to throw in a quick promo for Aimee Wood’s Unofficial Legend of Zelda Cookbook, which I backed on Kickstarter a couple years ago. It’s an incredibly well designed cookbook, with most recipes having some kind of vegan or gluten-free options, and there’s a sections for themed cocktails, which can be made either alcoholic or non-alcoholic. I still make milk tea from Aimee’s recipe every-time I have friends over.

Overall, Zelda is a series about being silly and having a classic adventure. Think about what makes you happy, and incorporate the elements that are important to you and your spouse.

Setting: If you can find a mountain or cliffside venue, you can recreate that beautiful moment from the end of the game where everyone is freed from the Underground. Your next best option is using a clearing in the middle of a pine forrest.

Decorations: If you can divide the space into distinct areas, you can use different decor to create the specific vibes of the Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and New Home. I definitely recommend a variety of flowers and light fixtures, including twinkling star lights, flowing lava lamps, and monochrome lanterns. You’re also going to want to incorporate heart symbolism, more than with any other wedding.

Entertainment: Put your guests to the test with a Pun Contest! Have them solve silly puzzles! Invite them to gaze at the stars! There’s so many fun things you can pull from the games to entertain your guests.

Food: Spaghetti, hot dogs, fancy steak dinner - Undertale actually features a wide range of food you can chose from. While you can do themed cocktails, cute individual desserts are going to steal the show. You can decorate your buffet table like the Spider Bakesale and incorporate so many pun names for candy and other treats.

Just like Undertale, the vibe of this wedding is the power of friendship and love, with some campy joy of life thrown in.
