Ever feel inspired by someone whom you never thought in a million trillion years you would be inspired by? Well here is an example of that. I only really like Bowie in his Labyrinth iteration— lol! I remember having a crush on him — “the Goblin King”— when I was younger. Anyway, here he is as Ziggy Stardust a “ fictional androgynous and bisexual rock star who is sent to Earth as a saviour before an impending apocalyptic disaster.” (Wiki) I have been fascinated with vintage manga covers and the retro aesthetics of the 70’s and 80’s and I wanted to create an 80’s interpretation of Ziggy Stardust. This required A LOT of experimentation but I think I’m satisfied with the end result. . . . I recently rewatched the movie “12 years a slave” adapted from the book by the same name. The abridged version of the story (which is a true story) is about a man named Solomon Northup who was a free black man during antebellum times living in New York City. Through a series of tragic events he ends up being abducted and sold into slavery. He eventually is emancipated but only after 12 years of experiencing the horrors of slavery firsthand. I wanted to challenge myself by creating a faux book cover for this incredible work. The challenge being going through the conceptual work, research, continuous rough drafts, and remaining dedicated. Another challenge being keeping myself immersed in the suffering that I have beheld and read read about so that I could be conveyed in my work. I normally don’t spend more than a few/several hours on a piece because I have a very short attention span, so this was very different for me. I asked the objective opinions of those around me and the encouraged me to push further. So I did, somewhat reluctantly. My inclination is to create beautiful things, beautiful scenes. But there is nothing even remotely beautiful about slavery—I wanted to convey that: the grittiness, the visceral nature of it that I could ONLY imagine. I don’t want to over explain my final version; I hope that it provokes thought and that you can place your own interpretation upon it.
