Hope your day's going well! What are your top 5 favorite side characters?

My day is going good! (or was? It's 0102h right now, so I suppose it's tomorrow already. I worked the evening shift and got home late at night, haha). Sorry it took me so long to get to answering!! Thank you for sending this ask :) (based on this post)

Since media and franchise weren't specified, I will just be doing an overall Top 5 💜💜 I do have some criteria for myself that I've established as to what I consider a "side character", and that is characters who are not the main protagonist, who the audience does not know as much about as they do the main character, and who do not have a major/central arc within the story/plot that is focused on them. They may be supporting or background characters on either side of the main conflict, or hardly involved in the conflict at all. Keeping all this in mind; this list is still subjective to what I consider to be a side character, so some people may have different opinions :)

Top 5 Favourite Side Characters:

The Cabbage Vendor from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I love this man so much. The utter devastation when he cries "My cabbages!" is so top tier. He is literally just trying to make a living, and these damn teens keep messing up his produce. Honestly, do not even blame him for writing the "bad" adaptation of the avatar's adventures to be performed by the Fire Island Players; if teens continuously messed up my merchandise and destroyed my produce with their ridiculous fights about the "fate of the world" 🙄🙄🙄 I would try and make a buck off of it, too. Lol.

2. Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach. Hmm, it's been a while since I talked about Kenpachi...and that's not ok! Let's rectify it. The man has a one-track mind; all he cares about is fight, fight fight. Being the strongest. Etc. But despite all that, he cares for Yachiru who is basically a child, he has the unwavering respect of Squad 11, he refuses to fight/pick on people weaker than him...and he's so strong🥰🥰 He would be able to pick me up one-handed, I guarantee. Delightful. I absolutely love Kenpachi!

3. Keeping on the Bleach theme, next is Rangiku Matsumoto! I really love her character. She comes across really ditzy and as if she relies a lot on her looks and party-like attitude. However, there are also moments where she's serious and thoughtful and deep; just enough moments to have me craving more. I really enjoy her character, and I think more could be done with her. Her ditzy personality seems to be more of a cover-up, to keep people unaware and lull them into a false sense of security. I know she is important to the Bleach story, and yet I feel like she was not given as much of a limelight as some of the others. I dunno, I just really cherish her in my heart. I actually have lots I want to write in terms of fanfiction for delving into her character. Maybe someday I will get around to putting it all down and posting it, ahaha.

4. Divus Crewel from Twisted Wonderland. I would marry him.

5. Amaimon from Blue Exorcist. Because, who doesn't love a homicidal maniacal demon? :D It was honestly quite close between Amaimon and Floyd Leech for the number 5 spot, but if I'm being honest: Amaimon was in my heart first, and he's just a bit more intense with his actions than Floyd (and I love that so much). To be honest, though, he and Floyd are like, same guy in a different font...lol.

Honourable mentions: Floyd Leech (Twisted Wonderland), Jade Leech (Twisted Wonderland), Ruggie Bucchi (Twisted wonderland), Usagi (Juuni Taisen/Zodiac Wars), Soifon (Bleach), Brelyna Maryon (Skyrim), Jane Bennet (Pride and Prejudice), Viktor Licht (Fire Force), Maki Oze (Fire Force)

(If you think there's a character who you assumed would be on my list or at least an honourable mention, but they're not there...it's likely because I consider them to be a main character by my standards 💜)

My Top Five Books

5. What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum Ucci

I had to go with a childhood book to start this list. What I like about this story is the overall message underneath it: be kind to strangers and don't judge others for how they appear/look. Yes, there is a bit of wish-fulfillment in terms of "bad karma" happening to the awful people at the end but I can live with it.

I also love how Lani Garver can be read as a gender-fluid/non-binary characters, though never outright stated due to the time period of publishing.

Overall, this story holds a special place in my heart and is an easy reread if I'm feeling nostalgic.

4. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

I don't want to talk about this book too much due to spoilers, but if you enjoy murder mysteries and time loops, this book is for you. I highly recommend this book as well as the author's other book The Devil and the Dark Water.

3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

My favourite part about this book are the descriptions. I am in love with how Morgenstern vividly describes the aesthetic of the setting, characters, and world around them. The story's entire premise is amazing too. I highly recommend checking it out!

2. The King of Infinite Spaces by Lyndsay Faye

I think this story is the one that give me my Literature Nerd credit as it's a modern retelling of Hamlet. I am in love with this story and how the author recreates (yet still retains) the spirit and characterization of the play/characters.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

This is tumblr. Is there anything about this book I can say that hasn't already been said here? I can't go five meters away from a Tragic Gay Couple in media without seeing a quote from this novel edited along side.

I cannot tell you how every single time I read this, a bubbling of emotions fills me up: happiness, elation, love, bitterness, sorrow, overwhelming melancholy, all wrapped into one package. This novel isn't just a retelling of a Greek myth: it's a classic. If you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favour and do it.

Hey thanks for the ask! (based on this post)

I won't be getting too technical with the definition of "vegetable"; basically if I would consider it a vegetable or would include it on a 'veggie platter', I will consider it eligible for the list. Hope that makes sense to everyone!💜💜

My top 5 vegetables:

Tomatoes. I know they aren't technically one, but I would include them in a veggie platter, so they are counting. They're my favourite! I love how many different flavours there are and the different sizes make it perfect for snacks or adding to my cooking. 10/10 in my books :)

Daikon. I love this radish so much. I love the subtle sweetness to it when it's cooked and it mixes so well with other veggies! Shout-out to @kimium for cooking it for me for the first time in my life all those years ago (holy crap it's been years...lol).

And speaking of veggies I have enjoyed with Kim, I gotta say the next one is Bok Choy. Love the leafy green vegetables, and it is so good added to a stir fry with chicken and rice!

Spaghetti Squash. There's so much you can do with spaghetti squash; from cheesy to tomato sauces, to barbecue chicken, you can just mix it with so many things and it tastes great! I really love making it, and I am super proud to say that my mother (who used to dislike squashes) told me that my cooking got her to actually enjoy spaghetti squash! 🥰

Butternut squash. This one, I just like eating cooked with a little olive oil and salt and pepper to season. It has such a lovely flavour and I really love having it in the autumn time! Makes me very happy!!

Honourable mentions: spinach, cucumbers, pickled carrots.

Bonus (because I felt like it)

Least favourite vegetable ever: cauliflower. It is the Devil incarnate.
