I was sent out on a butterfly count assignment for the C-J a few weeks ago. Which is funny because I really really dislike butterflies. It all stems back to that Spongebob episode about Wormy that I watched when I was a kid...
Anyway, I survived! This was a really tough shoot because it was high noon and the sun was so harsh, but I think I made it work okay. Maybe butterflies aren’t so bad after all? Let me know what you think!

SUMMER BLOG PT. 1
Hey y’all -
I have just finished my fourth week here at the C-J! Dang, time flies. It definitely took a minute to get used to shooting stills again. I’m still getting used to it actually. But while some days I feel like I haven’t produced anything even remotely good, I’ve had a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying getting to know this city. In other good news, I made it back to work from assignment the other day without GPS! I’m very proud of that one.
This past week was very much dominated by Ali’s passing, so that will be a separate blog post. But for now take a look at some of the things I’ve been shooting these past few weeks!

1 - Hannah Clark, 8, tests out an air rifle for the first time during the NRA’s Convention Opening Day in Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday, May 19. It is her first time at an NRA Convention.
2 - Sgt. Smith, 34, shares a moment with his wife, Megan Smith, 26, while waiting behind the stage curtains to surprise their son at his kindergarten graduation ceremony at Alex R. Kennedy Elementary. “It’s an emotional day for sure,” Sgt. Smith said.
3 - Shirley Wheeler, 69, from the Highlands, cast her vote for the Democratic Primary at Atherton High School on May 17, 2016.
4 - Kelvin Richardson, a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Louisville, Kentucky, gathers the mail from the back of his truck before completing his “loop” on Tuesday, May 31. “I’d rather see a person happy with a piece of mail than to let them say they’re expecting something and I don’t have it,” Richardson said.
5 - Kelvin Richardson is a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Louisville, Kentucky. He has been bitten by a dog once in his career, but he says that doesn’t scare him. “Dogs are like people, you just gotta know how to approach them,” Richardson said. “They keep you company for more than just protection… and they read you like you wouldn’t believe.” Richardson has five dogs at home.
6 - Students at Minor Daniels Academy watch Mario Domingo, an 8th grade student, during a robotics camp competition to see what team’s “vehicle” could go the farthest. The students had to make an air-powered vehicle out of paper cups, tape, construction paper and popsicle sticks. Since the vehicles had to be “air-powered”, many students opted to push the vehicle across the floor using only their breath.
7 - Rodolfo Bernal, from Goshen, Kentucky, has been a hobbyist beekeeper for seven years. “It requires a lot of sweat and a lot of dedication,” Bernal said. “When they are happy, I am happy.”
8 - Colin Karsner, 4, from Louisville, Kentucky, looks in awe at the lego displays at the Lego KidsFest in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, June 3.
9 - Landscapers Drew Guillaume (left) and Konrad Kraft (right) finish up the final touches as they finish raking in mulch for the new planters at Big Four Bridge on May 17, 2016.
10 - Children of all ages enjoyed the “lego pit” at the Lego KidsFest in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, June 3. The event will be held at the Kentucky Expo Center until Sunday.

I had my first picture story published in the paper a couple weeks ago. It was a really fun story to shoot - I was assigned to Immaculata Classical Academy, a private school that specializes in inclusive education for children with Down syndrome. I really enjoyed hanging out with these kids - they were a bundle of joy and I was honestly sad that it was only a two hour assignment. Here are the images that came from that afternoon. Not all these pictures were published, but these were my favorites. Comments/critique is always appreciated! You can view the published story here: http://cjky.it/1X1gK9c

1 - Sister Caryn Crush gets her preschool class ready for mass on the last day of classes at Immaculata Classical Academy in Louisville, Kentucky.
2 - Pictures from the year hang up on the wall of Sister Caryn Crush's preschool classroom at Immaculata Classical Academy. Crush said her favorite part of the job is seeing the children's success. "Seeing a kids joy when they read for the first time and write their name for the first time is so rewarding," Crush said.
3 - Sister Caryn Crush escorts her preschool class, which is a mix of typical and non-typical students, to Mass as it rains around them.
4 - Sister Caryn Crush's preschool class is greeted and hurried in to church for Mass by the older students of Immaculate Classical Academy.
5 - Osa Cameron, 6, listens during Mass on the last day of classes at Immaculata Classical Academy. Her name was chosen because it means "God's blessing", according to her grandfather Frank Cameron. "[She] wouldn't be where she is today without this school," Cameron said.
7 - One of the typical students in Sister Caryn Crush’s preschool class listens during Mass on May 26, 2016.
8 - Sister Caryn Crush cradles Lola Rosenbaum, 6, due to Rosenbaum moving around too much during Mass. "It's very busy and exhausting and rewarding," Crush said of her work at the school. "They keep you on your toes."
9 - Sister Caryn Crush keeps an eye on her students at Mass. Lola Rosenbaum, 6 (left), Max Michalak, 4 (middle), and Osa Cameron, 6 (right), all have Down syndrome. Crush greatly enjoys her work with non-typical children. "They teach you to celebrate the small things," Crush said. "They are genuine... In a way, they are almost more god-like. You can see the beauty and perfection in each one of them."
10 - Sister Caryn Crush leads her class back to the school building after Mass to get them ready to go home for summer break. Crush has been a part of the school since it first opened. She says she hopes to bring in a non-typical sister into the community someday.

I just started at the C-J, and one of my first assignments was to shoot a food spread. I was so nervous!
This was first food shoot since Ms. A’s lighting class forever ago. I’m pretty happy with the results except I didn’t think to take the straw out! Things that always come up in the editing for 200, please.
I’ll be making a few more blog posts with other C-J stuff soon I promise!

After spending 20 years in a refugee camp in Thailand, a Karenni family from Myanmar starts a new life in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
I followed this family on and off for a couple months as they adjusted to their new home in the U.S. as part of a refugee project with my photojournalism class. For my final picture story, I ended up focusing on Soe Reh, 19, and Pray Moe, 24, both of whom are the oldest children in the family in the U.S. (the eldest son stayed behind in Thailand) but went down two distinct and separate paths after their arrival to Bowling Green.
This was one of the most difficult picture stories I’ve ever had the pleasure to shoot. And it was a pleasure, and I’m very thankful to this family for allowing me into their lives and letting a random American girl be their own personal fly-on-the-wall. Not being able to communicate with them was extremely difficult though. I couldn’t ask them simple questions like, “What is this dish?” or “What are your plans for tomorrow?” I mean I could, but I would only get very simple answers in return. So thanks Jen Kash and Steve Anderson for being really helpful in that regard! It was a great experience for all of us, I hope. It certainly was for me.
These are some pictures that didn’t make the cut into my final edit for my story, but I think they are telling all the same. I hope to keep in touch with this wonderful family as they grow, learn English, and become citizens.
You can see the final edit of the story on my website here. As always, please give feedback. Thanks!
