I've just started The Victims Game on Netflix (which features a detective with Aspergers) and I'm only 3 minutes in but I've had a lightbulb moment which I needed to share.
In the scene where Fang Yi-Jen is talking with their teacher and the teacher remarks that he's alone again. That's a gut punch.
It also perfectly mimics my experience in high school and university with undiagnosed ADHD. The sheer isolation you are put in by your peers. Almost as if you're an alien. Sub-human to them. It's almost like they knew long before I did.
I don't see many accounts talking about that here. About how neuro divergent kids are isolated and shunned by their peers for not being the same. I lived my high school years in isolation because "I was the weird kid". I was the kid who overshared. I was the kid who got too excited when her favourite tea her returned after bring sacked. I was the kid who was too emotional when kids would hide my things. I was the kid who was hiding something because I wore tights all throughout the year because I didn't like the feeling of the school seats on my skin. I was the kid who adored the lessons people hated. What would have been a prime learning phase to learn about social ques, expectations and how to connect with people instead left me hating myself because I believed I could never connect with people. That there was something innately wrong with me and that all the people who left me was my fault.
I don't think I ever got the experience of being a socially normal teenager and I hate it.
Idk rant over I guess.

So a lot of aspiring authors including me are scared about writing or publishing our works because
We feel its not going to be good, noones going to read it or everyone is going to hate it.
Scared because it might be seen as too similar or we've copied someone's else's work.
Well first of all, likeness is subjective. Not everyone is going to love it but not everyone is going to hate it. Typical "bad" stories like 50 Shades of Grey still have a huge fan following.
In terms of copying. Nothing is original any more. EVERYTHING IS COPIED. As Austin Kleon writes "Nothing is original" "All creative works build on what came before"
But allow me to give an example.
Let's say you want to write a story about zombies?
Pick your first inspiration. Let's say it's The Walking Dead. Pick your idea to steal. Let's say it's going to be Negan and his group and through this 'steal' you create a similar group of depraved individuals.
That's steal 1.
Pick your 2nd inspiration. Let's say it's All of Us Are Dead. Let's say you want it set in a high school.
That's steal 2.
Pick your 3rd inspiration. Z-Nation. Let's say it's going to be all the mutated types of zombie.
That's steal 3.
Pick your 4th inspiration. Let's say it's Cockneys vs Zombies and you want the group rescuing their grandparents from their care home.
That's steal 4.
Pick your 5th inspiration. Let's say it's Train to Busan. The idea of the group trapped on a train filled with zombies.
That's steal 5.
Pick your 6th inspiration. Let's say it's Dawn of the Dead and you like the idea of a heavily pregnant woman getting infected, she becomes sick and then gives birth.
That's steal 6.
Combine them all together and make a rough premise.
A bunch of high schoolers in the middle of a zombie apocalypse set out to rescue their grandparents from their care home battling a depraved lawless group and mutant zombies along the way. Eventually making it out of the school and stealing a train, they race across the city taking in a pregnant woman who draws suspicion.
See here. You've stolen ideas from different media's but through doing that you've created a story entirely different from the media you've referenced.
In summary, steal what you love and accept whilst not everyone will love your work, it will appeal to someone.

I need a horror movie where one character has over the top reactions to the littlest of things, another character is just 100% sarcastic about every little thing but takes nothing seriously and the 3rd character is both lonely and thirsty af.
Character A seeing a ghost: "I'M GOING TO DIE, AHHHHHH NOOOOO STOP STOP PLEASE"
Character B seeing the same ghost: "I will bitch slap you to the next century"
Character C seeing the ghost: "I'd smash"

Lee Yoo-mi is an absolutely marvellous actress because the level of hatred I felt for Lee Na-yeon was more than any character in a k-series I've watched so far.
Fun Fact: On Villians Wiki, her "heinous act" actually is listed as a hate crime.

What I love about movie Lorraine and Ed is the fact that it's one of the few movie relationships I've ever seen where there is neither a power imbalance nor the sexualisation of one or both partners.
It would be so easy to create a power imbalance with the movies. Either with Ed being a man (because the movies are set way back in time where men were still the dominant ones) or because of Lorraine's gift and her being "the chosen one" concept. But this doesn't happen.
Neither of them are sexualised in the movie either by others, their partners or their costumes. Everything is modest and respectful. It would have been easy to do this too but they didn't.
In the movie series, both partners see the other as equal and both are madly in love with one another. (Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It shows this the most I think)
Ed and Lorraine Warren (as portrayed by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) is the most wholesome, respectful and equal relationship I've ever seen in media. It is the true telling of relationship goals...
And to think this all came from a freaking horror franchise. Not a romance, comedy or action but a HORROR.
I don't care that the real Lorraine and Ed had a more complicated love story, that Ed cheated on Lorraine several times, the movie version will forever be my OTP and how high my standards will always be in love.
