hello tumblr people who read books originally written in languages other than english, i have a request
i have to write a book review for my reading in translation module at the end of november and i’m trying to find a book to use for it. i’ve not (to my knowledge) read any books that have been translated to english from another language - besides one i also read in its original spanish but i don’t wanna use that for this - so i have literally no ideas.
basically i’m looking for book recs, it’s a translation to english i’ll need to use but if you don’t know whether it’s been translated that’s fine i can easily find out myself :) thank you to anyone who helps! <3

have suddenly been filled with a burning desire to reread the old books i loved as a child (a little princess - that one above all -, the secret garden, pollyanna...) and also hetty feather (largely bc i wanna see what i think of it now as an adult who knows more about that era than i did at the time, i have no memory of how accurate/inaccurate it is)

‘For shame, Heathcliff!’ said I. ‘It is for God to punish wicked people; we should learn to forgive.’
‘No, God won’t have the satisfaction that I shall,’ he returned. ‘I only wish I knew the best way! Let me alone, and I’ll plan it out: while I’m thinking of that, I don’t feel pain.’
reading wuthering heights for the first time and i just love this bit

heathcliff saying "when would you catch me wanting what catherine had wanted?" is so funny and slightly heartbreaking because after believing that cathy prefers/enjoys/likes the company of edgar linton he immediately says that "i wish i had light hair and a fair skin, and was dressed, and behaved as well, and had a chance of being as rich as he will be!"

Jane Austen really said ‘I respect the “I can fix him” movement but that’s just not me. He’ll fix himself if knows what’s good for him’ and that’s why her works are still calling the shots today.

what else was intimacy if not the memorisation of her thoughts, her dreams, her fears?

We can’t help clinging to our origins. The past always seems more ordered. It always seems clearer, more straightforward, easier to understand. We have a craving for it, that sense of simplicity, but only an idiot would ever choose the past, because our perception of it is false—it was never that the world was simple. Just that in retrospect it could be known, and therefore understood.

i finished thirteen storeys last night! very much enjoyed it for the story but also loved how pretty much every chapter there was a nice surprise of another queer character. i really don’t come across enough characters who are just. casually queer. like it doesn’t matter and it might not even be mentioned more than once or twice they just. are. because that is in fact how we exist in real life most of the time! and it was lovely to get so much of that

struggling to fully appreciate the horror in the A Stubborn Stain chapter of Thirteen Storeys because all i can think about is Alex saying the Corruption’s a power you can kick. just imagining him in Leon’s position just absolutely kicking the shit out of his apartment wall😭

thinking about dead poets society saying “Medicine, law, business, engineering. These are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love! These are what we stay alive for” and the invisible life of addie larue saying “She can go without food (she will not wither). She can go without heat (the cold will not kill her). But a life without art, without wonder, without beautiful things—she would go mad. She has gone mad.”
