Hello hello hello!
I’m sure there are some of you who don’t want to hear this… but I’m logging off. Might just be for now, I might be back later, I don’t know. But this app, as wonderful as the people I’ve met on it are, is taking too much of my time.
For those of you who are hoping I’ll stay to finish If I Should Stay, I’m sorry to disappoint. I hope you have the best time imagining the ending you want to see.
So this is me… signing off. 🫡

Someone help because I don’t have nearly the legal jargon knowledge to turn this into the fic it could be.
“Nancy,” Eddie gasps into the receiver as soon as she answers. “I need a huge favor. Like, huge.”
Nancy hums. “What’s up?”
“I need you to expose the Harrington Firm.”
“For?”
“Uh. Fraud? Extortion?”
“Ah.” She chuckles lightly and says the one thing he’s never heard her say before. “No can do, Eddie, sorry.”
“What?” His brain helpfully supplies, you kick Miette? He ignores his brain.
“I can’t expose what’s not there, Eddie. Listen, I’ve gotta go, Robin just came in with an urgent look on her face, but I’ll call you later, okay? We’ll do lunch sometime!”
And without another word, she hangs up, leaving Eddie’s brain buzzing along with the dial tone in his ear.
Can’t expose what’s not there, she said. Which means-
Oh, no.
She doesn’t know.
Eddie rolls his shoulders and nods decisively to himself. She won’t do it? Fine. He’ll do it himself.

Might just be me, and I encourage other authors to join in on the discussion, but I do reread my posted fics. Not to make sure they’re up to snuff; simply because I enjoy them. I like seeing how far I’ve come in my writing journey (which is why I don’t delete any of my fics either, but that’s a separate thought) and usually it’s been long enough since I’ve read them that I find something that has me going “oh yeah, I forgot that was in there!”
i have a question for fanfic authors.
do any of you reread your published fics to make sure that they still make sense/are good enough to stay up? or do i just have ocd?

Why you should write that AO3 comment:
Hello! I am an AO3 author and professional fandom dipshit. This is an "essay" on why you should leave that comment on the fanfic you just read.
Table of Contents:
"Commenting is too much effort!"
"I don't know what to write!"
Do you want more fanfic?
Fan creators are human beings, not AI content generators.
You can count it as charity work on your metaphysical taxes.
"Commenting is too much effort!"
Yes, writing a comment takes energy. I'm an introvert, I get that. I have two counter arguments to this point.
AO3 comments are not the SAT:
Tumblr media
This is a comment from my latest fic, Quantum Entangled.
Three words and a heart. It requires zero consideration, it isn't specific to the fic, it's something you could copy-paste, even. A comment like this is better than nothing. I'll let my reply from AO3 explain why:
"You know what, I appreciate this way more than you'd probably expect. The temptation to lurk is a strong one, both for social anxiety reasons and internet content-consumption culture reasons. But when people lurk, I can't tell that they've enjoyed the story. The more people that lurk instead of interacting, the more I assume that my work wasn't good enough, irrespective of the reader's actual feelings. So this was a very welcome comment to read. Thank you for indicating your enjoyment. I will endeavour to write more stuff for you to lurk on in the future. :)"
A comment like this, one that is as thoughtless and low effort as possible, is still a comment. Something that denotes a reader's interest. Because, and I can't be clear enough about this, I HAVE NO OTHER WAY OF KNOWING THAT YOU LIKED IT. Kudos and comments are my only window into the reader's experience.
Sure, I'd love more detailed and thorough comments on my work, but, if that expectation is the thing that's going to stop you from commenting at all, I'd prefer the bland copy-paste appreciation.
Onto my second argument.
Do you know what also takes effort? WRITING THE DAMN FIC:
You do not get to complain about being forced to type a congratulatory handful of words after reading that 200k slow-burn fantasy au. Do you know how many hours went into that thing? Do you? Because I can guarantee that it was A LOT. All that writers are asking for is a single emoji. A kudos, at the very least. Consider the effort that went into the creation that you've just experienced and give just a thimble full of it back.
Authors lay out a feast for you to devour. They're only requesting a "thank you".
"I don't know what to write!"
Like in the previous example, an AO3 comment can be as simple as three words saying that you appreciated it. Just an acknowledgement that you were there. It doesn't have to be fancy.
But if you want fancy...?
Tumblr media
Here's one of my comments, from Tishae's Better Together.
Let me break it down for you.
"Stunning. This au is so well developed. I love how you managed to maintain tension after the point that they discover that their feelings are requited. This was brilliantly paced, and the action (esp the ending) was so engaging."
The comment opens with appreciation. (Think of it as a sandwich with love as the bread. It starts and ends with my enjoyment.)
There are specific details about what I liked.
"If I may ask, what was the crime that the Metatron committed? Maybe I'm bad at reading between the lines or maybe I missed something, but I'm really curious as to what dirt they have on him. Victimless? Bad enough for imprisonment, but not so morally reprehensible as to make Anathema reveal it? Did he embezzle? That's all I can really think of."
Continues with a specific question about the story and plot.
Shows that I was critically engaged and actively considering the story.
You don't have to have questions about every fic that you read, but don't be afraid to ask them if you do. I love it when people ask me about my work.
"Thank you for the delicious food. I honestly thought that you were going to have Crowley's final look be something in grey (black and white being the theme of the show, metaphorically representing separation/binary, so Aziraphale was uncomfortable with it due to the implications. Grey, symbolising unity/shades of grey as an idiom, would then be the biggest middle finger to the Metatron) but I do really like what you came up with."
Gratitude.
Thoughts about how I read the plot. (This is something I particularly love to read as an author. Please tell me what's going on in that funky lil' brain of yours!!)
"I'm hoping this comment provides plenty of dopamine. If the task activation and instant gratification parts of your brain light up, you might be more likely to write GO content again. Love your work, thanks for sharing it. I hope you gain 3 inches of metaphorical dick length. Please keep writing."
Encouragement to keep writing. (This is the best way to ensure that creators remain in the fandom)
A funny comment to sign off.
Now that you know what to comment, let's start on the real reasons why you should.
Do you want more fanfic?
Fun fact! Fanfictious Authoria are a species that sustain themselves entirely on a diet of brain worms, unfinished WIPs, and kudos. As one of the three fundamental food groups, removing kudos from the fandom ecosystem causes a complete collapse of the natural order. In times of unprecedented scarcity, entire populations of Fanfictious Authoria can die out completely. This means that the production of fanfiction, in that particular region of fandom, stops entirely, often causing major ecological damage, and the subsequent deaths of fan species in the same genus. (Like the Fanfictious Artia, or the Fanfictious Editour, both of which subsist on fanfiction based diets to survive.)
In conservation efforts, experts are imploring readers to donate kudos and comments toward any fandom region that they want to stay alive.
But I digress.
When I want more content, I tell the author. Ask and you shall receive; it's the best way to convince an author/artist to make more.
Tumblr media
My comment on @mrghostrat's And They Were Streamers
You liked it? Then COMMENT! Not for the author's sake, but for your own. You want to see the ending of a WIP? Well, it'd be a terrible shame if the author gave up on it because they thought no one was reading... They don't know that you enjoy their work until you TELL THEM. They're not psychic, you have to help them hear you. Commenting on the things you like influences the creators of said things to attribute the act of making content (and, notably, making the type of content that specifically appeals to you) with the dopamine hit of reading your reaction. Treat them like Pavlov's dogs. Ring the kudos-bell.
Fan creators are human beings, not AI content generators.
They have real human feelings and real human egos. The contemporary attitude towards media engagement is skewed towards algorithmic, instant, and uncritical consumption. This is pumping straight gasoline into the beautiful lakes of our fandom ecosystem. Fandom cannot afford to treat its creators like mechanical text generators. We are not an unfeeling assembly line, only there to produce content. We are enthusiasts, engaging in our hobby. No fan creator has to show you anything. They are fully within their rights to keep their works hidden in their computer files, never to see the light of day. Every fanfic on AO3 is only there because someone had the grace to share it with you. You are not entitled to an author's work, just as they are not entitled to your kudos. We have a mutually beneficial arrangement. Do not forget your part in this symbiosis.
It's a problem that extends beyond AO3. Tumblr is a less enthusiastic place than it used to be. Fandom as a whole is drifting towards a consumption mindset. I, for one, am sick of it. Reblog things, like them, share them. Make fanart of fanart. Who gives a shit? Do the cringy thing. You don't have to cultivate your blog aesthetic. Be who you are, like what you like, and have enthusiasm about all of it. Fandom should be an expression of radical self acceptance. Embrace it. Leave essays about fics that you liked. Reblog the essays of other's when you see them. Exist in the mutual joy of seeing and being seen. You are not just an external observer, absorbing content from a distance. You are here too. Wave back at us. Say 'hi.'
You can count it as charity work on your metaphysical taxes.
My final appeal is a moral one.
Commenting on AO3 is just a kind thing to do.
You are your actions. Are you the kind of person who does the kind thing when no one is watching? When no one will care?
Fanfiction is a hobby, and I'm not here to guilt you about how you spend your leisure time. I'm only here to say that there is a kindness you could be giving the world.
If you are one of the people that performs this kindness, I thank you.

If I Should Stay
Part 1 | . . . | Part 67 | Part 68
Steve barges inside and shuts the door as gently as he can. “Robs,” he says, then pauses. “Alli. I dunno. Just-” he shakes his head and heads upstairs without another word, missing the worried glance the girls share as they hurry to follow him.
Allison hesitantly knocks on his bedroom door, which he’d just disappeared behind. “Bubba?”
“Yeah,” he answers, but doesn’t open the door.
“Can we come in?” Robin asks.
He huffs an approximation of a laugh. “Since when do you ask?”
She parrots the quasi-laugh and opens the door, plopping down on the floor next to him. “Since it’s your room, dingus.” She nudges his shoulder with hers. “Wanna talk about it?”
He shrugs and brings his legs up to hug. “She’s not coming on this one.”
“That’s probably a good thing-”
“Neither is Jon.”
“And this was-”
“Her request. Yeah.”
Robin breathes out a long, slow breath. “That’s hard.”
“Yeah.”
Alli sits on his other side. “You okay, bubba?”
Steve tips over into her, lets her wrap him in a hug. “I dunno.”
Alli hums. “Sounds about right. Can you think of anything that’ll help right now, in the moment?”
Steve sighs. “This. I just need to get out of my head for a minute.” He tucks his face into her neck with another sigh. “I’m gonna sound like the sappiest person on the planet for saying this, but-”
Robin squeezes his thigh. “I’ll go get him.”
A minute later, a different kind of warmth is settling next to him. “I’m gonna be honest,” Eddie starts, “I don’t really know how to help right now.”
Steve sits up and squeezes Alli’s hand, accepting the forehead kiss before she leaves, closing his door behind her. Without looking, Steve takes Eddie’s hand. He leans his head back against his bed and shuts his eyes with a tired sigh. “Just sit here with me?”
“I can do that,” Eddie answers. “D’you want silence? Or d’you want me to talk?”
“Talk,” Steve decides. “Take my mind off of it. Please.”
“Sure,” Eddie says, shifting up onto his knees, but leaving his hand in Steve’s so he can continue to play with the rings. Steve’s heart squeezes. “But what to talk about? Shall I regale you with the tale of how the illustrious Party defeated the monstrous Vecna? Or perhaps my liege requires a softer tale, such as one from his humble bard’s even humbler youth?”
Steve manages a smile as he looks at Eddie. “You’d tell me embarrassing stories of you as a kid?”
“Woah now,” Eddie smiles, “I never said embarrassing.” He pauses for a minute, then, “But yeah, I’d tell you embarrassing stories of me as a kid.”
Steve bites his lip, twirls a ring around Eddie’s finger, and nods.
Eddie chuckles and gets comfortable, sitting next to Steve, shoulders and arms and legs brushing. “Alright, let me think. Did I ever tell you about the time I tried to tame a raccoon?”
“No.”
“I was probably twelve, or somewhere around there. Way too old to try, I definitely knew better, but I tried anyways. I’d just started living with Wayne and still wasn’t really sure if I belonged, y’know? And there was this raccoon that lived under the porch, y’know that boarded-up place right about where the couch is?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, it lived under there. That’s why it’s boarded up, actually, but that happened later. So I decided, in all my twelve-year-old wisdom, the way to lure it out was to offer it food.”
Steve hums. “Bet it worked.”
Eddie snickers. “Well, yeah, but raccoons are smart. Smarter than twelve-year-old Eddie, apparently, because I had the bright idea to hide just inside the door, right? Except I got bored before it came out, and I went to go do my own thing, and I completely forgot about it. And y’know what Wayne found when he got home from work?” Steve hums. “An empty plate. I’m talking spotless, Stevie, that raccoon licked it clean and hid back in its hidey-hole. So I try again the next day. This time, though, I leave the plate of food out there and sit in front of the open door with a book.”
“Oh, I’m sure that worked well,” Steve mutters, smile playing at his lips.
Eddie snickers. “Well, it did work. I did get a chance to see the raccoon, up close and personal. It decided it was done taking food off the plate. It wanted the good stuff, in the kitchen, past the open door, guarded by a twelve-year-old with more ideas than sense and a book.”
“Oh no.”
“Yup. Ran straight past me. Y’know what I did?”
Steve’s grinning now. “What?”
“Hid in my room ‘till Wayne got back.”
Steve barks out a laugh, then covers his mouth, still giggling. “You didn’t!”
“I did! I was sure Wayne was gonna take one look at the mess and kick me out. We had a talk, alright, but he didn’t kick me out, and I never tried that again, I’ll tell you right now.”
Steve giggles more. “You’re crazy.”
Eddie grins, nudges Steve’s shoulder with his own. “Yeah, but you’re feeling better, aren’t you?”

Steddie Microfic
March bonus prompt: birthday
Word count: 290
No warnings apply
Rated G
@steddiemicrofic and especially the HAPPIEST of birthdays to @steddieas-shegoes! When I was first starting out in this fandom, you were one of the first people I really connected with, and I am so grateful for your presence on this site! ❤️
Tumblr media
Steve knows it doesn’t have to be perfect, okay? He knows.
Except… it also kind of does.
Here’s how it goes. Last year, Eddie was stuck in a hospital, handcuffed to the bed, because he was wrongly accused of murder after almost being eaten by interdimensional monsters.
Steve has decided, as one of Eddie’s best friends—and the secret love of his life, not that Eddie needs to know about his feelings—that this year would be perfect.
The cake looks fantastic. The music has been left in Robin’s more-than-capable hands. The presents are all wrapped and sitting in a neat little pile on the kitchen table, behind the cake. Wayne’s just helped Steve finish his chili, the one thing Eddie asked for.
“If I can have anything this year,” he’d said quietly, looking off into the distance, “I think I don’t really want much. All my friends, obviously, but all I really want besides that is Wayne’s chili.”
“There’s no fuckin’ way,” he whispered later, ghosting his fingers over the wrapping paper of the largest present. “If this is what I think it is-”
Steve grinned as he finally tore into it, gasping when he’s holding a brand-new guitar, the same kind as the one lost to the Upside Down.
“You’ll have to give me an encore soon,” Steve murmurs later, after everyone else is gone, nodding at the guitar, before smiling nervously. “It’s not over yet. I have something for you that I keep chickening out of giving to you.”
Eddie frowns and tilts his head, listening. “What’s that?”
Steve ducks his head, barely dares eye contact when he says, “A kiss?”
Eddie grins, wider than Steve’s seen all day. “Well, what’re you waiting for? I want my birthday present!”

Had a vague idea. Churned this out in probably five minutes. Haven’t even read it through. Bone apple tit and all that jazz.
Steve thought of love like a house.
Not just any house; his house.
It looked great on the outside, and the inside was always ready, poised and perfect for guests, but really? It was lonely. It was fake. It was empty. It was everything Steve hated, everything he couldn’t get away from.
His breakup with Nancy only served to further prove his theory.
But then Eddie came along, and he couldn’t help but fall for him. He couldn’t help but love him, whole-heartedly.
And Christ, did that scare Steve. Because under all his throw pillows and open-concept living space, who was he? Why would Eddie stay when everything that makes up Steve could be gone with just the flick of a match?
It doesn’t make sense, really, for him to be standing at the site of where his house once was. It’s a pile of smoking rubble now—product of a faulty gas line—and Steve’s breaking.
Hard.
His knees crumble, and he’d fall to the pavement if Eddie didn’t catch him. “Hey,” Eddie says softly. “I know it’s a lot. I know it’s scary. But you can get through this, okay?” He whispers. “We can get through this. Cause I’m not leaving you.” He helps Steve back up, leads him towards the ash and ruin.
“Look here,” he murmurs, tracing the line of where the kitchen had been with his pointed finger. “The foundation’s still there, baby. All that’s gone is everything you hated in the first place. I know all this change at once is scary, but maybe you could see it as a good thing. The foundation’s still there, rock-solid. Now you can build it back up the way you want, the way you need, with everything that makes it you. How’s that sound?”
For the first time, Steve lets himself love fully; lets himself turn and bury his face in Eddie’s neck, lets his fingers clutch at Eddie’s waist as he tries for regulate his breathing. Lets Eddie see all of him. “Sounds pretty good,” he admits.

Something about human, non-powered superheroes. Something about living in a world with gods and aliens and speedsters and making the choice to stand beside them. Something about being painfully aware of your own mortality but choosing to keep fighting for good. Something about knowing that most of your teammates could do takes you days in seconds and deciding "no, if I can help even the slightest bit, I must". Something about pushing yourself to your limits and beyond so that you can stand up against evils so much greater than yourself and face them without hesitation. Something about having the choice to live a normal life- it's not your birthright, it's not some greater fate, you have every option to keep yourself safe- and saying no. Something.
