Late Night With The Devil Review
It’s not the kind of horror that has people running and screaming for most of its runtime. In fact it takes a while to set things up and really builds up the tension well. It uses the premise of being found footage of the original TV broadcast, giving us a look at a Dick Cavette style show where the guests clash over their different opinions. This is mixed in with backstage footage of Delroy and the crew trying to hold things together as the show becomes more and more disturbing.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver Review
Where ‘Rebel Moon Part Two’ works best is as a straight-up action sci-fi movie, with all the pretensions of being the next ‘Star Wars’ removed, and just getting down to telling a limited story in a limited world. It looks good too, with some great visuals and good action set pieces. In case there was any doubt, Zack Snyder still loves slow motion though, and uses it to excess. Do we really need to see them threshing the wheat in slow mo? At times it can reveal the gaps in choreography, too, especially in the sword fight scenes.

Can Hollywood take advantage of the craze for monster movies?
Tumblr media
Movies like Godzilla X Kong and Godzilla Minus One have been big hits audiences, but will Hollywood be able to capitalize on their popularity?
There aren't that many monster franchises that can be taken straight off the shelf and rebooted, meaning the only option for many franchises will be to start right from the beginning, with a completely new world.
There's a chance for other Godzilla and Kong films not in the MonsterVerse, but most studios don't have the luxury of an established franchise. The 2025 Jurassic World could be a chance for Universal to catch the action, and no doubt legendary b-movies like Tremors will be looking to ride the wave.

Did anyone else watch 'Damsel' on Netflix?
Tumblr media
It seems to have been forgotten about pretty quickly, and I can see why. For all the marketing tried to make it seem like something new, it's just a collection of old fantasy film tropes that have been used many times before. There's really nothing new in it and it has more than a passing resemblance to the 1981 movie Dragonslayer.
It's a shame really because the actors are wasted by the script and the story is full of convenience and contrivance, with a twist that you can see coming from a mile away. Its only good point is that is doesn't do anything truly terrible, because it just doesn't do anything at all.

One big problem with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the size of its cast.
Tumblr media
There are just too many characters onscreen to do them all justice, which means they end up being underserved.
This is especially true for the Spengler family. They should be the driving force behind the story, but apart from Phoebe, they don't have much to do.
Introducing new characters like Pinfield and Nadeem doesn't help either. There are already established characters such as Podcast and Lucky who are underserved. They could have filled these roles along with the Spenglers and solved two problems at the same time.

Mortal Engines (2018) Review
Tumblr media
I watched this movie recently and have to say it exceeded my expectations. I knew it had done badly critically and commercially, and wasn't sure whether having Peter Jackson as producer would be a help or a hindrance, but I genuinely enjoyed watching it.
It's not the kind of film that does anything too new or adventurous, but it has an intriguing premise with the giant mobile cities that devour anything in their path. This was its strongest aspect. There's an interesting world there and it's well-realised on screen.
As for characters, the two leads are good enough. Pretty standard in some respects, with tragic backstories and revenge plots, but still relatable. The broader cast could do with more character moments, but Hugo Weaving is a dependable villain.
Tumblr media
It's a shame it did so poorly, as there's a decent world here that could be explored in more depth, and so many interesting things, like Shrike, the undead soldier, that I'm sure there's a lot of unexplored potential which sadly we never got to see in a sequel.
Maybe it will be rebooted, like so many other fantasy franchises and end up as a dreaming show.
I can't comment on it as an adaptation because I've never read the books it's based on, but as a film it's a decent, entertaining fantasy adventure that deserved better.

It's a shame Gore Verbinski hasn't made any new movies for a while. His Pirates of the Caribbean entries were the best in the franchise, especially Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest.
Tumblr media
Even The Lone Ranger had it's moments. It wasn't perfect and was too muddled, but a fun watch.
It would be interesting to see what he could do in today's Hollywood. There's a market for fun, swashbuckling adventures and it needs filling.

I watched the movie Super 8 for the first time a couple of days ago and it was a pleasant surprise.
Tumblr media
I saw a trailer ages ago and I'd always thought it had a strong Spielberg vibe, my suspicions were confirmed after seeing it.
It feels like when he was at his height in the '80s when everything he touched turned to gold, even if he was only a producer.
It certainly owes a lot to The Goonies, and obviously J.J. Abrams is stealing a lot of Spielberg's best moments, but it feels more like it's done out of respect than amateur copying.
I have to say, after seeing what J.J. did to Star Wars and Star Trek, I wasn't too confident when I realised he directed it, but that was the biggest surprise of all. It might borrow stylistically from Spielberg, but the story is good and not a direct copy of anything. It has a build up in the tension and delivers some genuinely wonderful character moments. It only makes me sadder about how The Force Awakens turned out.
There are good performances too. There's always the worry with a kid-led movie that they might not measure up, but all the young cast play it well, with that great friends group feel.
It's clearly been an influence on Stranger Things, coming out a few years before the infamous Netflix show, and surely the Duffer Brothers must have seen it.
It's not a perfect movie. I don't think the creature design is that good, and the ending feels rushed, but still a great watch, and not only that, but an entertaining and satisfying one, made on a (relatively) small budget.
Even though it's only 13 years old, it feels like cinema has moved on from trying to make movies like this, but they really need to get back to it ASAP.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Review
There’s something outlandish and over the top in the very premise of these movies, especially now that the idea of a Hollow Earth has been opened up. Being forced to share the world with these city-destroying titans was bad enough, but now there’s an entire ecosystem thriving just below the surface of the planet which could expand upwards at any moment. They’ve firmly embraced their pulpy origins and this film increases everything to the max, barely clinging on to reality.
