I hate the “The Dursleys only abused Harry because he’s a horcrux” theory.
The first chapter of the series establishes that Vernon and Petunia are bigoted, petty, hateful people who want everything to be the same as them; they’re embodiments of white middle class conservatives. Petunia is explicitly shown to have always been, since childhood, hateful of magic and people who are different than her, including her sister and Severus who she hated not only for being a wizard but for being poor and abused (she references him being from “the bad part of town” and his family having domestic violence). That is their personality, some people are just bad and abusive. It’s not at all unrealistic or exaggerated that the Dursleys would treat Harry that badly for no understandable “reason”. That’s the harsh reality of abuse.
That’s also just not how horcruxes work, they’re not indiscriminately corrupting like dementors or else everyone or at least all muggles would hate and abuse Harry which they don’t. With the locket, it knew they were trying to destroy it and was attacking them back. With the diary, Tom had a plan and a reason for corrupting Ginny. And even then they could all resist and fight back which we never see the Dursleys do. People often reference Ron turning on Harry but if the horcrux in Harry can make people hate him whenever it wants regardless of their real feelings or personality, why not turn his most powerful allies Ron and Hermione away from him years ago when they repeatedly proved threats to Voldemort?
Presumably it cannot or it would’ve. Ron only lost himself momentarily after cumulative effects of the locket plus being injured, half-starved, exhausted, and then overhearing Harry sound dismissive of Ginny being in danger. Also, Ron had stormed off and abandoned Harry to face danger alone in his temper tantrums before like in Goblet of Fire so it’s not like the horcrux made him a different person or “possessed him”, it just exaggerated and worsened existing traits. So, at the very, very least abuse is an existing trait of Vernon and Petunia.

All she knew of Robert Arryn was that he was a little boy, and sickly. It is not me she wants her son to marry, it is my claim. No one will ever marry me for love.
But a dragon could not feed a hungry child nor help a dying woman’s pain. And who would ever dare to love a dragon?
for @queenaerys, happy velaryontines day <3

Even thinking that she is a “low level” villain and not “the big bad” is wrong, but there are people who do think Arya is going to heroically murder her sister at the end which would put her on the level of others on Arya’s list like The Hound and Joffrey since it’s not in-character for Arya to cold-bloodily kill someone for minor infractions. (Yes, they think this about the same Arya whose whole arc is about her family including Sansa who she consistently misses and mentions positively).
And I don’t think anyone who obviously is in anti sansa spaces regularly and makes multiple accounts just to spam Sansa tags with hate like that person does is ignorant of that theory, I think they know that perfectly fucking well and are just trying to backtrack and pretend we’re overreacting to the onslaught of misogynistic ridiculousness that exists in this fandom. No, being anti Sansa is not the rational, canon-accurate approach to the text.
Imagine reading books full of pedophiles, slavers, torturers, child crucifers, ice zombies, and a dude whose whole personality is skinning people alive - and being like “Sansa Stark will be The Big Bad 🤡”.

TBH, I think appearance does have a lot to do with it. I don’t think people only like Draco because he’s hot, that’s a bit of an oversimplification. I personally like the potential of Draco’s character as someone who could have a more complex redemption arc than someone who was abused (technically he and his family were “abused” by Voldemort in a way and Draco was least responsible for being in that situation but not counting that).
But I do absolutely think the fandom are quicker to infantilize and would rather coo over the traumas of a conventionally attractive, blond, blue-eyed boy who is socially charming and rich rather than a poor, “greasy”, heavily neurodivergent-coded kid with a large “hooked nose” and dark hair and eyes since there’s multiple negative prejudices associated with all of Severus’ appearance and characterization.
It’s similar to how Marauders Stans tried to claim that The Marauders were geniuses and Severus stole his potions ideas from them (not sure how he was a notably successful potions masters for decades without them then lol) and that he was the one who in fact abused them even though that’s never shown. Because The Marauders are conventionally attractive rich boys with no ND or POC coding (other than maybe Sirius and Remus but Remus wasn’t as directly involved in the abuse and Sirius still has rich boy points) like Severus has so people would rather make up fanon and obsess over them and say they’re “Just boys being boys” even with virtually no positive behavior from them being shown in canon and no canon apologies to Severus.
Do the “Draco was just a boy, Snape was an adult!” crowd realize that Severus is significantly younger in the books? Severus was only 20-21 when he turncoaked The Deatheaters and become a spy, the brain doesn’t develop impulse control and non-b&w thinking until 25 at the absolute earliest and prolonged trauma (which Severus had and Draco didn’t) physically damages the brain, slowing that process down.
Severus was groomed as a teenager (about the same age as Draco was) into a rising cult by an, at the time, charismatic young Tom Riddle who was at his height of manipulation and power. And Severus was canonically abused by a muggle man and by Gryffindors mercilessly his whole developing years. That crowd incessantly fanons that Draco was “abused” by his parents when he wasn’t but hate Severus like make it make sense.
