The things I read change the things I write. I've read so many genres, but the one that most changed the way I approached writing was faith-based YA. There's not a lot of this out there, especially of the variety that is not only sold in Christian Book Stores (there are a few problems with that, but that is a topic for another day). I read the book "Dress Code For Small Towns" as a sophomore in college and, while I do not agree with this book theologically at all, I give it props for addressing faith and faith-related themes in a mainstream market, something a lot of authors do not have the wherewithal to do. Young adults are almost constantly surrounded by media, whether it be music, videos, internet, or books. What better way to keep them rooted in their faith, but to show Christian teens in books, also surrounded by secular culture, struggling and learning and growing in their faith?
