It’s April 1st, so that means time for a non-drawing hand challenge. It turned out way better than I expected. I did use the circle and line tool in a few instances, but I did it left-handed! In fact, everything, from the sketch layers to the lineart to the coloring, was all done with my non-drawing hand.

Fun fact: this recipe was originally intended to be April Fool’s themed. Mainly to poke fun at Berdly, but also to play with expectations on what you’d expect a “Gamer’s Delight” to be, since it uses the same sprite as Queen’s battery acid pie.
Castletown Café Episode 22: Gamer’s Delight
Tumblr media
Berdly, the annoying bluebird, wants to work with Queen, the main antagonist of Chapter 2. Understandably, Queen can’t stand him, and runs or hides whenever she hears him approach. One of Berdly’s attempts to get her attention is to tempt her with some pie that he calls a “Gamer’s Delight”, which shares the same sprite as Queen’s Battery Acid Pie that she offers to Noelle. Berdly claims to have baked it himself, but did he really just steal a battery acid pie and claimed it was a “Gamer’s Delight”? We may never know. Another thing we may never know is what a Gamer’s Delight even is.

I know this is a Deltarune side blog but aaaa I just gotta show off my hard work here 😅 I reblogged Koraidon so I’d like to show off the completed set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
POKÉMON DAY IS TOMORROW! And just in time, I got Miraidon done! Both were originally meant to be finished by Lunar New Year but of course something THIS detailed takes me way too long to meet a deadline. So I held onto this for Pokémon Day, and, well, I couldn’t wait any longer! The Paradox Dragons are both here!
What are your hopes for Pokémon Day this year? Mine are “no mainline game this year” because Game Freak needs more time to develop main series titles. We don’t need annual titles, it’s inefficient and we have a quantity over quality problem, and it shows. So give us nothing! We can always have spinoff titles or even ports of Gens 1-3 on NSO (something that will NEVER happen).

So, as far as new recipes are concerned, I’m mostly stuck with difficult ones such as candy, bagels, and macarons…oh! Well, there’s also Lancer Cookies and Spin Cakes.
Chapter 3, according to the newsletter, is almost finished! Which may mean new food items to re-create soon! Exciting to think about.
Regardless, I got a lot of practicing to do. Especially when it comes to thinks I need my candy thermometers for. It always stokes my anxiety a little since the last time I tried candy, my thermometer didn’t work, and analog ones lose calibration all the time. The digital ones have served me better when making donuts or other fried food, though, so I may stick with that trusty fellow for frying and candy-making.
I’ve still been cooking, but my focus has gone to season-related meals, snacks, sweets and drinks because each season has its own set of flavors that are festive for that time of year - such as oranges at New Years, red velvet and chocolate-strawberry at Valentine’s, and Irish Cream next month.
I try to write stuff down, but I also hate writing 😅 and sometimes it takes multiple tries before I perfect something!

Castletown Café Episode 2: Hearts Donut
Tumblr media
Hearts, don’t it? A Hathy sells these heart-shaped doughnuts at the Bake Sale in the Scarlet Forest, which heals each party member a different amount of HP depending on whether or not you’re in battle. Surprisingly, these doughnuts are not filled with “clotty, red jam”, as the description states, but actually blood, if the character’s reactions are anything to go by (much to Susie’s delight). Of course, there’s no way we’re filling these doughnuts with blood, just sweet strawberry jam - perfect for Valentine’s Day!
There are many, many recipes out there for home-made doughnuts; since baking recipes are not something you can easily alter or make up yourself, nor do I have much experience working with yeast let alone deep-frying, so I had to settle on using a recipe that already exists that I will need to link to and credit. I went with Feast of Fiction’s Varri Cakes recipe as a base for my Hearts Donuts, because it looked the simplest and it was a small amount, which was just right for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do keep in mind though, that with this small-batch recipe, your doughnuts will have a strong yeast flavor. I don’t mind the taste, but if you do, you may want to look for a different recipe. Another thing to keep in mind is that doughnuts have a VERY short shelf life, hence another good reason to go with a small-batch recipe like FOF’s - unless you’re planning on making enough for a party or bake sale! You’ll need plenty of help eating these sweet treats before they get too dry!
Lastly, the FDA recommends refrigerating anything containing raw eggs after 2 hours for food-safety reasons. So, be sure to add your room-temperature egg to your dough mixture no later than 30 minutes after you set it out, and if you want your dough to proof longer, stick it in the fridge. Refrigerating your dough won’t kill the yeast.
Now, for the recipe, go follow the link to Feast of Fiction’s YouTube video for Varri Cakes, the video description is where you’ll find the written recipe. Follow that up until we get to the part where they cut the dough into rectangles - we won’t be doing that.
Tumblr media
Instead, we will be rolling the dough out and cutting out heart-shapes using a good-sized heart-shaped cookie cutter like the image above (I used the second biggest, which looks to be about 3 by 2 and 1/2 inches or so, my calculation’s probably way off, but somewhere around that size). I was able to cut out 6 hearts, though I had enough dough for 7. I saved the scraps and rolled those up into balls to make donut holes, which ended up being much bigger than I expected!
Tumblr media
Lay your yeasty-dough hearts on a cookie sheet, and cover them up for about 20 minutes or so, and fill up a deep saucepan or pot with oil (I suggest canola or vegetable oil, though canola is healthier - as healthier as oil for frying can be, lol). Fill your pot about halfway with oil, turn on medium heat, and if you have a candy thermometer, you may want to use it so you can watch the temperature reach where you want it to be, about 330 degrees F. A trick more experienced cooks and bakers may use is to test how hot that oil is by sticking the end of a wooden spoon in to see if it bubbles only around the end. That’s how they know it’s hot enough without even using a thermometer. (If your oil is boiling, that’s too hot!) Personally, I prefer relying on the thermometer since I’m less experienced.
Tumblr media
They’re risen and ready!
With your dough hot enough, and your doughy hearts all puffed up and ready to go, carefully stick ‘em in your pot and fry ‘em on both sides for about a couple of minutes. I used chopsticks to check on them and turn them over as they fried, until they were nice and puffy and golden brown on both sides. Take ‘em out of the oil when they’re done, place ‘em on a cookie sheet lined with paper towels, and wipe off the excess oil. Do the same until all your hearts are fried and give each doughnut a nice coating of powdered sugar. But before we can fill them with jam, they need to cool first.
Tumblr media
Fresh out of the frier, needing to cool and get dusted with powdered sugar!
Once these doughnuts have cooled completely, poke a hole in the top of your doughnut heart. Any utensil works, I used a chopstick (once again! Chopsticks are a useful tool when making doughnuts). Get a nice hole size going, and using a piping bag filled with jam, fill ‘er up. Repeat this for all your doughnuts and dust with more powdered sugar. You can use whatever jam you want - red’s best for the Valentine’s season! Strawberry, raspberry, cherry, go wild!
Tumblr media
The finished product, with jam-filled donut holes.
Tumblr media
Cross-section!!
These go great with coffee - especially coffee served in a heart-themed mug. Share your Hearts Donuts with your friends, your Valentine, your family, or whoever you want! Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️❤️❤️

With Dragon being an entire Pokémon type, I had loads to choose from for my Pokémon Lunar New Year art piece this year. I settled upon Koraidon and Miraidon, but I only got Koraidon done on time. Miraidon probably won’t be finished until next week sometime.

Castletown Café Episode 28: Butler Juice (Red)
Tumblr media
Butler juice comes in different colors, flavor changing with temperature. This flavor was a long time coming and is perfect for the holiday season. It’s a combination of pomegranate with cranberry and mulled with spices, best served warm. Enjoy plain, or if you want to make it an adult beverage, with spiced rum (or even mull with a sweet red wine). Glass cocktail mugs are perfect to serve it in, even if serving alcohol-free, and is a warm cup of holiday cheer. It’s sweet, spicy, but with the addition of a little tartness.
The recipe is similar to the one I did for orange Butler Juice, with cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, a sliced orange and allspice berries, minus the ginger.
BUTLER JUICE (RED):
24 oz plain pomegranate juice (look closely at the bottles to make sure it’s not mixed with another juice flavor)
8-12 oz cranberry juice (or cherry if you’d rather, again, look closely at the bottles)!
3 cinnamon sticks
8 allspice berries
2 small star anise pods
10 whole cloves
1 large, whole sliced orange
Pour in juices in a medium to large pot and add the spices and orange.
Bring to a simmer on medium-low heat, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Let the drink mull together for an hour or two.
Ladle into a cocktail mug and serve, strain the juice into a container to store leftovers.
Enjoy your time off from work or school, and have a happy New Year!

It’s that time of year again! 🎄
Castletown Café Episode 21: QC’s Hot Cocoa
Tumblr media
Winter is here, and the holiday season is in full swing. Hot cocoa always seems to taste especially good this time of year. There’s just something about hot cocoa in December…..
QC’s Diner in the Light World serves hot cocoa with bunny-shaped marshmallows. Kris is given a free mug by the bunny waitress (presumably QC) after talking to her. However, they can’t bring themself to take even a sip….is it a reminder of a happier time before things went wrong?

Life Updates, AuDHD, and A Mental Trainwreck
Content Warnings: Mental illness, current events, betrayal trauma, abuse, & family death.
It's time I talked about how things have been for me lately. I'm tired of hyping up all these things/projects I can't commit to, it feels like I'm making promises I can't fulfill. I get too ambitious, I get too many ideas, and even the ones I manage to see through, I just do not enjoy the writing portion.
About a year ago, my focus drifted away from Castletown Cafe. Many of you here may know what that's like to lose interest/hyperfixation on one thing and get fixated on something else, that's natural for us with autism and ADHD. We get an intense hyperfocus on a topic or project for a while only to shift to the next topic, losing interest or forgetting about the previous. I got really fixated on Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, Splatoon 3, and ACNH this past year, as well as making my own unrelated cooking projects revolving around seasonal ingredients. This fall, I got crazy ambitious for an entire fall-themed cookbook and even a Halloween one, things that obviously will take years of practice and experimentation (and need year-round work).
On top of that, however, I have not been feeling as well mentally this year. I've had less motivation to draw, and felt a stronger dislike of writing. If you have ADHD you know how hard it is to get yourself to do something you don't want to do. It's like pulling teeth. I've always had issues with executive dysfunction, and I wonder how much of it I've succumbed to this year. And while I've never been diagnosed with clinical depression, I'm wondering/concerned if I am showing signs of it like I might have been this year with my lack of motivation, my focus and drive getting worse, loss of enjoyment of things I ordinarily enjoy doing, such as drawing, feeling sad more often, and either sleeping too much or too little.
Granted the events of this fall haven't helped. We all know what's going on in the world right now. It's horrifying, it's depressing, and it's easy to feel helpless, but we all have the power to protest, to boycott, and to use social media to amplify voices of the marginalized. I have been very active on Twitter with this, but it has also been hard to enjoy my favorite times of year, the fall and Halloween, when tens of thousands are being massacred. It's no wonder I have been so depressed this fall, knowing the country we live in is siding with the colonizers and is actively funding genocide. Our tax dollars are being used to fund this and many, if not most, American brands and companies are also in favor of it.
Then, in November, I discover that an 80s band I liked is guilty of VERY inappropriate behavior toward women. One I had been listening to for the past few years. Fronted by a guy whose music I had enjoyed since childhood. I shouldn't have been so surprised, but it still broke me anyway. Another betrayal was a YouTuber who turned out to be an imposter with no thoughts or opinions of his own, only stolen from others. Yet another was a confirmation of suspicions I had toward a certain animator having NPD and being abusive, (who, to be honest, I never actually liked, just her art style and cartoons).
Oh, but that's not all! Here's where it gets really personal, but I think I really need to disclose this. On top of everything going on, I had two deaths in the family recently. One was a parent whom I didn't get along with very well, the other was my old pup Oscar. My old doggo has been easier to grieve, because he was a sweet, good boy....and honestly....he deserved a better end to his life than what he got. He was living with my father, keeping him company. My father was the parent I had a bad relationship with, and is the reason I advocate strongly for responsible and careful drinking. Because he failed to do that. He always used alcohol for self-medication, something you should NEVER do. His substance abuse got worse and worse over the years, driving him meaner and more abusive. He was never really kind to me, even if he tried to be. I never had a good relationship with my father, and honestly I know a lot of people can relate to that with one or both of their parents. A lot of us have betrayal trauma from growing up, maybe you have parents who don't love you unconditionally, or parents who never wanted to be parents, emotionally or physically abusive parents, you get the idea. Mine just so happened to be a man born and raised in a time where there was no diagnosis for his neurodivergence. He had tons of internalized ableism that he pushed onto me, and modelled horrible, angry behavior. He also had depression, but never sought help, and I believe that's due to toxic masculinity.
He can't hurt me anymore, though. I moved out of his house almost 5 years ago, and I wish it had been sooner. I'm not sure how to feel about his passing, because of how he treated me when he was alive. One thing I have been feeling though, is stress. He has left behind a house that is a disaster because he neglected to take care of it, tons of debt because he had failed to pay his bills, and no will whatsoever so inheritance is also going to be a mess to untangle. My family and I have been going back to that house to clean it, get it repaired, and figure out what to do with everything left behind. Right in the middle of a holiday season. What fun /sarcasm.
On the topic of Oscar, it's safe to say how he passed/what happened. My father went first, and so Oscar just curled up next to him.....and stayed there until he also died. And honestly....that's just heartbreaking.....I wish Oscar could've howled for help, that someone could have heard him and come to his rescue and taken care of him....but he didn't....I just wish i could have been by Oscar's side in his final moments. I know he was an old dog, he lived to be 15 and a half...but he's with my grandma now and I hope she's taking good care of him, wherever they are.
Meanwhile, Penny has been a new family member since July. She has been by my side to give hugs and cuddles, and I've needed them a lot these past few weeks. Since Oscar stayed behind to keep my father company when I moved out a few years ago, I missed my puppy, and having a little doggo around. And so, enter Penny. She's even registered as an emotional support animal, or ESA, and she goes all kinds of places with me. I love the attention she gets from other people when we go shopping together. Her cuteness lightens up a room and makes the day of many people.
My little fluffy girl has been a big help getting me through everything this season.
Back to Castletown Cafe, it may take a while, but I hope one day to return to it. I have all kinds of ideas and things I want to make and practice, and I also hope to create more content in 2024, even doing more live gaming on Twitch. I got a new computer for streaming, but I still need a monitor for it. I wanna have a streaming schedule and everything.
I really appreciate all of you who are still here even though I haven't been able to make many new things or deliver upon hyped ideas. I feel bad about my lack of content this year, though with recent life events I think it's really understandable as to why I haven't been able to churn out much in that regard.
One more thing: I do want to disclose that my ADHD is unmedicated. I can't get medication for it (not with this hell-thcare system) and I don't know what I should take for executive dysfunction. For those of you who made it this far with ADHD, what do you recommend?
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read this, especially if you made it all the way to the end here. I know it was a lot, and some of this is REALLY heavy stuff. These are things that we all do go through, however.
Thank you.
~ Mari 🧡

I’m still here, and still cooking, even though I haven’t been recreating things from Deltarune. I got hyperfocused on fall dishes and drinks starring lovely fall ingredients - and while fall is almost over, there’s still plenty I wanna keep making and practicing. I’ve managed to solidify several recipes, however, I REALLY do not like writing. The recipe portion is the easiest. The less fun part is having to write an entire blog post that introduces it. That’s way less fun for me, I often don’t have ideas. With Deltarune food, it’s way easier since I have the game and characters involved that I can talk about. Not so much with an original project….
Anyway, amongst the fall (and upcoming holiday) related projects, I hope to at least get one more Deltarune inspired recipe for the holiday season. I still haven’t done red Butler Juice yet, and I know exactly what I’m gonna do for it. Not only that, but you’ll meet my Swatchling OC in the picture! I don’t often get to display my Deltarune OCs on this blog, but this is gonna be a great opportunity to do it.
As for Dark Candy, idk when I’m gonna finally attempt that again, but I do hope to attempt Light Candy for a Valentine’s episode. It won’t be chalk candy (cause that’s gross), but I’m hoping I can learn how to work with chocolate better. As it’s now peppermint bark season, now’s a good time to build chocolate-tempering skills so I wind up with candy that looks beautiful and has the proper texture.
Meanwhile, I can share some more of my Flavorfall recipes, though I don’t have pictures for ALL of them. I tried to remember to take pics for most of them, however.
Anyway, been a month, time to give an update.

Drinks of Doom: Pumpkin Spice Haunt Cocoa
What could be better than a little cauldron full of haunt cocoa? A little cauldron full of pumpkin spice haunt cocoa on Halloween night!
I’ve actually got more than one recipe this time around. There’s my “melt chocolate chips in almond milk” version, but I’ve got an alternate recipe using…hot cocoa mix? Yep. There’s so many different ways you can make a pumpkin spice hot cocoa, and these are just two examples!
I strongly recommend using canned pumpkin puree for pumpkin spice hot cocoas and lattes as opposed to fresh. This is because the canned puree of Dickinson pumpkins have a better texture that lends itself well to pumpkiny drinks, while freshly made puree from the small pie pumpkins you find at grocery stores this time of year have a lumpier texture and lend themselves better to food and baked goods, from pie to soup to cakes to stew.
It’s also more convenient to use pre-made pumpkin pie spice, since that makes it easier to measure, but you can also make your own if you don’t have any. Just combine about 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon with 1/8 teaspoon ginger, and a sprinkle of ground cloves and nutmeg. That’s enough for one serving, but if you need more, you can double the amounts suggested.
Which recipe will you pick? Whichever you choose, these tricks will lead to a real treat!
PUMPKIN SPICE HAUNT COCOA:
VER 1 (Serves 2):
1 and 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/3 cup milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 pinch salt
1/4 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
Heat almond milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add chocolate chips and whisk, melting the chocolate whole stirring to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn.
Add in pumpkin, vanilla, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Keep on stirring until everything is combined and chocolate is melted.
Pour into mugs. If desired, top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.
VER 2 (Serves 1):
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 cup milk or unsweetened almond milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 packet hot cocoa mix
4 oz hot water
Heat water in a kettle. Add hot cocoa mix into a 12 oz mug.
Combine pumpkin, milk, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice in a small microwave safe pitcher or creamer. Microwave in 3 second intervals, stirring in between, until milk is heated and steaming. Keep an eye on the milk mixture and stop the microwave before the milk gets to hot and starts to bubble (it can explode if overheated in the microwave). A (likely better) alternative is to combine pumpkin, milk, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice together in a small saucepan over medium heat, and stir occasionally while heating the mixture until steaming.
Pour milk mixture into the mug with hot cocoa mix and add the 4 ounces of hot water.
Stir until fully combined and if desired, top with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice.

Another Halloween recipe from last year! 🎃 time to reblog!
Castletown Café Episode 19: Butler Juice (Orange)
Tumblr media
When I started the Butler Juices in late Spring, I had planned on doing only four: green, blue, yellow, and red. I had overlooked one color: orange. As you “warmify” a Swatchling, they go from blue, to green, then yellow, orange, and finally red. So here we are, with a nice warm spiced juice that is a Halloween classic: apple cider.
While you can make it from scratch with fresh apples, using pre-made apple juice is the easier and more time-efficient route, and it’s always how I make it. Indeed, I do apple cider every fall, just heat up apple juice with orange slices and a ton of whole spices for an hour or so and there you have it! This simple and easy-to-make apple cider is best served warm, but it’s refreshing chilled as well.
BUTLER JUICE (ORANGE):
2 quarts apple juice
5 thin slices fresh ginger root
1 to 2 small star anise pods
1 medium sliced orange
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole allspice berries
10 whole cloves
Wash and slice orange. Peel and cut off a thumb of ginger and slice off 5 thin rounds.
Combine juice, ginger, whole spices, and orange slices in a large pot over medium-low heat. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and keep simmering for anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. The longer you brew your cider, the stronger the flavors of the spices will be infused.
Serve in a mug and garnish with an apple slice or cinnamon stick if you’d like. If you want to spike it and make it an adult beverage, I highly suggest spiced rum.
