today in the seemingly never ending saga of house problems, the contractors need to fix the structural water damage from the ground up which means they have to work in our bedroom tomorrow (in the back wall of the closet).

this is doubly annoying b/c we've been keeping the cats in there (since "their" bathroom connects to the master bedroom so it's been nice) and now have to relocate them (and everything that's in the closet) for the next few days. they are already super stressed and this is def going to stress them out a lot more

(josh is also very stressed, he's got permanent "this is fine" panic face on at all times. i am getting stressed too, like it's looking like WEEKS of construction)

well it's been a DAY long post is long/personal

got up at 6 am to feed pets b/c plumbers were getting here at 8 am to deal with the leak from a burst pipe in the wall around my office. They get here, turns out there's SEVERAL more burst/leaking pipes which will require a lot more work. guybrush (our dog) is getting really stressed and it turns out the plumbers have to go into the downstairs bathroom to assess more of the damage so i have to put the harness/leashes on the cats JUST in case (they were previously just locked in the bedroom where they like to hide under the bed anyway but i have fears of a skittish cat running into an open wall or soemthing). So i put guybrush in josh's office and innocently close the door to go deal with the cats.

the door apparently has a deadlock that requires a key which is INSIDE the office. guybrush is now locked inside the office and has started to keen (he's mostly blind and partially deaf and is only really calm if i'm with him, so this was TOO much for him). josh tries to drill out the lock to no avail. The internet suggests we use a sawzall on the stalk of the knob, fortunately the plumbers have one, guybrush is free.

meanwhile the contractors have arrived to fix a different problem in the kitchen (there was a hole in the join from our roof to the wall which caused water damage and rot). The whole beam has to be replaced. While starting to prep for this, they discover that the kitchen wiring is not at all up to code and must be redone. They also discover more damage (possibly from termites) that must be repaired. we curse the previous owners who apparently took all kinds of shortcuts (tbh we already didn't like them due to a bunch of drama when we first moved into this house, like they were def hot mess expresses)

the plumbers have to reroute the pipes over the ceiling of my office into the garage. they have to work slowly b/c they have to drill through each beam (which are oriented width wise instead of lengthwise). the water damage between the wall of my office and the bathroom is extensive, the wall is basically damp paper. the contractors are getting so much work. they are a little annoyed about how the plumbers *just* fixed the pipes but we are not changing it. the wall can have a tiny bump in it, it's fine.

they also discovered that a vent that was part of the bathroom originally wasn't filled in properly and we're probably getting water damage from that too. they'll be here every day for the next 2 weeks at least.

tl;dr: so this means i don't have access to either of my usual art spaces and have rerouted both my computer and the necessary parts of my traditional art stuff to the living room. We also have limited access to the kitchen (you know for food and stuff) for the rest of the week. We are both so tired, adulting is terrible sometimes lol

I’m playing Inquisition again

read something recently that said a majority of people don’t have a wall clock these days, thought it was interesting since I’ve always considered it an essential and functional piece of home decor.

that time my wild magic sorcerer* turned almost the whole party into animals by accident XD. even poor halsin who was already a bear

*she's actually my "multiclass into everything w/o talking to withers" achievement tav, i just decided to make it extra chaotic and go with the most unhinged subclass choices. I'm up to bard (lvl 4) on adding classes (i found a few reddit threads with recommendations on the order- started on cleric b/c they're fairly op out of the gate, then did warlock, sorcerer, bard. next i add wizard) . It's been extremely funny even if my character is perhaps the least useful in the party (they're actually suprisingly useful but im sure she could be MORE useful if i wasn't trying to multiclass into all 12 classes in one pt lol). The amount of dialogue choices you get is kinda silly (like it's just the longest list of options when you've multiclassed)

(also chose selune for the patron for extra meaty dialogue stuff with shadowheart)

also reminder that you should also switch your search engine in firefox (i.e. don't use google for anything, it's literally garbage these days). (there's a lot of supposedly independent search engines that are just reskinned google/utilize google anyway so be careful, also lots of ai shit out there :/ )

If you’re wondering what the whole drama regarding tieflings is in the Dungeons & Dragons fandom: basically, capitalism ruined tieflings, and for once that’s not even slightly a joke.

Tieflings were first introduced as a playable species in Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, via the Planescape campaign in 1994. At the time, there were no particular rules regarding what a tiefling was supposed to look like. The text explicitly stated that their basic physiology could vary wildly depending on what their fiendish ancestor was, and one of the first major Planescape supplements even included a table for randomly generating your tiefling’s appearance, if you were into that sort of thing.

This continued to be the case up through the game’s Third Edition. However, when the Fourth Edition rolled around in 2008, the game’s text suddenly became very particular about insisting that all tieflings looked pretty much the same. Some campaign settings even provided iin-character explanations for why all tieflings now had a standardised appearance. Understandably, this made a lot of people very annoyed.

There was naturally a great deal of speculation concerning what had motivated this change. It was widely cited as “proof” that Dungeons & Dragons was trying to appeal to the World of Warcraft fanbase – which was nonsense, of course; nearly all of the Fourth Edition’s allegedly MMO-like features were things that popular MMOs had borrowed from Dungeons & Dragons in the first place, and to the extent that tieflings’ new look resembled a particular WoW race, it was in that they were both extraordinarily generic.

In reality, it was a change that had been lurking for some time. Though Dungeons & Dragons is directly published by Wizards of the Coast, Wizards of the Coast is in turn owned by Hasbro, and Hasbro has long regarded the D&D core rulebooks as a vehicle for promoting D&D-branded merch – in particular, licensed miniature figures.

This was a bugbear that had reared its head before. When the Third Edition received major revisions in 2003, Hasbro corporate had ordered the game’s editors to completely remove any discussion of how to improvise minifigs for large battles, and replace it with an advertisement for the then-current Dungeons & Dragons Heroes product line. Implying that purchasing licensed minis wasn’t 100% mandatory simply would not do.

If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve probably already guessed where this is going: tieflings having no standard appearance made it difficult to sell tiefling minifigs, as any given minifig design would only be suitable for a small subset of tiefling characters. In the brutally reductive logic of the corporate mind, Hasbro reasoned: well, if we tell tiefling players that all of their characters now look the same, we can sell them all the same minifigs. So that’s what the game did, going so far as to write justifications into several published settings for magically transforming all existing tiefling characters to fit the new mould!

This worked about as well as anyone who isn’t a corporate drone would naturally anticipate – and that’s the story of how capitalism ruined tieflings.
