Jim x platonic!reader

Summary: Jim realizes his new friend is a changeling.

Requested?: Yes! This was inspired by a fantastic anon's request:

Can you do one with a changeling reader and Jim? Like jim finding out one of his friends is a changeling but they are willing to risk their life to help him? It can be either romantic or platonic, you choose!

This was fun to write, thank you for the request!!

Warnings: Bular gets really angry and violent at y/n. Large bruise. Fluffy ending.

You couldn’t believe what you were about to do, but you knew it was time. You were sick and tired of being a spy and being treated like trash. It was time to go where you were appreciated.

You made your way under the bridge, careful to stay in full sunlight. Bular didn’t know you were planning to change sides, but you were still nervous.

Cars drove over the bridge, completely unaware of what was lurking beneath it. It was remarkable how they were completely unaware of the world living beneath their feet.

You made your way into the canal and found Bular already lurking in the shadows. You had called this meeting and he probably expected some news on the Trollhunter. Little did he know was that you were done with him and spying.

Standing in the sun, far enough away from the edge of the shade, you waited for the gumm-gumm prince to say something.

“What news do you have of the Trollhunter?” He asked.

“None, I’m only here to tell you that I’m done spying,” you announced to the dark shadows that were hiding Bular. He didn’t respond so you continued. “I refuse to spy on the Trollhunter anymore, he doesn’t deserve it.”

“You’d betray your kin?” Bular asked, finally speaking. His voice was low and angry, you braced yourself for an outburst. “If you do this I will not hesitate to kill you and the Trollhunter.”

You took a step back, further into the bright sun. Bular stepped up to the edge of the shade and let out a roar, throwing a loose rock at you. It struck your cheek and you winced, retreating further into the light.

“I’d betray them gladly,” you stated, proud of the confidence in your voice despite the fact that you were terrified.

Bular didn’t say anything else, instead he roared and swung his sword in your direction. You took that as your cue to leave.

You took a deep breath as you knocked on Jim’s door. You had asked him and Toby to meet you there so you could tell them what had happened. You were risking everything for your new friends and you could only hope that they would forgive you for being a Changeling and for spying on them, not like you’d told Strickler anything.

Jim answered the door and you took a deep breath and put a smile on, though it probably looked more like a grimace.

“Is everything alright?” Jim asked at the same time Toby asked, “How’d you get that bruise?”

“It’s a long story.” You took a shaky breath. “It’s actually what I’m here to tell you about.”

“Oh, uh, come in,” Jim said, stepping away from the door. You walked inside and moved to the living room taking a seat on the soft couch. The house was warm and cozy, much better than the sewers.

“You guys are my friends right?”

“Yeah, of course Y/n,” Jim affirmed, concern shining on his face.

“Okay, so I also have some old...friends, bad friends and I’ve decided to cut them off,” you started, thinking that you’d slowly get to telling them about being a changeling, you were scared about how they’d react.

Toby nodded, “Okay.”

“You guys have met these ‘friends’ and now that I’ve broken it off, they’ve threatened to kill us,” you explained, avoiding their eyes and looking out the window.

Toby tilted his head. “Wait, you’ve lost me.”

You sighed, building up the confidence to explicitly say it. “The ‘friend’ is Bular and company, I used to work for him.” Toby and Jim gasped. “I don’t anymore though, I quit, they’re really horrible and I couldn’t stay any longer. I’d prefer to help you guys, I’ve only known you for a little while, but you’ve been nicer to me then they ever were.”

Silence filled the room as Toby and Jim processed your words. You squeezed your eyes shut, hoping that they wouldn’t kick you out. You’d be dead if they did, Bular wouldn’t spare you and while you could fight you were in doubt that you could beat the gumm-gumm prince.

“So you’re a changeling?” Jim finally asked. You opened your eyes and saw that the boys’ expressions weren’t hostile. You sucked in a breath, hope filling your heart as you nodded.

“Awesome sauce!” Toby exclaimed and you smiled, letting out the breath you’d been holding.

“Wait, did Bular give you that bruise?” Jim asked, concerned.

“Yeah, I confronted him earlier this morning,” you admitted.

Toby frowned. “You should put some ice on that.” He stood and walked into the kitchen.

“Are you okay?” Jim asked.

You nodded. “I feel better than I have in a very long time. I feel free.”

Jim gave a small smile, but things quickly fell into silence. You just sort of sat their fidgeting with your hands, wondering what to do or say.

Eventually you broke the silence. “I’m really sorry for spying.”

Jim looked up at you. “It’s fine Y/n, really. You were just doing what you had to.”

You tilted your head at Jim and pursed your lips. “Really? ‘Cause when you found out about Strickler you weren’t exactly happy.”

“Well, Strickler didn’t switch sides.”

“True. Though he’s really missing out.”

You and Jim laughed as Toby came back with a bag of frozen peas. Pressing the cold bag to your bruise you asked, “So what now?”

“We should tell Blinky and Aaarrrgghh, they’ll know what to do,” Jim suggested, getting up.

You and Toby stood as well, but before they could get to the door you called out, “Wait. I just wanted to thank the two of you for being my friends, it really means a lot.”

“Of course,” Jim said as he and Toby smiled. You smiled too, grateful for this new chapter in your life.

You looked up from your phone to Douxie and smiled. “Our reputation for legitimate psychics is getting pretty good,” you announced.

“Enough to go to a nicer hotel?” Archie asked from Douxie's shoulder as you levitated your one bag off the ship.

You grinned, your eyes lighting up. “Yep! No more disgusting motels!”

“Will it be warm?” Nari asked, shivering a bit despite the fact she was wrapped in your jacket.

“Yes, and we can get some better clothes too,” you promised as Douxie compressed the ship.

“I’m assuming you have a hotel in mind?” Douxie asked, smiling at you once he was done.

You nodded excitedly. “Follow me!”

“Pillows!” You exclaimed, flopping onto the soft bed. You closed your eyes to just enjoy being surrounded by the soft white mounds of fluff. Mao jumped onto the bad and landed on your stomach. You let out a cough as you adjusted her position and began to stroke her soft fur. You had made a pit stop to collect her and a few necessities from your mom’s house before you had left.

You heard the heater start up in the corner and sighed. It was nice having a job and money, you were really glad Douxie had had the idea to become traveling psychics. With your growing reputation it was becoming a rather lucrative idea. You’d need the money for nice, heated hotels with winter coming.

It would be your first official winter too, living in Arcadia all your life meant you hadn’t seen much snow. There were some snowy places in California, but you’d never seen them while it was snowing. You were kinda excited.

You sat up, gently moving Mao to sit beside you. Looking around at the room you had to admit it was rather nice.

“I like it here,” Nari announced, stating your thoughts out loud as she sat under the heater.

“I do too,” you agreed, sitting up. “Though, as much as I don’t want to leave, we should probably go shopping for dinner and other necessities.”

Douxie shook his head, “You stay here with Nari and I’ll get the basics.”

“Aww, Doux, you don’t have to.”

“No, it’s fine, you found the hotel, I’ll find dinner.”

You smiled gratefully. “Thank you.”

Douxie nodded, gave you a quick goodbye and left. You turned on the TV and flopped back onto the bed. A news report appeared on the screen and you muted it, not wanting to listen to the newest depressing thing that had happened. You surfed through the channels, not exactly having one in mind. A movie sounded good, but you weren’t feeling drawn to any of the ones that were on.

As you made your way through the channels you began to grow bored, wondering if you should splurge and buy a movie. You quickly abandoned that plan though as your scrolling came to Hallmark Channel.

A Timeless Christmas was on next and you smiled. It was one you hadn’t seen, but the time travel aspect definitely piqued your interest.

Right before the movie started Douxie walked in balancing two grocery bags and two steaming cups of what smelled like hot chocolate. You took the bags and set them on the little table in the corner.

“Thanks love,” he said, giving you a quick kiss. “I got your favorite hot cocoa too.”

“Aww, thanks.” You opened the bags, rummaging through them to see a bunch of instant noodles, some popcorn, some salmon treats for Archie, some strawberries, as well as a bunch of other necessities and snacks.

“What’re you watching?” Douxie asked as you turned back to him and took a sip of your drink, letting out a quiet hum of approval. Douxie had found some really good hot cocoa, and it warmed your heart that he remembered how you liked it.

“It’s a time travel romance,” you said, giggling.

Douxie chuckled. “Sounds interesting.”

“Yeah, I could only imagine what it’s like,” you joked.

Douxie laughed and pressed play as you hopped into the bed next to him. The hot cocoa kept your hands toasty as you laid your head down on Douxie’s shoulder and watched the movie.

You eventually ate dinner and once the movie(which was pretty good)was over you decided to go on a walk with Douxie.

Your hands were intertwined as you walked down the street to the park near the hotel. The night was dark, with only street lamps to guide you. The stars were hidden by pollution and you found yourself missing the clear skies of the past. The one you and Douxie had danced under had been especially spectacular, the stars had glittered marvelously above you. The moment was a fond one in your memory.

It had technically been nine hundred years since then, you wished you had thought to take the dress with you, but even though you didn’t have any souvenirs, you were happy that you had Douxie.

You looked up to him and smiled. “I’m glad I came with you,” you suddenly said, gently squeezing his hand.

He smiled down at you. “Me too.”

A/n: If y’all couldn’t tell by now, I suck at thinking up titles.

“What are you gonna do now, Y/n?” Aang asked as you looked out over the party with the rest of the group. You were the only one who was undecided about their plans after the war, but now that you'd had some time to think, you knew.

“I’m staying here,” you announced, smiling at Zuko. He gave a small smile back as you continued, “There isn’t anything left for me back home since somebody *cough* Zuko *cough* burned it down.”

He frowned at you. “How many times do I have to apologize for that?”

You considered the question. “Oh, I don’t know, forever?” You chuckled. “I don’t mind though, it led to me meeting my best friend.”

Zuko smiled again as you gave him a quick hug. “I need a new advisor if you're up for it.”

“Challenge accepted.”

For a while you all talked, finally enjoying yourselves. It was really nice, but eventually you were all pulled away to go and join the party. Duty called.

As you made your way from person to person, they each congratulated you on your appointment as Zuko’s advisor. Some were less genuine than others, obviously upset that they hadn’t gotten the position.

All of it made you a little nervous and when you finally pulled away from a not so genuine couple, you made your way to Zuko. You wanted to dance and why do it with a stranger when you could do it with your best friend?

You were a third of the way to Zuko when you felt a tap on your shoulder. You snapped around, months of traveling with the gaang made you expect a fight, but instead you found a man a little older than you standing there.

“You’re Y/n, right? Zuko’s advisor?” He asked.

You nodded, giving him your default charming smile. “I am.”

“Nice to meet you, I’m Lee.” He bowed and you quickly mimicked him. “I’m hoping to be on the council.”

“Oh? Where are you from?” You asked, trying to make conversation as you looked for Zuko again. He had moved in the brief time you had spoken to Lee.

“A small village that you’ve probably never heard of near another small that you’ve probably never heard of. All of the town leaders elected me to come here.”

You nodded, finally spotting Zuko. “Maybe I’ll put in a good word for you, but for now, it was nice meeting you.”

“Nice meeting you too, Y/n,” he said and you let out a sigh of relief as you left. It was so stressful just to talk to people now. They always wanted something and while Lee seemed kind it was hard to be sure.

You pushed your anxieties away though as you finally found Zuko.

“Enjoying the party?” You asked after he’d finished talking to a couple.

“If you can call it that.”

“Well, let’s remedy that. Come dance, it’ll be fun.”

Zuko nodded, offering an arm to lead you out to the dance floor.

“Iroh!” You greeted the old man with a bright smile and a hug. It had been a few months since you’d last seen him and you missed him and his cheerful energy. And not only that, having him around always made Zuko happier.

“Y/n, it’s good to see you again. I hope you’ve been well?”

“Of course, I love the Fire Nation, especially with what we’ve done with it. Zuko’s been great!”

“Speaking of him, where is my nephew?”

“I’m here, Uncle!” Zuko called, speeding down the steps and immediately hugging Iroh. “How have you been?”

“Wonderful! The tea shop is as busy as ever.” He smiled. “How are you? I hear you’re pretty busy too.”

“Incredibly,” you agreed with a tired smile.

Iroh nodded understandingly. “Well, now that I’m here it’s time for some fun!”

The three of you turned to walk back into the palace, but a servant came rushing down the steps. “Your Majesty! Lady Y/n!”

“Yes?” Zuko asked after they had bowed.

“There’s a problem, an emergency meeting had to be scheduled.”

You sighed, but Iroh just chuckled. “Work never really takes a break.”

“Would you like to join us?” You asked.

“Will there be tea?” Iroh asked, earning a laugh from you.

“Whatever you’d like,” Zuko confirmed as you made your way to the meeting room.

You walked inside and took your seat next to Zuko, waving at those who had already arrived. Lee, who had been appointed to the council, waved back and moved to take a seat next to you as Iroh took the seat across from you.

You leaned over to Zuko. “Do you have any clue what this is about?”

“No,” he whispered back.

You sighed. “It’s probably something bad.”

Zuko was cut off from answering as a younger general, Xu, stood to address the room. He began to speak and you listened intently as he discussed a problem with the colonies: some people didn’t want to acknowledge that Zuko was the Firelord, instead they were choosing to follow ‘Firelord Azula’.

It was a problem you’d heard of before and you wondered why Xu was bringing it up now, in an emergency meeting, on your day off.

Just as you were about to voice your question Xu answered it. “Some of the leaders of the colonies have come here and we are worried that they might try something...drastic,” Xu stated.

Zuko nodded thoughtfully and you spoke up. “What do you think about giving them a tour of all the good things that Firelord Zuko has done? Maybe then they will see that he isn’t all bad?”

“Sounds like a great idea!” Lee exclaimed from your right and Zuko nodded in agreement, though there was a frown on his face. You gave him a reassuring smile and he gave a small one back.

“And you should add some more guards to Azula’s cell,” Iroh added. “But don’t let her know about this. I know that my niece is crafty, if she has hope she will act on it.”

With those decisions made, the meeting went on smoothly and you were able to get out of it relatively fast.

As people filed out of the room you turned to Zuko and Iroh. “I’m going to run up to my office real quick. I want to send a hawk to everyone about this.”

Zuko nodded. “Meet us by the turtle duck pond?”

“Yep,” you moved to leave the room, but Lee grabbed your attention.

“You know you have such amazing ideas, why do you always look to Zuko to make sure he approves?” He asked, putting his hands on your shoulders.

You gave him an incredulous look as you gently moved away. “He’s the Firelord, he has the final say on bigger matters and I’d prefer us to be on the same page.”

“His uncle didn’t ask for approval to move guards to Azula’s cell.”

“We would have moved guards to Azula’s cell no matter what, Iroh just so happened to be the one to say it.” Lee opened his mouth to argue more, but you continued, “Maybe we can talk about this another time,” you suggested, backing away. Though, by ‘another time’ you meant never.

Lee nodded. “How about at dinner tonight?”

You shook your head and gave him a fake smile. “I have plans.” With that final statement you turned around and quickly left the room. While Lee typically made you feel more comfortable in meetings, this time he was doing anything but.

You were halfway down the long hallway when you realized that you had forgotten your notes. You sighed turning around, you’d need them to write a letter to your friends. You wanted to give them as many facts as possible so they could decide what to do.

Your footsteps echoed ominously in the hall and you realized how uninviting and creepy they seemed. It was another thing you’d have to talk to Zuko about.

You pushed aside your thoughts and slowed down as you heard slightly raised voices in the meeting room. Two you immediately recognized as Zuko’s and Iroh’s, but third, Lee’s, took you a little longer.

“You were clearly making her uncomfortable,” Zuko stated and you could tell that he was irritated.

“Maybe you were just uncomfortable thinking about Y/n and I dating?” Lee asked.

“You don’t care about her, you just want power,” Zuko argued.

You heard Lee scoff. “Maybe I do. I would be a better Firelord than you. I’m beginning to think it’s your family that’s the problem, you’ll just lead this country to ruin.”

You let out a quiet huff of annoyance. The result of many late night chats with Zuko had led you to know one of his greatest fears: failing. You scowled though no one could see you. How dare Lee say that? You had half a mind to challenge him to an Agni Kai right here and now.

A few calming breaths later led you to remember that you weren’t a fire bender and neither was Lee. However, you still weren’t above fighting him after what he had just said to your best friend. You did not appreciate Lee speaking to him like that.

Zuko was handling it though. “Leave,” he ordered and you could hear the glare in his voice.

“W-What?” Lee asked, all of his fight gone.

“I said, leave. If you are going to disrespect Y/n and I then you don’t have a place in this meeting room or in this palace.”

You didn’t hear anything else as you hid in an alcove by the door. Lee walked out of the room and you could see he was seething, you’d never seen him that angry and you were glad he couldn’t see you. You did not want to talk to him.

You moved back to the door to head inside, but Iroh spoke, “I’ll have some guards escort him out.”

“Thank you.” Zuko’s voice moved away from the door. “Do you think I was overreacting?”

“No,” Iroh stated. “You were concerned for Y/n, I can see how much you like her.”

“What? No!” Zuko protested. “She’s my best friend.”

“She’s not more than a friend?” Iroh asked teasingly.

“I-I don’t know,” Zuko admitted much to your surprise.

You couldn’t imagine Zuko liking you, it was a miracle you were friends after the way you had met. Could you even be more than friends? If you really thought about it you weren’t opposed to the idea.

A chair creaked. “I’ll leave you to think about it,” Iroh said.

“I’ll meet you at the turtle duck pond,” Zuko responded, his voice distant, as the door opened.

“Hi,” You said, slightly embarrassed that you had been found listening.

“You should talk to him,” Iroh advised, a kind smile on his face.

You nodded, pushing open the door. “Hey Zuko.”

“Y/n? H-how much did you hear?”

“All of it,” you admitted feeling your face heat up.

“Oh, um-“

You cut him off. “Thank you for defending me.”

“Of course.”

You smiled at him. “About what I heard after that...”

“Oh, that,” He repeated, flustered.

“Mhmm,” you proded.

“Well, I-I guess I like you then.”

You chuckled at how spontaneous this situation was, but quickly realized it wasn’t a good idea. You moved over and sat in the chair next to Zuko. Taking his hands you beamed at him. “I like you too...even if you burned down my village.”

He groaned. “I’d like you a lot more if you’d stop binging that up.”

“It’s all a part of our story, the good and the bad.”
