What exists on those plates is toxic, processed, full of chemicals and it’s getting worse. The USDA is proposing to reduce the rules for school lunch and breakfast that promote nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Under the proposed revision: - A processed vegetable-based pasta could be considered a vegetable. - A hash brown could replace fresh fruit. - Slices of pizza could replace a balanced meal. If the answer to feeding our children is fried and ultra-processed foods, it shows how out of touch we are with the truth that food is the source of healing and instead what we serve kids is the source of disease. 46% of kids today have a chronic disease by the age of 18 and we have the opportunity to shift this paradigm. The sixty-day public comment period is currently open on this new proposed change to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). It’s funny how @publix claims their fisheries and stores are sustainable, yet they still sell sharks! The last time I was in contact with them, they said they would get me through to their Fisheries Board. That was September 2019. I never heard back. So, tomorrow I’m sending off a handwritten letter detailing my concerns for both human health, and shark sustainability. I’ll be requesting a meeting also. I have no problem with local fishermen fishing sharks (with following the law and catch limit). They have the right to do so and I understand that. I do though have a problem with big corporations mass-selling one of the most important species, who are on the brink of almost becoming endangered/extinct. Repost from The incredibly hard working Conservationist and fortunately one of my best friends! @shawnheinrichs BLOOD (warning - graphic images) I stared down upon the factory floor in disbelief and horror as the bodies of literally thousands of lifeless sharks piled up, the blood from their grizzly wounds streaming into pools that accumulated on the cold concrete floors. Along the port, a dozen massive industrial long-line vessels were tied up, each with factory cranes extracting a seemingly endless procession of dead sharks from their ominous cargo holds. The roar of forklifts spewing black exhaust filled the air, as they rumbled back-and-forth from the vessels to the factory, dumping stack-upon-stack of sharks on the blood-soaked factory floor. Then a platoon of factory workers wielding razor sharp knives set upon the sharks in earnest, systematically hacking their fins off, leaving a shocking trail of carnage in their wake. My mind struggled to make sense of what I was witnessing - the unfathomable scale, the savagery, my heartbreak and outrage - darkness consumed my soul. All told the bodies of over 7,000 sharks were landed that day, and we were told this number was below the daily average of 10,000 sharks - some 3 Million sharks per year - in just one port amongst hundreds of factory ports across the world that were strip-mining our Oceans. This was truly that face of the 100 Million, the 100 Million sharks that are slaughtered each-and-every year across our oceans, fueled by the insatiable demand for their fins and body parts. The year was 2010 and I knew with absolute clarity the work that lay ahead for me. . Did you know, 2019 saw the lowest number of wild sockeye salmon return to the B.C. coast in history? In the Fraser River, 90% fewer sockeye returned than was forecasted by @fisheriesoceanscan. During their annual journey, sockeye and other threatened species of wild salmon must swim past open-net fish farms that spew a harmful virus called piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) into their migration route.⁣ ⁣ Two years ago, B.C.’s salmon farming industry was caught dumping virus-infected blood into Discovery Passage, a critical area for returning wild salmon. Recent dives in November 2019 by @tavishcampbell have shown the blood is still flowing and is still infected with PRV. This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in B.C.⁣ ⁣ @justinpjtrudeau committed to removing fish farms from the ocean by 2025. Help ensure this promise is kept.
