More detailed update
So i have been fostering my dads pink kissing Gourami bc he could no longer keep him in his tank, as he was getting beat up by the larger and more aggressive fish and it was noticeably taking a toll on him.
When we first put him in my tank, he had injuries from being housed with larger, meaner fish and did not look well. At the time the move was supposed to be temporary until he was better. Ultimately it was decided that Gus would not go back into either of my dad's tanks. I agreed, but at the same time, i had not agreed to take him permanently, and i had wanted Boiúna to have the whole tank. There was discussion of when/if Gus got better we would look into getting a 75gal, or take him back to the store.
In the meantime, he was moved to the 40gal for quarantine and treatment. He had injuries from the other fish, and i think he had started to get some sort of fungus? So. The 40 is too small for a long term home for him, so we put him in the 90gal w Boiúna after he was healed.
They did not seem to be fighting, both were getting food and water tested fine, i was worried that Gus (the gourami) wasnt done with whatever he had yet?? Or that he had or would've passed it to Boiúna, so everytime Boiúna was Out i would look at them as closely as i could to make sure they werent showing any signs of disease or other ailments.
As of Saturday, March 2nd 2019, i found Boiúna suddenly dead, i did not notice anything before to have expected or even worried about it. Gus appears fine, neither fish showed visible signs of fighting or injury being the cause, i dont know how it happened. Water tests showed everything was fine, nitrates a little high and the pH was a bit higher than id like, but it has been consistently that high of pH.
(Im probably coming across super cold rn bc thats like the only way i can talk abt this at all rn)
After all of this, i will be Keeping Gus in the 90 gallon, as the only reason i was opposed to it as a permanent thing beforehand is that i had wanted Boiúna to have the whole thing to themself, so there's no reason for him not to stay in it now.

Polypterus lapradei is one of the larger species of bichir.  Due to their poor eyesight,  they use smell to locate their food.

It’s a mess, but I like the jungle look. I have no idea how many of these plants will survive, but I figured I’d stock up on them early and try to get as many established as possible.
There’s two Dwarf sagittaria there on the left, which I’m hoping will get enough light and nutrients - their roots seemed very fragile so I’m crossing my fingers. At the far right corner is a bit of Italian val… they didn’t have jungle vals but to my understanding they are very similar, so we’ll see how those work out. If they try to take over, at least they’re easy to pull up. Scattered around are some anubias, with a bunch of Java fern there in the back, just tucked into the branches of spiderwood. There’s another plant that was growing next to the java ferns that the woman who helped me grabbed my mistake - it looks like Java fern but the leaves are pronged. I didn’t notice it until I was planting, so it was give it a try or throw it out.
F. Daneel Olivaw gives absolutely no fucks about anything at all and is not in the least bit shy of my hand. He swam between my fingers while I was making adjustments and I doubt he’d care if I touched him. He does, however, very much want to destroy the other F. Daneel Olivaw who lives as a ghostly image in the glass near the marimo ball and mimics him perfectly.
