By the time everyone has suited up and left, the only person Y/N saw was her father. He knocked on her room door and cautiously entered.
“We’re just about ready to head out, kiddo,” he greeted, taking steps towards her desk, where she sat staring blankly at the screen.
Y/N had long given up on trying to distract herself from the information just exposed to her. Of course, when she was younger, her father rarely mentioned her grandparents but when he did, he tried to keep things positive. When she had left and was living on her own, she researched them, but mentions of Hydra or assault were never mentioned. The reports made it seem as though their death was a one-off stout of bad luck.
“Y/N?” Tony asked, hoping to catch her attention.
Slowly, she turned in her chair to face her father. When she saw his concerned expression, she mustered up the best no-teeth smile she could.
“You’ll be alright here on your own?” he asked, resting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
She nodded, maintaining her smile.
“If you need anything, you know how to contact me. If you need anything at all, just call Happy and he’ll come running.”
You chuckled ever-so-slightly at his words and replied, “I’ll be fine. You just make sure to be safe out there.”
“I’ll try, kid.”
With that, Tony squeezed her shoulder once more and strolled out the room. When the door shut behind him, she let her mind get accustomed to the echoing silence as it engulfed her and make her one of its own.
--
It was almost an entire week since the team had been gone; Tony checked in every now and then, but most of her time was spent letting her mind run wild with possibilities of new projects. If she wasn’t in her room, she was in the lab for hours on end.
Happy made the rounds in the building and most times, Y/N was so engrossed in her work that she didn’t even notice him and if she did, a wave was all he got as acknowledgement.
Y/N was sure that Happy was reporting her introverted-ness to her father, but she couldn’t be bothered. She clouded her emotions and personal concerns with work, software coding, machinery ideas and design patterns. The only conversations she had were mental communications with Skye as she worked, and when she cursed out loud at the slightest mistake or prick of pain.
Another day passed and this time, Skye was the one to change the topic of work just as Y/N was about to adjust the power source on her wristband. She was in the lab once again when Skye piped up.
“The team has returned, Y/N,” Skye said, causing Y/N’s hand to stop mid-air. Skye went on to say, “Tony is already asking Happy about you; Bucky is listening in close by.”
Y/N let out a shuddered breath as she felt her heart rate rise. “How long till they get here?”
“Roughly 7 minutes.”
Y/N cursed verbally and rose to her feet. She paced furiously as she tried to think of a way out. While she wanted to welcome her father back, she couldn’t bear to see Bucky’s face. All this time away from them, her emotions were forced behind a mental wall and now that they returned, that wall was crumbling, brick by bloody brick.
By the time she pushed the entry door to the lab in an attempt to make a quick get-away, she was stopped short. In front of her, just in front of the entrance, Bucky stood with a hesitant expression clouding his face.
“Hey, Y/N,” Bucky muttered.
She stood shock-still, staring at the soldier. She mentally cursed Skye for giving her false information.
“We just got back,” Bucky continued, trying to keep eye contact with her.
Y/N nodded and finally mustered, “Did you all get through with everything over there?”
“Y-yeah, everything was alright; no major injuries.”
“That’s good, then.” Y/N rocked ever-so-slightly on the heels of her feet, letting the awkwardness of the moment settle in.
“We should talk...about everything.”
“We should, perhaps after you’ve settled in and cleaned up.” Y/N couldn’t help but notice the marks of dust and debris on his face that continued into the collar of his suit.
“Sure, later then.” Bucky turned to head off deeper into the building.
Y/N remained in the doorway for a moment more, already mentally trying to prepare herself for that that was to come.
Despite everything that had happened, Y/N knew she’d have to make peace in order to live calmly at the headquarters. Bucky had become her closest friend in the building and she didn’t want anything serious to come between them.
She needed to hear his side of the story before she committed to a reaction.

It took a week for Bucky to get used to all the tricks and uses of his new and improved arm. For the most part, Y/N was at his side, assisting him whenever she could.
It was not lost on Tony that his daughter was becoming increasingly more tolerable of the soldier. Whenever he monitored the two of them together, he noticed how much calmer and care-free she looked, and Bucky was definitely more upbeat and enthusiastic around her.
Despite working with Bucky for the past year or so, there was always that ticking at the back of his mind that held a grudge against Bucky for what he had done to his parents. Tony wasn’t sure if Y/N knew what had happened to her grandparents, but she never asked.
Apart from that throbbing grudge, the other thing that bothered Tony was this pang of jealously whenever he saw the two of them together. Tony had brought his daughter to the grounds in hope of rekindling their relationship and making amends for the past, but all of her attention seemed to be focused on the soldier.
To Y/N, she was well aware of the shift in how Bucky spent his time. Rather than train with Steve in the day and check in with her for about 20 minutes in the evening, he swapped the two so that most of the day was spent with her. In between science-talk, Bucky shared stories of his younger days with Steve  and the funnier war stories from before he got the iron arm. After a week of those interactions, Y/N found it difficult to imagine spending her day any other way.
Tony, on the other hand, needed to make some adjustments to their dynamic.
It was a gloomy Wednesday morning when Tony gathered the team of heroes and his daughter. They met on the ground floor and Tony kept his gaze averted from his daughter’s puzzled eyes.
Once everyone gathered and quieted, Tony began speaking. “Okay, I know you have all been training and keeping up with your various regiments, but there’s something we need to check out.” Tony turned and a projected hologram appeared on the tall wall behind him.
The images shown were of tattered buildings and suffering human beings. It tugged at all their heartstrings but the rage seeped through when images of an overlord with suspicious futuristic tech appeared.
Tony paused the playback and said, “That’s the dude we need to go after. I need all of you in on this.”
There were nods and mutters of agreement throughout the crowd.
“What about Y/N?” Bucky asked, piping up.
Tony directed his gaze to Bucky who, as expected, stood daringly close to his daughter’s side. “Y/N will remain here; she’s not a part of the Avengers.”
“But she can help,” Bucky countered.
“Yes, I know that, but I would prefer to keep my only child out of this business.”
“Tony-” Y/N began, but was cut off by Bucky’s insistence.
“She’s one of us now and she can keep us safe.”
Y/N placed a warning hand on Bucky’s iron arm. Tony didn’t miss a second of movement between them. He took a step closer to the pair and said through clenched teeth, “You better watch it, Barnes. Unlike you, I'm trying to keep her safe.”
“So, what am I doing? Trying to get her killed?”
The tension was palpable in the room while everyone surrounding the trio seemed to wait for the big bang to happen.
Tony took a deep breath and replied, “She wouldn’t be the first Stark you got killed.”
“Tony!” Steve exclaimed, breaking Tony’s stare on Bucky.
Bucky, on the other hand, looked towards the ground, lost in a mix of regret and self-hating rage.
“Wh-what does that mean?” Y/N asked.
Bucky twitched as though finally remembering that she was there at his side.
Tony turned back to his daughter but before he could reveal the truth, Steve pushed forward. “Tony, don’t. This won’t do any of us any good, especially Y/N.”
Instead of listening to Cap’s voice of reason, Tony acted on pure emotion. Keeping eye contact with his daughter, Tony said, “That soldier whose arm you helped improve and make more dangerous, he murdered your grandparents, my parents. He was acting under Hydra and he followed them, trapped them, murdered them and stole from them. That’s the kind of person you’ve been spending all your precious time with.”
Y/N’s face crumbled in puzzlement. She took a step away from Bucky but moved to face him. “Is that true?”
Bucky couldn’t bring himself to look at her; he knew the accusations would burst from her eyes no matter what he said. Instead, he stayed quiet and averted his eyes.
From that sheer body language, Y/N got her confirmation. She took other steps away from the soldier.  Before departing the room, she glanced around at everyone and said, “Be safe out there, you all.” Then, she was up the stairs, already mentally demanding for Skye to find out the truth.

The first sensation that awoke Y/N was a heavy, cold touch along her forearm and wrist. Slowly, her eyelids skittled open and she saw the shiny metal of Bucky’s new arm gliding along her arm.
The moment she began shifting to sit upright, Bucky pulled his arm away and began to sit on the resting table.
Y/N took a moment to center herself, letting the sleepy senses slip away from her.
When she looked over at Bucky, their eyes met and he offered a warm smile.
“Good morning,” Bucky welcomed.
Y/N nodded and replied, “Hey, I’m just gonna freshen up and then we’ll discuss how you’re doing.”
Bucky nodded but Y/N had already turned away and was heading for the exit.
After splashing some water on her face and brushing her teeth, Y/N re-did her hair in a ponytail and took a deep breath, making a mental checklist of what she had to check with Bucky.
When she returned to the lab/operating area, Bucky was standing, rummaging through the loose blueprints that littered the table near the projector.
“You really shouldn’t be moving around,” Y/N said, causing Bucky to turn to face her, letting the papers return to the tabletop.
With a smirk, Bucky responded, “I got some remodeling done; I didn’t get a transplant.”
Y/N strolled up to him and rest a gentle hand on his shoulder, ushering him to the operating bed.
While she started up the projector and signaled Skye to prepare for thorough checks, Bucky kept his eyes on her, merely watching her as she moved.
With a breath, Y/N instructed Skye, “Okay, let’s check everything to make sure that nothing’s shifted or been damaged.”
Once Skye began the scan, Y/N met Bucky’s eyes and finally asked, “So, how does the arm feel?”
Glancing at the arm, Bucky replied, “It feels pretty good, definitely stronger. I’m pretty excited to play around with it and see what it can really do.”
Y/N smiled slightly and took the metal forearm in her hands.
“Plus, it looks really cool,” Bucky remarked.
“Well, I'm glad you like it.”
Skye interrupted their conversation by noting, “The operation was successful and all power sources are up to capacity. The device is ready for use.”
With that confirmation, Bucky jumped to his feet and announced, “Good enough for me. Let’s see what it can do.”
Before she knew it, Bucky was rushing out of the door, heading to the training field, running on pure eagerness and adrenalin.
The moment he arrived at the Archery section, Y/N was almost out of breath trying to catch up with him. On the way, Lang, Steve and Tony caught whiff of the action and strutted over to observe Bucky.
Even from a little distance away, one could see the pure eagerness that lit the soldier’s face. He moved to stand in-line with one of the targets and raised the arm in front of him. With his eyes locked on the target, he was ready to proceed.
There was a feature that Y/N installed but hadn’t yet told Bucky. With Skye’s help and expertise, she implanted a connector from the arm weaponry to his nerve system, much like how she had first made Skye. This meant that even with a mere thought, Bucky could control the arm to do pretty much anything he wanted.
The arm lit up and shot a straight, precise beam of energy across the yard, making perfect contact with the target. The surrounding men looked on in awe and admiration. Even Tony looked genuinely impressed.
Bucky’s previously upbeat expression change to puzzlement as he turned to face Y/N. “I barely moved anything, was that supposed to happen?”
Y/N nodded and took a few steps closed to him. Once his focus was solely on her words, Y/N explained the connection system she set up and Bucky nodded along every now and then, showing that he understood. By the time she was done, the other men gathered around and were listening in.
“So, I just have to think it and it’ll work?” Bucky asked for confirmation.
“Yup, pretty much.”
“That’s...impressive. I hadn’t thought of that option,” Tony noted.
Steve lay a strong hand on his friend’s shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile. “It’s like you’re a whole new soldier, Buck.”
Even Lang was offering praises of encouragement, but Y/N kept her eyes on Bucky, who was now staring at his arm, no doubt wondering what kind of damage the new arm could do in times of crisis.
Suddenly, Bucky’s head snapped up and his eyes met Y/N’s. Within two steps, he was right in front of her and used his human arm to bring her closer to him. His arms wrapped around her, holding her close.
Against her ear, he uttered, “Thank you, Y/N. I knew you were capable, but I didn’t expect this. Seriously, thank you.”
Y/N smiled and managed to nod.
From beside them, Tony cleared his throat. Bucky caught on and gently pulled away. Turning to his daughter, Tony warned, “We should still check in with the arm every now and then to see if there are any issues.”
“Of course,” Y/N agreed.
With that, the three on-lookers turned away and returned to their respective tasks. When they were alone, Bucky didn’t back away; he wanted to stay next to her.
Noticing this, Y/N nervously muttered, “I-I should probably get back and clean up the lab a little.”
As she turned on her heel, she felt Bucky’s arm grasp her forearm, pulling her back. With mere force, she returned facing him.
Bucky watched as her shocked and widened eyes bore into his. He raised his human arm to rest gently against her jaw and cheek. Wordlessly, he inched forward and ever-so-gently placed a warming kiss against her cheek. Y/N’s eyes widened as her heartbeat echoed in her ears. When Bucky pulled back and met her gaze, he smiled smugly.
His fingertips traced down her arm as he turned away, no doubt rushing off to do more practice field tests with his fellow soldiers. Y/N stood in the open field, taking a moment to readjust her mind. Out of the initial shock emerged contentment; if he hadn’t kissed her, she would have surely pursued it later on.
At least now, she had enough courage to initiate the next encounter.

Another day passed and Y/N hadn’t seen Tony since the forest incident. Contrastingly, she bumped into Bucky more often than ever.
Every time she went to get coffee in the lounge area, she’d see him strolling around making meaningless conversation with whomever else was nearby. She felt his eyes on her, but she never looked his way to confirm her suspicions.
It was only as Y/N decided one afternoon to clear her head by taking a strut around the grounds that Bucky approached her directly. She passed right past the archery portion of the training grounds and Bucky abandoned his task and jogged over to her.
“Hey, Y/N!” he hollered, causing her to stop in her tracks and turn to him.
Once she was facing him, his pace slowed.
“You ever gonna experiment on me, or what?” he asked, a slight smirk playing at his mouth.
Y/N quietly cleared her throat before responding. “Sure. Come by the lab on the third floor later and we can discuss the idea.”
Seeming content, Bucky smiled and nodded. “Later, then.”
“Alright,” she replied, offering a nod in return.
Bucky stood in place for a moment more, not ready to leave just yet. It was only when Steve yelled out to him that his attention snapped back to the training and he turned away from the young Stark.
-
Before she knew it, there was a knock at the lab’s door. She snapped her head from the screens in front of her to face the entrance of the room. Meeting her eyes, Bucky pushed open the door, flashing a welcoming smile.
“Hey,” he said simply.
Y/N took a step closer and offered a polite wave.
When Bucky reached within arm’s reach, he spoke again. “So, what’s going on here?” His eyes glanced between hers and the diagrams on the screen behind her.
Y/N returned to the screens, wondering where to start. Although she understood the screens, she figured that a holographic image of her idea would be better understood by the soldier.
Ever so casually, Y/N mentally instructed Skye to project the blue-prints onto the display at the center of the room. The two turned towards the display and Y/N took a subtle breath to steady herself.
Bucky leaned towards the image, letting his eyes roam and trying to make sense of it all. Sensing his utter confusion, Y/N hurried to explain.
As her hands touched the holographic image, Skye worked with her to follow her explanation. Slowly but surely, Y/N worked her way through explaining how she would begin with getting into the basic foundation of the arm and then moved on to discuss the steps to alter the arm with Tony’s technology.
Just as she ended her monologue, Bucky finally spoke. He blinked intensely before asking, “So, basically, you’re going to rip into the arm and rebuild it from the start?”
Y/N’s eyebrows rose in surprise; that was the general idea, yes. She nodded, confirming his summary.
Bucky clasped his hands together and announced, “Great, so when do we start?”
Taking a cautious step towards him, Y/N muttered, “I should warn you; this could be quite painful for you. I tried to find the best way to make the alterations and this seemed like the one.”
Bucky closed the gap between them and placed his hands on her shoulders. Matching her gaze, he said with unblinking eyes, “There is no one here I trust more than you to do this. No matter how much it hurts, I won’t run away. The only way I'm backing out of this is if you’re no longer in charge. The only person I want messing around with this arm is you.”
She wasn’t sure what raised her confidence more: his words or his eyes. His aura alone was more than enough to convince her that she was about to undergo something great and his eagerness and support made her feel secure.
--
There was no doubt in her mind; this was by far one of the most challenging processes she’d ever undergone. From the get-go, Bucky was calm and collected. She caught him twitched every now and again when she began clearing the path to begin the installation. Nevertheless, he remained silent and patient throughout the entire experience.
She wasn’t sure how long they’d been in the lab for, but the darkened sky that welcomed her outside was enough to give her a rough estimate.
When she was satisfied with the result and Skye confirmed that the arm was fully upgraded and successfully stable, Y/N finally let out a sigh of relief. She had her doubts of her own abilities, but once Skye gave those assurances, she was confident that she’d done her best.
By the end of everything, with Bucky’s arm closed up and settling in, he’d fallen asleep. With a reassuring snore, Y/N smiled at her patient and quietly exited the lab.
Just as the door shut behind her, Tony bustled over.
“So, how’d it go?” he asked, letting his excitement known.
Y/N turned to her father and replied, “It took a while, but I got through it. Skye also helped and made sure that everything was properly taken care of.”
Tony nodded. “And the result?”
“I implemented your Iron Man tech into his arm along with a transmitter as an energy source. It all looks solid, but we’ll have to wait until he wakes up to see how he adapts.”
Without words, Tony stepped towards his daughter and embraced her. Over her head, he muttered, “I am so incredibly proud of you, kid.”
Maybe it was because she was exhausted from the operation, or pleasantly relieved at what she’d just accomplished, but her eyes began watering. A few tears escaped but she maintained herself. When Tony pulled away, their eyes met and she sought comfort in seeing her father’s own emotional eyes.
Rounding the corner, Steve appeared with Lang close behind. Steve’s gaze only focused on Y/N as he approached.
“So, how was it?” Steve asked hurriedly.
“Everything went smoothly; we’ll see how he reacts when he wakes up.”
The soldier nodded and furrowed his brows, deep in his own thought. Tony clasped his hands together and announced that it was getting late and that they should leave Y/N to get her rest. They all complied, but once they were gone, Y/N returned to the lab, taking a seat next to Bucky’s recovering form.
She watched as his breath remained steady. As she was on his side with the iron arm, she admired the intricacies of the new design, glad to be rid of the previous dent-riddled covering. She gently passed her fingertips over the smooth protective surface, all the way down to the grips of the fingers.
Everything looked as she planned, she just needed him to wake up to confirm if it all operates as she planned.
She removed her hand and settled into her seat. As Skye dimmed the lights overhead, Y/N laid her head on the remaining space of the operating bed and closed her eyes, eagerly welcoming a deep slumber.

A light knock at her bedroom door was enough to make her realize that she’d been in her room for the majority of the morning. Just beyond the grounds, she could see the sun on its way to setting.
Skye automatically switched screens on the computer to hide what she’d been working on as Y/N swiveled in her chair to face the entrance door.
The door opened slightly and Tony’s head appeared. “Wanna see something cool?” The twinkle of excitement was more than enough to entice Y/N.
She rose to her feet and nodded, letting her eyes smile for her. From her mind, Skye also seemed eager.
Quickly, Y/N rushed out the door and was following her father out of the building, until they were at an oversized garage.
The doors were opened and Y/N stood speechless as her eyes roamed around the area, taking in the mix of vintage and modern car brands and designs. She’d known her father was a bit obsessed with cars, and this snippet of the collection just worked to reinforce that belief.
“Oh, not the cars,” Tony interrupted upon noticing his daughter stopped in her tracks.
“Oh, okay,” she said, returning to trail after him.
The two walked to the back of the garage which led to an even larger segment of the grounds that she’d never seen before. The wide expanse of land was the holding area for experimental jets and helicopters.
Even at that, Tony didn’t stop to comment; he kept walking deeper into the surrounding greenery, which began to look more like a forested area.
As Y/N followed close behind her father, the ground beneath her changed from well-maintained lawn to scattered vines and tree roots. About 2 minutes of walking among the tall, healthy trees, they came to a slight clearing.
Even Skye remained silent as to why they had stopped there. Finally, Tony sighed and clasped his hands together and turned to face his daughter.
“Lang?” Tony asked towards the air around them.
Y/N also glanced around, wondering what he was waiting for.
Suddenly, there was a slight movement behind Y/N.
“Yes, Mr. Stark, sir,” a voice sounded behind Y/N, too close for comfort.
She immediately jumped away, turning to face the voice. She calmed slightly upon noticing Scott Lang, known as Ant-Man.
Moving next to her, Tony chuckled at her shock.
“Oh, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Y/N Stark,” Scott said, inching a welcoming hand over to you.
Cautiously, she leaned forward to shake his hand. “Likewise, Mr. Lang.”
“Okay, although Scott’s entrance was admittedly cool, that’s not what I called you here for. Scott?” Tony asked, signaling for Scott to do something.
“Oh, right,” Scott said, suddenly catching on. Scott touched the right ear of his helmet and his brows creased in concentration.
Just as Y/N began to wonder what was happening, there was more movement around them. This time, it was the surrounding trees. They began shaking slowly at first, but began to speed up. Soon enough, entire trees began mobile, swaying around them.
Y/N took minuscule steps as she watched in childish awe at what was happening around her.
Tony piped up with an explanation. “Scott and I have been working on telepathic technology that could harvest the strength of not just ants, but almost all insects. When they come together, their strength is so great that they can move huge weights, such as these trees.”
Y/N didn’t need to glance at her father to know how smug he was with himself. She had to admit, it was really impressive.
“Of course, we’re still working to perfect all of it, but the progress has been amazing so far,” Scott noted, watching the trees in motion.
Another minute passed as the trio marveled at the sight around them.
Just as Tony was going on about the intricacies of the software, Scott sounded in alarm. “Oh, there’s a glitch.”
Tony stopped in his speech and snapped his gaze to Scott. “What kind of glitch, Lang?”
“Just a second of mis-communication, no need to worry,” Scott responded, trying to convince the others more than himself.
Y/N knew how dangerous the slightest of mis-communications could affect a moment. Almost as if she needed the reminder, a shadow loomed over her.
“No!” Scott exclaimed, staring with wide eyes at the impending doom behind Y/N.
Y/N swiveled quick enough to catch a glimpse of an aged tree leaning dangerously towards her.  Out of instinct, she pleaded for Skye to do something, anything.
Just as the shadow clouded her eyes, she felt herself being jerked towards something else. Just as sudden as Scott’s outburst, the motions in the forested area ceased, leaving only the sounds of their heavy breathing to surround them.
Y/N felt a grip on her waist tighten, and with wide eyes, she raised her head to meet the pressured eyes of Bucky. She followed his metal arm to see that the tree was stopped by his palm. His other arm was wrapped around Y/N, keeping her a safe distance away from the danger.
Once Bucky was confident that she was okay, he gently flung the tree off the perimeter of the clearing. However, his human arm remained at Y/N’s waist.
The first person to break the silence was Scott. With a nervous chuckle, he said, “Yep, definitely needs some configuring.”
Tony’s worried eyes gave his daughter a once-over but she wouldn’t meet his eyes. “Let’s get to it, then,” Tony remarked, already leaving the clearing with Scott close behind him.
Soon enough, it was just Y/N and Bucky remaining. Still, he didn’t say anything.
Y/N took a breath and moved to take her first step away from him. Unfortunately, her legs had other plans. The second her foot landed in front of the other, she stumbled; the shock still rippled through her. Luckily, Bucky was right there to grasp her once more.
She held out a hand towards him and muttered, “I’m fine.”
The soldier chuckled and replied, “Yeah, sure you are.”
She tried not to get annoyed at his damn chuckle. Instead, she asked, “How’d you even know to come out here?”
“I saw you guys walking out here and figured if that Scott Lang is involved, then anything could go wrong.”
Trying to push the shock away, she remained focused on the topic at hand. “Is Scott Lang normally so...mistaken?” Y/N took another step, this time being able to support herself. Slowly, Bucky’s hands slipped away from her as he watched her increase the distance between them.
“To be fair, Stark’s the scientist so any issue would be his doing.”
Y/N nodded, watching as Bucky’s eyebrows knitted in frustration. “Still, Lang was the one controlling them.”
His eyes snapped to hers as he replied, “So? A waiter isn’t responsible if the chef decides to cook with poison.”
The metaphor wasn’t lost on Y/N. It was clear that Bucky blamed Tony for the mishap.
Before she could say anything, he continued. “I mean, the guy made you move here, lured you in with high-tech stuff and then he doesn’t even apologize or ask if you’re okay when one of his own ideas almost kills you!”
Y/N watched as Bucky took cautious steps towards her.
Staring into her eyes, he uttered, “What if I wasn’t here to stop it? What if you’d gotten hurt?”
Y/N stared back at Bucky, trying to avoid the pure worry that he was relaying.
The more she thought about it, she didn’t hear or see Tony summon any Iron Man tech to save her, and Lang wasn’t much help either. As much as she hated to admit it, Bucky really did save her.
She sighed and looked off to the entrance of the woods, letting the sense of solidarity surround her mind. Looking back at Bucky, she said, “Thank you.”
His response was a mere nod.
Together, they strolled out of the woods in silence. There wasn’t much she wanted to do next, but she found comfort in knowing that someone, even if it was Bucky, was near to her to catch her should she fall.

A few days had past and that was more than enough for Y/N to get the general hang of things at the Headquarters. She saw her father at odd times, mostly just in passing through the halls or a small wave of acknowledgement out on the training grounds.
Most of her time was spent in the enormous lab, so much so that people began referring to it as her lab, rather than Tony’s. Having Skye around her constantly became more of a blessing than a burden. Having the program there came in handy when she began researching about Bucky’s background. Despite her urge to create something new and incredible, she couldn’t shake the need to impress her father by doing what he could not.
She’d pull all-nighters trying to get into the very basis of the structure of Bucky’s arm before she could figure out how to make alterations. She’d flit from the lab to her room, trying not to wake anyone.
On a couple of occasions, she’d pass Steve Rogers deep in thought in the lounge area, sipping on a mug of tea. Although she would have loved to discuss what was keeping him up so late, her mind always pulled her back to Bucky’s file.
The only thing that took her away from her work was handling her old apartment. Tony had Happy and a couple other people go to her apartment to pack up her stuff. Although she’d prefer to handle that on her own, Tony insisted on helping out.
Once she paid off her final month of living there, the Lease was dissolved and she was officially living at the Headquarters with the others.
About a week later, she had learnt just about everything of Bucky’s arm and was ready to begin making adjustments. As she began sketching out ideas, the lab door opened and shut.
“You do have your own room, you know,” Tony voiced, moving to stand over his daughter, quickly glancing at her sketches. He turned to the holographic image above her eyesight which showed the breakdown of Barnes’ arm. “Looking into Bucky?”
Y/N stopped sketching and leaned back in her seat, sighing. “I’m trying. It’s weird for him to have this steel arm, but it’s only useful of strength and breaking things.”
Tony nodded and replied, “I tried to improve it a while back, but had no luck. Eventually, I just moved onto fixing something else.”
Y/N met his eyes and offered an empathetic smile. “Perhaps I can take over that project then.”
Tony chuckled and crossed his arms over his chest. “Looks like you’ve already begun.”
She leaned forward in her seat, studying the holographic display in front of her. “There must be somewhere to start that wouldn’t cause him too much pain.”
“You know that the guy survived a war, right? I’m pretty sure he can take whatever pain you throw at him.”
Y/N nodded slightly and responded, “True, but if I can diminish it, I will.”
Tony sighed and rest a gentle hand on her shoulder. “I’m sure you’ll figure it out. I’ll leave you to it.” With one reassuring grip on her shoulder, Tony strolled out of the lab, leaving her with her thoughts.
She took a deep breath, steadying herself to return her focus to the task at hand. Another all-nighter was in the making, but she vowed to make it worthwhile.
-
The following morning, Y/N sat up in her seat sharply, manipulating the holographic structure of Bucky’s arm. She moved minuscule pieces around, gradually making room to input something of her own making. Or rather, her father’s making.
As the shifted the last piece into place, she asked Skye to run a success check. After a beat, Skye responded. “100 percent completed with successful stability.”
Y/N couldn’t even hide her relief. She grinned from ear to ear, letting the tension dissipate from her shoulders. She rose to her feet and raised her hands to the ceiling in a full-body stretch. She was elated to finally come up with a technique that could actually improve Bucky’s arm.
Just as she breathed out, she knew she had to summon Bucky to the lab to run the idea past him. But first, a shower.
-
Freshly showered and clothed, Y/N rushed through the halls of the building in search of Bucky. Sensing what she was doing, Skye offered some well-needed information.
“Bucky Barnes is outside running laps with Steve Rogers.”
As Y/N landed on the ground floor, she nodded and thanked Skye.
Pushing open the front doors of the Headquarters, she trekked across the grounds to the track and field segment. Just as Skye advised, Y/N found the two soldiers finishing up their run, both trying to hide their heavy breathing.
She took a deep breath and made her way over to them.
Steve saw her before she approached. “Hey, little Stark!” he welcomed, causing Bucky to snap his eyes to her.
“Hey,” Bucky simply said.
She offered a subtle wave and turned to face Bucky. “Are you busy?”
Bucky placed his hands on his waist, still steadying his breathing. When he glanced down, damp strands of coffee-coloured hair fell in front of his eyes. He shrugged and replied, “Depends on what you’ve got in mind.”
At his suggestive tone, Steve scoffed and playfully shoved his friend. “Dude,” was all Steve could muster.
Bucky smirked but kept his eyes on you. “What about it, Stark? Got something tempting for me?”
Y/N’s optimism turned into annoyance as she watched the smug guy in front of her.
“You’ve been locked away in that lab for so long, I almost forgot what you looked like,” he teased, taking a confident step towards her.
Refusing to back away, Y/N held his stare.
“You should be outdoors more often; sunlight looks good on you.” Ever so smoothly, Bucky raised his human arm to move a loose strand from her forehead.
Still irked, Y/N raised her hand to firmly grip the soldier’s wrist. His startled eyes met hers, and just for a moment, she saw him falter. Confidently, she thrust his arm back towards him and took a step of her own towards him. Glaring at him, she finally responded. “When you’re ready to get that arm upgraded, come find me.”
One last look at his puzzled expression and Y/N turned away, returning to the building. She dare not look back at the soldier, wanting to hold onto her pride.
As the front door shut behind her, she let out a breath. She raised a hand to cover her heart, sensing her heart rate spike.
“What the hell?” she muttered to herself as the leaned against the nearest wall.
“You should try to get more time outside, Y/N,” Skype piped up.
What she really needed now was to get her mind away from this whole Bucky situation. She sighed and said, “Do we have any requests from the Dark Web?”
Instantly, Skye replied, “Quite a few, actually.”
She nodded and leaned away from the wall, heading for the stairs to return to her room. “Let’s get to work, then.”
With that, she resolved herself to spending the remainder of the day in her room, with momentary breaks for coffee and light snacks at Skye’s insistence.

By the time Y/N looked outside her bedroom window, she was met with pitch black darkness. Just on the horizon, at the edge of the grounds, she could make out the faint lights of the light-posts. The time on the computer flashed 3:56 AM.
She sighed, unaware of how focused she was on messing around with the computer and perfecting it to her movements and preferences.
She rose to her feet and stretched, letting her hands fall limply to her sides afterwards. In the dead silence of the night, her stomach’s rumblings made itself known. Sighing, she decided to head out to the nearest kitchenette.
“Skye, you got a map of this place?” she asked openly.
“Of course. Shall we go get something to eat?” the AI responded.
The more time Y/N spent communicating verbally with her software, the more accustomed she was getting to having it by her side at all times.
Despite the verbal presence, Skye was still connected to Y/N’s nerve system, which allowed the software to show Y/N the map of the compound behind her eyelids.
As she opened the door, she noticed that the hallway was designed with dimmed lighting, demonstrating paths throughout the building. She quietly shut the door behind her and began taking cautious steps through the hallway. With the display map and the lighting, she grew confident in finding her way around the building.
Just as she rounded a corner and was facing what seemed to be a lounging area, she stilled upon hearing another pair of footsteps echoing along the corridor.
Hurriedly, she headed for the kitchenette, trying to conceal herself in the darkness.
The footsteps became louder as they drew closer to her. Just as the sound stopped, the lights above her snapped on, causing her to jump slightly.
“There are other people living here, so it really doesn’t make sense to hide from them.”
She recognized that voice instantly and rolled her eyes. As she moved to stand straight, she watched Bucky looking comfortable in his loose tee and sweatpants. His hair was tousled, but that seemed to be his normal look.
Without speaking, Bucky moved to stand beside her, prepping the coffee maker. After a moment of silence passed between them, he finally glanced at her and spoke. “Coffee?”
She met his eyes and offered a gentle nod.
“Can’t sleep?” he asked.
This time, she used her voice. “I got carried away with some stuff. I didn’t even realize it was so late.”
“Yeah, this place’ll do that to you. How long are you planning on staying?”
“I guess until I'm asked to leave.”
Bucky chuckled and reached for two coffee mugs from the shelf above. “So, you’ve decided to stay then?”
“For now.”
Bucky proceeded to pour the freshly brewed coffee into the mugs, keeping his eyes focused on the task. Y/N looked down at his still hands, and only then did she remember the steel arm.
Out of pure curiosity, she reached out and rest gentle fingers on his bionic forearm. On instinct, Bucky pulled away.
“S-sorry,” Y/N stuttered, shaken by the sudden reaction.
He returned the coffee pot to its housing and turned his full form to face her. “You know, when I first got here, Tony tried to mess around with my arm, running all kinds of experiments on it. He never explained what he was looking for or trying to accomplish, but he gave up eventually. So, as his flesh and blood, what do you think he was trying to do?”
She took a moment to consider; this was not the conversation she thought she’d be having in the wee hours of the morning. Her gaze roamed over the arm, noticing the little knacks from the years of combat. She reached out once again to touch a scratch near his elbow. Decidedly, she responded, “If it were me, I’d try to get your arm made of the same material as Steve’s shield. That way, you wouldn’t have so many chipped pieces. Heck, given the tech that Tony has, he should’ve at least made your arm like the Iron Man suit.”
At that, Bucky guffawed, letting his smile reach his eyes. “Yeah, that’s not a bad idea. Maybe now that you’re here, you can work on that for me.”
Before she could respond, Bucky grabbed his mug and left the room. She watched after him for a moment, momentarily letting her imagination run wild. Bucky was right; she was now surrounded with tech that she could presumably do anything with, and she itched to test her own limits.
She smirked to herself and wrapped her hands around the steaming coffee cup. She asked Skye to turn off the lights of the lounge as she walked out, retracing the route to her room.

As the sunset approached outside, it dawned on Y/N that she was there for longer than ever expected. And she didn’t mind, enjoyed it even. Never in her wildest dreams did she believe she could spend so many hours talking to her father about tech stuff.
Somewhere in between their tour, another coffee station appeared and they stopped to lounge. He turned to her and asked if she had any ideas on how to elevate the Iron Man concept. She offered some advice, but nothing he wasn’t already playing around with. She couldn’t deny it, the mere fact that she had the same thoughts about the Iron Man creations that he did really made her feel like she belonged. It was as though they remained in sync over the years.
During their coffee break, Bucky appeared again, this time drenched in sweat. He didn’t even acknowledge their presence; he moved to the fridge and downed a bottle of water. Y/N fought the thought of what he’d been doing all this time.
After a few heavy breaths, Bucky tossed the empty bottle into the recycling bin and approached the Starks. He flopped into a chair opposite their couch and stared playfully between them.
“What have you two been up to?” he asked, a few clumped strands dangling from the outer edge of his brow bone.
Tony sipped his coffee and placed the mug onto the side table beside him. “Just rounding up the tour. You and Cap been out there this whole time?”
Bucky nodded and turned his gaze to the younger Stark. “You like it here yet?”
The teasing smirk tugging at his mouth was not missed by Y/N. “It’s growing on me, yes.”
“Showed her her room yet?” Bucky asked, returning to Tony.
“Was just about to.” Tony rest a gentle hand on Y/N’s shoulder, causing her to look to him. “You ready, kid? The rooms are on the floor above this one.”
Y/N nodded and moved to stand.
“I’ll catch up with you guys later.” Bucky remained lounging in his chair, letting the comfort overtake him.
--
The curved staircase led them to the upper floor, which was littered with bedroom doors all around the floor. The entire landing was barren as persons were scattered throughout the grounds.
Tony strutted with confidence, already having a particular room in mind for his daughter. All Y/N could do was follow, awing at the glass ceiling that allowed natural sunlight to flow through the building.
Around the corner, Tony came to a halt. From this view, Tony stood in front of the last door in the hallway. The only way to leave was to return from where they came. Although it was the last room, she welcomed it, glad to have one less surrounding neighbour.
Tony led the way as he opened the undecorated door and entered the corner room. Y/N followed close behind, eager to discover more.
The room itself was spacious, bigger than any room she ever had. Directly opposite to the main door was the bed, already set up with lilac bed sheets. To the right of the bed was an enormous wardrobe, which led to the private bathroom. To the left of the bed was a work desk, with adjoining desktop computers already set up. The tech was the most valuable part to her; that is, until Skye’s voice rang throughout the room.
“This will do quite nicely,” she announced, with her voice bouncing off the untouched walls of the room.
While she took in the room, Tony kept his gaze on her face, eager for a positive reaction. As she stepped further into the room, automatically heading for the work desk, Tony spoke. “Every room is soundproof, so you can speak to Skye freely. It also helps to avoid the restlessness of Barnes’ nightmares.”
Y/N turned to him on hearing that admission. “Nightmares?”
Tony merely nodded and explained, “That soldier’s been through a lot. He’s overcome the whole brainwashing thing but he can’t escape the memories of what he’s seen and done.”
Y/N nodded, trying to take in that information. She, like most others in the world, knew of the basic background of the various Avengers members. The media painted them to be so superior and progressive that she often forgot that they had their own demons to face.
After a wordless moment passed between the two of them, Tony cleared his throat and said, “I’ll send up someone to help you pick out some furniture and curtains.”
After Y/N nodded, she watched her father leave her, closing the door behind him.
She moved to sit by the work desk and power on the computers, eager to play around with the tech, and manipulate it to resemble her own computer back at her apartment.
“I can help with setting it up how you like, Y/N,” Skye said, surprising you again. Hearing her voice was something you had to get accustomed to.
As Y/N took a deep breath, she watched as Skye effortlessly made adjustments to the set-up. Just sitting there, she muttered, “Can I actually move in here?”
Skye was eager to entertain the topic. “You would have to leave the apartment and move here. That could be time-consuming, but I'm sure Happy would help. Plus, this area is unknown to other people, so it’s much more private that an apartment in the city. And, of course, there’s that huge lab you can work in.”
Y/N knew of all those perks, but she couldn’t ignore one major factor. “What about Tony?”
The response came immediately. “He obviously wants you here with him. Would it be so bad to try, at least?”
She couldn’t respond right away; she honestly had no idea. She definitely enjoyed spending time with him, learning and being creative with him in the lab, but was she prepared for something more? Was she ready to let herself be his daughter, after so long? She couldn’t fathom calling him ‘Dad’ at the present time, but maybe someday, if she dived right in and ignored her fears.
“What do you have to lose?” Skye pushed.
Y/N’s eyes snapped to the computer screens in front of her, her mind still a mile away. “Not a damn thing,” she muttered, more to herself than the AI.

Y/N grasped the marble-finished countertop, desperate for balance as her vision became shaky. As she held onto the edge, she noticed movement from the corner of her eye.
Her knees weakened and she began crouching towards the ground. Her grip gave way to rest on the floor. With her back against the supports of the table, she struggled to get her breathing to normalize. In front of her, her father appeared, worry plastered across his face. He began feeling her head for a fever before proceeding to test her pulse in her neck.
While she stared at him, unable to speak, her system displayed the surveillance pictures, one after the other, proving to her that she couldn’t trust anyone here.
Then, there was one image that appeared that stilled her breathing. It showed her, from her graduation from Cornell University. In the image, she was grinning, dressed in the classic graduation gown and cap. She stood opposite one of her teachers, grasping her certificate in her hands. She wondered if he was actually there, or if she really stood that perfectly in plain view of the school’s cameras.
That picture arose something in her that she fought back since the previous evening: rage. Her pulse maintained its elevated rate, but her senses returned. She was once more in full control of her movements.
She moved her legs below, ready to rise. Tony rested a gentle, but firm hand on her shoulder, advising her against trying to stand. With one swift motion, she removed his grip, not wanting him anywhere near her.
“You okay, Y/N?” Bucky asked, concern showing plainly. “That looked rough.”
Finding her voice, she replied, “I’m fine, thank you.” She felt sturdy on her feet, but she couldn’t meet Tony’s worried gaze.
“Maybe you should have some water,” Steve offered, motioning to the sink opposite the coffee station.
She shook her head. “No, I'm fine, really.”
“Does that happen often?” Tony asked, taking a cautious step towards her.
On instinct, she stepped away. The movement was not missed by anyone; they knew she was uncomfortable.
“Perhaps we should end the tour there for today,” Tony said, glancing at the others.
“I’d like to leave,” Y/N muttered, glancing at the stairs behind her father.
Tony nodded and said, “I’ll let Happy know.” Just as Tony turned to leave, he stopped suddenly. With a heavy, frustrated sigh, he rounded and stomped over to her. Looking her directly in her eyes, where not even she could look away, his concerned turned into annoyance. “You know, I didn’t think it was going to be this challenging to get you to at least talk to me. If being in the same room with me is so difficult, then you can return to hiding away in your apartment, taking up whatever pity jobs you can find.”
She glared right back at him. Ignoring his insult, she questioned, “Were you there, at Cornell?”
Tony immediately knew to what she was referring; her graduation ceremony. He admitted, “No, but I sent Happy. He was more than willing to go.”
She scoffed, believing the validity of the statement. “Of course, he was; he was willing to be much more of a parental figure than you were ever capable of being.”
The words stung Tony, but he couldn’t counter it; an absent father was all they had to show for their family history. “That’s why I want to make things better, get to know who you’ve become.”
After a beat of silence, Y/N responded. “It’s never going to be the same, you know. I’m not some kid you can move around as you see fit.”
He nodded, knowing exactly what she meant. “You’re your own person, I know. You even made your own Jarvis, which I have yet to figure out how you did that.”
She smirked and replied, “I’ve already broken into Jarvis, again.” As though confirming her truth, Jarvis’ voice sounded through the speakers above. “That’s right, Sir. They’re holding me hostage again.”
“Do you still want to leave, or do you want to see the lab first?”
“It’s a really neat lab,” Steve offered.
Both Starks turned to Steve, almost forgetting that the two soldiers were still around.
“Let’s see how impressive it is, then,” Y/N decided.
Tony nodded and turned, leading the way out of the lounge area.
-
The lab was better than anything she could’ve imagined. There was tech stuff everywhere she looked and she was ready to explore. The more she saw, the more she felt drawn to the room. She felt like she could spend night after night there, letting herself just….create. Even the software on her arm reacted, itching to play.
Tony stood back, watching his daughter stare in awe at the lab he created. From what Happy told him, Y/N seemed to appreciate technology just as much as Tony. Watching her internally fangirl over the room was more than enough to convince him that he made the right choice in bringing her here.
Steve and Bucky excused themselves, retreating to their own rooms.
As though forgetting that her father was still there, Y/N moved to the far end of the room, heading directly for a back-wall of holographic systems that were calling for her. The moment her hand rose to touch the design, it reacted, showing a screen pop-up of security cameras throughout the room.
With swipes of her fingertips, different camera screens could be re-arranged and manipulated. She smiled like a child experiencing cotton candy for the first time. She always knew that tech like this existed, but she preferred to stick with the old-school physical computers for her work.
“Sir, Y/N’s system is requesting access to the mainframe. Shall I oblige?” Jarvis’ voice rang throughout the room, causing Y/N to jump in shock.
She met her father’s eyes, as he asked her, “Requesting access now? Why not just break in like you did before?”
She shrugged slightly and replied, “Perhaps it’s tired of sneaking around.”
Tony scoffed and averted his eyes. “Let it in, Jarvis. We have nothing to hide.”
Static reverberated across the holographic screens until it settled to shine brighter than it was before. Y/N stared at the screens, wondering how she should treat her system now.
Just as she was attempting to control it, words appeared on the screen. Hello, Y/N. What would you like me to find out?
Her eyes widened, and the first thing she thought of, she replied out loud, “How do I give you a voice, like Jarvis? It would be easier to just talk to you rather than relay everything to you telepathically.”
After a beat, the words appeared on the screen. I’ll see what I can do.
Tony moved to stand right next to his daughter, as he sounded, “Using my tech to configure your own creation?”
“Isn’t that what outsourcing is about?” she replied, glancing at her father with a smirk.
As she waited for her software to notify her of the progress, she let herself escape in her thoughts. Standing next to her father, after more than a decade, bonding over software development, felt...real.
Of course, she knew it was real, but it felt like achieving something she only previously imagine. He was here and he seemed to actually want her in his life. Her heart said that she should remain guarded, but bit by bit, she yearned to be wanted. She was grown up, able to support herself, but the only missing ingredient was a family.
Did she really want to jump right back into the madness of being a Stark, especially now that his family extended into including the Avengers?
Before her mind could decide, her software popped back up on the screen. Male of female voice, Y/N?
She opted for female.
Right away, it reflected.
“How is it doing that?” Tony voiced.
Jarvis was quick to respond. “It’s taking my coding for speech and interpretation. The lines are being manipulated to suit Miss Stark and her past communication patterns.”
Below his breath, Tony muttered, “Impressive.”
After another couple of minutes, a female voice rang out, startling everyone. “Hello, Y/N. I can now officially speak to you.”
“H-how?” Y/N asked, truly at a loss for this possibility.
“’I’ve implanted my coding into the mainframe of Stark Technologies. Whenever you are here, we can speak like this.”
“What about everywhere else?”
“I trust you don’t want to seem unstable to others, so we will return to mental communication.”
Y/N nodded, adjusting quickly.
“As my creator, shouldn’t I have a name, by now?”
This time, Tony turned to her. “You haven’t named it yet?”
She shrugged in defense. “I didn’t have a good enough name for it.”
Tony scoffed and said, “Well, now’s as good a time as any.”
“What do you think you should be called?” Y/N asked, facing the screen.
After a moment of silence, the software voiced, “What about Skye?”
She thought it over, and questioned, “Why that name?”.
The response came immediately. “That’s what you called your imaginary friend when you were 6.”
Y/N balked at the statement, feeling the momentary sense of embarrassment. Tony sniffed silently, and said, “I remember that. You begged me to make a watch for your friend one Christmas. It was cute.”
It suddenly became obvious to her why she fashioned her greatest creation after a wrist accessory. All she ever wanted was to have a someone with her so she wouldn’t have to feel lonely and abandoned.
She took a deep breath and announced, “Skye it is, then.”
