Blog 26. Mindfulness
Tumblr media
As OT's we also have to care for the mental wellbeing of our clients. There are many interventions and methods that focus on mental health. One of those interventions is Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. This state is described as observing one’s thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad.    In simpler words it is being in the present, being conscious and acknowledging your feelings.  In my internship I also used a lot of different mindfulness exercises on my clients.  I used meditation exercises, breathing exercises, practicing setting boundaries, acknowledge negative thoughts and convert them to good ones.   Other mindfulness practices/hobbies are Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, gardening, being in nature, exercising (walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing etc.), making art, reading, writing, cooking/baking, decorating.
Mindfulness can help for the following symptoms:
Reduction of anxiety
Better night's sleep
Increased ability to relax
Reduction of stress symptoms
The ability to deal more effectively with long- and short-term stress
More energy and enthusiasm for life
Improving self-esteem
Reduction of depression
Learn to deal with pain
Reduction of physical and psychological symptoms
This year I experienced some mental health problems myself and I discovered that Mindfulness also could help me as a student and professional. I personally really like dancing, making art, decorating and breathing exercises. Recently I have also been interested in Yoga. Mindfulness has helped me to relax more and feel happier.
I have a few mindfulness exercises for you to do yourself.
Breathing exercise  Breath slowly in until the air fills your lower stomach and breath slowly out.  Repeat this about 5 times and see what it does with your body and how you feel.
Body scan  How does your body feel in the here and now.  Focus from head to toe on your body parts and you're breathing.  When you have a complete picture of the state your body is in, you can map out the problems for yourself. Ask yourself where these could be coming from and how you could fix them. Do this for about 10 minutes.
Guided Meditations on Youtube  You can find a lot of mindfulness meditations and exercises on YouTube and other sites.  For example, this one: A Ten Minute Guided Meditation to Clear Your Mind - YouTube
I hope you found my article interesting, and I hope you will try mindfulness exercises yourself to see what it does for you as a person and professional.
Until the next blog,
Sarah

Ergotherapie in Turkije🇹🇷

Angelo Viviani - “The Horizon”
Tumblr media
Esce “The Horizon”, singolo del musicista e compositore Angelo Viviani. “The Horizon” è sui principali stores digitali e in promozione nazionale.

Sitting in Traffic for Just Two Hours Can Damage Your Brain, Study Finds
In a first-ever controlled experiment to show evidence of altered brain network connectivity in humans after exposure to air pollution, signs of decreased brain function can appear in as little as two hours after exposure to traffic pollution.
A study released by a team at the University of British Columbia reveals that exposure to diesel exhaust fumes can have disastrous effects on your brain. This may be worse if you find yourself sitting in traffic during your daily commute to, or from the office.
In order to arrive at this conclusion the study focused on the brain’s functional connectivity: a measure that tests how well different parts of the brain are able to communicate or interact with one another. The team briefly exposed 25 healthy adults to either diesel exhaust or filtered air in the lab and used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the participant’s brains before and after each exposure.
The study looked at the participants' brain default mode network (DMN), which is where internal thoughts and memories are stored. They found that after the brain is exposed to diesel exhaust, the DMN has less activity than those in the study who were exposed to filtered air.
“We know that altered functional connectivity in the DMN has been associated with reduced cognitive performance and symptoms of depression, so it’s concerning to see traffic pollution interrupting these same networks,” explains Jodie Gawryluk, the study’s first author and a psychology professor at the University of Victoria.
“While more research is needed to fully understand the functional impacts of these changes, it’s possible that they may impair people’s thinking or ability to work.”
Fortunately, the participant’s brain function returned to normal after their short-term exposure, however the researchers speculate that long-term exposure (such as sitting in traffic for hours at a time) could lead to permanent brain damage.
“People may want to think twice the next time they’re stuck in traffic with the windows rolled down,” says Carlsten. “It’s important to ensure that your car’s air filter is in good working order, and if you’re walking or biking down a busy street, consider diverting to a less busy route.”
In 2008, a separate study done by Dutch researchers at Zuyd University also found that exposure to diesel exhaust triggers the stress response part of the brain. Those researchers also speculated that long-term exposure to diesel could have lasting, negative effects on brain health.

A newspaper mention!
Some weeks ago COMMEET (with a mention of our team!) was featured in a local newspaper! As ‘international top students from Maastricht University’ we are very proud of this feature and of COMMEET’s mission, so we wanted to share it with you all. Since it is in Dutch, our Dutch team member translated the piece to get more of an insight into what COMMEET is about.
Tumblr media
COMMEET, worldwide help from South-Limburg
From arranging jobs for migrants in Geleen to building roads in Bangladesh: with their non-profit organisation Jos Hermans (73) and Maarten Schrevel (67) from Maastricht support people worldwide. Below the meter’s high baobab tree, the South-Africa chieftain repeated: ‘Come and meet!’. Curiously villagers come to him.
When they hear this cry, they know: something is up. When everyone is gathered, they discuss what's going on and come up with a solution with the whole community.
Four years ago, the non-profit organization COMMEET was founded on this philosophy, says founder Jos Hermans. “A similar tree in my garden gave me an idea: like the South African community, we believe that local communities know best what is good for them. Together with people from villages, neighbourhoods and regions from all over the world, we look at what they need in areas such as education, infrastructure and work”.
COMMEET works both in Limburg and far beyond. They connect local communities with the right people, says secretary Maarten Schrevel. “For example, the Sittard-Geleen region is now faced with the quest of how they can better integrate migrants into society. That is why COMMEET puts refugees from this area in contact with staff from Zuyderland, where the migrants receive training and then get a job in the hospital”.
Local internship
Furthermore, the organization is currently aware of young people leaving South Limburg, Hermans adds. “There is a lot of concern about this, people want to keep them here. Together with Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, we are looking into whether students can get extra credits if they opt for a local internship. International top students from Maastricht University are also conducting research into our social impact.”
To connect the right people, COMMEET works with a global network, says Hermans. “This includes about 40 volunteers from all over the world. They support local communities with the help of coaching and toolkits, among other things”.
With Maastricht and Geleen as its epicentre, the organization works on sustainable development goals of the United Nations, such as quality education and economic growth. Because of these global ambitions, COMMEET works not only in South Limburg, but thanks to sponsor help in dozens of countries. For example, two Dutch professionals travelled to Bangladesh on behalf of the organization, says Schrevel. “In a village there, the only road to the plaice was always flooded in the rainy season. The road was raised and paved on the advice of the professionals”.
Tumblr media

Westerners
Such learning processes should always be central, Hermans emphasizes. “Westerners too often go to a developing country to tell them how things should be done. Don't talk about locals, but talk to them. Only then will you discover what they need and will it have a long-lasting impact because the motivation comes from within”.
Hope you liked to discover a bit more about COMMEET! We are really proud to see the this mention highlighting the organisation's mission, and we are working hard to help them to achieve a long-lasting positive impact in communities around the globe!

Introducing “The Ethics Team”
Anastasia was born and raised in a small city in Greece but since 2015 she is living and working in Maastricht. Currently she is an LL.M candidate in Maastricht university following the Globalisation and Law programme. Travelling is one of her passions and she tries to visit at least one different country per year. When in Maastricht, she enjoys reading crime books and cooking mostly Mediterranean dishes for family and friends. Her interest in the project derives from her own personal experience as a student in Maastricht University and she seeks -through this project- to help the University to incorporate the teaching of research principles into its academic curriculum.
Jeffrey was born in Maastricht, the Netherlands and has lived there ever since. Coming from a small village, he became very interested in the international world and foreign languages. Hence, he chose International Business at Zuyd University of Applied Science. After finishing his Bachelor, there was an unsatisfied feeling thus he chose to pursue a Master’s degree. Jeffrey is currently aims to follow and complete the Master International Business with a double track Strategy & Innovation and Business Intelligence. In his free time, he loves to read books and is usually on the go mainly doing sports. Ultimately, research equals learning yet there needs to be a practical element to it. That is why the Premium project well suited his profile given there needs to be a practical implementation for the end result.
Leon was born in Germany and grew up on a little island in Malaysia. After a decade in South-east Asia, Leon now follows a Masters in Healthcare Policies, Innovation, and Management. He spends his free time as a competitive cheerleader and traveling. To Leon, the PREMIUM Project inspires his aspirations in preserving integrity of scientific evidence.
Lisa was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. Firstly, she studied Online-Media-Management in Stuttgart and she is currently getting her Masters in “Media Studies – Digital Cultures” at Fasos. In her free time, she likes to travel, golf and most of all hang out with her friends. The Premium project “Research Ethics and Integrity” interested her, because she felt like those issues were not addressed during her Bachelors at all and since studying in Maastricht she gained some insights into the obstacles regarding ethical research and the importance thereof.
Pascal was born in Vienna to a Swiss father and Brazilian mother. His father was formerly a diplomat, consequently, much of his life has been spent traveling from one country to another. He obtained his bachelor in Commerce in University College Dublin and now studies Human Decision Science at Maastricht University. He believes in keeping a balance between a healthy mind and body, which reflects itself in his lifestyle. He enjoys doing sports - mainly running and gymnastics - and reading. His interest in the project stems from readings he did during his gap year, which during his studies discovered were no longer considered valid sometimes due to sloppy science.
San was born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam, to Italian and Vietnamese parents, and attended a French school there. Leaving Hanoi for university, he has since then lived in Rotterdam, Brussels, and Maastricht. His interests are wide, which is reflected in his studies - first in Business Administration and Philosophy, and now in Public Policy. He is an avid reader and music enthusiast and enjoys the simple things in life - food, the company of friends, the sea. This project is especially interesting to him because of its multidisciplinary focus and because of its translation of abstract ideas to practical implementations.

Tumblr media

Blog 22 MediReva day
Hello everyone,
Today I (Sarah) like to tell you about a Healthcare Technology Day organised by MediReva.  MediReva is a medical specialty store, which supplies medical devices and care materials for diabetes, wounds, stoma, incontinence, nutrition and rehabilitation care.  MediReva was founded in 1979 by the couple Pierre and Tineke Gubbels, with the ambition to make the lives of (chronically) ill people more pleasant.  They where a small company in the south of the Netherlands and now they are a well known company.    The MediReva day is a day for the different health care professionals that use the services of MediReva and the advicers. On the day their where different guest speakers that provided new information about important subjects. Than there were also different companies that presented there (new) health care technologies.  You could test out the different products and ask questions.
Van Raam is a company that makes unique adapted bicycles for people with disabilities.  The different bicycles are tricycles, mobility scooter bicycles, wheelchair bicycles, tandems, side-by-side tandems, wheelchair transport bicycles and low entry bicycles or comfort bicycles.
Invacare is a company that makes different wheelchairs with or without elektric auxiliary driving.  You could test out all these wheelchairs and get information about the different options.
There was also a companies that had different Anti-decubitus cushions that help to prevent sores.  One cushion is called the ROHO and it has different cells that get filled with air by a hand pump.  Another is called Vicair and is filled with tiny triangles filled with air.
It was fun and interesting to test all the products and learn more about how they work.  With the information I got I can help my future clients.
I hope you found my story of the Medireva day interesting.
Till next time!

AEIMS Congress March 2017 March 17-18
Tumblr media
In March, our school (Hogeschool Zuyd) was honored with the chance to host the annual Association Européenne des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques (AEIMS) Congress for the lovely medical and scientific illustrators here in Europe.  We had a wonderful turnout of students, alumni, teachers and professionals, as well as combinations thereof. It was a lot of work, and put a lot of stress on our program, during an already tumultuous time where we were fighting to keep our degree name from being changed by the school. However, through the efforts of Rogier, Dirk, Karen and Sarah, and the rest of our students and faculty, we pulled off something pretty spectacular.
Tumblr media
Part of the congress included free tickets to attend the fancy European Fine Arts Fair, otherwise known as TEFAF. We dressed ourselves up and took a bus over to the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition &  Congress Center) and spent the afternoon browsing works from all over the world -- renaissance, ancient, modern, post-modern, scientific/medical, medieval, neoclassical and more!  The magic of this fair is that nearly all of these pieces are for sale.   I almost bought a sketch by Klimt as it was only 16 euros, but it was really only an unfinished study of a few lines for a piece never created and I thought, I probably didn’t need it.  Alas, maybe one day I’ll start a true art collection. After the exhibition, most of us attended a very fancy and delicious meal at
Tumblr media
During the two very full days of the congress, we also had many speakers enlighten us. Bill Andrews of Georgia Regent University spoke about the history of medical illustration, Esmee Winkel (a successful alum) explained what it was like to work with botanists as a botanical illustrator at the Naturalis in Leiden, and Lorraine Daston spoke to us about objectivity and its relevance in our line of work.  We had more alumni speak to us about the continuation of the work they did for their theses, what it’s like to work as a team at a medical illustration office, and what it’s like to look for work as a freelance illustrator immediately after graduation.  A few other schools with scientific illustration related programs described what their education is like and how it can be used to further the field of science and medicine. Finally, before our exhibition, we heard from a few professionals-- from Anne Schulp the paleontologist to Pancras Dijk from National Geographic, data visualization expert Frédérik Ruys and the bird man himself, Erik van Ommen.
Tumblr media
Following the speakers, we had an an open exhibition of the work from the congress participants.  It doubled as a silent auction where we could raise money for the congress as well as get the chance to own artworks from our colleagues. Additionally, awards were given to the best from the students and professionals!  Altogether, a very successful congress where we could all network and appreciate our fellow artists :)
