Blog 26. Mindfulness 

As OT's we also have to care for the mental wellbeing of our clients. There are many interventions and methods that focus on mental health. One of those interventions is Mindfulness. 

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. This state is described as observing one’s thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad.    In simpler words it is being in the present, being conscious and acknowledging your feelings.  In my internship I also used a lot of different mindfulness exercises on my clients.  I used meditation exercises, breathing exercises, practicing setting boundaries, acknowledge negative thoughts and convert them to good ones.   Other mindfulness practices/hobbies are Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, gardening, being in nature, exercising (walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing etc.), making art, reading, writing, cooking/baking, decorating.    

Mindfulness can help for the following symptoms: 

Reduction of anxiety 

Better night's sleep 

Increased ability to relax 

Reduction of stress symptoms 

The ability to deal more effectively with long- and short-term stress 

More energy and enthusiasm for life 

Improving self-esteem 

Reduction of depression 

Learn to deal with pain 

Reduction of physical and psychological symptoms 

This year I experienced some mental health problems myself and I discovered that Mindfulness also could help me as a student and professional. I personally really like dancing, making art, decorating and breathing exercises. Recently I have also been interested in Yoga. Mindfulness has helped me to relax more and feel happier. 

I have a few mindfulness exercises for you to do yourself. 

Breathing exercise  Breath slowly in until the air fills your lower stomach and breath slowly out.  Repeat this about 5 times and see what it does with your body and how you feel.   

Body scan  How does your body feel in the here and now.  Focus from head to toe on your body parts and you're breathing.  When you have a complete picture of the state your body is in, you can map out the problems for yourself. Ask yourself where these could be coming from and how you could fix them. Do this for about 10 minutes.   

Guided Meditations on Youtube  You can find a lot of mindfulness meditations and exercises on YouTube and other sites.  For example, this one: A Ten Minute Guided Meditation to Clear Your Mind - YouTube

Ergotherapie in Denemarken!

Hej, hvordan går det?

Weten jullie welke taal dat is? Het is Deens en betekend ‘Hallo, hoe gaat het?’ Hopelijk gaat het jullie goed, omdat er weer een heel spannend blog om te lezen is 😊.  

De opleiding ergotherapie duurt in Denemarken 3,5 jaar. Het is een voltijdse opleiding. Na afronding van de opleiding krijgen de studenten de titel Bachelor of Science. Om de opleiding ergotherapie te kunnen volgen moet eerst een toelatingsexamen gedaan worden. Starten met de opleiding mag je dan alleen als het gemiddelde cijfer van het toelatingsexamen voldoende is, je een diploma hoger secundair onderwijs (dus havo of vwo) hebt en in Engels het taalniveau B1 kunt aanwijzen. Je kunt op twee verschillende datums beginnen met de opleiding, er is altijd een start in de zomer en in de winter.  

Tijdens de studie leren studenten de ergotherapeutische werkprocessen en behandelmethoden kennen. Theoretische kennis wordt opgedaan op het gebied van pathologie, geneeskunde, natuurwetenschappen, anatomie, fysiologie, geesteswetenschappen, pedagogie, psychologie, ethiek sociologie, en gezondheidsbeleid en wetgeving. Gedurende de hele opleiding en 14 modules oefenen de studenten nieuwe vaardigheden in een oefenappartement. Dit is er vergelijkbaar met de opleiding in Nederland. Toch de stages zijn in Denemarken heel anders.  

In bijna elk semester hebben de studenten een stage. In semester 1 hebben ze een snuffelstage van één dag. In semester 2 lopen de studenten vier weken stage. Hierbij mogen ze eerste gesprekken voeren en observaties en onderzoeken uitvoeren. In semester 4 wordt acht weken stagegelopen. Het doel van de stage is om zelfstandig met ondersteuning van de stagebegeleider verschillende patiënt te behandelen. Aan het einde van deze stage vindt een bedrijfsinterne praktische toets plaats. In Semester 5 vindt een drie-weken stage plaats in een opleidingscentra, gezondheidscentra of ziekenhuizen, waar de studenten werken aan een klein project op het gebied van gezondheid en veiligheid op de werkplaats. Tijdens deze periode wordt kennis opgedaan van de organisatie en de interprofessionele samenwerking. Daarnaast krijgen de studenten verdieping in hoe de arbeidstherapeutische interventie deel uitmaakt van de gezondheid en veiligheid op het werkplaats en het behoud van werk. De laatste stage in de 6e semester bestaat uit twee periodes. Aan het begin van het semester hebben de studenten een stage van drie weken, hierbij richten ze zich op innovatie, documentatie, management en kwaliteitsontwikkeling. Hiermee leren ze hoe ze een praktijk verder kunnen ontwikkelen. Aan het einde van het semester vindt nog een tien weken stage plaats. Dit is ook de laatste stage voor de studenten. Tijdens deze laatste stage richten de studenten zich op complexe ergotherapeutische problemen met een focus op de ergotherapeutische beroepscompetenties.  

Daarnaast mogen studenten in het 3e, 5e en 7e semester tussen keuzevakken en interdisciplinaire cursussen kiezen en daarmee hun studie een eigen richting geven. Aan het einde van de studie hebben de studenten een scriptie.  

Na het afronden van de opleiding kunnen de studenten vele kanten op gaan. Zoals in Nederland zijn ook in Denemarken veel verschillende settingen waarin ergotherapeuten kunnen werken: gezondheidscentra, arbeidsbureaus, gespecialiseerde instellingen, ziekenhuizen, verpleeghuizen, psychiatrie, particuliere bedrijven en onderwijsinstellingen. Het is ook mogelijk te werken als consultant op het gebied van gezondheid en veiligheid op het werk of te werken binnen de technologie en helpen bij het ontwerpen van ondersteunende technologie in de particuliere sector. Een eigen praktijk op te zetten en werken als manager is ook mogelijk. Gemiddelde maandloon ligt bij afgestudeerden bij ongeveer DKK 33’294 (dat zijn 4467 euro per maand).

Ook is het mogelijk een masteropleiding te volgen na afronding van de studie. Daarnaast is er de mogelijkheid om kortere cursussen te volgen op veel verschillende niveaus en met verschillende academische accenten.

Heerlen, Maastricht en Sittard-Geleen gaan de diensten die zich richten op de Euregionale en internationale arbeidsmarkt van Zuid-Limburg langjarig continueren. Het gaat om de Grensinfopunten Aken Eurode en Maastricht, de Services Grensarbeid Kerkrade en Maastricht, het Expat Centre Maastricht Region en het Rijksprogramma Talent Coalition. Dat hebben de colleges van de drie gemeenten besloten. Op 22 februari organiseren zij hierover een conferentie. Dienstverlening onmisbaar voor Zuid-Limburgse economie De afspraken tussen de gemeenten zijn vastgelegd in een samenwerkingsovereenkomst. In de periode 2024-2027 investeren zij samen ruim € 1.2 mln. per jaar in deze diensten. Met deze investering is de continuïteit van deze diensten verzekerd en kan worden ingespeeld op de toenemende vraag van (internationale) inwoners, werknemers en werkgevers. "Grens- en kenniswerkers zijn een onmisbare schakel in onze Zuid-Limburgse economie. Dat vraagt bijpassende dienstverlening. Om de arbeidsmarkt vitaal te houden, moeten we bovendien talenten op alle niveaus blijven aantrekken en binden aan onze regio. Dat vereist een stevige en langjarige regionale samenwerking. Met deze overeenkomst ligt die er nu," aldus Martin de Beer, wethouder economie en arbeidsmarkt van Heerlen. Samen sterk Werkgevers, campussen, kennisinstellingen en intermediaire organisaties onderschrijven het belang van deze stap en gaan de komende jaren meedenken om de dienstverlening verder te optimaliseren. Het gaat bij de start van de samenwerking om Brightlands, Medlands Parkstad, LWV, Lonza, Maastricht University, Hogeschool Zuyd, LIOF, Vista en MKB Limburg. "Deze dienstverlening is niet alleen nodig voor de ontwikkeling van de Brightlands campussen, maar ook voor het innovatieve MKB, dat eveneens een belangrijke motor vormt voor de economie van Zuid-Limburg. Daarom gaan we het MKB beter aansluiten bij deze diensten ", aldus Yvonne Salvino, wethouder Economie van Sittard-Geleen. Behouden van talent Het hebben van voldoende en goed opgeleide werknemers op alle niveaus is een cruciale vestigingsfactor. De grensregio Zuid-Limburg kan hierin niet zelf voorzien. Daarom wordt het aantrekken en behouden van Euregionale en internationale werknemers en studenten steeds belangrijker. Deze diensten kunnen hierbij helpen. Zij verlagen de drempel om in Zuid-Limburg te komen of te blijven werken (en soms wonen) met snelle procedures, deskundige voorlichting en goede informatie. "Met de structurele samenwerking tussen de gemeenten kunnen werkgevers, kennisinstellingen en campussen van Zuid-Limburg veel beter worden ondersteund met het invullen van hun vacatures. Dat betekent een stimulans voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de Zuid-Limburgse economie", aldus Hubert Mackus, wethouder economie van Maastricht. Conferentie Op 22 februari 2024 organiseren de drie gemeenten een conferentie in het werkcentrum Zuid-Limburg in Geleen (12.00 – 15.30 uur) over de Euregionale en internationale arbeidsmarkt. Doel is daar de krachten verder te bundelen samen met het bedrijfsleven, kennisinstellingen, campussen en intermediaire organisaties. Zuid-Limburg: euregionale en internationale arbeidsmarkt De arbeidsmarkt in Zuid-Limburg stoelt steeds steviger op de euregio en internationals. In deze infographic komt het belang duidelijk naar voren. Het toont de aantallen grenswerkers en kenniswerkers en laat van enkele bedrijven zien wat het aandeel van deze werknemers is in hun personeelsbestand. De grens infopunten helpen jaarlijks ongeveer 12.000 (potentiële) grenswerkers, bijna een verdubbeling ten opzichte van 2019.  De services Grensarbeid bemiddelen elk jaar ongeveer 250 mensen over de grens naar werk. Het Expat Centre Maastricht Region heeft jaarlijks 2300 klantcontacten en werkt samen met het IND voor ruim 100 internationale werkgevers.

Blog 28. European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE)

Hi everyone!

For today I prepared a blog about the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE), as a part of the series about OT organisations.

In 1995 the ENOTHE was founded. It is a non-profit organisation that is concerned with the standers and quality of professional education of occupational therapists across Europe.

One of their general aims is to ensure that there is a robust educational system for European OT’s, which demonstrates comparability, high quality, and flexibility to respond to changes in health and societal issues policy and practice.

The other general aim is to work with the Council of Occupational Therapist for the European Countries (COTEC). Both organisations share the key ambitions to develop strong partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally to increase presence, visibility, and influence in relation to the promotion of the OT contribution.

The ENOTHE is also committed to harmonising and improving standards of professional education, practice and research as well as advancing that body of knowledge of OT and occupational science throughout Europe.

Besides that, they seek to ensure that the professional education produces graduates who are fit for the future and able to work within an evolving political context.

Objectives that the ENOTHE has are:

Stimulate European standards of OT education in higher education using World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT) standards and methods of quality assurance in order to reach mutual recognition

Introduce and promote ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) in OT education

Encourage the development of lifelong education in OT including the development of joint education/European programmes

Provide assistance to institutions who wished to start OT education programmes and to advise on potential resources

Did you already hear of SPOTeurope (Student Platform Occupational Therapy Europe)? They are part of the ENOTHE. This platform is created to encourage and increase the connection between OT students across Europe. Like our MiniSpotZuyd, is SPOTeurope run by students for students!

And did you know that there is a yearly Annual Meeting held by ENOTHE? The Annual Meeting is a three-day Meeting for Professional, Academic and Student OT’s from all over Europe can meet and network. Each Meeting is hosted by a different institute/school/university and different key themes are discussed by different keynote speakers from across Europe.

For example, this year the Annual Meeting took place in Oviedo, Spain and next year it will take place in Kraków, Poland. This will be the first OT Europe Congress organised between 15-19 October ‘24. The conference theme will be “Future-Proofing OT”, with topics about new trends/emerging areas, mental health, physical health, education, multidisciplinary interventions and approaches, occupation focussed research and research methods, public health, student research and quality improvement.

Goedemiddag allemaal!

Vandaag is de eerste keer dat wij iets posten voor onze blog, we kijken er erg naar uit om voor jullie te posten! Wij heten jullie allereerst welkom bij onze blog en vinden het leuk dat jullie een kijkje nemen op onze blog. Wij willen jullie gaan vertellen waarom wij dit blog hebben opgestart en wat wij willen bijdrage met deze blog. We gaan vandaag hier dieper op in en ons idee toelichten.

We zullen on eerst even kort voorstellen. Wij zijn Shawna en Jule (21 jaar oud) en studeren beiden op dit moment aan de opleiding ergotherapie op Zuyd Hogeschool in Heerlen. Daarnaast zijn we gemotiveerde leden van het SPOT-team van onze opleiding. SPOT is een groep ergotherapiestudenten die zich bezighouden met internationalisering binnen de ergotherapie. De internationalisering begint al bij ons twee, Jule komt namelijk uit Duitsland en Shawna uit Nederland.

Wij willen op deze manier meer aandacht besteden aan ergotherapie in verschillende landen. Weten jullie namelijk iets over ergotherapie in Zuid-Afrika? De kans is klein, maar dit zijn wel interessante onderwerpen waar wij over willen vertellen in onze posts. Elke maand staat er een nieuw land centraal waar wij over posten. Op deze manier worden de verschillen van de landen in kaart gebracht. Zijn er in andere landen misschien methodes die wij in Nederland niet kennen of hoe ziet de opleiding er in een ander land uit? Lijkt het jullie leuk om hier meer over te lezen, dan bekijk vooral elke maand ons blog om meer te leren over ergotherapie op internationaalgebied.

Jullie mogen ons altijd benaderen over jullie ervaringen binnen ergotherapie in het binnen- en buitenland. Dit was ons eerste blog. Wij hopen jullie graag volgende maand terug te zien bij onze volgende vlog!

Op een rare manier raakte alle twee deze artikelen mij. Het probleem is dat iedere generatie een antwoord lijkt te hebben op de problemen die zich voordoen in de wereld. De frustratie bij mijn generatie ligt voornamelijk bij het feit dat mensen die de macht hebben om onze problemen op te lossen er het minst om lijken te geven. Heel veel jongeren voelen zich in die situatie machteloos. Ik denk dat dit probleem heel relevant is en zeker iets is waar ik aan terug ga denken in de toekomst.

“The older generations grew up with a certain mind-set, and we have a different perspective,” Ms. O’Connor said. “A lot of them don’t believe in climate change or don’t believe people can get jobs with dyed hair, and a lot of them are stubborn in that view. Teenagers just respond, ‘Ok, boomer.’ It’s like, we’ll prove you wrong, we’re still going to be successful because the world is changing.”

“Gen Z is going to be the first generation to have a lower quality of life than the generation before them,” said Joshua Citarella, 32, a researcher who studies online communities. Teenagers today find themselves, he said, with “three major crises all coming to a head at the Gen Z moment.”

“We’re not taking a jab at boomers as a whole — we’re not going for their lives,” said Christopher Mezher, 18. “If it’s a jab at anyone it’s outdated political figures who try to run our lives.”

“You can keep talking,” Ms. Kasman said, as if to a boomer, “but we’re going to change the future.”

Een paar quotes uit het stuk uit de New York Times die ik heel krachtig vind. Ik vind de beweging die een generatie te weeg kan brengen heel mooi om te zien. De kracht die we hebben als we samen één geheel volgen. Ik denk dat er in deze informatie maatschappij iedere dag meerdere obstakels zijn die we moeten zien te overkomen, net als in iedere generatie. Echter, deze jongste generatie heeft het idee dat we nu op een punt staan van “do or die”. Klimaatcrisis, elite macht, mensenrechten- dat soort problemen.
