spiderman ffh was an amazing experience that truly left me speechless at the end of it, but the inclusion of a hijabi as a NORMAL classmate who was on screen for most of the time (even if she had a few lines of dialogue) was one of the best parts of the film in my opinion.

zoha rahman is a muslim actress that plays a hijabi classmate who is on peter's trip to europe. focusing on an extra may seem slightly odd but seeing my culture represented on screen as a regular aspect of school life through zoha rahman's character was something I never thought I would experience in a marvel movie.

thank you to the ffh team for including a person of my culture in this film and representing them in a way that breaks stereotypes and thank you to zoha rahman for being one of the people to pave the way for this change.

I am genuinely curious, what are you referring to when you talk about queer baiting in Spiderman?

Hey nonny so like yeah I’m not sure if you saw the hubbub floating around the internet about how Marvel was casting its first ever trans actor (Zack Barack) and its first ever hijabi actress (Zoha Rahman) in Spiderman: Far From Home. In this post I was mainly griping about the trans character, since he was the one people were getting excited about and stuff, talking about how Spiderman / Marvel is so #woke / inclusive / etc and that this was to be one of the first of many strides in Marvel’s journey to diversity etc etc etc. The hijabi character, to my knowledge, only became a topic of discussion m when people saw her in the trailer, but if I’m wrong feel free to correct me.

When I went to see the actual film, it’s not like I was expecting Marvel to pull out a trans hero and a hijabi super spy or anything like that. I knew that Rahman and Barack were both playing Peter’s classmates, so I expected maybe some light banter, maybe a bit of cheesy dialogue—nothing really big, you know? But in the end I was still sorely disappointed.

As it turned out, both Rahman’s and Barack’s characters were little more than glorified background actors with very few lines (aka: almost none at all). Neither of them got much screen time, and honestly with the way it was shot if you weren’t looking for them, your eyes would probably just slide right over them.

Now it can be argued that both their characters aren’t main characters by any stretch and that the film is about Peter’s superhero activities in Europe but honestly, if Marvel wants to be seen as diverse then this was a poor effort, if it even counts as one at all. It’s like Endgame all over again.

Maybe the writers didn’t have space for two more minor characters. That’s fine. If they want to make a background character or two queer, that’s completely their perogative. I’m just saying that they shouldn’t have announced that they were casting a trans actor if said trans actor was just going to be a background character.
