The magic lore in Midnight Suns is amazing and here's why
From the previous issues, we already know that Valtorr is involved and they managed to explain how Stephen and other sorcerers were able to draw power from dark entities without being corrupted. But Midnight Suns #3 dove even deeper into the possibilities and references that Marvel’s magic lore (most often overlooked) can offer in terms of potential plots.
Tumblr media
First of all, here’s a cameo of Asti, a demon who was once loyal to Dormammu and dwells in the Dark Dimension. I’m pointing its appearance because it’s not much of a popular or known character, which is kinda important to me when writing about magic lore, especially Doctor Strange’s. Asti was last seen in New Avengers v4, when Wiccan defeated it. I feel like it was a sweet homage to classic stories and also shows that Ethan Sacks has a good amount of knowledge of this part of the Marvel universe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kushala using Asti’s bat as a ride was also a nice touch and it reminded me of the first Ghost Rider and more “summoning” animals used by other Riders, although this is a more recent reference (and I'm not completely familiar with the Riders so it could have happened before and I wasn’t aware of it).

Now, let’s untangle this panel here. Bear with me.

*breathes in*
The Mhuruuk were the original people who ruled the Dark Dimension before Umar and Dormammu. They are born with magic and were called wizard-kings, until Olnar became friends with the exiled siblings and were deceived by them. Driven by greed, Olnar wanted to conquer more and more realms and annex them to the Dark Dimension, and that’s when he released the Mindless Ones, dying on the battlefield. Orini, Clea’s father, was too young to rule, and so Umar and Dormammu raised and twisted the story to be loved by the kingdom (and yes, Clea is half-faltine, half-mhuruuk).
The Mhuruuk then lost most of their magic and could only perform simple tricks when gathered in groups. They were exhiled until Clea returned and became the rule of Dark Dimension. However, they had a very sad fate when they were forced to fuse with the G'uranthic Guardian by Dormammu. No one could undo said spell, and thus they remained bound to the Guardian forever.
Tumblr media
So, who are these children of the Mhuruuk?  I *think* they’re the offspring of the remaining Mhuruuk who survived the rebellion against Dormammu, before they were fused with the Guardian. They weren’t supposed to ressemble vampires, but it could be a product of their corruption. Dormammu did mention he used a dark spell to mesh them. And why do they hate Clea and want war? Because the Mhuruuk fought to defend her right to rule, but were “abandoned” by her to suffer such miserable fate. Besides, they could resent her for her faltine side. She is, after all, the daughter of Umar.
This is insanely cool because it could open the possibilities to a bigger plot in a DS story. Or even a limited series about Clea and her journey to become the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension!! The potential is all there!! I’m just so excited to see this happen!!
Next, this is not entirely about lore, but I simply loved this moment between Yana and Nico <3 Still, I can’t help but think that they’re doing a better job at portraying Zoe’s past and family than we’ll ever see in SA.
Tumblr media
AAAAND lastly!! Here he is! Sorcerer Supreme Tony Stark, the same character from All-New X-Men Annual #1 and Infamous Iron Man. And am I glad to see a reference from Infamous Iron Man? YES, I AM. I miss you, Bictor ;-;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In any case, this book is just so good when it comes to lore, references, cameos, homages and fanservice. I’m very grateful and actually super surprised with the quality and care this book brings, even though it was made to promote the game. IT’S REALLY GOOD!!

Since the teachers and parents are stuck in a dimension, the students of Strange Academy are left in the school grounds where they are attacked by the forces of Emily Bright, who had been demonically possessed with dark magic. The demonic Emily tries to kill Doyle Dormammu but Iric Brorson takes the blast and dies, saving his friend. The students are left stunned at the sight of Iric's sacrifice and Doyle flies into a rage. Angered over his brother's death, Alvi the surviving twin brother of Iric, charges in to attack Emily. The other students also try to attack Emily but they are overwhelmed by her infernal blast.
With his friends down, Doyle Dormammu is left to clash with the demonic Emily. The final showdown was between Emily and Doyle, ending with Doyle absorbing the Dark Magic from Emily and letting the influence of Dormammu take him over. As he grew to giant proportions, he told everyone to leave before he completely lost control. Fortunately, Doctor Voodoo (Jericho Drumm) and Hoggoth arrived just in time to vanquish the Dark Magic and prevent Doyle from becoming the thing he feared the most. However, it left with a bitter victory, though Doyle doesn't become like Dormammu; Iric Brorson is dead and Emily had left for parts unknown.

What's it like writing Nico, who's usually a part of the Runaways, in the company of a different team?
Ethan Sacks: I really related a lot to Nico. I'm currently writing the third script. So I might gravitate toward others as I get further along. This book finds her without her staff. So, it's set after the events of the most recent Runaways series. She's trying to establish herself without some of that legacy that she inherited from her parent's background. So, she finds herself at a crossroads, and I've enjoyed playing with that. She has a friendship with Magik, and she's very protective of Zoe Laveau who comes from a similar background; where your last name can be toxic based on what your ancestors have done with it.
Ethan Sacks talks about Midnight Suns, a mini-series that brings together a new iteration of the Marvel Universe's premier team of horror heroes (link to interview in comments).

I’m not in a good place mentally to write a review on Midnight Suns #1 but I can tell in advance that this book is GOOD!
As I stated previously, Zoe as a protagonist has such an AMAZING potential and it’s finally being addressed. I'm also aware that Jericho is not part of the team but I can’t help myself but imagine what their apprentice/mentor relationship would be like.
Tumblr media
Also, I feel like Nico will retrieve her staff since there’s no Runaways book currently and they have some liberties to take with this group. AAAAND it makes me really happy that Wong taught Nico some spells!! I need the panels, Marvel!!
Tumblr media
Lastly, yep, Victor did exactly what I said he would xD
Tumblr media
I’m aware that they’ll make an MCUfication of Agatha in the next issues (which I hate) but at least my favorites will interact soon so it’s still a win. I made some live reactions on my twt and some observations (as in, the Vapors of Valtorr being mentioned as dark magic, which could be a reference to Strange Tales). If you want to check them out, it’s still fresh.
PS: Illyana and Kushala teaming -up is like a dream come true!!
Of course, I miss Stephen in this but hheeeey, I have hope he’ll return to regular comics very soon :3
