we won so hard w live action genkai but also lost so bad bc she had like 20 minutes of screen time in all 5 60 minute episodes...

like…my girl fought like hell with what she had left and we got to SEE it in the original series. we got to see that half the reason yusuke ended up at the dark tournament had nothing to do with him and more to do with who his mentor was. genkai and toguro had a difference in life philosophies regarding what it meant to be strong and whether growing old was worth it. toguro wanted to see if he or genkai was right by fighting her student. and jfdskalfjla

and this happens after we’ve spent several episodes with her and yusuke as he’s struggling to absorb the spirit wave orb and we get to see how much she really does fucking care about this dumbass kid and fjdkalfdjsaklfdas

and the live action just said nah fuck that! she just gets a feelingless death off screen after a bland training arc.

genkai plays such a big role in yusuke’s personal journey and it’s such bullshit that they disrespect her character like this in the live action. yusuke would not be who he is without her guidance. and they just treat her like some basic bitch mentor.

man the live action yu yu hakusho hairstyling is Bad, and toguro needs to be Way Bigger but there's only so far they can realistically push that i guess

everything else looks ok though; the fight choreography and costumes outside the hair seem pretty good based on the teaser

I had a point in my life after watching YYH where seeing Hiei would make me go crazy because I thought it was so funny how he's "tiny and gay" and now seeing your icon gives me that urge to do insane Hiei posting again 😭

hi there! dabbling into yyh rarepairs, have you ever considered hiei and botan becoming a thing? i’m kinda leaning to the idea. do you know any good fics or authors i should start with?

I don't ship them and have nothing to recommend. :)

But if it helps, I've seen that pairing pop up so many times in this fandom that I don't consider it a rarepair, and I don't think you'll have trouble finding material to read. Sorting the stories on FFnet by number of reviews yields half a dozen Hiei/Botan stories (plus a bunch of Kurama/Botan stories) on the first couple of pages. I haven't read any of them and can't attest to their quality.

TBH, I think Kurama/Botan and Hiei/Botan are some of the more basic ships in this fandom, and definitely some of the default non-yaoi and non-OC ships. If you want to read a hetero romance story in this fandom that doesn't include an OC, odds are Botan will be a part of the pairing. Such is the fate of being the only woman in the main cast who doesn't have a canonical boyfriend. You get shipped with everyone, all the time, no matter how much sense the pairing makes.

(No shade to people who ship Botan with anyone, btw. It's just that across multiple fandoms, there's a trend of shipping the only notable woman in the cast with every single male character even if the pairing is nonsensical or a poor fit. While some of these fics result in cool character studies, sometimes it's clear the author is just using the female character to avoid writing an OC, mischaracterizing her so badly to make her fit the assigned pairing that she becomes practically unrecognizable. At that point just write a damn OC instead of forcing pairings that don't make sense, jeez...)

The widespread, multi-fandom bias against OCs is a pet peeve of mine, in case you couldn't tell, and this fandom's use of Botan has unfortunately played into that annoyance from time to time. But I'm sure there are many amazing stories with that pairing out there! I just don't have any interest in reading them. Sorry, anon!

do the yu yu hakusho cast come from another god mashine? if not how does demon world coexist with the spirit world? Also are psychics different than fullbringers? Is there a generic term for humans who can use spiritual essence?

Nah, they're just in there for humorous flavoring, rather than like, world-building proper. This isn't a crossover-crossover, it's more like how Batman, Scooby-Doo and Cthulhu all technically live in the same universe. Yes, but also no.

Strictly speaking though, Koenma Jr. is the King of Hell. he's having a hell of a time of it. Literally. the demons making nonstop Hell Puns doesn't help.

I'm gonna need to draw out that "wtf is going on with hollows/fullbringers/quincy/shinigami/beastfolk/psychics/Kami etc." chart but essentially: there are many, MANY ways to accidentally acquire a shitload of psychic energy- Yusuke is actually well on his way to becoming a Shinigami proper if he ever figures out how to infuse Puu into a weapon, Kuwabara and Orihime have a similar kind of reality-carving nonsense they got from being genetically sensitive to the background radiation of the universe, and Tatsuki and Don Kanonji are the spiritual equivalent of Caulerpa taxifolia.

"Psychic" is the generic term used in both Bleach and YYH, so I'm just gonna use that.
