hi there! dabbling into yyh rarepairs, have you ever considered hiei and botan becoming a thing? i’m kinda leaning to the idea. do you know any good fics or authors i should start with?
I don't ship them and have nothing to recommend. :)
But if it helps, I've seen that pairing pop up so many times in this fandom that I don't consider it a rarepair, and I don't think you'll have trouble finding material to read. Sorting the stories on FFnet by number of reviews yields half a dozen Hiei/Botan stories (plus a bunch of Kurama/Botan stories) on the first couple of pages. I haven't read any of them and can't attest to their quality.
TBH, I think Kurama/Botan and Hiei/Botan are some of the more basic ships in this fandom, and definitely some of the default non-yaoi and non-OC ships. If you want to read a hetero romance story in this fandom that doesn't include an OC, odds are Botan will be a part of the pairing. Such is the fate of being the only woman in the main cast who doesn't have a canonical boyfriend. You get shipped with everyone, all the time, no matter how much sense the pairing makes.
(No shade to people who ship Botan with anyone, btw. It's just that across multiple fandoms, there's a trend of shipping the only notable woman in the cast with every single male character even if the pairing is nonsensical or a poor fit. While some of these fics result in cool character studies, sometimes it's clear the author is just using the female character to avoid writing an OC, mischaracterizing her so badly to make her fit the assigned pairing that she becomes practically unrecognizable. At that point just write a damn OC instead of forcing pairings that don't make sense, jeez...)
The widespread, multi-fandom bias against OCs is a pet peeve of mine, in case you couldn't tell, and this fandom's use of Botan has unfortunately played into that annoyance from time to time. But I'm sure there are many amazing stories with that pairing out there! I just don't have any interest in reading them. Sorry, anon!

holy shit, the YYH fandom on fanfiction.net is a GHOST TOWN
pun unintended, but holy SHIT gang, the fandom is seriously dead!
i recently made the choice to leave ffnet permanently for a few reasons:
Most of my work is smutty now, and that kind of content isn't allowed on fanfiction.net per its TOS
The one SFW fic in my roster has now turned smutty, so I can't keep posting, and I REFUSE to chop my story to bits to fit the TOS.
But most importantly: People aren't fostering the fandom anymore, which makes chopping the story to bits NOT EVEN WORTH IT.
like broskis, bruhs, friends and pals, i updated my KuramaxOC fic The Sight Unseen and you know how much engagement it got on ffnet? three comments in six months...but it got MORE THAN 7x THAT AMOUNT on ao3 in even less time
my most recent update has only been out a few weeks and it has ZERO ENGAGEMENT on ffnet, but it's got at least 15 comments on ao3 in the same time...story quality hasn't gone down, it's just that the readership has disappeared
or has it? because the story is getting hits/views on ffnet, it's just that NO ONE IS COMMENTING
here's the kicker: i did get one PM about the story after i updated??? but??? all they did was lecture me for leaving the site WHILE ADMITTING IN THE SAME BREATH THEY NEVER COMMENT ON ANYTHING THEY READ
fandom is community. the only way to forge a community that withstands the test of time is to PARTICIPATE IN IT...so if you're on ffnet and you're wondering why only 50 stories have been created/updated within the last year in the YYH section, and you're a silent reader who doesn't ever comment? hate to break it to ya, bud, but:
YOU'RE THE REASON THE FANDOM IS DYING OVER THERE

I never finished uploading Future Talk onto AO3 due to [many and varied reasons].
Should I finish uploading it? Is there any interest in reading that story on that platform?
One of the aforementioned [many and varied reasons] is that I don't particularly enjoy reading the story anymore, though I respect it as a monument to my writing history and growth. I'd like to know if the time and energy necessary to edit and repost that beast of a work would be wellspent, insofar as it would make at least a few of you happy to see the story transferred.

Thin Ice, or: Hiei and Yukina go on a little walk
I wrote my first ever Hiei & Yukina fic; I've never written Yukina at all before, so tackling her POV was an interesting challenge. And a challenge it certainly fucking was, but I think it paid off!

Do you have plans with writting NQK as non-binary in the future?
Short answer: No. Not the way most people seem to want, anyway.
Long answer: Not explicitly, and definitely not using Western terms.
There are many Doylist Reasons for this.
Since the fic is set in 1990s era Japan, the term "non-binary" isn't in use in Lucky Child's setting. The word just wasn't in use in that place or time. The modern Japanese term is "x-gender," but that won't be in use for a while yet in NQK's world (like the early 2000s).
Pronouns work differently in Japanese than they do in English, so requesting they/them pronouns or the term "non-binary" doesn't make sense for NQK.
I didn't come out as non-binary until the story was like 75% completed. Inserting a "coming-out narrative" into the story would take up time and space in a narrative that was not constructed to support one. I would have to completely shoe-horn it into the story, changing my intentions for the very important, carefully crafted final act. It would bloat an already crowded narrative with something the narrative doesn't need to deliver on all the promises it set up in previous chapters. Inserting a coming-out story so late in the game would not make for good storytelling.
There are also Watsonian Reasons.
There are hints of NQK's dissatisfaction with gender throughout the story. From challenging Minato's treatment of them to Botan's observations of NQK's wardrobe, it's easy to pinpoint moments where evidence of their shirking of gender norms shines through. (The signs of my eventual coming-out are very obvious to me in retrospect.)
But while the signs are there, NQK is a very busy person who has a lot on their plate. Preventing the end of the world, being embroiled in a plot involving gods and goddesses, maintaining canon... they have a lot on their mind. And honestly? Their gender is the last thing on it. They are too freakin' busy to pay it any mind right now. In a few years, maybe. But right now, they're too distracted to care much.
Frankly, if anyone asked Keiko what their gender was at this point the story, they would look at them and awkwardly laugh, perplexed. They would feel uncomfortable, and they would begrudgingly likely say they were a girl, and then they would try not to think about it because the answer made them anxious for reasons they couldn't quite articulate. But that's as far as things would go right now, and they would make no declarations of import. Not right now, anyway.
Circling back to a Doylist perspective, NQK's continued "pursuit of self" can be read as an allegory for a gender coming-out story. They are constantly trying to find and assert their independent identity apart from the one assigned to them at birth (the identity of "Yukimura Keiko"). It's very easy to find this allegory within the text considering my own gender, and it's one I suspect I subconsciously inserted prior to coming out.
Compounding all of that, I started writing this story before I came out. The version of me who exists in the story is based on the version of me who existed before I came out. My real self and my fictional avatar have grown in different ways and in different directions. To quote Robert Frost, "two roads diverged in a yellow wood," and NQK and I can each only take one of those roads at a time. I set her path at the start of her story, and I don't intend to pull her down a different one so late in the narrative.
I took one road. NQK took another. Perhaps down the line we will travel the same path again, and perhaps that path will bear the name "non-binary," but for now, we explore different avenues of the gender world.
Tumblr media
So, to sum up?
NQK's pronouns right now are she/they, and while I consider them non-binary, they are not quite there yet in terms of their own thinking.
My pronouns, meanwhile, are firmly they/them, and my label is likewise firmly "non-binary."

— ❝ THE DIE THAT WAS CAST ❞ ft. KURAHI DRABBLE
NOTE ! established relationship, kurama x hiei, this was supposed to be a whole one shot but i've been having trouble getting back into the groove of writing v_v so i'm shoving it off into the void to get it out of my drafts
SUMMARY ! kurama is tired of being perfect all the time. the strong one, the dependable one, the perfect one. hiei knows exactly what he needs.
Life is demanding…in a different way, Kurama notes to himself. Gone are the days of thievery and battle; of physical exertion and bloodlust. Everything needed to be precise now.
The longer he kept up his perfect son act, the longer he felt the term narrow. The image had to be held up higher and higher. He had to constantly outperform himself in every facet of his life.
He had a stepfather to impress. A younger brother to lead. A mother to keep warm.
Kurama’s laptop is knocked to the ground from his desk the second he steps through his bedroom door. The bag he had carried home from work immediately dropped to the carpet as his eyes dart to the sound.
The gossamer of his curtains drifts leisurely by the breeze.
Hiei plops down on Kurama’s bedsheets, shirtless and sweaty and still slightly coated in dirt. Leaning against the pillows, he eyes the fox with a calculating crimson stare.
“What’s wrong?”
Kurama sighs. Rolls the sleeves of his white linen shirt before approaching his desk and lifting his laptop. Readjusting the items on his desk back into organized neatness. Closing the windows, and eventually the drapes.
“Nothing,” his voice is casual; normal. “Just that my boyfriend has intruded into my home and has promptly made a huge mess.”
Hiei smirks from where he’s seated on the bed, shoes on top of the sheets no less. “Don’t put anything by the window if you don’t want me to knock it over.”
“You could use the door, you know,” Kurama retrieves his bag from the floor to proceed with his daily ritual. Emptying its contents. Setting up for another round of work before eventually getting dinner ready. “You’re not a stranger in this house.”
“I am as long as you are.”
Kurama pauses in his motions. The laptop slowly reboots. Black screen reflecting his practiced face, controlled emotions. Bright red hair smooth and shiny. Emerald eyes clear and intelligent. He looks nothing like himself. The screen turns blue and Kurama straightens once again.

Hello, I saw this post of yukina and want to know why do you think that yukina is a character made of wasted potential?
I think I wrote about this at length on my other blog, but basically Yukina gets very little screentime and is never given a character arc of her own, and that's a shame considering all she has to offer.
She has an incredibly interesting backstory in her own right that gives her unique motivations and goals. She's been through hell and back at the hands of horrible people. She hails from a unique society with unusual customs that are challenged by her new experiences. These are just some of the hallmarks of a character with potential for juicy growth.
And yet most of the time, the narrative treats her as a girl for Kuwabara to rescue, and then for Hiei to rescue, and then for Kuwabara to pine after, and lastly as a device to highlight Hiei's self-loathing.
Think about everything the narrative COULD explore: She could have PTSD from years of torment by Tarukane, hangups over gender thanks to the Koorime, and the need to unlearn years of Koorime propaganda driven by her desire to fit in with outsiders despite all she's been taught to fear (not to mention the internal biases she'd have to fight against thanks to her personal experiences that validated what the Koorime told her about outsiders in the first place). Perhaps she'd want to learn to fight to defend herself after all she's been through, and don't get me STARTED on what else the narrative could be doing about her relationship with Hiei...
All of that and more is just sitting there, waiting to be explored. But the narrative just ignores it and just makes her a mildly cheerful cheerleader most of the time.
Only once do we get a peek at what really lies inside her head (during the scene with Hiei toward the end of the series), but it's brief, and it's mostly there for Hiei's characterization, not hers.
The most interesting things about Yukina, for me, are the things canon never bothered to tell us about.
Wasted potential, man. Wasted potential.

"Future Talk" Editing Log - Chapter 19
February 1, 2024
I forgot I used Japanese honorifics throughout this fanfic.
Why oh why did I use Japanese honorifics throughout this fanfic!?
I do think they can be used judiciously (to indicate social hierarchies and relationships, etc.), but I was inconsistent with how they were used. They stick out like a series of sore thumbs bashed by a culturally tone-deaf hammer. I need to go back and look at the previously edited chapters and see how I handled them. So far in chapters 17-19, I've been taking them out as I go unless they're somehow relevant to the plot or characterization.

I’m going to share my pages for fanfiction. I have not been able to write in awhile but I do plan to continue, as well as re write some of my older fics.
Now that being said, some of my fics are bad. And I know that, some were literally just for fun that friends and I decided to post nothing major. But I want to get back into writing again, especially my most recent fic that was for yyh and my series for Loki the God Of Mischief in the MCU. But I have a lot of one shots on there, a lot of them have suggestive and mature content. But I feel like it can’t hurt to share them again.
I am also on Archive Of Our Own under the same username
