If kuwabara ever finds out that hiei and yukina are twins what would his reaction be like? I know it's just me, who thinks that kuwabara deserves to know but I'm curious about how this information might affect kuwabara's relationship with hiei and yukina?!

I don't think it would change his view of Yukina as a person AT ALL to learn she and Hiei are related, but I do think it would make him be a bit softer toward Hiei. "There's some of Yukina's goodness buried inside you; there has to be!" I can see him saying in anguished desperation while Hiei chases him down with a sword.

But in all seriousness, while the nature of the twins thing itself wouldn't matter to Kuwabara, he'd be hurt the information was purposefully kept from him. The timing of the Big Reveal, as well as the method of that reveal, would determine how the revelation impacts his relationship with Yukina.

We saw him react with anguish when Genkai's death was kept from him, and while the connection between Hiei and Yukina isn't quite as dire, he would feel a mixture of embarrassment and hurt at being the only person excluded. This would all be shrouded in anger until he sorted through his emotions and found pain at the heart of them.

While I headcanon that Yukina knows EXACTLY who her brother is, she acts clueless in front of Hiei and everyone else. If someone leaked the info in a group setting before Yukina had publicly declared she knew Hiei was her brother, I can see this bringing them a bit closer together... or at least, that's how Kuwabara would initially perceive it. Kuwabara would insert himself into a "white knight" role and first direct his anger at Hiei for keeping secrets, and then at everyone else for enabling that behavior. He'd be on Yukina's side and be angry on her behalf. (I do think Yukina would step in at that point and tell him to back down, because she already suspected the truth and was waiting for Hiei to come to her, but Kuwabara would still perceive himself and Yukina to be united in the "no one told either of us" camp, so he wouldn't be mad at Yukina in this scenario.)

If Yukina learned the truth and everyone continued to keep the secret from Kuwabara alone for whatever reason, he'd probably get mad at Yukina, too, for leaving him in the dark. But I think he'd get over it eventually, because, well... it's Yukina.

I think there's a possibility that Yukina could learn the truth for certain and keep it from Kuwabara because she and Kuwabara are not actually all that close (see my previous asks on this subject). If he found out she kept that info from him despite his attempts to woo her and in spite of his perception of their closeness, there's a chance the realization that she didn't consider him a person worth sharing the info with would damage their relationship (or at least his desire to pursue one with her). It would highlight the imbalance in their relationship, and he might not be able to find equilibrium again.

And all of the above would change a bit depending on how Kuwabara and Yukina's relationship grew and developed over time. I've written in the past that I don't think Yukina sees Kuwabara as a romantic partner and that their relationship is one-sided. If Kuwabara is still in puppy love with her, if they've progressed to an actual relationship, if they're in a committed one, if Kuwabara broke it off to be just friends... all of these situations would see a different result.

I’d like to think that after NQK’s secret gets out, she starts to spoil games and movies (probably ones that have been released recently or will be in the near future) when Yusuke gets a little bit too much to handle. Especially games and movies he was hyped for.

She threatens to spoil the current game he's playing whenever he gets out of line. Sometimes she doesn't actually know how it ends, but he can't actually tell which ones she knows and doesn't know, so the threats WORK. He doesn't take chances with Dragon Quest!

Dont know if you read webtoons, but there is one called bride of the fox and the fox in question resembles yoko kurama so much, from the hair, to height, to eye color. I dont kow if that was intentional on the authors end but it made me swoon for him very easily

(If this has already been asked before, sorry! Feel free to just say that) Did you ever consider having NQK be reborn as a different character instead? So like a Not-Quite-Yusuke. What made you chose Keiko, or was it not even a question from the start?

It was always Keiko. I still have screenshots of the conversation where I came up with the idea to use her. It was an experiment to see if I could do something interesting with the character a lot of fans claim to hate for the crime of being "useless."

(This isn't her fault; it's Togashi's, and I stand by that.)

And also this show is full of mass murderers and terrible people, and if KEIKO of all people is someone's most hated character? They're probably a misogynist tbh. I will not be accepting criticism for that statement.

Briefly I did toy with the idea of using Maya from Kurama's past instead, but Keiko's longterm presence in the story felt way more interesting to me/provided way more fodder for the story overall.

Y'know, it's funny, but since I started publicly connecting my TikTok (@star_sama13) to my fanfic writing, I've been getting that comment a lot! It's gratifying to know I'm recognizably "me" in my writing and that I didn't exaggerate or underplay my personality significantly.

I actually met a fanfic friend in real life recently, and after a few minutes together, they looked at me in silence for a bit before going, "Oh yeah. That's NQK all right." I almost died laughing!

This weirdly makes me more confident in how I've chosen to write about myself and my personality. You always worry with creative nonfiction/personal essay about the legitimacy and accuracy of your own voice, and that worry extends to LC given how personal it is. Thank you for the vote of confidence, is what I'm saying.

Are kuwabara and hiei really friends? I saw some headcanons where hiei actually likes kuwabara and ships him with yukina( I don't believe these headcanons)it's weird but i'm not sure whether kuwabara and hiei consider each other as friends what do you think?

I don't think Hiei ships Kuwabara and Yukina. Definitely not. The three are basically never all on-screen at the same time, so there's not much to examine to support the theory.

I do think Kuwabara and Hiei are friends. TBH, much as I love the dub of the anime, they play up the enmity between Hiei and Kuwabara quite a bit, and to me their relationship reads as somewhat less contentious in the subtitled version.

I don't think they're as close as some fans seem to think they are. Like I see a lot of fan-canons that are like "Hiei secretly thinks Kuwabara is the single greatest person on earth" and then go to great lengths to describe a level of depth and appreciation that isn't shown in the text, so I don't really agree with that fan-canon, either.

In short, I think they're friends, specifically the type formed from being forced into a "Get Along Shirt." There's a begrudging nature at play, but over time they've been through the wringer together, and they appreciate the other person deep down. They bicker, but they trust each other, and that's nice! But by the same token, by the end of the series they appear to have fallen largely out of touch, and I'm not sure either of them is terribly broken up about it.

BUT! I think if they had to work together again, they'd slip right back into their old dynamic easily, trust still intact and strong. And you definitely need a solid foundation to a friendship to accomplish that.

Hi! I had a really hard time this past year and a half personally and professionally and I stopped reading fic at all. Things have slowed down and I'm getting back on my feet, and to cheer myself up and treat myself for working hard, I've started rereading Lucky Child from the start to refresh my memory for the new stuff. I used to follow closely, and I'm sorry if this sounds cheesy or silly, but it feels a little like getting in touch with friends I havent seen in awhile. Thanks for writing!

Do you have plans with writting NQK as non-binary in the future?

Short answer: No. Not the way most people seem to want, anyway.

Long answer: Not explicitly, and definitely not using Western terms.

There are many Doylist Reasons for this.

Since the fic is set in 1990s era Japan, the term "non-binary" isn't in use in Lucky Child's setting. The word just wasn't in use in that place or time. The modern Japanese term is "x-gender," but that won't be in use for a while yet in NQK's world (like the early 2000s).

Pronouns work differently in Japanese than they do in English, so requesting they/them pronouns or the term "non-binary" doesn't make sense for NQK.

I didn't come out as non-binary until the story was like 75% completed. Inserting a "coming-out narrative" into the story would take up time and space in a narrative that was not constructed to support one. I would have to completely shoe-horn it into the story, changing my intentions for the very important, carefully crafted final act. It would bloat an already crowded narrative with something the narrative doesn't need to deliver on all the promises it set up in previous chapters. Inserting a coming-out story so late in the game would not make for good storytelling.

There are also Watsonian Reasons.

There are hints of NQK's dissatisfaction with gender throughout the story. From challenging Minato's treatment of them to Botan's observations of NQK's wardrobe, it's easy to pinpoint moments where evidence of their shirking of gender norms shines through. (The signs of my eventual coming-out are very obvious to me in retrospect.)

But while the signs are there, NQK is a very busy person who has a lot on their plate. Preventing the end of the world, being embroiled in a plot involving gods and goddesses, maintaining canon... they have a lot on their mind. And honestly? Their gender is the last thing on it. They are too freakin' busy to pay it any mind right now. In a few years, maybe. But right now, they're too distracted to care much.

Frankly, if anyone asked Keiko what their gender was at this point the story, they would look at them and awkwardly laugh, perplexed. They would feel uncomfortable, and they would begrudgingly likely say they were a girl, and then they would try not to think about it because the answer made them anxious for reasons they couldn't quite articulate. But that's as far as things would go right now, and they would make no declarations of import. Not right now, anyway.

Circling back to a Doylist perspective, NQK's continued "pursuit of self" can be read as an allegory for a gender coming-out story. They are constantly trying to find and assert their independent identity apart from the one assigned to them at birth (the identity of "Yukimura Keiko"). It's very easy to find this allegory within the text considering my own gender, and it's one I suspect I subconsciously inserted prior to coming out.

Compounding all of that, I started writing this story before I came out. The version of me who exists in the story is based on the version of me who existed before I came out. My real self and my fictional avatar have grown in different ways and in different directions. To quote Robert Frost, "two roads diverged in a yellow wood," and NQK and I can each only take one of those roads at a time. I set her path at the start of her story, and I don't intend to pull her down a different one so late in the narrative.

I took one road. NQK took another. Perhaps down the line we will travel the same path again, and perhaps that path will bear the name "non-binary," but for now, we explore different avenues of the gender world.

So, to sum up?

NQK's pronouns right now are she/they, and while I consider them non-binary, they are not quite there yet in terms of their own thinking.

My pronouns, meanwhile, are firmly they/them, and my label is likewise firmly "non-binary."

Due to... confusion... canon!Keiko has two birthdays? I think the manga claimed January 31 and then later claimed her birthday was August 24. This makes Keiko either an Aquarius or a Virgo.

BUUUUT since I'm a September Virgo, I use Keiko's January birthday in order to increase the angst for NQK! If they had the same zodiac sign, NQK might be able to take some comfort in that, but I refuse to make things easy on NQK. :)

Thus, the signs in the moodboard are meant to highlight the different times of year they were born.
