Hello!! how are you? Can i have N25 (Seperately) with a reader who's a big fan of Niigo and is the biggest fan of the characters? And when they decided to hang out (The reader still doesnt know they're part of N25) The reader started rambling about how much they love them like "Woah Enanan's illustration is so good!", "Yuki's voice is so nice!!" Etc etc. (Basically Niigo members with a S/o who's a big fan of them and decides to gush about them without knowing)
IDK WHY BUT I THINK THIS WOULD BE SO ADORABLE Especially Ena bcs my girl needs some love!!!! (ALL OF THEM NEEDS LOVE‼️‼️‼️)
I apologize if this is confusing,, I hope you're having a great week, Don't forget to take a break, and don't overwork yourself!!!
- 🦅 anon
HDFJDJJFG NO DW THIS IS SO CUTES I LOVE THIS IDEA !!! have a great week too, and I hope u like this !! <3
♤ GUSHING ABOUT THEM - Kanade Yoisaki, Mafuyu Asahina, Ena Shinonome and Mizuki Akiyama x Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kanade:
You had discovered Niigo on a random late night, and the composing work done by K had blown you away after the first listen!
At the same time of your discovery, you met Kanade, a homebody you bumped into while out and about, but you got along with her pretty well
You had days planned with her where you would go to visit her house, talking with her about random things and making sure that she was eating well
As she was eating your meal, you saw her keyboard by her desk, and was immediately reminded of Niigo and the wonderful composer of the group
"Hey Kanade, have you ever heard of this group called Niigo?" You missed the way she freezes, food in hand as she hesitantly shook her head. "Um...I don't think so? They sound interesting though."
You nodded, a grin spreading across your lips as you rambled, "Oh my god, you should totally listen to their music! Their composer, K? They're so incredible, their music really speaks to me!"
She was trying to keep her cool, but she was smiling, a warm flush settling over her face as she heard you gushing about...her. It made her heart flutter at your adoration for both sides of her <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mafuyu:
When you first discovered Niigo, you were completely blown away by the lyrics. They spoke to you, and you grew a big appreciation for Yuki, their lyricist!
You had met Mafuyu while you both were on your way to school, and her smiley disposition was always nice to be around, even if things felt a bit...off at times
She had grown used to having you accompany her as you both walked to school, finding that being around you always left a sort of warmth in her chest
You were talking with her as the both of you made your way to school, a faint melody of a random song reminding you of your late night discovery
"Oh, Mafuyu, have you heard of Niigo?" She seemed to pause a bit in her steps, face dropping slightly before she looked to you, giving that same smile, "Ah, not really! What is that?"
You were quick to launch into a tangent, enthusiasm in your tone, "I don't know if they'd be your style, but they're a music group! I especially love their lyrics, Yuki is such a talented person!"
She didn't usually feel any emotions, but to witness your delight as you talked about something she had done, no good girl persona attached? It made her feel something she never felt before <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ena:
You had been drawn to Niigo's music by the illustrations in the first place, finding that every single drawing was perfect for the song it went with, solidifying your awe for Enanan
You happened to bump into Ena by chance as she was on her way to night school and you were out and about, but the two of you managed to make quick friends
She loved to take you around to different spots so that she could take pictures for her social media, finding that your company always made it more fun!
As the two of you sat together in a restaurant, you noticed a couple of drawings nearby that reminded you of the group and illustrator you had discovered
"Ooh, Ena, have you heard of Niigo before?" She almost dropped her phone, looking up at you in surprise before quickly covering up by shaking her head. "Uhh...No? Should I know them?"
You laughed, shaking your head as you rambled, "I mean, they're very good! I love their music, but I mostly love them for the work their illustrator, Enanan, does! Their drawings are so pretty!"
Her heart swells almost immediately upon hearing your compliments, barely able to hide her big grin. All she wants is to be recognized for her art, and you seem to do just that <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mizuki:
You had clicked on a Niigo video by either sheer coincidence or pure accident, but the production and overall look of the music videos kept you hooked, Amia's style really keeping you drawn in
You met Mizuki while both of you were out shopping, and they ended up claiming you as one of the people they bring along to the mall
They love making cute outfits for you both, but they also look around for inspiration for their music videos every now and then. They don't tell you that though
While the two of you were out together, you found something that reminded you of a Niigo music video, which made you light up and ask your mall buddy about them
"Hey Mizuki, do you know Niigo?" They froze, almost dropping the bags in thier hands as they looked over at you before tilting their head, "Hm, not really! Are they cute?"
You hummed, shrugging, "I mean, they're a faceless group, but their music is so good! Plus, all of their music videos are gorgeous, Amia does such a good job at connecting the videos with the music!"
They swore they could die happy in that moment, eyes sparkling as they tried their best to hide how happy your praise made them. They appreciated your words more than you would ever know <3

'Given' and grief
The first time we see Mafuyu think about Yuki consciously in given is in code 4.
And what we see him thinking is that he doesn't feel lonely.
Mafuyu thinks here, even when he knows he'll never see Yuki again, he still doesn't feel lonely because he still carries something within himself that Yuki loved.
Tumblr media
And this was Mafuyu being in denial about Yuki actually really being gone. He was still trying to rationalise it.
“I am not lonely!” he protests, “The person that I loved so much, couldn't just become nothing! As long as I'm here, he is here somehow!”
Tumblr media
And he keeps carrying Yuki's guitar everywhere, symbolising that burden. That thing that Yuki loved, yes, but Mafuyu wasn't a part of.
__________________
Then the story progresses. Mafuyu learns to play guitar. Mafuyu makes new friends, he learns to smile again and be excited, he starts to fall in love again. He starts to heal.
THEN Fuyunohanashi happens.
And we see him starting the song with, “I'm not lonely”, again.
Tumblr media
He is back there. He is protesting, “you are not gone! You can not be gone! You are still in my head! Everywhere you once were you still are!!”
Tumblr media
He has healed meanwhile, yes, from when given manga started to when FnH happened, he has. But he still hasn't come to terms with it.
And then, while performing this song, while on stage, this sudden realisation strikes,
Tumblr media
“I am so lonely” he thinks. He has started to realise that Yuki is fading, Yuki's memory, his presence that Mafuyu imagined, they're fading slowly, and that is sad! That's why he is lonely!
After the performance of FnH, Mafuyu thinks again, “I am not lonely”, and this time it's not regarding Yuki. This is the general feel of it, Mafuyu isn't lonely anymore. He has friends, he has someone new he loves, he has started to heal, and with that comes the feeling of guilt.
Tumblr media
“I wish I could tell you this!” I wish I could find closure from you!
_______________________
And then we get the extra chapter 'Umi E'. Expanding on the on stage "I am so lonely" panel!
Mafuyu realised on that 'blindingly bright stage' what 'loneliness' means. It's the healing part of the trauma. It's the guilt of letting go of the person who isn't here anymore.
Tumblr media
If Mafuyu forgets Yuki bit by bit, which will certainly happen, because people can't keep living with someone's vivid memories forever, then who'll remember the Yuki that only Mafuyu knew? He will really be gone forever! And thinking about that is sad! And THAT is loneliness.
_______________________
Mafuyu is still there during CAC. Even though he has moved on, even though he is totally in love with Ritsuka and committed to him, it still feels like betraying Yuki somehow. The more he grows, the more he changes, the more the distance with Yuki grows.
Tumblr media
Remember, that line in yorugaakeru that literally says, “even though you're not here, I can still continue to live on, in the end, that's what makes me sad.”
This part of grieving isn't talked about as much as it should be. It's the guilt you feel when you heal.
_________________________
This brings us to the last arc of 'given'.
There were many things going on with RitsuMafu the last arc, but part of why playing 'Umi E' for Mafuyu without telling Mafuyu was bad idea was because it meant forcing Mafuyu to confront something that he had no intention of confronting just yet.
But turned out it was for the best. At least for Mafuyu to realise that he has actually really moved on. He doesn't feel guilt for letting go of Yuki anymore. From the time they performed YgA to the SYH concert, Mafuyu has healed more.
See, compared to the first 'to the sea' memories, the last 'to the sea' memories are so blurry! He really forgot the details!
Tumblr media
It's just a vague feeling of nostalgia to Mafuyu now! And it's still anxiety inducing, yes, especially seeing that he was already dreading everything.
But there's no guilt to be found of letting go of Yuki. His only concerns are not being able to connect to Ritsuka now.
Yuki is not somewhere inside Mafuyu anymore, or he doesn't feel pressured to keep him close to heart anymore. He has accepted the truth. He has found closure. Yuki is a memory now. A fond memory, preserved in a song, the memories are blurrier still. And Mafuyu is happy with that. Forgetting the details doesn't make him lonely or guilty anymore.
Tumblr media
Which is why the last chapter we got, where just after being confronted by 'Yuki's song', Mafuyu still isn't sad or guilt ridden at all, he is sparkling and eager to perform alongside Ritsuka, he is so happy that he almost proposed to him, is so special!

Next unit from the unit swap, time for the idol group!
An idol group full of secrets, looking for their dreams.
Despite being an idol group, they have kind of a mysterious vibe, and also have a lot of issues. Though it is not a Mafuyization of Tsukusa, if anything Tsukasa has more parallels with Airi here-
Also reminder I created a discord server, not only for this AU, but for all Unit Swap AUs in general, so don’t hesitate to join!
Some trivia about this unit under the read more!
- Tsukasa is the leader, the order is Tsukasa -> Rui -> Airi -> Mafuyu.
- As said with the previous band, Saki never got better, and because Tsukasa wanted to become a star that could even reach her in her hospital room, and went on the idol path. He still managed to forget why he wanted to become a star though.
- Their SEKAI is nearly an endless maze of old-looking stages, like a old theater scene, a kabuki scene, a steampunk scene, a retro TV show scene, a coliseum, etc.
- Lika MMJ, they’re a freelance group who stream on internet. One of their more popular series of stream, outside of their shows, is Tsukasa, Airi and Mafuyu testing Rui’s inventions.
- Even though Tsukasa is the unit leader, Airi is the one teaching the others the ropes into being an idol since, well, she’s the only one with idol experience here.
- Mafuyu still has her issues with her self and her true feelings. Furthermore, her mom doesn’t know that she joined an idol group, and only think that she is participating to a study group with genius like students like Rui. Mafuyu is also maintaining her anonymity by wearing a mask and going by the name Yuki. Surely, nothing bad is going to happen once her mom discover the truth.
- Airi and Mafuyu are in the same class, and once Airi learns about Mafuyu’s issues, she becomes dead set into helping her. This is partly due because she feels guilty about not having been able to help Ena in middle school, and is lowkey projecting her guilt and issues into Mafuyu. Still, in the group, Airi is Mafuyu’s biggest support (even if the whole group is trying to help Mafuyu)

About Mafuyu's feelings for Uenoyama
I said I would talk more in dept about this discussed topic and then I never did. Since we were in the middle of a crisis I decided to wait to see how it would play out but the latest chapter had an "unexpected" connection to a draft I had already written. So here's the way I see it.
I think it's impossible to discuss this matter without taking a moment to consider who Mafuyu is and the issue of something I will address as his voice. Now, we know he's a very reserved person, one who doesn't voice what he's feeling often and struggles to express it because he himself can't really discern it sometimes. He grew up with a father who silenced him and he later relied on Yuki to connect with others. Since they met Yuki became his voice, even in their group of friends he was the core that kept them all together. When he lost Yuki he also lost his own voice, he couldn't connect to his own emotions and that led him astray from his friends. But it began even before that and led to that last misunderstanding. It all started with music. Yuki didn't realize that Mafuyu felt left out and that he wanted to share music as well - not just for sake of it but because he liked it too, meanwhile Mafuyu failed to notice Yuki's inner struggle. I'll come back later to his last words to him.
Uenoyama enters the picture at this point, after Mafuyu's link to music was severed, he lost the person he loved and he wandered the world with so much to say he couldn't make sense of it; when he was silenced yet again. The first thing that happens is that Mafuyu finds out the guitar can be repaired, a new chord can give it new life. He hears its sound again when he thought he never would and that it was forever broken. At first it was probably just that. Uenoyama was just a teacher, someone who could make him connect to music, feel close to Yuki again and to everything that he felt. He woke up his heart that was so tired he felt almost numb. There was something in the way Uenoyama loved music that was different and at the same time familiar. It was similarities and chance that brought them together because Mafuyu didn't even know what he liked when it came to music but he liked when Uenoyama played and he latched on to him because of that, because it connected him back to music, something he was already passionate about even though he didn't know. It had driven him and Yuki apart but as it is established later he liked it too, as always he just didn't know how to express it. More importantly it made him feel again. It was without a doubt heightened by all the time he spent not feeling since Yuki's death, or more precisely forcing himself not to feel the loneliness, the sadness, the anger, the regret and so on.
Getting music back in his life was probably a way to understand what happened to Yuki better and to rekindle their connection. But also to make amend because he wanted Yuki to choose between him and music but he shouldn't have to. And this plays later on, the choice, even if it was so easy to just live it together they failed to make it work and it scared him to the point he believed he would have to give something up. He saw it happen again with Akihiko and Ugetsu and it reinforced his fears. But back to the start. The music the guys made was something Mafuyu liked and could relate to. He tried something else as Uenoyama told him to but it didn't feel the same, he probably needed their passion too because it felt familiar.
At that point Uenoyama was a mean to an end, there was something that made him stick out but it wasn't love at first sight, Mafuyu was still hang up to what happened with Yuki, he wasn't ready to fall in love again nor to understand it. I don't even think he was looking for it. He was driven by the little spark music ignited in him again. It was a way to not feel alone, it brought him friends, hobbies, a band. It was more than music, Uenoyama gave him a full and pleasant life back. It was slowly getting less and less cold while he was stuck in that that eternal winter with Yuki. It even led him to reconnect with Hiiragi and Shizusumi.
Of course Uenoyama is not an inanimate object and he is not a mirror image of Yuki. But that's for later, their differences are what is there to learn. To have him teach him Mafuyu had also to get to know him, which was easier than Mafuyu was used to. He tried to deny feeling lonely but he had disconnected to all the people he knew before and he's not shown having any new friend, barely interacting with anyone, which is to be expected when he can't speak because he doesn't know what to say and it makes him hurt even more so he just denies it. But they had something to talk about, something that connected them and all the other people Mafuyu got close to since he started playing. Once again it was music. But this time he understood it too. Uenoyama taught him how to make it close to him and what he liked.
Here we enter the crucial point of my analysis. My entire perspective relies on a single phrase in the anime ending. Because when I read its translation it lit up a new understanding in me of a recurring thing Mafuyu thinks about Uenoyama. The ending says "we ask ourselves, are we good people?" and I think this is something Mafuyu truly needs to know, because after what he said to Yuki the last time can he have never regretted his wording? Was he right in what he felt? Can he have never asked himself if that fight was the right way to go? And so Mafuyu more than once notices a single thing about Uenoyama that has nothing to do with music, nothing to do with Yuki, nothing to do with him. He's kind.
Let's make a little deep dive into some little moments which I find relevant in the development of Mafuyu's feelings and the way he started to discern Uenoyama and music little by little.
Now at the very beginning there is that scene where Uenoyama pulls Mafuyu away from a passing car, maybe it's just me reading too much into it but I think Mafuyu's expression indicates some deeper meaning. I'm going metaphorical here but I think it sort of resembles the way Yuki protected him from his dad, something Mafuyu let happen, almost absentmindedly, not really knowing what to do about it or how wrong it was. I think he felt that once again, in the middle of the numbness, also he realized Uenoyama's words held some truth, he really wasn't just trying to get rid of him but telling him the best thing to do for his sake. In fact, after that he actually listens to him and tries his way. He doesn't like it and that's it. A similarity but also a first glance into Uenoyama's personality.
Tumblr media
Before that Mafuyu had grabbed Uenoyama but he didn't even notice because he was solely focused on music and learning how to play, but this time it was Uenoyama to do it and so unexpected Mafuyu felt it, a physical closeness he probably hadn't felt for a while.
In a way it was also gratefulness at first. Mafuyu had been feeling lonely even before Yuki died but now he's not anymore and he doesn't want to lose that so he grows even more attached to Uenoyama.
When Uenoyama asks him to join the band he refuses because he doesn't know how to express himself, he never did but after Yuki he is terrified to be misinterpreted. More people listening to him would cause more people to not understand him. But Uenoyama shows him that's not true. That he understood he was hurt. First he shouts tells him his song touched him. He was always trying to understand him and was patient with him. Then he writes the song for him, giving form to his feelings. After that we see Mafuyu socializing more, smiling even. It's a little step and we see in which direction, the one where Uenoyama guides him. He wants Uenoyama's approval because he feels that's the direction he should be headed to, kindness and a new voice.
When Hiiragi asks him if he's stuck or moving forward he doesn't know because he's still in a limbo where everything he has inside keeps him detached from the world, he's trying, not really knowing himself if it will work. He hesitates, he's stuck, he can't write the song, but Uenoyama reiterates his faith in him so he tries. He first tells him in a vague way what he's trying to convey and then actually gets to polishing his words, but it's a slow process and he still struggles and it causes tension. Right at this time Mafuyu sees Uenoyama for who he is one more time.
Tumblr media
Confronting his past, like Akihiko said, talking to Hiiragi and his own insecurities and doubts, admitting his confusion even to himself he does find the words but he still doesn't say them. He doesn't sing at the rehearsals and he feels the loss of trust around him.
It's when Uenoyama finally gives up too that he breaks down and something snaps again, physically represented by that same guitar chord breaking again but most importantly inside.
Tumblr media
Uenoyama was the first to believe in him, to tell him he can use his voice to express himself. He gave him a voice again, a way, a place, a stage and music to express himself, it was freeing, it lifted a burden on his shoulders because he could finally process and push out what he was feeling. So when Uenoyama gives up it feels like a condemnation. If even him doesn't believe he can do it anymore how can he believe in himself? How can he hope to make other people understand what he himself struggles to grasp? He made a mistake again, he let down Uenoyama too, he wasn't able to make himself be heard again.
At this point Uenoyama is an anchor, yes, but it's also something new, he's not just a link to his past, he's a hope in the future too. He is a very distinct person. When the second chord breaks it's about Yuki AND Uenoyama because it was a repeat of the same thing but it was about disappointing Uenoyama and losing the life he was just getting back together. (Do I feel like this means Mafuyu needs to distance himself and find his own way? Yes, but it's not bad to rely on other people when you struggle with yourself, to seek help. He needs to do it step by step and I think the current arc it's about that too, finding himself while balancing his relationship and his interests. But this is just how I feel)
But Uenoyama being Uenoyama, kind and dependable if a bit emotional and inexperienced, realizes his own mistake, the damage he was doing and fixes it again; even going to the extent of asking Mafuyu's permission to do it because he knows it's more than the physical "wound". That wasn't the end, he stuck around, he asked to change the chord - even though Mafuyu could do it by himself by then - to make amend. He does even more, he explains his own confusion, his own mistake. In doing so he shows him that it happens to everyone from time to time and that it's okay.
Tumblr media
At this point Mafuyu admires Uenoyama, he sees him as an example. So for him to say he doesn't know what to say, that even he - kind and confident - can be misunderstood, can struggle with his words, can express the opposite of what he intends to... it's huge. Because despite that he keeps trying and it is because while he's saying it he's also admitting he likes this mess better than the clarity from before. That is what gives Mafuyu the confidence to sing, to speak, to make his inner thoughts heard again, because it doesn't matter how much of it he can put out there, as long as something does, as long as someone hears and understands.
The first chord change made his heart beat again, it got him moving, the first one was about Yuki, it "fixed" him as in it started his healing process. The second is about his new life, finding an outlet. The song is about all that he's started to process since then. And we know that Mafuyu needs to elaborate things before he can talk about them (it's even spelled out for us later) and that means what he says is what he has in a way "moved past". So even if in these kind of things there is no easy fix, no turning point and he still has a lot to work on, I think we can confidently say that by the end of the live he's fully conscious of what this new stage in his life entails.
That is why he can finally cry. That is why after Uenoyama kisses him he can admit he likes him, because he can now see things a little bit more clearly. If they had gotten together before that I would think of Uenoyama as a "replacement" but that is not what happened.
I think the ambiguity lies in the way we can see the new chord replace the old one as if nothing happened but that's not true, it's not the same chord, it's just one that can make it play again. It's about growing up, evolving and moving on.
Amidst everything else he also felt abandoned by Yuki and he finally faced it all during the song, he admitted he felt lonely, despite trying to deny it till the very beginning of the live, but getting it all out, he had space for everything else, the fog inside him dissipated and he saw everything else clearly, he saw everything he gained and made him happy. After getting it all out around him it was too bright and he couldn't see anything, he could barely hear himself but he turned around and Uenoyama was there, smiling at him. In that instant once again he really saw him. Not some abstract image of him, he saw him.
When he says he's not lonely then it's not because of denial anymore but because he has a lot, he sees it now. He just wants to see Yuki one more time because he's fine now, even without him, but he wants to say goodbye, to make amend, to say how he felt now he knew how to do it, and to understand Yuki too. It's not about finding a place for him in his "new" life, it's about coming to terms with the past. Talking to Hiiragi and telling him about his feelings for Uenoyama almost feels like asking permission to move on. For so long he had been afraid to confront him because of what happened but now he can even admit he's not stuck anymore.
I would also note a difference between Yuki and Uenoyama at this point. Yuki heard Mafuyu humming and started to write a song for him, Uenoyama heard him and gave him the song he couldn't write and let him use it to express himself. I'm not judging their different approach, born from different circumstances too, I'm just saying it seems nothing but it's a lot when put in context. It drove Yuki and Mafuyu apart but it brought Uenoyama and him together. Mafuyu is so scared because of what happened with Yuki that he thinks going after music for himself would inevitably break them up, but it's what brought them together in the first place and he's starting to understand that in the current chapters. Also, ignoring it because it scares him doesn't make the problem go away, which it's something he seemed to have learned before but it's not unusual to repeat the same mistakes over and over again, it helps us grow too.
Obviously it's not something that's fixed and done with because life is not like that. He's still learning to differentiate and he doesn't fully realize it, like with the clock, he looks for or maybe just notices easily the similarities and that's why he's so scared when he feels like history is repeating itself and he's losing Uenoyama. I do believe Mafuyu's feelings are genuine even if he may need to take a step back to fully comprehend them.
When he meets Ugetsu, who only wants to be understood, his feelings resonate with him he and wants to see Uenoyama because, even if he's not totally aware, he comforts him in that respect. He says that he wants to write a different song and in a way it's what happened already. The first song was about coming to terms with what happened, the second is about moving on. It's not random that Uenoyama feels him more distant while he works on that because Mafuyu is learning what he likes, because he's still trying to understand how to accept that the past is behind him, he does by connecting to the experience of others, that's why now he knows he can communicate what he feels he wants to reach others too, even help them.
He says it himself, he doesn't really want to do it, to leave the past behind, but it's impossible to stay put and as long as he has music, which by now it's become his voice but it's also what he (they) loves, he can still make it right. I think it's meaningful that in the panel with the line about going as far as we want there is him kissing Uenoyama.
He's not ready for the debut because he's not sure to jump fully into it yet, he still needs reassurance, still scared to lose to music. But also scared to lose music. He likes them both and he thinks he has to devote himself to only one. Because of his past he's still scared that any little thing could destroy everything he has found in one go. That fear is also deepened by how fast things are going and how everyone around him seems to have no doubt whatsoever but it's more his impression than the truth.
He's not totally wrong because to write the song, Uenoyama had to connect to Yuki so the situation really is similar in a way but the thing is he's just seeing a portion of the reality.
Mafuyu is one to think a lot about things so he wouldn't just date Uenoyama if he wasn't sure, him seeking advice from Kaji and Shizusumi and ultimately Ugetsu shows he's mature and is trying, he's not shutting down again. He just needed that final confrontation to make order in his thoughts.
He's scared to be left behind but also to move and realize he's gone in a different direction than everyone else, that whatever he does will be the wrong choice. As of now every live made him close a door on a phase of his life. Now that he and Uenoyama are more distant than ever he thinks this is the turning point but he doesn't want to leave anything else behind. Except with this song Uenoyama (and Hiiragi and Shizusumi) are not cutting him out. They're giving him something back.
Now, I've seen different translations of these last few lines but deep down the meaning stays the same and I think, no matter what happens after this, they truly show that Mafuyu is still seeing Uenoyama for who he is, he still loves him and not an idea of him, he's still scared to lose him. Feelings are never easy, especially coming out of a trauma, but this is a story about healing and finding a way in life. They're young and they're doing their best, none of their feelings is fake, they're just learning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
P.s. obviously Uenoyama is more than just kind, I know it, you know it and Mafuyu knows it too. I think it's just a way to show that he is seen and loved for who he is, not to reduce his whole personality to a single trait.

Uenoyama was such a character. It pains my heart whenever I reread the manga, and slowly realized that even though he was introduced as one of the main characters, he was just 'someone' to fix what Yuki broke when he left.
I fell in love with Ue in Given S1, the first few episodes. The temperamental guitarist. The kid who got obsessed with guitar, practice insane hours just to be able to play a cool rift. The Uenoyama before he knew about Yuki, before he crossed paths with Hiiragi. Just Uenoyama Ritsuka.
It's sad because despite having a very interesting character design, it's clear after reading the last volume, Ue, will always be Yuki's replacement.
Was it because his love was never selfish? The way he accepted Mafuyu's music in open arms. The way he healed Mafuyu from such a heartbreak, even helping Hiiragi and completed the music Yuki left for Mafuyu.
It hurts because it happened gradually. When I read the manga, I was hopeful. AkiHaru got their arc, which was my favorite. Akihiko was able to pursue his love: Haru, his violin and drums. Even Ugetsu got his closure.
But what about Ue? What about him doing his own music, his own stuff outside of Yuki's shadow? I didn’t realized he was going to be replacement permanently until I got to the last volume. Everyone had their own arc, everyone was able to heal the broken parts in them. Hiiragi got better treatment than him, the main character.
And then Uenoyama? He was just there to make things alright because apparently, he was the 'okay' one. The one who wasn't broken yet. It was so gradual, by the time I realized it was too late, there was nothing I could do but accept it. That was the sad part; accepting that my favorite character, one of the MC, was just a fucking replacement.
Seeing the spoilers for Given sequel, I'm still a clown and hope that somehow, Kizu will remember that Ue is his own character. But like before, pretty sure I'll be disappointed.
The spoilers showed that even after 10 years, Ue was still playing a support in Yuki's band. You know the worse part is? If you remove Ue and bring back Yuki in his place, nothing would change because Uenoyama Ritsuka was written as if Yuki was still alive but just in different body. Every fucking thing was for Yuki's traces not to fade. For Yuki's memory to always be there. For Yuki, and none for Ue.

Why do you think uenoyama deserves better /gen (no hating i just stumbled on your account)
well, because he is the only one trying for this relationship to work out, he is always there for mafuyu, he was there for him when he couldn't sing, he is always trying to be patient with him, encouraging him to be better and have confident in himself, trying to support him when he doesn't know mafuyu's past and be there for him, he is always for mafuyu but we never see mafuyu trying in the relationship (those panels don't exist in the manga), the only time ueno asked for something mafuyu completely ignored him and started to avoid him while ueno was trying to communicate with him and understand him and instead of going to uenoyama he goes to another person and the fact that he never told ueno anything about his past and uenoyama had to find out about it through hiiragi speaks everything, he could at least told him that something happen before but he wasn't ready to tell him but mafuyu doesn't even do that, he acts like he never cares or that he is supposedly in a relationship with someone, uenoyama is more of a caretaker than a boyfriend at this point because he is always giving to mafuyu but he never reciprocates or try for his new relationship, always trapped in the memory of yuki and his sadness or wandering in his own mind, so yeah uenoyama deserves better, we don't even have a lot of mafuyama panels in the manga acting like lovers but we have a lot mafuyuki, it's like Kizu doesn't want people to forget about yuki and see uenoyama as mafuyu's lover and I wouldn't have minded the mafuyuki scenes if she gave us a lot of scenes for mafuyama as lovers, the manga ended with a copy paste scene from mafuyuki because even at the end she didn't want the readers to forget that yuki was mafuyu's lover, people were comparing the two scenes instead of appreciating mafuyu "moving on" with ueno, and that doesn't address the fact that she never gave uenoyama a storyline while even the support cast got one but used him as a support character for everyone and a therapist for mafuyu and his friends, she used ueno in the last arc to highligh yuki as a "fascinating person" instead of highlighting ueno, she centered the supposed mafuyama arc in a mafuyuki arc again, it's like she rewrote the first arc again but changed the fonts because she didn't want to write uenoyama or give him the spotlight, this is why we got a lot of traumaporn readers that like yuki more, she always manages to center ueno's storylines around yuki, even when the readers got in the page that he was feeling the shadow of that man and feeling insecure the given fandom acted obtuse and was calling him names because mafuyu was sad and kizu instead of developing that she went back about how yuki is this great person on a pedestal, it's like she doesn't want people to root for ueno as a person or mafuyu's lover because she doesn't want ueno to overshadow yuki her favorite character.
I don't have a lot of expectations for the new series because the synopsis says it all, "I've traveled 3650 dawns to see you again." it's been ten years and we're still gonna have a yuki panel even, so we supposedly moved on for the third time again.

Hi, I would like Given headcanons please! I like to imagine Mafuyu having a little sister who’s about 5 yrs old (the mom adopted her when he was 11) and since she was a baby she saw Yuki, Hiiragi and Shizu as her other older brothers. Could you also include how what happened to Yuki affects her and her meeting Ritsuka please? (◕ヮ◕)
Mafuyu's little tresor
Mafuyu,Yuki, Hiiragi, Shizu x Platonic little sister reader / Comfort and a bit of angst / Headcanons
a/n : Thank you so much for your request! Honestly, I shed a tear when I mentioned Yuki, but I love the idea! I hope this post lives up to your expectations !
Tumblr media
The day you came into Mafuyu's life, he immediately adored you. You were the cutest thing he'd ever seen. And of course it wasn't long before he introduced you to his friends.
In fact, the week after you arrived in the Sato family, you were already surrounded by love. It wasn't unusual to see you together, playing in a playpen. But you spent most of your time with Mafuyu and Yuki, whether it was making little aeroplanes, playing hide-and-seek or playing jokes on Hiiragi or Shizu. You were inseparable.
Even though 'officially' you only had one older brother, Mafuyu, in reality you had 4. On one particular day, the weather was perfect for playing in the park. Shizu and Hiiragi were fighting over a toy while Yuki and Mafuyu sat on the grass, chatting. You were chasing a beautiful butterfly that refused to land on your hand when you tripped over a stone and fell heavily to the ground.
Your cries immediately attracted the attention of the 4 boys who, in a flash, ran to you. "Y/N, are you all right?" asked Yuki, coming up to you. "Of course not, you idiot, you can see she's crying!" shouted Hiiragi. Mafuyu got down on his knees in front of you, "Can you show me where you hurt yourself?", sobbing, your little trembling hand pointing to your knee. "We'll fix that at home," Mafuyu said, smiling.
You found yourself on Shizu's back, your crying having subsided. When you got home, Yuki took you in his arms and led you into the bathroom, sitting you down on the toilet. Shizu grabbed a cotton pad and some disinfectant while Mafuyu pulled up your trousers. Hiiragi made faces at you to stop you seeing your little wound, and your laughter filled the small room.
The 5 of you were really happy together. The years passed quietly, and one day you were surprised by something that was, to say the least, surprising. Yuki and Mafuyu… kissing?! That was the day you found out they were going out and even though Mafuyu was initially afraid of your reaction, you were overjoyed. Because it meant you'd be spending even more time with Yuki !
But your happiness didn't last forever.
From one day to the next, Yuki stopped coming to the house and your big brother spent most of his time locked up in his room. It was the year you turned 10 that you learned of Yuki's death. And no words are strong enough to describe what you felt. It was as if your heart was being ripped out, then put back in, then taken out, over and over again.
You didn't know how he died and, to be honest, you didn't even want to know. The last thing you had left of Yuki was a photo taken years ago, when you were children and still carefree. That photo never left your sight, not even at school.
And one evening, when your mother wasn't back yet, you needed Mafuyu. You knocked lightly on his door, but there was no answer. You decided to go in anyway. Mafuyu was sitting on the floor, staring into space. Without a word, you sat down beside him.
-" It hurts." You say, staring at an invisible spot. -" I know." You rested your head on your big brother's shoulder. He put his arm around your shoulders to pull you closer to him.
-"Will it ever get easier? -I don't know." The conversation is slow, but you've never needed words to understand each other.
Yuki's death took you out of the world of childhood much more quickly than expected. The world seemed less colourful, the sun less bright. The death of one of your older brothers was your first experience of death. And nothing seemed to be able to soothe your heart.
And a year later, you still couldn't accept it.
But after a year, you saw Mafuyu come home later than usual, his eyes a little less vacant than before. You're 11 years old, you're a child but life has turned you into an adult. You're happy to see life gradually returning to Mafuyu, perhaps because after a while it gets easier ?
So one day, when Mafuyu was still coming home quite late, you asked him.
-" How did you do it?" Mafuyu looked at you, confused. -What do you mean ?" Yuki's guitar was always with him.You approached the case gently.
-"How did you manage to get your taste for life back?" For a few seconds, Mafuyu said nothing, then he smiled at you, with that smile that always managed to bring yours back.
-"I'll show you tomorrow, okay?" You nodded.
The next evening arrived. You were in your room when you heard the front door close, Mafuyu's voice reaching you as well as that of a stranger. When you reached the entrance, a young man with black hair looked at you, surprised.
-"He's called Ritsuka, he's a friend from high school." Mafuyu said. -"Hello!" said the man called Ritsuka.
You waved your hand at him, confused.
-"Your name's Y/N, isn't it? Mafuyu's told me a lot about you. -Yes, that's me." Still a bit confused, you don't really know what to say.
-"Ritsuka's teaching me to play guitar, he's got a band!" Said Mafuyu, a hint of excitement in his voice. -Really? That's cool!" You say, slightly less embarrassed.
That evening, you didn't get much more out of Ritsuka, but you were pleased to see that Mafuyu seemed so happy to be learning to play the guitar. You felt a twinge of sadness at the thought of how happy Yuki would have been to see Mafuyu play. It's just… strange to see your big brother have a friend again, to see him get some colour.
And the weeks passed, slowly. Until one day Mafuyu came to see you in your room, to have a serious talk.
-"I've joined Ritsuka's group. We're having a concert next Sunday, please come." There was a lot of information to digest all at once.
First your brother joined a band, then he was going to perform in front of people and then he wanted you to come.
-"Are you sure ?" You say. -"You know, I believe that music saved me in some ways. I have so many things in me that I can't say or simply express. I'm not good with words but playing made it possible to bring out things that I thought I had locked away inside me forever. I would like you to find your outlet too." Mafuyu said, looking you straight in the eyes. -"Okay, I'll come." And the smile Mafuyu gave you was a smile you hadn't seen in 2 years.
Night of the concert
You were lost in the mass of people at the entrance. There were really a lot of people.
-“Y/N?!” This voice… Hiiragi! You turned around abruptly, meeting the gaze of an older brother you hadn't seen in a long time. Without thinking another second, you ran into his arms, bumping into a few people in the process, tears ready to fall at any moment.
-"I missed you so much…" You say, face buried in his chest, his arms instantly closing around you. -"I missed you a lot too, little sister.." And you couldn't hold back your tears any longer. “Look who’s here too.” You turned your face slightly to meet Shizu's eyes.
You hugged your two big brothers tightly, letting silent tears fall down your cheeks.
-"What are you doing here ?" You say, trying to dry your tears. -"We came to see Mafuyu sing." Shizu replied, still keeping you in his arms. “Stay close to us, there are a lot of people here.” He said with a smile. -"Of course, I won't let you go."
Finding yourself in the concert hall, you climbed on Shizu's shoulders so you could see something, like when you were kids.
youtube
(please go see the concert, I always cry and it breaks my heart but it's so powerful)
When Mafuyu's voice rang out, it was as if your heart had just stopped because you knew, you knew who he was talking about.
Images of Yuki, Mafuyu and you come back to you, the moments when you laughed, when you slept together, when Yuki took you in his arms because you were too tired to walk home.
You miss him, you miss him so much that you barely notice the tears running down your cheeks, all you see is Mafuyu.
And Yuki.
But Yuki is no longer here, he will never be here again.
So we must move forward and live, live so that he never fades.
You found your outlet.
A year later
-"Give it to me !" You shouted at Ritsuka who was holding up a bag of candy that you wanted.
Mafuyu and Ritsuka's laughter echoed through the apartment. Another year had passed. A year where you learned to live again, little by little. You saw your big brother fall in love with someone else and it would be a lie to say that it was simple at first. You felt like you were betraying Yuki by thinking that you were happy for Mafuyu and Ritsuka.
You often looked at this photo of the 5 of you as children. But as the seasons pass, sadness takes up less and less space in your heart.
The sun seemed to be shining again.
Tumblr media
Hey I'm really sorry for adding passages but I was very inspired haha, if you don't like it I can do it again for you 100% without any problem, I was very happy to write that even if review the concert made me cry haha. Thank you very much again for your request!
See you <3

Please Don't Go ('I Would Never' Ending)
kai again!!!! this picks up exactly where the main story left off so if you havent read that yet please do!!! same warnings apply.
Mizuki never was one to just… blindly obey. It had gotten her in trouble countless times. she would much rather get in trouble again. She was supposed to be an angel, how could she turn a blind eye to someone's suffering? someone's untimely demise? So once Yuki had closed his eyes, she wrapped him up in her wings. She abandoned the lyrics to the song she was singing in favor of pleas.
If she could just influence one thing, just- just this. Maybe she'll feel less like a failure, or a bystander. He was so young, it was unfair. She holds him close to her, fervent in her wishes. "...Please… it's not his time. He can't go like this. I refuse to let him just become…. space debris..." she sniffles, tears falling over Yuki's form. Its hopeless. There's no way she could change his story, not on her own, and no one else was willing to help her either.
As Yuki's time draws to a close, Mizuki starts to feel different. She opens her eyes; her wings were changing color. Mizuki feels her heart break at first, but she understands. She squeezes Mafuyu's hand in hers. "Hey…you really are going to make it. Help is on the way." She's not sure if he can hear her, but she knows his heart is still beating.
She plucks one of her still white wings before it can change color with the rest, pressing it into his hands. "I will stay with you, until I am no more" she smiles. This was her price to pay; the only choice she had left. She watches their surroundings, silently listing off facts about space to pass the time. By time the spaceship comes into view, there's not much time left. Not for her or for Yuki.
She places a hand on his chest. "I'm going to give you the last of my life force… so that I won't break my promises." she hesitates for a moment. She's never really given her life to someone before. She didn't know what to expect. oh well. She focuses on her life force and Yuki's heartbeat, trying her best to imagine and merge them into one.
When Yuki wakes up, he's in a hospital, an oxygen mask attached firmly to his face. Where was he...? He slowly turns to look around. Seems like he might be in a space station? He can see Shiho in a different bed, though he seems to be asleep. Fuyu feels…. exhausted. He just wants to find out where he is. As he starts to see if there's a nurse nearby, he notices a white feather in his hand. He's not fully sure why but the sight of it makes him cry; his heart overflowing with joy.
'Thank you, for staying with me.' he thinks, hoping that somehow, Mizuki will hear it. if she's real, that is. Though Yuki has a feeling that the angel he met will always be a part of him.
(thank you for reading until the end! i take constructive criticism even if it takes me forever to read it. this was hard to write, emotionally, but i really enjoyed it. please like if you enjoyed. in this ending its implied that the ship was able to find yuki and then they went to a space hospital where they all got patched up! called this ending 'i would never' cuz a part of mizuki now permanently lives on inside of mafuyu, kinda like they got soul merged or smth idk i also physically couldnt finish it until i thought up a happier ending)

Tumblr media
@ kanade yoisaki
• she's not typically a flirty person as you can see..
• but, on the contrary, if she were to be flirty, she'd be a little more teasing
• either that, of if you're actually with her, then she'll literally go up to you and cuddle you out of no where
• she may ask mizuki tips on how to be flirty if she really felt the need to
• either then that she tries ok.
Tumblr media
@ mafuyu asahina
• like kanade, she's not much of a flirty type.
• i mean, she could give it a try if you wanted her to- or if her fellow group members brought it up
• if she was trying to be flirty, she'd send those flirty text message things
• @ yuki: [name], are you fire? because when i go near you, i feep my face getting hotter.
• after that she never did anything like that. EVER
• other then that she'd probably just chill out with you more, and lay her head in your lap
Tumblr media
@ ena shinonome
• like her brother, she can be flirty if she really wanted to
• if she's not occupied with her art, she'll hug you from behind and chuckle with a smug look on her face
• akito saw you guys like that and literally groaned
• anywhoo-, she's mostly a physical-flirty person.
• she likes interlocking your pinkies together, and kisses your hands a lot
• she's only flirty behind closed doors, since she doesn't want to get teased about anything- and she'll feel more relaxed.
Tumblr media
@ mizuki akiyama
• they're like a mix of physical-flirtiness, and being verbally flirty.
• one moment they're rambling about how your the best partner they could have ever asked for-
• to literally beind attached to your waist like a koala to a tree.
• they like to kiss your nose a lot- specifically if they're feeling really generous.
• in public though?- they're almost the same as if they were with you in private.
• except for the fact that they're a little less touchy, and whispers compliments in your ear lovingly, while twirling your hair.

Thoughts on the final Given chapter
I got my copy of Cheri+ so these are just some thoughts after using my basic Japanese and piecing together the panels with Keru's wonderful twitter translation.
Tumblr media
-- SPOILERS AHEAD --
I was hoping for a cover illustration of Mafuyu AND Ue together but I'm okay with solo Mafuyu too. This was ultimately the story of his grief, discovery, and growth, so to see him smiling at the end of it all is so beautiful. He's surrounded by cherry blossoms, which symbolize change and a new season, and is set against the ocean, which holds special meaning in both of his relationships. I cry.
The fold out poster (pictured above) is so cool!! I really want to cut it out of the magazine and display it somewhere but I'm afraid I'll mess it up...
Given debuted, rejoice!
It's really nice that Kasai wasn't just cast aside as "that jealous girl" competing with Mafuyu for Ue (although she never stood a chance lol) and grew to become kind of a confidant and supporter for him. They may not fully understand each other, but they share a mutual respect and provide little bits of unexpected encouragement for each other and it's so wholesome.
Hiiragi being a menace but also sparkly, usual stuff. It's so funny because Hiiragi and Ue don't get along on the surface (two ore-sama types am I right), but they totally jive as artists, which is why Ue will continue playing support - and "ONLY SUPPORT" says a very bitter Mafuyu - for SYH.
I'm surprised at how little Haruki and Akihiko showed up in the chapter, but we did get crumbs that Haruki is apartment hunting~ They are so stable, just get married already.
When Keru initially tweeted that a significant portion of the chapter covers something she was hoping would happen but wasn't sure if it would, my mind immediately went to the gutter and assumed it was RitsuMafu sex lolol. It wasn't just me, right???
Anyways, they went to the BEACH. Mafuyu has gone to the beach with Yuki, but they went during the biting cold of winter and weren't "officially dating" so they didn't really do date-y stuff. His experience with Ue was totally different. There's several pages of them just eating and having fun, and they look like they can't get enough of each other.
Ugetsu calling Mafuyu out of the blue to thank him for the CD was really sweet. When I initially watched and read the series up to the end of the AkiHaru arc, I wasn't too big on Ugetsu and I actually thought that he was romantically interested in Mafuyu and would stir things up or cause trouble. Clearly I was wrong, and I'm glad. Their friendship is so valuable for both of them as two musical geniuses who are a bit socially awkward, and they've taken turns being there for the other when they needed a push, whether it was to say goodbye to an unhealthy relationship or to take a step towards love and music.
Ugetsu's wish to Mafuyu back when Yoru ga Akeru was in the works - about hoping that despite everything that's happened between him and Akihiko, if at least the music could remain - ends up being the driving point of this chapter and the end of the series. Mafuyu tells Ugetsu that he believes that Ugetsu remains in music, and so does Yuki, even if he can never see him again. When Ue comes back and kisses Mafuyu before offering him a drink, Mafuyu muses that someday, he'll probably forget this moment too, and that's why he wants to keep making music. It ties back to his last time at the beach with Yuki, because Yuki insisted that Mafuyu would eventually forget that day, but now with Fuyu no Hanashi and Umi e, these moments are able to live on.
The kiss had me squealing! It's nothing big or grand, but Ue is kneeling and he looks up at Mafuyu for a moment before going in for the kiss. This is such huge growth for Ue~ Their first kiss was a result of his overwhelming emotions after the live, and he didn't even remember it later! When they shared the classroom kiss after their fight, Ue wanted to take initiative but got shy and so it was ultimately Mafuyu who made the move. Now Ue has kissed Mafuyu on his own, in public!!! and with full intent and absolute love and affection. When he pulls away, the look in his eyes is like Mafuyu is the most amazing being in the world and he can't believe he's his. Ughhhhhh.
There is a full blank page of just text that says, "If only everything could stay like this forever." This is what Mafuyu is thinking as they ride the train back from the beach. I found it a weird thought to highlight because obviously, things WILL and SHOULD change.
As they get up to leave the train, Mafuyu (blushing slightly) calls out to Ue and says, "When we get back, should we do it?" to which Ue responds with "EHHHHHHHH?!" A little unexpected as the final panel of the final chapter but it's a nice callback to when Yuki asked Mafuyu the same question. MAH BOY UE IS FINALLY GRADUATING! I knew Mafuyu was going to have to take the lead, hehe.
MINOR GRIPES AND FINAL THOUGHTS
I've had two months to deal with the series ending and I had already tempered my expectations knowing the ending was going to be rushed, so honestly as long as Kizu-sensei didn't like, spontaneously kill off a character or break up a couple, I was pretty okay with anything the chapter was going to give us. I do still have some some gripes and things I just wish had been explored more.
My biggest complaint is in regards to the treatment of Ue as an individual and his relationship with Mafuyu. If we recall, Given actually starts off from Ue's point of view. He had been in a musical slump until Mafuyu came along and rocked his world. He had to come to terms with his unfamiliar feelings, and then he also had to deal with the fact that he knows almost nothing about the boy he likes. Even after they started dating, Mafuyu really didn't share anything about Yuki with him, so whatever he knew was very vague and second-hand knowledge. THEN in addition to that, he's tasked with finishing the demo of a piece that Yuki had obviously intended as a love song for Mafuyu. And ironically, he works on this song at the expense of his relationship with Mafuyu. He had brief moments of vulnerability, once when Aki called him out for his feelings toward Mafuyu (this is one of my favorite scenes in the anime), and again when Mafuyu rejected his invitation to SYH's debut concert. But then we never really see him working through these complicated feelings. My boy's been through so much and he is strong, but I wanted to see more growth and development from him. After all, he's just a teenage boy who fell in love for the first time and is trying to balance that with music, school, a part-time job, etc.
As for Ue and Mafuyu as a couple, they are my endgame, my OTP, so while I enjoy the arcs that focus on AkiHaru and ShizuRagi, I was never as invested in them. I was okay reading 20+ chapters of them because I always assumed that the series would circle back around to have a final arc focused on Ue and Mafuyu. I also found the resolution to their problems in the hiiragi_mix arc to be very rushed. They had MAJOR communication issues, which is completely understandable for two young guys. Ue was trying so hard to finish the song as a gift for Mafuyu, but Mafuyu pulled away because he saw a repeat of what happened with Yuki coming again and got scared. The root of the issue is that they've never talked about Mafuyu's relationship with Yuki and Yuki's death.
At SYH's debut live, Mafuyu hears Umi e, instantly recognizes that the song came from Yuki, and then is so moved and inspired that he basically proposes to Ue that he wants to make music with him for the rest of his life. And then the final chapter just cuts forward after this declaration to Given debuting. This resolution is too fast and unrealistic. I would have preferred at LEAST one whole long chapter dedicated to Ue and Mafuyu after the live debriefing and talking. In an even more ideal world, they would have also done it after the talking. I never expected anything explicit but I would have at least liked to see the lead up, because it would have been the truest form of intimacy they could share, and Ue coming to terms with his sexuality and what exactly he wanted to "do to Mafuyu" was such a big part of the series early on.
Regardless, Kizu-sensei wrapped everything up nicely, brought back every character for at least a cameo, and ended things on a happy, meaningful note. I've seen that many people are unsatisfied with it but I mean, I watched Game of Thrones, so I know a bad ending and this was just fine. Although I didn't get everything on my Given wish list, I am glad that I got to see the end. I prefer that over it getting cancelled at some point for whatever reason and being left unfinished. And we still have more to look forward to! I'll be hoping for some extra manga content with the volume 9 release and waiting to hear Umi e in the anime.
Just like Mafuyu says, Given and the music will remain with us. It touched my heart and will always have a special place there. Thank you for everything, Given!

What Gives Her Warmth
Characters: Mafuyu Asahina/Ena Shinonome/Mizuki Akiyama/Kanade Yoisaki (plus very brief Mizuki Akiyama/Rui Kamishiro mention)
Fandom: Project Sekai Colourful Stage, Ft. Hatsune Miku
Synopsis: Nightcord has a sleepover and movie night
No warnings
Word count: 1,093

-
Mafuyu checked her phone. It was almost time for Ena to come pick her up. She sat in her front room with her bag, eyes fixated on her phone. Ignoring her mother’s gaze seemingly burning a hole in her. Finally, her mother broke the silence.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay Mafuyu?” her mother asked.
“I’ll be fine, mom,” Mafuyu said flatly. “You’ve met Ena before.”
“Well, yes, but I don’t like the thought of you going for a sleepover.”
“It’s going to be fine.”
“You should be focusing on your studies...”
“One night with a friend isn’t going to hurt... I’ve done it once before...”
Mafuyu’s mom sighed. “I suppose you’re right. When is your friend getting here again?”
“Soon,” Mafuyu said simply, looking back at her phone. 6:56. Ena said she’d be there to pick Mafuyu up around 7...
Just then, Mafuyu got a text. ‘Hey, Yuki! Here’
“She’s here,” Mafuyu said, standing up and grabbing her bag. “I’ll see you tomorrow, mom.”
“Text me when you get to her house,” Mafuyu’s mom said, standing up alongside her. “And when you’re leaving tomorrow.”
“Sure.” Mafuyu moved to leave, but her mom grabbed her, hugging her. After a moment, her mother let her go, and Mafuyu hurried out the door. “Annoying...”
“Hey! Mafuyu!” Ena called to her, waving.
“Hey, Ena,” Mafuyu greeted. “Sorry it took me a minute getting out.”
“Eh? It didn’t take that long,” Ena said.
“Mom held me up.”
“Of course she did. I’m surprised she even agreed to a sleepover in the first place.” The two of them started walking together, off in the direction of where Kanade had told them her house was. “She doesn’t like to let you out much, huh?”
“I just said it would be with you,” Mafuyu said. “If I mentioned Kanade and Mizuki she probably would’ve flipped and said no.”
“Ah, true,” Ena said. “Well, a little lie like that never hurt!”
“Mmm. As long as she doesn’t find out.”
“Oh, come on, Mafuyu.” Ena took Mafuyu’s hand in her own, intertwining their fingers together. “It’ll be fine. Even if she does find out... we’ll figure out something.”
“Yeah... True.”
The rest of the walk went pretty uneventful. They didn’t say much, simply held hands as they walked. As they started getting closer, Ena pulled out her phone to double check the address.
“Oh, Mizuki’s already there,” Ena commented.
“They are?” Mafuyu asked. “I thought they said they’d be late.”
“Guess their date with Kamishiro ended early,” Ena said. “We can ask them when we get there. Uhh, it’s really close, I think.”
“Here, let me see.” Mafuyu leaned over to peer at Ena’s phone. “Mmm, should be right around this corner.”
“Ay! Mafuyu! Ena!” The two looked up and saw Mizuki waving at them, with Kanade standing next to them. “Took you guys long enough!”
“You’re just here early!” Ena said with a laugh.
Mafuyu and Ena walked over to them, with Ena leaning to give Mizuki a kiss on their cheek. Kanade gave Mafuyu a hug, reaching her hand over to hold Mafuyu’s free hand. Mafuyu leaned down slightly to give Kanade a light kiss on the head.
“I’m glad your mom said you could come,” Kanade said softly.
“What’d you tell her to let you?” Mizuki asked, draping their arm across Ena’s shoulder.
“Ah, just a small lie,” Mafuyu said. “Didn’t tell her that you or Kanade would be here. Just Ena.”
“Lying, nice,” Mizuki said with a wink.
“Don’t encourage too much lying,” Ena said, nudging Mizuki.
“What? Her mom sucks!” Mizuki protested. “Lying to her is fine!”
Ena rolled her eyes. “Not if Mafuyu gets caught and in trouble!”
“Ah, she won’t get caught!” Mizuki said. “It’s fine!”
“It is fine,” Mafuyu agreed. “I’m fine with lying if it means I get to spend time with you guys.”
“Aww...” Kanade murmured, looking up at her.
“Gayyy!” Mizuki giggled.
“Says you,” Ena laughed. “Now come on, guys, it’s starting to get cold. Let’s head inside and watch a movie or something!”
“We should watch a horror movie!” Mizuki said.
“Horror...” Kanade shuddered slightly.
“You don’t even like horror that much,” Ena pointed out.
“Yeah, but it’ll give me a reason to cuddle you guys if we’re all scared from the movie,” Mizuki laughed, giving Ena a quick kiss.
“Of course.”
The group headed into Kanade’s house. They quickly got settled down in her front room, in front of the TV. Mafuyu sat in the center of the couch, setting her bag down to the side, and Kanade sat down next to her. Mizuki laid down across their laps while Ena looked through the selection of movies. After a brief discussion, a movie had been chosen, and Ena sat on Mafuyu’s other side (after some protests of Mizuki having to move). Finally, they were all settled.
“Ready?” Ena asked, holding up the remote.
“Yup!” Mizuki said.
“Mhm,” Kanade mumbled. Mafuyu just nodded.
“Aaaand start!”
The movie started out quiet, though soon they all got to pointing out things. Mafuyu pointed out most everything that didn’t make sense in the movie, while Ena kept saying why it made sense, and Mizuki just kept pointing out random details they saw. Mostly in the character outfits. The only one who wasn’t talking was Kanade.
Mafuyu soon discovered it was because Kanade had fallen asleep on her shoulder. Once they realised that, the three awake Nightcord members quieted down a fair bit, to allow Kanade to sleep. Mafuyu reached her hand around Kanade’s shoulder to pull her closer and run her hand through the sleeping girl’s long hair.
They continued to watch the movie, occasionally discussing whatever random things any of them pointed out. Mafuyu pointed out a plot hole, which ended in the movie getting paused and a rather lengthy discussion about the plot and said plot hole, before they unpaused.
Finally, the movie was over. Mafuyu was silent as she glanced to Ena and Mizuki, both of whom had also fallen asleep during the movie. Ena was leaning on Mafuyu’s other arm, while Mizuki had propped their arms up in Kanade’s lap and was curled up oddly similar to how a cat would be. Mafuyu wrapped her other arm around Ena to pull her closer, and lowered her hand that was formerly running through Kanade’s hair to rest on Mizuki’s head, before she closed her eyes and leaned her head back against the couch.
As she fell asleep, she felt a small warmth in her chest.
I love them dearly.

Since you seem to be pumping out the content, don't mind me asking for some! Could we please have some best friend Ena headcanons about her being a wingman for the reader?? Maybe she's the first one that notices they have a crush (the target doesn't matter but extra points if it's a niigo member!) And they keep the secret and help them along?? Please and TYSM!!
OH HECK YEA this is cute!! I hope you like this!! <3
♡ WINGMAN - Ena Shinonome (+ a Niigo Member) and Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ena often drags you around to take pictures for her social media. You at least get to eat some nice deserts with her though!
Since you're her best friend, she trusts you and often lets you sit with her as she draws. She appreciates your presence a lot
It was during these drawing sessions that you met Niigo. She was a bit embarrassed introducing you, but you had fun talking to the other three!
...What she wasn't expecting was you growing a crush on one of her group members-
If the person you have a crush on is Kanade, she'll just raise a brow at you. "...She never leaves her house, is she really the one you like?-"
She'll help you bond with Kanade though, and helps you with some composing facts so that you can talk with her on composing!
If the person you have a crush on is Mafuyu, she'll stare at you with barely hidden horror. "...Seriously? Yuki? Out of the three of them you like Yuki??"
She...Doesn't really know what Mafuyu likes, so the best she can do is set you up with her to hang out- As much as she fights with Mafuyu, she hopes that you two get together!
If the person you have a crush on is Mizuki, she'll just roll her eyes. "C'mon, I know you can do better than them-" She's only slightly joking. Slightly.
She does know that Mizuki loves fashion, so she'll send you out on the shopping trips that she usually goes on with them!

GIVEN MIX_21 - LAST CHAPTER
Tumblr media
Yes, Mafuyu, because now you don't need to fear so much losing things, people, memories
Ritsuka gave you the one thing Yuki never could: a solid base
A way to keep a bond with everything else, even when things change and people go
Ritsuka let you in the world of music in a sincere, kind, and selfless way
He gave you something to keep everything together, something tangible, something eternal
Something that will not make fear go away, but that can give you courage even in fearful times
Things will change, people too, but one thing will remain: music, and with it, memories.

Hello! I hope your having a nice day. I was thinking abt this and I thought that you could give me some insight. What do you think Yuki's and Shizu's relationship was like? We know that him and Hiragi got along very well. As Hiragi admired him. But it seems to me that in that chapter (I don't remember the # sorry!) Were Mafuyu asks Shizu advice for music and his relationship abt Ritsuka. That when Shizu gets WAY of topic and says that the group was super Yuki-centered and how that was irritating. It seems to me that maybe he didn't like how much everyone revolved around him and admired him? As if it irritates him? Idk we don't really have much insight from him what his relationship with Yuki was like. So we might not be ae to tell for sure.
Hello friend! Thank you! Hope you are having a good one too! I'd like to point you towards this meta of mine, Discovering the true intention behind Shizu’s actions in Mix_8 completely changed how I saw the Shizuragi ship! This meta, although it doesn't address your question directly, I think it clears a lot of things up so PLEASE READ before proceeding.
Shizu and Yuki's relationship explained
In my opinion, Kizu never fully goes into the details of the dynamics between Shizu and Yuki but out of everyone, Shizu felt least close to Yuki compared to Mafuyu and Hiiragi. Shizu feels like
Yuki adopted the abandoned Pomeranian and calico cat and he's just tagging along. But Shizu feels like he doesn't belong to the squad/isn't as close to Yuki is his own doing due to:
his own abandonment issues resultant from being a LITERAL foster child
him joining the childhood squad later than the rest of the three
thinking that his three friends as being better than him from birth.
Tumblr media
In mix_9, Kizu's placement of Yuki, Mafuyu and Hiiragi on stage is literally so telling of how Shizu felt. Of course he could choose to be on that stage as well, but he needs help to make he feel like he is worthy of being on stage.
Hiiragi is amazing, because Hiiragi noticed that Shizu needed help, Hiiragi had always been leading Shizu ever since he was a little kid. Hiiragi is absolutely that kid who is annoying but makes everyone feel included. And Shizu, is so happy and appreciative of that
to the point of feeling possessive over Hiiragi.
Sometimes, people with abandonment wounds feel possessive and jealous easily. This is because they are always scared that everything good can disappear at any moment. It may result in a person feeling super clingy emotionally. In Shizu's case, he is outwardly nonchalant but inwardly super clingy. Shizu, at some point in his childhood started to romantically idolise Hiiragi.
Tumblr media
SO, Shizu's felt irritated towards Yuki because Hiiragi idolised Yuki.
BUT, Shizu's own abandonment wounds clouded his judgement because he mistook Hiiragi's idolisation of Yuki as a romantic one instead of a paternal one. Shizu mistook Hiiragi as being in love with Yuki when Hiiragi actually put Yuki on a pedestal like a child admiring a fatherly figure.
Yuki I think for the most part didn't do anything objectively irritating to make Shizu dislike him. Neither did the squad, they were always hanging out together. Shizu's inferiority complex and attachment towards Hiiragi made him look for someone contrasting his own circumstances to blame, which was Yuki.
Yuki - most panels depict him as the popular kid
Shizu - the literal foster child
Yuki - has both Mafuyu and Hiiragi's attention
Shizu - feels like he has none, but in truth Hiiragi is quite observant of Shizu's hesitation in participating fun things to make an effort to include him.
It's basically like the song Heather by Conan Gray.
Because Shizu also saw Yuki as being better than him in the literal sense, this actually didn't allow Shizu to really understand Yuki as a multi-faceted person. I think Shizu for the most part just accepted Yuki as someone with better circumstances than him, even beyond death. BUT AGAIN, that doesn't make Shizu a bad person. It makes him a human one. On top of that, Shizu's abandonment wounds were exacerbated when Hiiragi continued to emotionally dump on him whenever he wanted to but look towards Yuki for motivation and inspiration. And those are pretty VALID feelings which needed to be communicated and addressed for healthy healing, which they were in mix_4 to Mafuyu and mix_8 to Hiiragi. As you pointed out, Shizu gets off topic with Mafuyu, this is a great thing because for once, he is acknowledging his own feelings outwardly rather than keeping them inside. This then led him to realise that he needed to clarify things with Hiiragi rather than let these feelings of abandonment brew longer.
Currently, I personally think he is no longer irritated at Yuki. Please remember that Shizu also lost Yuki. Grief for him could have also manifested as irritation. It’s all very complicated when you lose someone right? I think Shizu’s probably found the new song “To the Sea” just as healing as Hiiragi and Mafuyu, he’s just not really the outwardly expressive type. But Kizu Natsuki did put in some tender faces in the recent chapters.
Tumblr media
Again, please read Discovering the true intention behind Shizu’s actions in Mix_8 completely changed how I saw the Shizuragi ship! (sorry for pasting again, it's just so important, I go into Shizu's insight so much more here).
As for Yuki, we never really get to have an insight into how Yuki feels about anyone, because he's passed away. We are only ever receiving second hand accounts of Yuki. But Kizu wrote it that way to highlight the fact that life is precious and if you're alive,
there is hope for you to tell your story and communicate clearly.
