Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls 2/16, There's The Rub, The Part Where Dean Shows Up And Ruins Everything, Part 5
Read parts 1-4 and all other episodes in my pinned post.
This one may not come across as terribly funny; I felt the urge to continue with this episode but I also felt a bit off my humor game, probably because it's 8,000 fucking degrees outside. Maybe that's what's draining my funny juices. But it does contain a bonus surprise (something I've never done before), so read on.
Where we last left off, we were moments away from armageddon as Dean was heading over to the Gilmore house, with his fucking pint of ice cream in a bag, ignoring Rory's wishes to be left alone because consent has never been his forte, hell bent on destroying this evening of blissful harmony being shared between Jess, Rory, and Paris.
Rory has just checked the Butthead News and Weather report and learned that a Level 5 DeanStorm is bearing down on the Gilly Girls house. She immediately shifts into panic mode as she tries to evacuate everyone from the house.

God, I'm ashamed to admit how long it took me to notice this was actualy a clever ploy to get Rory alone in her room. Clever baby.
I thought Jess was saying he wants to sit down and have a heart to heart talk with Rory, then I realized he actually meant Dean and that is way funnier. I love the absurd image of those two idiots working together to achieve mature conflict resolution. Totally bonkers concept.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Dean and Jess would just fucking make out with each other there would be peace in Stars Hollow. Rory would be spared, Lindsey would be spared, Lorelai would watch her dreams of marrying Dean Forrester wither on the vine, Shane would still be alive and not murdered by Jess after the dance marathon...
Milos "tiny little ice cream package" line delivery in the following scene is so fucking adorable that I went ahead and made it into a video clip. I should start doing this more often tbh.
I don't know how Jess is always so fearless around Dean, if I were Jess I'd be pissing my fucking pants. Dean fucking terrifies me.
Shit.
Is the cold fear that this fictional character instills in me on a regular basis a testament to Jared Padalecki's acting or what? I mean, I hope it's just acting. It's a little too convincing.
He is one scary motherfucker.
Poor Paris.
Dean is so horrible to Rory in the next scene, like he is just getting more and more abusive towards Rory as time goes on. So you know what, I'm not even going to write about it. Fuck Dean Forrester.
Paris jumps to Rory's defense and makes up an excuse to calm Dean down from his jealous rage and it works. I wish I just could give the both of them (Paris and Rory) a great big hug. Paris is a hero and her love for Rory knows no bounds.
You are not. Fuck you!

Starting to get updates now about my broadcast shows left to cancel or renew. Sadly Milo Ventimiglia's show "The Company You Keep" got cancelled on ABC. I had a feeling it was coming but I was watching and sad it won't be back. Then the fate of "Young Rock" will be decided by NBC later this month but that's also likely cancelled as that's when the cast/crew's contracts end and normally if those end that's an automatic cancellation. I'm fine with it though as the s3 ending worked as a series finale. Then at The CW supposed they might only keep 1 DC show so it'll either be "Superman and Lois" or "Gotham Knights" and I watch both so preparing either way. It'll also be harder for any show to find a new home during this writers strike too as they can't make new deals till after it's over. Then Hilary Swank's show also got cancelled at ABC but that actually frees her up to be on "Cobra Kai"s final season as they'll go back to filming once the strike is done so that might work out for the better.

JUST A LITTLE CRUISE LOVIN’- Sequel to ‘The Valleys of New Orleans and Midnight Train to Memphis’
Excerpt:
Denny:
“It’s not too late to turn back.” I say as we stare at the cruise ship. Jess looks at me. Even through his sunglasses, I can see his frail attempts to hide his discomfort. After all, we were going to be on shore for a week, with hundreds of people on board, sappy entertainment, no cell reception, stopping in destinations for less than a day. And the icing on the unsavoury cake? The morning call every 9 am- where I’m subjected to waking up to a cheery voice detailing the type of waters, temperature and other useless details. Or the probability of sea-sickness. I just don’t know which ones worse until I’ve experienced it.
I adjust my messenger back, and Jess toys with his duffle. He shrugs, “I mean it’s not like we’re stuck with something we’re avoiding, like a crush or Taylor.”
I giggle. At least, Jess was holding it in. For my sake. Because I’d rather do this with him over anybody else.
We climb onboard the cruise and check in. we’re given pass-cards complete with a picture on it and details of our suite type. A porter takes us to an elevator, one of six glossy ones, complete with transparent glass and ornate furnishing. I marvel at the deck room complete with armchairs and ballroom style floors as we’re whisked to the 11th floor. The porter directs us to our suite and opens the door.
I try but fail to hold back my gasp of pleasant shock. It’s like a small flat on its own with a small balcony and the ensuite bathroom tucked on the right. I immediately enter the balcony, and marvel at the pristine waters of the sea and the outdoor deck on the other side along with the pool.
Jess tips the porter and pulls in the bags. He sits on the bed and I ask him, “Well, thank God we got an upper-level suite.”
“I think key word would be lucky.”
An hour later, after having packed our luggage, we aim to eat something. After a little bit of navigating, we end up on the outer deck near the buffet. I go for the burger and fries and Jess grabs a little bit of the Italian from the live counters. We take a seat on the pool chairs and eat our lunch in silence. For a while, I’m taken aback at the sheer calmness of the atmosphere. It’s like I’m transported to the 70’s. I ask him, “You know... we don’t anyone here. We could just... stay in our rooms and you write while I... do something. We’ll be alright, don’t you think?”
Jess looks up and shrugs. “I guess.”
“You’re sure you’re going to be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. The worst would be being stuck here on this ship with Rory and Logan right now sucking face or something.”
I look softly at him. it’s clear that Rory really did a number on him. and then I see something. Or someone. I crane my neck and squint to take a closer look.
And I think I’m going to suffer a aneurysm.
Cause Rory is here.
On this ship.
“Uh, Jess. Want to go take a walk? Get out of here?”
“What? Why?”
“Because I’m trying to delay my death from jumping off this ship by a few hours.”
Jess shakes his head, confused. “What are you talking about?”
I decide to stall. Which is stupid.
“You know how you shouldn’t say Bloody Mary in front of a mirror 3 times? Or the Candyman? Or... uh-”
“Out with it Denny.”
“Rory’s on this ship.”
“WHAT???”
I’m officially dead.
And then I’m officially cremated when I notice who’s sitting opposite her. I can see the back of his head. But I’d recognize those shoulders anywhere. How could I forget that those were the only things that were anchoring me while I kissed him on a whim after the best blind date that I ever had?
It’s Jamie.
My Bid-a-Basket date.
I think we’re safe to say this is going to be a nightmare over 500 stretch of wide European sea.

Reckoning with the long shadow of TV dads on Fathers Day
As a longtime TV critic, I have written a lot of pieces about dads and television for Fathers Day. Some of them have felt a bit contrived, like this piece on TVs Dumb Dads, which is an evergreen subject; television loves taking characters who actually have the most agency and power in society and making them look vulnerable for storytelling purposes.
But TV’s relationship to the subject of fatherhood and parenting is far more complex. I’m much prouder of this piece I did five years ago on how I mostly learned about being a father from watching characters on film, TV and theater.
A sample: “My own father isn't with us anymore, and I loved him a lot. But he and my mother split before I was born, and during my formative years, it was mostly me and Mom against the world. Any sense of what it might feel like to have a father close by came from the first sitcom with a father who felt like he could live in my world: James Evans on Good Times. These days, when TV shows like Black-ish and Queen Sugar offer lots of different takes on black family and fatherhood, it might be tough to imagine how rare and important it was for a young black kid to see Good Times in 1974.”

After raising four kids of my own, I’ve learned that fatherhood is such a big job, it’s tough to find one portrayal on the small screen that does it justice. In the real world, it’s a job defined by trying to provide everything your children require to have the best life possible. It means knowing when to encourage their passions, meet their needs and satisfy their desires and when to save them from their own excesses, inexperience, lack of judgment or impatience.
It means soaring when they succeed and feeling crushed when they fall short. It also means understanding that your own actions always serve as example and model – it’s up to you whether that conduct is something to emulate or avoid like a cautionary tale.
On the subject of fathering and TV, I also like an essay I wrote for IndieWire a few years ago; basically, a slightly different version of the piece I did for NPR. Here’s an abridged version of that essay below.

“For a long while, I thought most married couples were like Rob and Laura Petrie in “The Dick Van Dyke Show”; sleeping in two twin beds separated by a nightstand. So when I saw John Amos as James Evans Sr. on the legendary sitcom “Good Times,” I felt like I finally saw a dad who was something like the other fathers on my block, and something like the dad I could have had.
Yeah, he was often angry and threatened corporal punishment WAY too often for my tastes, especially back then. But he worked hard, loved and valued his kids, encouraged them to get educated and take advantage of every opportunity and wanted nothing more than for them to do far better than he ever would. It wasn’t just that James Evans was black; it was that he was a black man whose primary goal was taking care of his wife and kids.
All these years later, I’ve seen other TV dads who also taught me lessons.
John Goodman’s Dan Conner on “Roseanne” taught me how to make space for a strong wife and mom, but assert yourself when circumstances require.
Bill Bixby’s Tom Corbett on “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” taught me the power of a parent paying attention.
I like fathers who show that being a dad takes effort and intention, like Michael Rapaport’s Doug Gardner on Netflix’s “Atypical.”
And even though Milo Ventimiglia’s Jack Pearson is modern TV’s best dad on “This Is Us,” I identify a lot more with his adopted son, Sterling K. Brown’s Randall Pearson.
In the same way Randall, as a black man raised in a white family, had to learn what being black meant to him, I had to learn what being a father meant to and for me. In the same way he found and reconciled with his biological father shortly before his death, I reconciled mostly with my dad before he passed. And Randall has a goofy earnestness mixed with a capacity to work a little too hard on stuff that takes him outside the family, which I also – sadly — can relate to.
My four kids are mostly grown now. But seeing a dad on TV who still struggles, despite having had the best example of fatherhood in his life, means a lot. Even now.”

It'd be useless to talk about an IRL crush.
So general crushes (fictional or celebrity) it is.
My first ever crush was Dimitri, from the 1997 animation Anastasia. It was more of an attitude thing than a looks thing, but he definitely was somewhat of a starting point for my type.
Keanu Reeves (always) more specifically in Speed, as Jack Traven, as mentioned by @obsessivedaydreamer in her torture ask she sent me today. His entire energy in this movie really does it for me. Why I was allowed to watch this as a kid is beyond my comprehension, but little Nalu definitely drooled a little over this dude. Keanu Reeves, however, functions as a celebrity crush in general. He seems like a good dude and he's still hot.
