Book Recs: More Feline Reads
The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide
A couple in their thirties live in a small rented cottage in a quiet part of Tokyo; they work at home, freelance copy-editing; they no longer have very much to say to one another. But one day a cat invites itself into their small kitchen. It leaves, but the next day comes again, and then again and again. Soon they are buying treats for the cat and enjoying talks about the animal and all its little ways. Life suddenly seems to have more promise for the husband and wife - the days have more light and color. The novel brims with new small joys and many moments of staggering poetic beauty, but then something happens….
A bestseller in France and winner of Japan’s Kiyama Shohei Literary Award, The Guest Cat, by the acclaimed poet Takashi Hiraide, is a subtly moving and exceptionally beautiful novel about the transient nature of life and idiosyncratic but deeply felt ways of living.
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
Nana the cat is on a road trip. He is not sure where he's going or why, but it means that he gets to sit in the front seat of a silver van with his beloved owner, Satoru. Side by side, they cruise around Japan through the changing seasons, visiting Satoru's old friends. He meets Yoshimine, the brusque and unsentimental farmer for whom cats are just ratters; Sugi and Chikako, the warm-hearted couple who run a pet-friendly B&B; and Kosuke, the mournful husband whose cat-loving wife has just left him. There's even a very special dog who forces Nana to reassess his disdain for the canine species.
But what is the purpose of this road trip? And why is everyone so interested in Nana? Nana does not know and Satoru won't say. But when Nana finally works it out, his small heart will break...
Much Ado About Nauticaling by Gabby Allan
After far too many years in the Los Angeles corporate world, Whitney Dagner has come home to Santa Catalina Island off the California coast to help her brother Nick run Nautically Yours, the family tourism business. Between gift shop shifts selling all manner of T-shirts and tchotchkes and keeping her feline Whiskers in fine fettle, she pilots the Sea Bounder, a glass bottom boat showing tourists the underwater sights of aquatic plants, marine life - and a murder victim? The self-proclaimed Master of the Island, Jules Tisdale was a wealthy man with business interests throughout Catalina who was about to be honored as Person of the Year before someone strangled him with his own tie and tossed his body into the water. That someone appears to be Nick, who had a raw deal from Jules and no alibi the night of his murder. To clear her brother's name, Whit will have to investigate Jules' shady associates and not exactly grief-stricken family members - with the unwelcome help of Felix Ramirez, police diver and Whit's ex-boyfriend who's looking to rekindle their relationship.
This is the first volume in the “ Whit and Whiskers Mystery” series.
Oliver: The Cat Who Saved Christmas by Sheila Norton
Oliver the cat is a timid little thing, and rarely ventures from his home in the Foresters’ Arms.
Then his life changes dramatically when a fire breaks out in the pub kitchen and he is left homeless and afraid. But, with the kindness of the humans around him, he soon learns to trust again. And, in his own special way, he helps to heal those around him. However, it isn’t until he meets a little girl in desperate need of a friend that he realizes this village needs a Christmas miracle...

The pilgrims’ hymn for Yoshiminedera Temple (善峯寺) from a hymnal for the thirty-three temples of the western pilgrimage circuit dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva (観音菩薩)
My own rough, tentative translation follows:
Number Twenty: Nishiyama Yoshiminedera Temple (Tendai School) in Otokuni District, Yamashiro Province
Oshiochō Neighborhood, Ōharano, Ukyō Ward, Kyoto
A hymn for Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kannon:
Cloudy skies raining As we depart level fields Towards mountain paths, Yet close to Yoshimine The evening showers clear

【commission work/TOPAZ新御徒町】
under construction/dish,forgetful,sellotape,laughing
2023
1620×2590(mm)
oil painting, oil pastel and spray paint on canvas

recently finished reading the travelling cat chronicles by hiro arikawa and i bawled my eyes out as expected. i loved reading about satoru's friends and my favorite out of them all must be yoshimine,i loved reading the progression of their friendship and how they bonded over their school's gardening club. chikako and sugi's relationship with satoru was also very interesting. i particularly found sugi to be the most interesting because of how he felt satoru was a better person than him in a lot of ways. i don't really wanna spoil too much cause i feel like the story is better read completely blind but yeah it was a very bittersweet book. after that i read schoolgirl by osamu dazai. man for a book as short as this one,it really hits you quite hard. i think i get it now when people kept saying how dazai's works makes you have an existential crisis. so yeah i'm very satisfied with these two reads

Ōoku is an ambitious type of manga project that doesn’t crop up too often, so it’s got top marks for making a narrative of history without glossing over or flattening the more icky bits. Sticking to realistic character designs keeps it immersive. All well and good. I do gotta say that by the time we pass the framing device (getting to the reign of Yoshimine in vol 9), the designs pretty much rotate between 8 characters. Child, stodgy woman, stodgy man, sharp-faced woman, cute guy, handsome man, beautiful woman, cute woman. Woe betide any who try to tell them apart except by name
