Rarepair Exchange Guidelines

With a great deal of thanks and appreciation to @10yearpromise for letting us use their guidelines and instructions here and on AO3!

Welcome to the DMBJ Rarepairs Exchange! This is a fic and art exchange for the fandom rarepairs, which we’re defining as any DMBJ ship which currently has less than 3% of DMBJ fic authors who have posted English-language fics for it on AO3.

In this exchange, participants will be anonymously matched to create gifts for one another during a two month creating period.

This exchange is open to all the DMBJ canons - if it’s DMBJ, then it’s eligible! It will take place on AO3, so you need an AO3 account to participate--if you don’t have one, you can request an invitation code here. If there isn’t enough time, no worries - contact the mods at [email protected] or here on tumblr (preferred) and we can send you an invitation!

Guidelines

Your creation must focus on your recipient’s requested ship (or one or more of their requested ships, if they have nominated multiple ones). While unrequested background ships - including background ships which weren't eligible for Rarepair Exchange themselves - are fine (unless listed as a Do Not Want), the focused ship/s must be one or more of the requested ships. 1a. In polyamorous ships that comprise of a ship that would not be eligble on its own plus additional character/s, the focus of the requests and the works created for them must lie on the overall rarepair ship (for existing relationship works) or on addition of the new character/s, not on the non-eligible ship/s of the polycule (for example, a work created for a request of Baye/Zhang Qishan/Yin Xinyue must either focus on the three as a whole, or focus on Yin Xinyue becoming part of the relationship. The Baye/Zhang Qishan relationship must not be the focus).

You will be expected to create a gift matching your recipient’s request. Filling any specifying prompts is not obligatory, but try to create something you honestly think your recipient will enjoy!

You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want).

The minimum requirements for the gifts are 300 words for fic or one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital; no manips).

After the matching is done, all the requests will be made visible to everyone to allow for treating! There are no minimum requirements for treats (but remember to mind your recipient’s do not wants!). You can also create manips and fanvids for treats.

This is an anonymous exchange: refrain from discussing your assignment in public. After the works are revealed, there'll be one week anon period when the creators remain anonymous before the creator reveals.

If at any point you need to drop out, just click on the “default” button on your AO3 assignment page (https://archiveofourown.org/users/YOURNAME/assignments); we’ll find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your recipient instead. If you need an extension to finish your gift, contact the mods before the deadline.

After the reveals, comment on your gift.

Most importantly: be excellent to each other!

Eligible Ships

An eligible ship for the Rarepair Exchange is any DMBJ ship which currently has less than 3% of DMBJ fic authors who have posted English-language fics for it on AO3. You can see how many authors are currently writing for each ship here.

For the 2022 exchange, this means that all DMBJ ships are eligible apart from the following:

Sign-Up information

Sign-ups will take place here on AO3, starting on September 6th. There, you can fill out details about your request and offer. You can edit your sign-up at any time until the sign-ups close on September 12th.

When signing up, you will be able to choose fandom and genre tags, as well as specify any additional details.

You will have to select the DMBJ canon you’re interested in creating and receiving a gift in:

If you’re interested in a canon that is not currently a tag on AO3, such as the South Sea Archives, Moonfall Echo, or the donghua, you can say in your request details that you would like something in one of these canons. Please be aware, though, that the more obscure your request, the harder it will be for your gifter.

This does not mean that you’re limited to requesting or creating a work during the canon timelines for those series/books. It’s just to mark which canons you’re familiar with to allow for easier matching: some participants might have a preference for a particular canon era, some might not be familiar with all the versions. You still have to choose your preferred canon eras even if you want to create or receive an AU.

Request

In this section, you describe the gift you would like to receive.

Fandom - you have to choose at least one. If you’re willing to receive a gift in any canon era, you can just click “Any”!

Characters - you have to choose at least one character that you would like your gift to be about.

Relationships - you have to choose at least one rarepair that you would like your gifter to write / draw for you.

Genre/Additional Tags - you have to choose at least three tags.

Optional Details - here’s where you can go into more detail about your perfect exchange gift!

If you run out of slots in the Relationships section (there is a limit of 20), you can list additional potential rarepairs here. Also, if you don’t have a specific ship in mind, but would like any ship involving a particular character, you can say that instead (e.g. ‘Liu Sang / any’, ‘Pangzi / any’, etc.)

You can also include:

General Likes: your creator may, but doesn’t have to, include them. This isn’t a place for detailed prompts, just general themes you enjoy, like getting together or established relationship.

Please note that fics featuring QPRs, ace, and/or aro characters are absolutely valid things to request in a ship exchange. You may also request a fully platonic relationship if you wish.

DNW (Do Not Wants): things that your creator must not include - squicks, triggers, characters or things that you simply don’t like. Remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation about why something is a DNW, and that DNW are not meant to be taken personally. Just list the things you don’t like, “DNW: X, Y.”

Prompts/specific ideas: if you have any prompts, you can also put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.

If you run out of space for your prompts, you can write a prompt post on another platform like Dreamwidth, Tumblr, GoogleDocs, etc. and put the link in your sign up.

If you chose novels as one of your fandoms, you can use this field to list the ones you’re familiar with, such as ‘Books 1-4′ , ‘main series only′, ‘main series + Southern Archives’, etc. If you're interested in receiving a Buried Tree Devil - Book 3 Donghua gift, you can also mention it here.

The requests will be made publicly visible after matching is done, so that others will be able to create treats (additional gifts) based on them!

Offer

Fandom - you have to choose at least one. If you can create works for any canon era, you can choose “Any”!

Characters - you have to choose at least one character you're willing to write about. If you're happy to write for any character, you can choose "Any".

Relationships - you have to choose at least one ship you're willing to write about. If you're happy to write for any ship, you can choose "Any".

Genre/Additional Tags - you have to choose at least three.

Optional Details - in this field, you can tell us more about the kind of works you like to create, for example if you really prefer established relationship, feel best with certain kinds of AUs, or like writing darkfic. We’ll take it into account when matching! By the same token, if there’s something you really don’t want to write, let us know here as well.

This includes any additional rarepairs and/or characters if you hit the 20 item limit abot, or relationship types that you particularly do or do not want to write for. If you list a preference about rarepairs / relationships to not for, we will endeavour to match you to a giftee who has not requested those things. If you do not specify a pairing to write or not write for, we will assume that you are okay with giving anything a shot!

If you chose novels as one of your fandoms, you can use this field to list the ones you’re familiar with, such as ‘Books 1-4′ , ‘main series only′, ‘main series + Southern Archives’, etc. If you’re interested in creating a Buried Tree Devil - Book 3 Donghua gift, you can also mention it here.

In the optional details of your offer, you can also name anyone you don’t want to be matched to, for example your regular beta, and we will do our best to avoid matching you!

The offers will only ever be visible to the mods; never to anyone else.

Your assignment

You will be matched to create a gift for someone who requested at least one of the fandoms that you offer, with as many similar genres/likes as possible. This exchange will be hand-matched, after using AO3’s matching algorithm to first generate the potential matches.

If you have any issues when you receive your assignment (you have a question about it or think there’s an issue with it), contact the mods as soon as possible. Do not contact your recipient on your own.

You will have to create a gift for your recipient, fulfilling the minimum requirements of fandom, genre, and ship, and avoiding any stated "do not wants". Filling exact prompts is optional, but try to create something matching your recipient's likes that they will enjoy!

You will have to post your gift to the exchange AO3 collection before the due date (November 30th), using the "gift this work to" option to give it to your recipient. Your work will remain in the collection only visible to you and the mods until the reveals happen. Remember to tag your work appropriately or use the "chose not to warn" warning.

Treating

Treats are additional gifts for the participants! To allow for treating, the requests will be made visible when matching is done. You can create treats at any time until the creator reveals! There are no minimum requirements for treats, and in addition to fic and art, manips and fanvids are also allowed. As with assignments, you have to respect the recipient’s Do Not Want, and while the optional details are optional, try to create something fitting the listed likes. One treat can only be gifted to one person.

Pinch Hits

In case someone needs to drop out, we will look for a pinch hitter to complete their assignment. Pinch hits will be posted to this tumblr and the DMBJ Yu Cun Discord.

Extensions

If you think you can finish your assignment, but you need a day or two more, you can always ask the mods for an extension!

Multi-chapter Fics

If you are writing a multi-chapter fic for the exchange and don’t want to drop the entire fic at once, these are the posting guidelines for it:

Multi-chapter fics that are assignment fills must be fully written and at least the first chapter posted by the assignment deadline, ready for the fic reveals on December 10.

From December 10, at least one chapter is to be posted daily.

All chapters of the fic must be posted by the time of author reveals and end of treating on December 17 (If the fic is more than 7 chapters long, then this will mean that multiple chapters will need to be posted on some days).

Multi-chapter fics that are treats can begin to be posted at any time before December 17, but must also be fully posted by December 17.

Other important information

Make sure to check the email you use on AO3 frequently during the exchange, as it will be the primary means of communication. We might contact you if there is an issue with your sign-up or if your gift creator has a question for you.

Summary:

Taking Zhu Bajie from a new perspective as the starting point, we conduct a new interpretation of the original work and create a three-part magical love comedy with a time-travel theme. The core of the play combines the concepts of "Buddha's Tears" and "greed, anger, and ignorance" in Buddhism to reshape Zhu Bajie's three love stories in the Tang Dynasty, the late Qing Dynasty, and modern times.

In the first life, Bajie and Cuilan parted ways and shed their first tear. After returning from Buddhist scriptures, Bajie still couldn't forget Cuilan, so he begged the Buddha to let him reincarnate and renew their relationship, and the Buddha agreed. In the second life, Bajie and Cuilan ended up regretting it again, shedding a second tear. In the third life, Bajie traveled to a modern campus and crashed the school anniversary party as soon as he appeared on the stage, making the big star Gu Kexin make a fool of himself. He even proposed to Gao Cuilan in this life - the teacher in charge of the school anniversary, Gao Shengnan - in public, and the school anniversary turned into a farce. Tang Seng and his apprentices, who traveled through time a year earlier, recognized Bajie and took him back. Cuilan is going to hold a drama festival and Gu Kexin discovers that Cuilan is having an affair with her childhood sweetheart Song Hexiao, and goes against Cuilan everywhere. Cuilan vowed to leave school if she couldn't handle it.

Here Gao Cuilan was so anxious that Bajie realized that he would return to his second life as soon as he fell asleep. The past emotions inspired Bajie to propose marriage again and again, but after seeing Cuilan secretly crying, he realized that what he really should do was to help Cuilan run the drama festival. The four master and apprentices began to make suggestions for the drama festival. Bajie took the initiative to serve as screenwriter and changed the script to the story of his and Cuilan's two previous lives. During the rehearsal process, the two always quarreled over the details of the script, and Song Hexiao took advantage of the opportunity to date Cuilan. The drama festival was successfully held. Bajie knew that Cuilan would not survive until the age of 25 as long as she was with him, so he gave up the opportunity to Song Hexiao. But Cuilan was still sent to the hospital. It turned out that today was her 25th birthday, and she had fallen in love with Bajie. Song Hexiao appeared in the ward and told Bajie that he was a demon and that all this was a bet between him and the Buddha. After realizing this, Bajie and the four master and disciples launched the final battle against the demon.

WIP Tag Game

I was tagged by @s1utspeare, thank you so much for always thinking of me, that always makes my day 🥺.

rules: post the names of all the files in your wip folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have wips.

Okay, all my WIPs are in google docs and most of them have a separate doc for all the notes and the snippets I cut out (and the big ones like Lonely House and Sound of war have a third doc for everything that has been posted because they don't load smoothly on my phone when they get too big), I don't think I'm going to add those. I also added the fandom at the beginning, so I don't get confused ^^°°° Because: Everything has at least a working title, mostly lines from songs that I like and I tend to change them frequently, always searching for the perfect title.

TLT - Sound of War - The Crystal Menace & Promise in the Dark: My Mecha AU and what I am currently writing for the most. It's going to have a second part, but since I tend to write everything in one doc and just cut out the things that have been posted and that are done, it's just one doc for both parts.

TLT - Love is like ghosts: A M9-era fuba short story (hopefully oneshot) where Ba Ye gets cursed/poisoned and Fo Ye and Rishan have to make a deal with a very strange man to get the antidote/anti-curse(?).

TLT - Underneath it all, we're just savages (hidden behind shirts, ties and marriages): Another M9-era fuba short story with Rishan-whump, a mysterious tomb and Fo Ye and Ba Ye being under the influence of said tomb.

TLT - Fofuba Smut Oneshots: Even though there are different scenarios with Fo Ye/Rishan, Ba Ye/Rishan and Fo Ye/Ba Ye/Rishan, and all of them are in progress, they don't get separate docs. I am very, very slow when writing smut...

TLT - There's an old familiar silence: And another M9 story with Fo Ye, Ba Ye & Rishan trying to find an antidote for a poisoned Yin Xinyue in another mysterious tomb. Of course with Rishan-whump and eventual fuba at the end. I am so predictable and boring XD

TLT - All the King's horses: The only thing that's not fuba. This is a Hei Xiazi/Zhang Rishan Immortal AU where they are both very, very old and have been together for a thousand years or so until Xiazi gets cursed so Rishan forgets him again and again. I don't know if I'm ever actually going to write that one, maybe it'll go away if I just ignore it long enough?

TLT - Fragile and composed: This is my 'ohhh now I want to write a story where Fo Ye & Rishan get kidnapped and tortured, too!'-story. Very, very dark.

TLT - You got my heart on it's knees: Yet another M9 era oneshot for Valashu's prompt about sad and pouty Rishan where Ba Ye is mean to him and he gets very sad and pouty.

ST - Until my darkness goes: Stranger Things and Harringrove, I started this one in 2019 after watching season 2, so it's of course canon-divergent, featuring powers!Billy, enemies to friends to lovers and the whole gang. I don't know if I'll ever finish it, because I haven't really worked on it since september 2019...

ST - It's always darkest before the dawn: Another Stranger Things Harringrove story, very very dark Billy-whump. Just like the other Stranger Things one I haven't touched it since 2019...

O - Dark Reign: Original Story about a Vampire and a Werewolf who fall in love with each other and get caught up in a big war to save the world from demons and total destruction. Rewrite of an old story I wrote with a friend and I haven't really worked on it for quite a while... I don't think I know 11 people... Let me see, maybe, @gaiahenshin, @elletromil, @daydreamorama, @lacommunarde, @kholran. (Is it okay to tag you? Please tell me if it's not okay!) And everyone who reads this and wants to talk about their WIP, please feel tagged!

Mystic 9 thoughts and meanderings below the cut because that Wandering in the username is par for the course for the Babbit. Also, spoilers ahoy!

First off, I love most of the actors. Qiu Dekao and Tanaka Ryoukou are two I could have done without. Smug snakes are not my thang and if I have to mute the sound just to make it through a scene, the characters aren't important to me. Qui Dekao, especially, is a rug chewing git.

Much of the plot sort of works. You have the usual problem of magic I mean scientific meteorites that Do Stuff To You and are wanted because they can make you Live Forever. You have the sneaky nasties trying to get the super scientific meteorites and manipulate everyone. You have the strong heroes and brave girlfriends who do their best to stop them. All par for the course in a series like this.

I love that the primary romance, between Zhang Qishan and Yin Xinyue doesn't have her be the constantly in need of rescue overconfident female who forces the hero to put himself in danger time and again to keep her safe. (Worst type of lover ever!) She has moments where one fears she'll go that way, but she mostly stays on course as a level-headed strong female lead who isn't a fighter.

The romance between Er Yue Hong and Ya Tou is both frustrating and heartbreaking. I can fully understand her determination to do everything she can while she's alive but dear GODS woman, you were making yourself sicker every time you pushed yourself. Please. For the love of your beautiful meowmeow hubby, stop that!

I liked that much of the villains' subplots involved them stabbing each other in the back as often as they tried to stab Zhang Qishan. That part felt very much in character for all of them, given their tendency to regard themselves as righteously right even when wrong. Such a pity they fail.

I wish the series was allowed to play with the idea of connected parallel worlds, instead of needing to cover up setups like that with stuff that messes with the head. The meteorite creating some sort of interlocked reality that causes you to wander through other timelines is a nice science fictioney sort of set up.

The ending feels rushed and uninteresting, leaving me wishing they'd stopped at the point where the Mystic Nine come together. Hell, I wish the ending was the Mystic Nine working together to take out Tanaka Ryoukou and Qiu Dekao. (I hate that my Chinese name shares a character with that man, damnit! VIRTUOUS? HIM? HAH!... ah... anyway....)

The whole thing probably should have been shorter and could have done with fewer long sad scenes of Er Yue Hong grieving over Ya Tou. An understandable grief even if I wish she was a bit more of a personality.

If nothing else, now I've finished this I may finally start on Tomb of the Sea. Though I think I'll take a break for a bit before immersing myself in that one. Still don't wanna watch Wang Can go down again just yet. *pout*
