I've been working on my new wip a bit and wanted to post the unedited version to see if its worth committing to rn or if I should wait a bit

Huge trigger warning (They'll be all in the tags) but it's also missing a few parts so bare with me

Tonks looked down at the picture, the pale man had blood dripping from his nose, leaking from his mouth, eyes blood strained. 

"Harry, it happened again" she shoved the file into his hands. He flipped through it, looking at the torched body, deep cuts ripped black robes, blood pooled underneath him, Harry was far too comfortable with the scene. Throwing the file onto the pile of similar murders he rubbed his head. 

"Again?" Harry glanced at the pile, a high stack of grotesque pictures nearly toppling over, unsettling papers sticking out.

"Yah'' she sighed, this was the 16th poisoning ever since Voldemort's defeat. All people found the same way cases seemingly unrelated, it seems like his death brought the worst out in people. Attacks where becoming more frequent, suicide rates shot up and serial killers running lose. There wasn't enough people in the whole ministry to help build their world back together

"Got any leads on the stabbings" she picked up another file, thinner then the others but deaths just as violent. 

"Yes actually!" Harry smiled "er well it's kind of a lead anyway but we discovered that it's not a spell that's doing the killing and whatever is being used is tainted with dark magic, like dark dark magic." He finished up, most dark objects were being confiscated but if they could trace the magic they could find the object and the owner! 

"That's brilliant, keep it up and maybe we can put away one of these nut cases" Tonks said, relieved to finally have some good news. The war might've ended 6 months ago but it hadn't stopped the death eaters from fighting, people were still going missing, being kidnapped, killed. Last month they put away Fenrir for trafficking magical creatures, selling werewolves and seers to god knows who for god knows what. Harry picked up his file, tired eyes scanning the sheets looking for answers he gave a big yawn before turning to the next page

"You can go home you know" Tonks politely took the file from his hands, she occasionally caught Harry sleeping in her office and was getting concerned. 

"No, there's too much work to be done" Harry picked up the previous file, turning the pages but not looking at the pictures. 

"Hermione's not there, it gets kinda lonely you know? She's busy reading journals from last week's raid but lots of them are burnt up. She wants the piece together what she can, I mean she thinks it's some kind of dark magic they are talking about. Hey maybe it's the same magic that's in my victims!" Harry shot up, throwing the file back into Tonks desk and taking his, 

"I'm going to go see her" he got up. "Coming with? It might say something about your victims too" Harry opened the door, waiting for Tonks to leave. 

"Sure, whatever I can take" she looked at her watch "shit i'm going to be late! Sorry Harry but I'm going to have to take you up on that offer later, I have another meeting" she smiled rolling her eyes, being head of the Auras was hard on her but before Moody died he put in a request for her to be trained as his successor. 

"Ill catch you later then!" Harry waved, running off, Tonks watched him disappear into the crowd. Harry had been a big help in putting away the death eaters, Hermione as well, but they were just children and would soon burn out. Tonks shook her head, a smile still on her face and both kids would do anything to help. Looking back at her watch she swore, swinging her office door shut and making way to her next meeting. 

Rushing along the corridors she looked at the wanted pictures on the wall, most faces of death eaters others who used the war for exploitation. One face always stood out, the young rosy cheeks stood out against the hardened faces, the innocent life vivid in his eyes. She tried to keep Ron off the wanted wall for as long as she could, keeping him with the missing persons, alongside her friends and family but after a while and debate he was slapped into the wanted side, poster saying "traitor, found dead or alive." 

"Oh excuse me! Uhhh- of- oh hi Tonks'' someone ran headfirst into Tonks, making them both fall. 

"Hey Hermione'' Tonks picked the bushy haired girl off of her. Hermione scrambled, grabbing the fallen papers and tucking them back into her arms ``you know Harrys looking for you" she handed Hermione some papers, ink slightly smudged. 

"Oh really? Good I need to talk to him, in some of the books I found the mentions of horcruxes and I think somebody was doing experiments with them, it kept mentioning the " devils fire" and " the others" I don't really know what it means but Harry has destroyed more then me so he's the experts." She said in one breath, eyes wide and full of curiosity. Her hair bounced down her back, papers slowly slipping out of her arms. "I'll catch you later okay?" She smiled, starting to walk off. "I gotta go talk with Harry" her voice waved as she noticed the picture of Ron. His disappearance hit her hard, she could barely go to the burrow neverminded talk the other Weasleys but she was slowly healing, she was even going over for dinner on Sunday. Remembering her previous task she ran off, being late for her meeting.

"Did you find my baby?" Miss Chang ran up to her, hope in her eyes. Tonks barely has walked into the door before the sad lady interrogates her. 

"Miss if you'd sit down?" She gestured to the couch. She hated this part of her job but no one else was willing to do it. 

"But did you find her?" She clung to Tonks robes as she guided her to her seat. "You found her right? My babys okay?" Tears welled in her eyes,

"We are following up on some leads today, I promise I'll let you know what happens okay?" Tonks tried to reassure the crying woman, she has had far too many "meetings' ' with grieving families and just once wanted to give somebody good news. Cho went missing in february, snatched away from her bed no one knew who took her or where she went but because they never found a body they are going off the motion that she's still alive, even if the chances are slim.

"Sorry I'm late" Tonks sat down at the head of the table, two auras where waiting for her full aura gear, ready to go out.

"Where are we heading off too?" He asked

"I got note of an abandoned death eater hideout, it was mostly used in the first war and was used for transporting hostages in the second. Cho was moved and I believe there might be evidence there, if not for her for somebody." Tonks said in a breath, anxious for her mission.

The door creaked open, noisily scratching against the concrete floor. It echoed throughout the room, a dim light lit up a cell, blood soaking the floor beside it. A table sat beside the cell, blood dripped off of it, an axe and blood soaked chains draped over each other 

"Hey boys!" Tonks froze where she stood, the voice came from the cell, sounding familiar. 

"Aura Tonks show yourself" she announced,  standing up straighter. Hearing the rattling of chains she stepped forward, coming closer to the cell but keeping her distance. The man shook the door, proving it was locked and rested his hands on the bars, pale skin was covered in blood, it dripped off his long fingertips, falling into the huge pool underneath, dirt matted the parts of his arms that weren't covered in blood, building up under long fingernails. Tentatively making her way over she noticed the man moved, hearing the chains clanking around, 

"Are you coming?" He mocked her, the chains moved again, clanking against one another. Angry she marched forward, and held tightly in her hand wanting to tell off this man for mocking her, but the sight she saw surprised her. 

There he was, thick red hair,  bright blue eyes, well over 6ft and silvery scars wrapping around his arm was Ron Weasley. 

"Took you long enough" he spoke to the ceiling, he was lying on his back, legs raised up against the fall and arms folded under his head. Thick chains clasped around his wrist, connecting to the ground, he laid in a pool of blood, it coated the back of his head, drenching his dirty hair. He looked as if he hadn't taken a bath in weeks, hair covered in dirt making it black, his clothes hung from him, sticking to his body and smelling of sweat, his legs where exposed, all he had on was a pair of shorts, clearly the rest of the jean had been torn off, his bright freckles were invisible under the brown and red, large purple bruises covered his skin, cuts and scrapes alongside them. 

He's been considered missing, no one really knows the true date he disappeared but he hadn't been seen since he left Harry and Hermione

Treats Ron with more respect than most fanfiction written in the 2000s did. It subverts a lot of the tropes about the character that were common-place at the time (for example, Ron’s apparent “dumbness” being a clever ruse used by him to get out of tough situations). Rated M, but (if you’re like me) you can easily skip over the saucy bits and not miss any plot threads.

@diva-gonzo‘s  The Ron Weasley Chronicles, which is Ron centric but also not focused on his relationship with Hermione but as related to his work as an Auror, with Harry and other Aurors.

Tangled, by @burgundydahlia. A plot to bring down one of the Wizarding world’s prominent business leaders brings two friends back together after years of separation. But will their reunion be bittersweet? And what will happen when they realise nothing is as it seems? It’s not completed just yet.

Not as a last resort (parts 1 and 2) by Arabella. An AU Romione fanfic about Ron and Hermione having to spent the night inside Hagrid’s cabin due to a snowstorm, and having to share a bed (one of my favourite fluff tropes), as well as discussing the upcoming 2nd Yule Ball. Not rated, but I’d give it a K+ to a mild T.

@hillnerd‘s “The Wonderful Won-Won”.  Being a teenager is difficult at best- but throw in a dose of flirtations, insecurity and snogs- well that makes it even worse. Ron is torn about his emotions regarding Hermione. For now he throws himself into Lavender. Starts off with that pairing, but is firmly Romione. Rated M, but several of the chapters are ace-safe (and I do believe Hilly made a version of the series that is completely ace safe throughout, so I’d suggest asking them as well).

Ron x Harry fanfiction;

‘Engaged’ by I’mdeadsothere. All around Harry everyone is getting engaged, leaving Harry to wonder if he’ll ever have the same honour. Especially when the one person he truly loves, well, it’s complicated. Rated T. Contains strong language.

‘Beds’ by I’mdeadsothere. Now that the war is over Harry treats himself by buying a nice big fluffy bed. Only it’s too nice, too fluffy, and WAY too big. Ron has the perfect solution, but it’ll change a lot more than just how Harry feels about his bed. Rated T. Contains strong language.

“Harry Potter And The World That Went Bloody Insane” by The Slice. “I know something you don’t know” is, apparently, the essence of Harry Potter’s love life. Harry’s certain that the world has been reading one too many romance novels, but then, Harry’s always been a bit oblivious. Featuring Protective!Attentive!Caring!Ron and Oblivious!Harry in their stinky flat and everyone shipping Harry/Ron. It’s awesome.

Do you ship Rarry?

Hello Anon :). Thanks for the ask, I feel strangely excited - I’m new to the answering nice-anons part. Nah, I don’t ship Rarry. I’m too deeply a Romione and Hinny-shipper at heart for that, and I don’t really like multishipping (not that there is anything wrong with that, but it’s not my cup of tea). Once my heart loves and goes out to a ship, I will remain faithful to it till the end - I’m romantic like that (it made things difficult when I was watching Glee, because all they do is switching partners, but I stood my ground nonetheless). Furthermore, I love too much Ron and Harry’s brotherhood (they are even more than brothers I think, they are each other’s special person) and the trio’s relationship and dynamic for that to happen. I feel like you have to break how the Trio works if you want to put Ron and Harry together, and it is really hard to picture a universe in which Ron and Harry date and in which Hermione would not be excluded, given how close Ron and Harry already are in the books. But a lot of my Tumblr friends, like Vivi or Ayesha do love Rarry and that is fine. I understand the appeal of this ship ! They love Rarry for the same reason I don’t want it to happen : Ron and Harry are thick as thieves, and love each other more than any words could express. Rarry shippers want this closeness to be a romantic one, and I don’t want it to be anything other than friendship. But if I had to pair Ron with someone other than Hermione, it would be Harry. Ronarry shippers have a problem with how things were handled in the books, and especially in regard to Hermione’s lack of character development and episodes in which her mistakes were excused by the narrative. While I completely agree with that, I’m not really with them when they say that Harry understood Ron better. Hermione had to spell it out to him that Ron felt insecure in the fourth book, and she clearly notices often how bad he thinks of himself, even if she is not the best at handling his insecurity complex and even if she’s more oblivious than Harry in that regard in the sixth book. But you see, Harry is also someone who is rather self-absorbed and who bottles everything up, and I’m not sure he would be able to give Ron the reassurances and praise he craves if he’s focused on something else (unlike Hermione who is talkative). On the other hand, I’m not sure Ron is confident enough to always confront Harry if Harry crosses a line or to snap him out of his brooding, even though he’s rather brilliant at dealing with Harry’s emotional needs in general. Of course each couple would have its problems, but I prefer Ron and Hermione’s dynamic for a couple than the one Harry and Ron does, even if Hermione will have to work on the fact that she is very critical. Also I’m too much of a romantic and I love the big Romione scenes in the books : Ron coming back to Hermione because he heard her say his name, and her voice became his light which came into his heart to guide him (honestly think about that and tell me again that J.K.R does not know how to write romance); Hermione sobbing at the Snatchers to leave Ron alone; Ron begging Bellatrix to torture him instead of her and then shouting her name and pounding the walls; Hermione kissing Ron on the cheek before his first Quidditch match; Ron saying Hermione’s name in his comatose state because he heard her speak- her voice is always how he comes back; Hermione looking tenderly at Ron because of his compassion, Ron going into the forest full of spiders to save Hermione, Hermione breaking the rules for Ron, etc… I won’t lie though, I can enjoy a good Rarry fic, mostly because I’m desperate for good Ron Weasley centric fanfictions (Solstice Muse had me reading anything with Ron Weasley in it : Ron/Harry, Ron/Seamus, Ron/Seamus/Harry, Ron/Kingsley, Ron/Dean, Ron/Krum, Ron/Rosmerta… I have to make a very shameful confession, I did read the fic she wrote with Ron/Harry and Nick Clegg/David Cameron which ends in a joyous sexual feast… Yes I read a Nick Clegg/David Cameron, and yes this was my personal dirty secret but no I don’t ship Clegg/Cameron that is gross). Yet those stories will never be my favorites. I’m a canon purist and love too much the way things were written in the books. Give me Ron and Hermione flirting and giving each other lovesick and lustful glances with Harry and Ginny teasing them and playing the blasé-who-have-seen-it-coming-for-years. Bonus points if they spy on them and end up being scarred for life.

Personal headcanon/rant: of magical prowess and bashing

You know all these fanfics where you have Super!Harry with a bunch of superpowers or Hermione creating spells that Merlin himself wouldn’t be able to dream about? And how, oddly, Ron is pretty much always left out of the loop when it comes to the Powerful!fanfic bunch, because people would rather have a spoiled brat of a Death Eater or an asshole teacher be übermensch?

We know Snape is a good duelist and has “created” spells (unless he simply dug them out of a library somewhere), but he’s got twenty years of experience along with some skirmishes he must have gone through with his fellow DEs. We know Hermione’s good at spellcasting but that she also studies heavily, and that she has trouble with spells that are not entirely theoretical (the Patronus). Harry doesn’t study as much as Hermione does and is not that great at magic; the only spells he can to cast without any problem are the Patronus, Expelliarmus and Stupefy. As for Malfoy… He does Serpensortia once and then we never see him fight again because he’s a big coward. No super-strong magic here.

So why am I complaining about stupid fanfiction that makes characters who have no superior magical prowess whatsoever into the new Merlins of the world?

First, because they always leave Ron out.

Second, because if there’s one wizard in the Potterverse, apart from Voldemort and Dumbledore, who deserves to be given attention about his magic powers, it’s Ron.

Windschild8178 (some of you Ron-lovers might recognize them as the author of the excellent fanfic Stay Standing on FFN) is writing a few Ron-centric stories right now and has written an extremely good author’s note on their story The Boogeyman, a rant about all of the hidden potential Ron’s character presents, and how it gets ignored by pretty much all the HP fandom. I recommend you read it because it’s pretty much as if they took the very soul of Ron-lovers and put it into words.

And now, on to my own, much bigger, much less organized personal rant.

I’ve always had the feeling that Ron was the most magically gifted/powerful of the trio. His so-called “averageness” is very much a lie. His magic is fuelled by his emotions and as such becomes even stronger. This headcanon of mine is founded in several actual canon happenings that we can observe throughout the series (in the books only. Come on, dearest Stevie giving credit to Ron? Now there’s a laugh).

Not only does Ron react very strongly to external magic (the Veelas, Crouch Jr’s Imperius Curse leaves him skipping steps for more than twenty minutes after he’s been freed from it, he notices the locket’s “pulse” whereas Harry only vaguely feels it, he has the very correct feeling that Voldy’s name shouldn’t be said out loud), he also demonstrates great abilities when he gets serious. … and when he doesn’t, as well.

I mean, the class genius masters Wingardium Leviosa and makes her feather levitate 20 inches. Great, fine. Four hours later, the the kid who couldn’t do just that casts Wingardium Leviosa and makes a shit heavy club outright fly 12 feet off the ground!! And nobody thinks that this is slightly impressive?! Hermione states “Ron knocked it out with its own club” and no teacher raises an eyebrow? It’s like Ron is actively ignored by pretty much everyone besides Harry and Hermione.

Second year, Hermione herself tells us that the slug-belching charm is a spell that’s hard to cast, and it’s even worse with a broken wand. Guess who casts it, NONVERBALLY, with a broken wand? Ronniekins, that’s who! Percy was barely learning how to cast nonverbal spells at the time! Oh, oh, and you know what’s even more impressive? Ron’s wand was broken, but it wasn’t even his own wand! It was Charlie’s! Ollivander tells us that a good wizard can do magic with anyone’s wand but it’s easier with their own wand. Basically: holy shit, Ron!

Ron’s crazy magic settles down a bit during PoA and GoF, or at least I can’t remember any instance where JKR describes something unexpected happening concerning him.

However, we then have OoTP, and this time our beloved redhead’s quite in shape. For example, during his Charms O.W.L., it’s said that he transformed a plate into a toadstool/mushroom without knowing how he did it. A wooden plate… into a toadstool… a toadstool, which can actually be considered as… food.

HOLY SHIT RON JUST BROKE GAMP’S LAW OF ELEMENTAL TRANSFIGURATION.

Yeah yeah it was a throwaway joke and JKR created Gamp’s Law in the seventh book so she could justify why the trio was able to starve during the Camping Trip Of Pointlessness™, but she should have known better, or actually establish Gamp’s Law earlier on in the series (after all, they turn pincushions into headgehogs at some point in the earlier years, who’s to say you can’t eat a hedgehog?). And some people might say “but nooo its not food if its a poisoned toadstoool ron is not good at megic bcuz hurmion is bettur, ur full of lies” well guess what, in order to be poisoned you actually have to eat, meaning chew, swallow and digest - or rather fail to digest - the poisonous thing. BAM. IT’S CANON. RON BROKE GAMP’S LAW OF ELEMENTAL TRANSFIGURATION. (And JKR has the freaking gall to give him the same results as Harry only slightly less better. Can you feel her prejudice against her own character?) And that’s not all he does in fifth year!

At the Department of Mysteries, Luna tells us that she, Ron and Ginny fled from four Death Eaters that followed them into a room full of planets. Four Death Eaters. One breaks Ginny’s ankle and Luna blasts him with Pluto. Then they collect Ron, who got cursed by “them” and is acting all loopy and run back to Harry. … what about the three Death Eaters unaccounted for in the planet room? Well apparently Ron fought all three of them, got cursed by at least two, and still won, considering no DEs are chasing after Luna and her group. All hail the King.

In HBP, finally, we’ve got that time where Ron broke up with Lavender and was feeling so guilty, he was simply waving his wand around and… and it starts snowing. INSIDE HOGWARTS. He’s making it snow. INSIDE HOGWARTS. No incantation, no spell, nothing, just “I feel like I’m a coldhearted bastard” and suddenly it’s snowing INSIDE HOGWARTS.

And of course we can’t forget how Voldemort casts a Silencing Spell over the people of Hogwarts, holding his Elder Wand, saying Harry died like an idiot, only for Ronald Weasley, official best friend and badass extraordinaire, to scream AT VOLDEMORT “HE BEAT YOU!” and the charm, the super-powerful, cast-by-Voldemort-and-the-Elder-Wand Charm BREAKS. He wasn’t even using a wand, he wasn’t even saying an incantation, Ronald Weasley, through the simple power of his rage and grief, freaking breaks a silencing charm made by VOLDE-FREAKING-MORT AKA THE GUY THAT COULD HOLD HIS OWN AGAINST DUMBLEDORE.

So that’s well and good but if Ron was so talented, why didn’t he put his magical power to a use, the Ron-lover asks curiously and the Ron-basher sneers contemptuously?

The answer’s simple: 1) blame JKR for getting prejudiced against her own character as she was writing her series; 2) his perpetual negative billions self-esteem that could have been solved had any of his friends bothered paying a little attention to him.

One of the reasons why I’m so hostile to Ron-bashing is because these people look down at someone who already considers himself to be less than worthless… and then they proceed to dig him even deeper. That’s manipulative, abusive, borderline psychopathic behaviour. They do exactly what Draco Malfoy does with Weasley is our King in the first place: they kick people when they’re already down. They act like Snape acted towards Neville Longbottom (you know, the kid whose biggest fear would have been Bellatrix Lestrange had she not been hijacked by a teacher who delighted in belittling him and tormenting him?).

Ron’s the kind of person who needs reassurance to function. He needs affection and nice things said about him. Some people might think it’s pathetic but we all know better. Who doesn’t like to have nice things said about them, and to them? Wanting to be praised, to be appreciated, to be told he’s doing things right for a change, that was everything Ron Weasley needed to blossom, and that’s everything he’s denied for the whole freaking series.

Do you know what Weasley is our King is? If you’ve seen only the movies then no you don’t, and then you have no right to bash Ron. Because this song, this anthem to Ron’s glory used to be a song used to humiliate him so much, he wouldn’t be able to play Quidditch.

Picture it. Draco Malfoy. Sitting down at a table. Thinking “how can I make Ron’s self-esteem take such a nose-dive he’ll be literally paralyzed and unable to play?”. Picture Draco Malfoy actively looking for Ron’s greatest insecurities and fears of inadequacy. Picture Draco Malfoy writing a song about them and teaching it to every Slytherin in the school.

And then try to sell me Draco Malfoy the redeemed little angel, The Boy Who Made The Wrong Choice(s). See me spit right in your face because I refuse to praise an arrogant, bigoted, spiteful little bully, and you should too. He’s not so bad anymore, yes. But do you even begin to understand how Ron must have felt during this school year? How he was probably flushing in humiliation any time he saw something related to Quidditch? How he would have blamed himself for Harry and his brothers’ ban from Quidditch because he thought it was his fault for letting Malfoy get to him? How Harry never, not even once, tries to reassure him? Hermione might try but what does Hermione know about Quidditch? Ron being utterly alone and ashamed and filled with self-loathing? Hm? How’s that for sweet little Draco Malfoy who’s never been bullied and tormented by anyone, ever?

Draco wasn’t irredeemable when he joined the Death Eaters. He was irredeemable as soon as he opened his mouth to say that all Weasleys had red hair, freckles and more children than they could afford. Because while JKR “loathes a traitor”, I loath a bully. I’ve been bullied. I’ve seen people shipping characters with their bullies. I’ve seen people call such relationships as being those of “star-crossed lovers”. I’ve hated these with all my soul. Because being bullied is not romantic, nor is it cool or cute. It’s freaking awful, it’ll make you miserable, cause you to lose your friends, turn your life into a living hell.

Weasley is our King is a metaphor for harrassment and school bullying. It’s basically what a (blessedly) few teenagers have to go through during their school years. Do you know what usually happens to these teenagers? Suicide.

And the worst part? JKR herself partakes in it. JKR herself bullies her character. Do you know what happens after the triumphant reprise of Weasley is our King is sung for the very first time, when Ron saves all these goals, when he shows how incredible he can be, how good he is despite all the mockeries he’s had to endure during all of his fifth year that we didn’t see because it was All About Harry™ as usual? After Ron has finally triumphed and “proved” he was good enough to the entire school?

She has him bump his head on the door’s lintel.

Because being humiliated for an entire school year then proving your abusers they’re wrong without being ridiculed isn’t allowed when your author is named J.K. Rowling and you’re Ron Weasley.

I went on several topics there; Ron’s obvious magical prowess, how he could have used said magical prowess had JKR not restrained him with extra-heavy plot chains, and the disgusting prejudice there is against a kind-hearted character who happens to have a few faults while the bigoted bully next door gets a get-out-of-jail-free card, all by the will of an author who apparently had a nice long discussion with Steve Kloves in-between PoA and GoF to prepare the first movie adaptation of Harry Potter… and we all know how this ends.

That was my little… *looks at slider* … enormous rant on Ron, magic, and bullying. Hope I didn’t bore you that much. Cheers, Ron-lovers!

Partial Clearing- Robert Poss clears the air and fills us in.

I remember first hearing Band of Susans’ “Hope Against Hope” on the Blessing and Curse EP that the band was nice enough to send me in 1987  (I remember being doubly excited as it was one of the first promos I had received after I’d started doing DAGGER).  What was this? My classic rock records didn’t sound like this and neither did my hardcore records. No, this seemed more in the Lower East Side Sonic Young/Live Skull school of chaotic, noisy guitars and rhythms that were all over the place, music that was fairly new to me at the time. I loved it.

Band of Susans released a handful of terrific records then seemingly vanished. Robert Poss, the band’s leader/ main songwriter had a released a few records under his own name in the late 90’s/early 00′s but I completely missed ‘em. It wasn’t until a few years ago when 2018’s Frozen Flowers Curse the Day appeared in my mailbox (also included was 2010’s Settings Music for Dance, Film, Fashion and Industry) and I realized that Poss is and always was a true musician/guitarist (I mean, it was evident before but this kind of sealed it). Even though he or his music may not be in the spotlight he’s still working and experimenting with time, space and sound on his collection of guitars. Frozen Flowers... is well worth your time. 

I emailed him and asked him if I could send some questions his way and he said yes. As you’ll read he had to fill me on in the big gap from when Band of Susans broke up until present day. He was always working and creating, a true student of music. It seems like the guy has played with every experimental/avant-garde musician out there. It seems like he’s always up for a challenge. This ain’t your dad’s music, maybe more like the cool/weird uncle you rarely see but he always has something interesting to say. Robert Poss had some very interesting things to say so please do read on and enjoy.

 Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Buffalo, New York. My father was a pure New York City boy, however.

 At what age did you get your first guitar? Was anyone else in your house musical….parents or siblings?

I first briefly fooled around with an oddly tuned acoustic guitar, but at age 12 got an electric bass and started learning songs by ear off the radio. I was first strictly a bass player, but started playing electric guitar probably at around age 14 or 15.  Although I had a distant cousin who was an established concert violinist, my own immediate family was rather devoid of musical talent or pursuits. On the other hand, they appreciated music and I learned quite a bit from my older sisters during the 1960s when they would play the latest hip LPs for me.

 When you began playing guitar which guitarists influenced your style?

Mike Bloomfield, Albert King, Mick Taylor, Freddie King, Keith Richards, Rory Gallagher, and much later, The Edge, Tom Verlaine and Keith Levene.

 Tell us about your first band. 

A bunch of enthusiastic, introverted teenagers in a suburb of Buffalo trying to emulate the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. My friend Andrew Halbreich was an incredibly skilled harp (harmonica) player. My buddy (eventual Band Of Susans drummer) Ron Spitzer was a masterful musician who could play guitar, bass, and keyboards and had a great singing voice. I was in a number of bands with him over the years.

 I’m going to jump forward here…after Band Of Susans broke up did you continue playing? 

My work after B.O.S. involved various short-term collaborations and projects, some with Susan Stenger, as well as solo efforts. I also got involved with making music for modern dance. I did some solo performances in London, Cologne and Prague.  I worked with Susan on a 96-day musical installation for the Musée d’art Contemporain in Lyon, France, performed at the premier of composer Phill Niblock’s "Stosspeng" in Krems, Austria and contributed music to an Albert Maysles/Kristen Nutile documentary, Sally Gross: The Pleasure Of Stillness.  In 2009 I performed with Rhys Chatham and Robert Longo at a Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective and participated in Chatham’s Crimson Grail project for 200 guitars at Lincoln Center. I have also collaborated with Austrian visual artist Margret Wibmer and wrote some guitar-centric articles for The Leonardo Music Journal and The Tone Quest Report.  In March 2012 I performed the music of John Cage, Yoshi Wada and Phill Niblock along with long-time collaborator Susan Stenger at the AV Festival in Newcastle, U.K.  In December of 2014 I performed in Paris with Susan Stenger, Einstürzende Neubauten's F.M. Einheit and renowned actress, writer and theatre artist Olwen Fouéré as part of a two-day music and sound installation. In June of 2015, I did a series of eight performances of his original music with bassist Kato Hideki accompanying the Alexandra Beller/Dances company at La Mama for the piece “milkdreams.” In February of 2017 I participated in the recording in Lisbon, Portugal of F.M. Einheit’s L'exposition d'un rêve (The Exhibition of a Dream), which had its premiere at the Gubenkian Foundation in Paris in October of that year. Some of these are art/music hybrid projects were organized and curated by Mathieu Copeland. In recent years, I’ve also performed with some quirky art-rock groups led by Evans Wohlforth. One incarnation of the Heroes Of Toolik I played with had Billy Ficca from Television drumming and Ernie Brooks from The Modern Lovers on bass.

 I’ll jump forward again, tell us about the making of your 2018 album, Frozen Flowers Curse the Day. What was the initial inspiration behind it? 

FFCTD is a compilation of some of the music I had been doing for the choreographers Alexandra Beller and Sally Gross along with a hodge-podge of recent musical explorations. I wanted to see this music – some of which had been performed live with the two dance companies – to be formally released.

 Where did the title come from? 

It’s simply an amalgam of the two song titles from the CD.

 A few guitars....

I know you love experimenting with the guitar….is there a goal? Maybe to find a sound you’d never heard/played before?

I’ve been playing guitar forever. I am self-taught. Over the years I have been immersed in electric blues and rock and was introduced to “serious” minimalist, electronic and experimental music by Susan Stenger, Nicolas Collins and Rhys Chatham. I love improvisation as much as I love compositional structure. I think that I am an intuitive minimalist. I am more interested in texture, sonic architecture and rhythmic interplay than I am in melody.  I’ve also always liked very minimal “primitive” folk-blues guitar. These days I look for inspiration in environmental sounds, in Indian classical music, in the work of composers like Alvin Lucier and Phill Niblock and in pure electronic sounds. But I always come back to guitar, and to my peculiar and particular brand of distortion textures, layering and experimentation. There is an element of “automatic writing” to the work I do currently. The sort of work I have been doing over the past few decades has slowly become more commonplace I suppose. But I always hope to stumble on to something new and compelling.

  Just to discuss one song from the album, “Partial Clearing”, how were those sounds made?

This was made for the choreographer Alexandra Beller. I used an improvised percussive guitar loop that I had made and did some drone guitar stuff using a crazy one-of-a-kind Nicolas Collins distortion box. There is an interlude of a consonant guitar arpeggio It has a few layers of the sort of guitar and electronics work that I perform live.

 Are you working on new material and if so can we expect a new album in the near future?

I’m always pondering new directions and new material. At the moment I’m somewhat torn between pure electronic music, more guitar rock and various hybrids. I’m often a bit slow at codifying and completing longer projects, but I’ll have something out in 2020. I’m also hoping that I will get invited to do some improvised duos and collaborations.

 Also, with your label Trace Element, is it just for your recordings or do you release other artist’s music?

Trace Elements records was founded by me, Ron Spitzer and Andrew Halbreich in around 1980. It originally was set up for our band Tot Rocket, which released two 7" records on it. With the recording of the Western Eyes LP Western Eyes, electronic music composer Nicolas Collins, who produced the record, became involved in the label. Trace Elements released the Collins LP Devil’s Music, a Collins/Poss cassette called Inverse Guitar, and 100 Of The World’s Most Beautiful Melodies, a CD of Collins' duets with musicians such as John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Shelley Hirsch, Christian Marclay, Tom Cora and Elliot Sharp. The label also released my 1986 Sometimes cassette and the debut 7" EP When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water, but is best known for the 1987 release of Band Of Susans' first record, Blessing And Curse, a 12” EP, and Nicolas Collins’s 1992 CD It Was A Dark and Stormy Night. I currently run the label myself, though it’s mostly dormant. The most recent releases have been my two companion solo CDs, Distortion Is Truth and Crossing Casco Bay, both released in late 2002, Settings: Music For Dance, Film, Fashion and Industry, released in the autumn of 2010 and Frozen Flowers Curse The Day, released in 2018.

  Who are some of your favorite current bands and/or musicians?

I like Come and other Thalia Zedek/Chris Brokaw projects. A great New York band called Collapsible Shoulder. The stuff done by Mission of Burma’s Peter Prescott and Roger Miller.  Phill Niblock’s ongoing work. Anything Susan Stenger is involved in. Pan Sonic. Shilpa Ray. Zeena Parkins. Andrea Parkins. Nicolas Collins. Ben Neill.  Guitarist Chris Cochrane’s projects. Kato Hideki.  David Watson. Evans Wohlforth always has something interesting going on. My ex-bandmate Karen Haglof has been doing some nice work. (I’m probably leaving some key persons out.) There is also a whole host of musicians, young and old doing pure electronic music these days. But I’m truly terrible at keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff out there. Most of the gigs I go to involve friends and colleagues.

ace attorney: apollo justice, trucy wright, klavier gavin (i just love this trio so fucking much) and also pearl fey. my favorite villain from ace is probably dahlia and i fucking HATE her as a character but from a writer and consumer’s perspective she’s fucking brilliant and great like hooly shit!!!! harry potter: hands down luna lovegood and also i love ron like i relate to him on a spiritual level yuri!!! on ice: makkachin probably otabek...but i love all the characters. what a precious lot.

DREAM JOB: this is such a conflicting question for me bc sometimes its really hard for me to discern dream in the way everyone else does. people always say dream job as in like what you want to do, mostly without financial concern but in a dream, to me, i am AT LEAST financially stable, which is like a first priority for me (this probably isn’t good but that’s what kind of mindset i have, courtesy of my parents) and like...enjoyment and happiness second kinda???

i do kinda want to be a lawyer but i guess my true dream job is being an author. but just saying it is really like unreal because i don’t have that much confidence in writing and my passions wax and wane really easily and im just a mess as you can probably see

DREAM TRIP: i’d love to visit everywhere tbh but top destinations are japan, germany, and the netherlands (though i do dream of living in the netherlands rather than just visiting)
