Cold - Geralt of Rivia
Relationship: Geralt x gn!reader
Warnings: mild swearing, nothing but fluff

~~~~~
"You're chattering."
"Am not."
Jaskiers snores ripped through the silence of the forest.
You, Geralt and Jaskier made camp not far from the main road. The night air was light, relentless. Despite the crackling of the fire, the air tore right through your covers and into your very bones.
"Mm. Suppose its a squirrel then. Must be dearly regretting not buying the extra skins their wise friend had suggested they buy only two towns over."
"F-fuck off," you shivered. You would've laughed at his Geralt-like attempt at a joke if you weren't so fucking freezing...
"Come here," the gruffness of his voice slices through your regret-riddled thoughts.
"Wh-what?"
He deeply sighs, and moves to hold open his thick fur coat. An invitation. One that any other day you would've had the sense to question.
But you would sacrifice your dignity for warmth tonight.
So you shuffled, albeit clumsily to where he sat, just next to a fallen log. You pretend you don't see the little smirk he makes as you trip and shake your way over to him.
"A-Asshat," you huff as you move to lay down, his arm moving to rest over your waist once you've settled.
You breathe a relieved sigh at the heat. His warmth hugged you tightly, shivers dying down with every stroke of his hand along your spine.
"Mmmthankyou," you sleepily murmur. He kisses the top of your head in response.
"We'll stock up again tomorrow."
His other hand rests lovingly along the side of your face.
"Rest now, little one. I've got you."
The moment Tissaia walked up to the distraught girl, sitting in the remnants of what had been her village, the mage had tried her hardest to close her heart off, to just treat her with a stiff lip and a harsh word, for it was the way mages learned best, in her opinion. Then her footsteps had carefully led her closer, the stench of burned flesh, wood and leather making her inhale with tiny puffs breaths. The moment the young girl had felt a shadow loom over her, she'd looked up with a tear-stained face, eyes red and big and filled with terror. With her tattered clothes barely still covering her body and her skin smeared with dirt, blood and ash, she looked half-alive. And perhaps, going by the look on the girl's face, she would have preferred being among the dead. But it was what was in the palm of her hands that had made Tissaia suck in a breath.
Tissaia swiftly looked around the scorched earth and saw the faint flickering of melted-down armour here and there lying among the people the soldiers had killed before coming to their own demise. There was no normal fire that could have melted a soldier's armour the way it had. No, it demanded another kind of fire, one with flames so heated that the warmth could be felt all the way to the Blue Mountains of Hertch.
With her mouth slightly agape from the shock, she quickly knelt down in front of the girl and rather harshly pulled her closer by her wrists. She turned the girl's palms open to her view, but let them go almost right after. She looked at her own leathered gloves, which had started to melt, leaving a horrible smell behind to mix with the stench of death all around them. Dazed, she stood back up almost immediately, sparing the young girl in front of her another quick glance, only to now be met with a determined and stern expression from the girl. As if she knew what she had done to her.
The realisation of the severity of the situation came as quickly as the heat that suddenly warmed her face and made droplets of sweat dance against her forehead. But Tissaia stayed put, straightened her posture and lifted her chin. She had made up her mind.
With her hand outstretched, she voiced, "Come with me."
The fear and distrust returned to the young girl's face as she stared at Tissaia's hand, before her eyes went back up to the mage's face. The woman had her hair high up in an elegant style, with leathered gloves and boots and a dress hiding beneath a mantel she was sure costed more than her entire village could have afforded.
"Come," Tissaia tutted, sending her a derogatory glare, "Where else would you go now?"
The strange woman's words cut deep, and the girl had to bite her lip to stop it from trembling. It was as if the woman was taunting her with the look in her eyes. As if to say, who do you have left to wait around for?
"Or do you wish for them to find you when they come to see what's happened here?" Tissaia retreated her offered hand and looked down upon the girl, trying her best to not let the intrigue and sympathy show through her eyes. "Follow me." Tissaia turned on her heel, expecting the girl to stand up and follow her, like they always did.
"I would rather die." The young girl spat out her words with a certain kind of venom that surprised Tissaia.
She stopped and inspected the poor thing on the ground; the fabric around her stomach and hip had been caught by flames and revealed the nastiest burns on her skin. The girl sat shivering from her injuries but with her head held high nonetheless. Tissaia tilted her head, "Poor pup, if that didn't kill you, then you'll never die," Tissaia spoke, knowing the young girl had no idea of the knowledge the mage held, or what she'd just done either.
Tissaia looked around at the scorched bodies, "It seems you sacrificed a great deal to hone that power. It would be a waste to let it fizzle out with you. Now follow if you don't want any of this to happen again." Her finger pointed out the destruction around them.
The inner turmoil of the girl was hardly masked from her face. It was clear she was battling thoughts and worries and dealing with guilt and grief all at the same time. But Tissaia wasn't surprised to see the girl stumble to stand on her two feet, for she'd heard her thoughts and the decision made before she'd made the movement to follow. Hot angry tears fell out of her eyes and dropped onto her cheeks.
"And stop crying, there's no room for weakness at Aretuza."
Tissaia landed the first of what would be many blows to Y/N's thick skin, but she knew it was needed in order to make the young girl into a strong and resilient mage. If anything, perhaps the most renowned mage there would ever be, if Tissaia would play her cards right and keep her under her wing. However, she would keep the story of what had happened here, of how she'd burned her hands from a simple touch and how her gloves had melted from even standing near, a secret. For if the Continent learned of a living and breathing mage who had survived using fire magic, the young mage would be a dead woman walking.
*⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
Tissaia had been well aware that each and every step and choice that would be taken next, would have to be thought through in order for this to pan out well. From giving the girl the proper instructions to pairing her up with the right mages to fully hone and explore the depths of her magic. As she pulled the girl along through the cold and windy hallways of Artezua by her upper arm, her brain already racked with strategies and plots. But when a strangled sob escaped from the girl, she realised she was more than just a pawn for the Brotherhood. She was a young mage, hurting, grieving and perhaps utterly terrified, and Tissaia should have known better than to pluck her out of her life so harshly and dump her in her new one without any further explanation. Still, perhaps installing some fear would help keep the young mage quiet about what had happened, about what she could do. It will all be for the greater good, she had thought to herself, one day, the girl would look back and understand.
The minute the pair had left the burned-down village, the girl had been too exhausted to keep up her chaos, and the uneasy heat that she held around her had dissipated. Instead, silent tears started to fall at the realisation that everything would change. Still, the girl had held an everpresent frown on her face and her lips had snarled in hatred. Tissaia could feel the chaos bubbling beneath the girl's chest, even when weakened, and felt the power of it coursing through the young mage's veins. She knew exactly what to do with her.
Tissaia opened the door, led the young girl to her bed and turned back around, leaving no room for questions or coddling before she locked her inside. Immediately she could hear footsteps fast approaching before banging on the door echoed through the halls.
"Let me go, you vile bitch!"
So much for keeping her quiet, Tissaia thought, and immediately silenced the noise with a hushed spell. But three doors down, glancing between the tiniest crack of her door, young mage Yennefer of Vengerberg had seen it all.
*⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
Hours passed and had left your knuckles bruised and tattered from trying to find a way out. The stretching of your burning skin hurt and it was damp from infection, but no pain would ever be as horrible as the breaking of your heart. Your voice was hoarse from all the screaming, so you had taken to kicking the door instead, but when your body had taken over to scream in exhaustion, you had fallen to the floor. As if someone had sensed your surrender, soon the door opened again and a young woman appeared in the doorway, an almost painful apologetic smile on her face as she took you in. Her red hair bounced off her chest as she quickly bent down to your height, her hands outreached. You recoiled at her sudden movement but saw the pain in her eyes double with that reaction.
"I don't know what you have gone through, but I am so sorry that it's caused you such great pain. It's okay now, you're safe here, at Aretuza," Though she tried her best to make you feel at ease, you were wary, "I'm Triss. Is it okay if I can touch your wounds to heal them?"
You glared at her outstretched hands as if the most dangerous insect of the Continent was crawling along her fingers. Heal you... what did that even mean? You'd heard of mages and their powers, but also heard of how they could manipulate the mind and the senses. Was this a trap? Would this woman let you do her bidding with just one touch of her fingers? You still weren't sure why the elegant but stern lady had found you and decided to take you back to her den full of witches. What were their plans for you?
You made a show to look behind and around her, then huffed, "Where are your bandages? Your salves and your ointments?"
The red-haired woman, Triss, only smiled uneasily, "I'm a mage, I use my chaos to heal, watch-" Her thumb hovered over the bruises on your knuckles as they disappeared slowly but surely, only itching slightly, "That was all. I can do it for all of your wounds, if you'd like."
A new wave of shivers crept up your spine at the heated burn of your wounds and you wiped a layer of sweat from your face. Glancing back down at your head, you realised there was no trace of the burn mark whatsoever, as if it hadn't even happened at all.
"It won't leave any scars, I promise," Triss reassured, sensing the unease.
"Then how will I remind myself what happened?"
Triss furrowed her brows," Wouldn't you like to forget?"
"Forget about what? My life? My family?" You raised your voice and pushed yourself to sit against the bed, away from the mage who clearly didn't understand at all. "What happened to them? What-" Suddenly, you stopped and looked up, "Did she send you?"
"Who?"
"That devilish hag?!"
Triss blinked rapidly and stumbled back at your tone, "Tissaia? What's she done to-"
"Thank you, Triss. You're needed elsewhere now." Tissaia loomed in the doorway, hands folded together and that same stiff lip on her face.
"But I haven't even-" Triss shut up and disappeared herself after just a look from her rectoress.
The ticking of Tissaia's heels echoed against your lonely room. She bend down and tightly gripped your chin in her hand, "Are you so bend on dying, weak pup?" She squeezed your chin, "Can't even accept help when it's offered to you?"
"I've learned that help is often offered only when one expects something in return." You did your best to keep your head high, despite the woman's efforts to pull your chin down.
"You're a clever girl, aren't you?" She let go and stood back, sending a half smirk your way before turning serious again. It was as if her eyes showed a sudden unease with the blow she was going to have to deal next, "So clever that you haven't even figured out that you were the one to burn your family to ashes. So naive," She tutted and shook her head in a derogative manner.
"What do you mean?" Your face paled even more at her statement, at what you had worried about but had pushed to the back of your mind during all the agonisingly long hours that had passed.
As if a flick had been switched in Tissaia, she smiled softly, "Oh sweet girl, you have no idea?" She watched the confusion on your face and continued, "There's a great deal of chaos rumbling beneath your skin, itching at it and travelling through the network of your veins. You just had your conduit moment today. They often happen when one's emotions are heightened, when one is in great distress or danger, for example."
"I'm a mage?" You stumbled out, not wanting to believe her but knowing that things suddenly started to make sense. From the unexplainable moments in your life to what had occurred hours ago.
"Some girls turn their siblings into pigs during a fight for their conduit moment, you just had to burn your whole village, didn't you?" The hostile tone returned, as if Tissaia couldn't let herself be softer with you than the others for longer than needed.
"I didn't! They pillaged and ransacked our village! Hurt the women and the children and killed the men. They were going to torch the place!"
"Yet you were the one to make it go boom."
"I wasn't- Surely I couldn't have-" Instead of granting you an answer or some explanation to help you order your thoughts, the woman kept silent to watch you connect the dots right in front of her. Your father had instructed the entire family to lock yourself up in the cellar, but when the pillagers had kicked down the door, slain your father and grabbed your youngest sibling and put a blade through them as if they were but a piece of meat, the only thing you could remember is seeing red. Then flames. Unrelenting tall flames. Then nothing, for a while, until Tissaia had stood in front of you to take your attention away from the destruction around you.
"Your disruption of chaos didn't just cause a ripple, it was a tidal wave," Frustrated, Tissaia grabbed your hands and opened your palms, "You hold a great power that can be dangerous to us all. The Continent will erupt in chaos if they know of your existence, for no young mage has ever lived to see another day after using fire magic. People will try and hunt you down. You are not meant to exist. Your chaos is destructive, it could start wars." She watched the horror on your face, "But it can end wars, too, only if you work on keeping your chaos bottled. But with your lack of control, I doubt that will ever happen-" The sympathy disappeared again, "Unless... you accept my help. I will keep you safe here at Aretuza. I will mentor you and help you control it."
You bit your trembling lip, hating how you were still stuck on the fact you had killed your entire family. Though the woman had previously made fun of your weakness, her eyes were less cold as she looked down on you now.
After a long train of thought, you grumbled, "So what do you expect in return?"
She smiled, giving you an accomplished nod. You were already understanding life as a mage, "To keep it all between us. You have never used fire magic. You survived after your chaos and conduit moment made the pillager's brains simmer out of their eyes."
"And if I don't?"
"Then I won't keep my end of the bargain." She stared at you with a look of finality, making it clear she did not condone any resistance to her offer.
A single nod of your head was enough to satisfy Tissaia, "I will send Triss back and you will accept her help this time."
"What if I don't want the scars to disappear?"
Tissaia examined you, trying to decipher the train of thought that went behind those words,
"Then they'll serve as a great reminder of what happened when you lost control."
*⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
Yennefer walked into Aretuza's dining hall, approaching the first mage she knew and immediately opening her mouth, "They're holding an injured girl hostage."
Annika looked up at her, confused, "The Brotherhood?"
"No, yes, I don't know. I saw Tissaia bring her in, with my own eyes." Yennefer muttered with hatred laced in her voice, still not having found her peace and home within the walls of Aretuza.
"Then surely there must be a reason. Rectoress de Vries would never just-"
"She did it with me too, only shorter. When I first came here." Yennefer clarified and licked her lips, sending dangerous glares at the pair of older mages who she knew had been staring at the deformation of her back.
"Oh-" Sabrina approached, a smirk tugging at her lips, "What are you two gossiping about? Do go on."
And so the rumour had started, making Tissaia catch wind of it before the end of the afternoon. To say the woman was furious was an understatement. All Yennefer of Vengerberg had done since her arrival, had been to make things ten times more difficult for her, refusing to adapt. So, it didn't come to Yennefer's surprise that she was summoned to the rectoress office again. If anything, an accomplished glint in her eyes made it clear to Tissaia that she was happy she had disrupted her plans, even if the girl could not have any idea what they were.
"Sit." Tissaia's stern voice instructed when she heard Yennefer's uneven step enter her quarters. She kept her back towards the girl. "You seem to take a great liking to lighting all the fires I'm trying to put out, do you not?"
"Why are you keeping that girl locked up?"
Tissaia turned around, her eyes narrowed, "Why are you sticking your nose in the business of the Brotherhood? Are you so keen to dig through our dirt, piglet? Do you miss sleeping among those beasts so much that you've turned into one?" She saw how Yennefer angrily nibbled at her bottom lip, clearly hurt by the memories of her past.
"You're keeping her against her will, as you did with me. She's hurt." Yennefer spat back after taking a couple of seconds to recuperate.
"She is delirious from her injuries and her trauma. Triss is with her. Has that quelled your curiosity enough?"
"So that means you did take her involuntarily."
Tissaia locked her jaw in frustration, feeling anger bubbling, "She's safer with us, as you all are. Her chaos needs to be mentored as much as anyone else's." She examined Yennefer's face, sensed the intrigue still in her eyes and tilted her head, "If you're so drawn by her, go fetch her for me." With a look that told Yennefer to get up and leave, Tissaia kept her eyes burning in the back of the young mage's head as she left.
*⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
The itching of your skin moved all over your body, where your burns had previously festered and bled, but where faint scars now coated your skin instead. Your trembling fingers traced the one on your torse and stomach, the bumps and unevenness of them still appearing to the soft touch of your fingertips. Triss had done her best to heal the wounds but leave the scars, without making them too unbearable to look at. You could see it pained the mage to not be able to heal you properly, that your need to hold on to your trauma was greater than the need to heal. Still, she knew that not every mage's conduit moment was smooth sailing, so she had kept her mouth shut and had only looked at you with a calm sense of understanding in her eye.
Suddenly, you felt the air change, felt your head fill with prickles that weren't yours and felt the power in your veins reappear once more, as if your mind had healed together with your wounds and made chaos invite itself back beneath your chest. It elevated your senses and made you hear your heartbeat pump through your ears. But then you noticed; you saw her piercing lilac eyes staring back at you through the crack of your door before she knocked to make herself known. She did not wait for your approval, nor did she seem embarrassed that she had been caught staring. Instead, she seemed determined.
Your eyes watched the girl, from her crooked jaw to the hunchback that made her garments fall unflatteringly around her body. It made Yennefer grow self-conscious. The girl quickly pulled her dress back on her shoulder but felt it slide off again just as fast.
She took a step closer, taking in your burned-down clothes even if you had a fresh garment waiting for you on your bed, "Who are you?"
"I could ask you the same."
Ignoring your question, she took another step forward. She licked her lips, "What happened to you? Why are you here?"
The life in your eyes left as soon as she reminded you of what had happened. Yennefer's stare was intense as her big lilac eyes examined you from head to toe, intrigued by someone who seemed to suffer the same kind of welcome she'd had.
"Did she take you away from your family too?"
Your heart panged and your fingers started to tremble again as if suddenly you could feel the heat that had coursed through them mere hours ago. You felt your chaos flitting all across your body, unable to be controlled. It worried you.
"Step back," You warned, with panic and shattered devastation. If you were to set the whole of Aretuza ablaze, then surely your secret would not be safe anymore.
Yennefer kept idle, staring at your sunken form. She'd been in that position not long ago and though her heart had hardened from her time at Aretuza, together with all the challenges her old life had given her, she could feel her heart break nonetheless.
"It's not me you should fear."
You finally looked up to properly look her in the eyes, sensing the sincere warning.
"What are you not telling me?"
Yennefer licked her lips, "You won't believe me anyway, you're too new. Are you going to try and escape?"
You rose your eyebrows and kept your eyes locked firmly on hers. Yennefer found solace in the fact you hadn't gazed at her deformities more than once, just to acknowledge them and then get on with it. Usually, people's eyes would linger on those more than on her own set of eyes, begging to be looked at.
Her words made a bundle of thoughts swarm through your head. You wanted to leave this place, yes, but where would you go without anyone left alive? Without anyone to care for you? You didn't even know to what part of the Continent Tissaia had transported you to. But as you let all those insecurities fill you up, you realised one more grave reminder; if you were to run, you would be left without the safety the rectoress had promised you. If she were to find out you had left and broken your deal, she could very well send the whole Continent after you simply for still being alive after what you'd done.
Defeated, you sighed, "No."
Yennefer grew impatient and now fully closed the distance as she stood right in front of you on your bed, "Giving up already?."
"I might be new, but I know that Aretuza was designed to imprison its students," You repeated, void of hope and motivation, feeling nothing more but hollow.
"What a backbone you have."
"Then what are you still doing here?"
Within a blink, you stood face to face with the girl, your hands palmed into fists.
Finally, Yennefer's eyes softened as they looked into yours, so up close. The trauma and the terror were evident to her. Whatever you had gone through, she seemed to understand. Her eyes flashed across your face, across the crease between your brows, the dip beneath your lips and the lashes on your eyes. She saw the dirt and the smeared ash on your cheeks, but as she glanced into your eyes again, she felt a power tugging at her insides. She found a certain kind of wisdom in your irises and felt a sense of peace as you kept your gaze on her. There was a switch that flicked within her, something out of her control, something to do with her chaos, she could tell. It started to coarse through her body, making her ears pop and her skin tingle. She could feel herself grow more powerful than she'd ever had before. The feeling was ecstatic, and she closed her eyes momentarily to let herself drown in it. It was as if she was floating. Then she looked back to you still standing mere inches away from her face.
"I'm Yennefer," She softly muttered,
"Yennefer of Vengerberg."
Wisteria
A/N: hey-o, back at it again with a late valentines day piece because my brain loves possessive Yennefer.
Pairing: Yennefer of Vengeberg  x Reader
Words: ~750
Summary: Yennefer has planned a lovely evening for you two this Valentine's day, but Philippa seems bent on causing trouble for her possessive sister-in-arms.
________________________________
The stone hallways of the lodge echoed with your footsteps as you returned from dinner. A small smile lay gently on your lips as you made your way toward your room, to get ready. Most mages didn’t really care too much about the minor holidays, so many come to pass when you live for decades upon decades. But then again Yennefer wasn’t like most mages.
You and Yennefer had been together for just a decade now, a short time from a mage’s perspective, but still, every holiday feels like the first. The giddy rush of having someone by your side for the holiday of love coursed through you like adrenaline.
You promised you’d meet her just as soon as you got into something more comfortable. You had just stepped out of your room, wrapped up in a delicate robe when you were interrupted.
“My my… I haven't seen you dressed up like that around here before..”
You sighed, something less weary and more annoyed, “hello, Philippa… I thought you'd be at the library,” you commented as you turned to her, looking into the ribbon that covered her eyes. “I also thought you couldn’t see”
“A mage of everyone should know that eyes are only one way to see,” she commented, a sly smile on her lips and she reached out to touch the soft fabric. “Hmmm, what material… It feels like Skellige’s finest…”
“Yen got it for me… she knows I miss the area,” you explained with pride, “just like I know that you’re only doing this to rile her up. What did she do this time?” you said with a half-heartedly amused smile.
She grinned as her fingers gently tugged on a curl of your hair, “She’s stolen a collection of my rare books. Only one set like it in the whole continent…”
You shook your head and laughed a bit, “you two and your petty squabbles… you’re like sisters that steal each other's toys.”
“PHILIPPA!” You heard your beloved yell from down the hall, no doubt wondering what was taking so long.
You felt little vines of Wisteria climb up your feet, wrapping possessively around your ankles as Yennefer drew closer. She looked absolutely enraged and her heels clacked menacingly against the tile floor. Her eyes glowed gently as magic welled up in her palms.
“Hmm, I believe that’s my cue… I’ll be seeing you around, Y/n,” Philippa whispered to you with a grin and a kiss on the cheek before quickly fluttering off in her owl form.
“That skeeving…” Yennefer grumbled under her breath until you caught her cheek in your hand. Anger instantly ebbed away as her violet eyes softened.
“Calm down, my flower… you’ve scared her off for now,” you said with a chuckle. “You know she only does this to mess with you. This is why you can't keep taking her books…”
“She knows you're off limits, she knows you’re MINE!” Yen yelled pointedly down the hall, being met with hooting laughter from down the hall. The thin vines around your ankles tightened snugly around you, responding to the sorceress's intense emotions.
You only shook your head, leaning down to delicately unwind the plant, “Well I’m going to your room, you can either come with me or you can go smite your sister in arms…” You said, not even waiting for her answer as you continued making your way down the hall.
“I… “ Yen groaned momentarily, mourning the opportunity, as she followed quickly in your footsteps. “You’re the only one who can sway me like that…”
You threw a smile back at her, shrugging your robe a little lower on your shoulders, “I know; I do my best not to abuse it.” you chuckled as you stopped at her doorway.
She slid in front of you and took your hand as the door pushed open, revealing an utterly romantic sight. The books that used to cover the desk and floors were all neatly stacked on the bookshelves. Candles glowing with pink light floated about the room, casting a soft and loving glow over the large bed.
You grinned as you stepped inside, poking the nearest candle and watching it bob and move around as if in water. “My flower,  this is amazing… I can’t imagine how much energy this took though.”
“It's all worth it for you, my dear…” she said with a smile- one that quickly turned mischievous- “Now come and show me exactly what it is you changed into so I can get you out of it even quicker.”
𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐊𝐢𝐝
(𝐃𝐚𝐝!𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐭 𝐱 𝐈𝐧𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧!𝐊𝐢𝐝!𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫/𝐎𝐜)
Tumblr media
A/N: I have rewritten this authors note three times and I’m so close to just giving up oh my GOD. Anyway. Hello !! This is my first fic on here and honestly it was completely unintentional !! This idea has been rotting in my brain for days so I figured I would write it and here we are. It’s a little dark ??? read the warnings before proceeding. Tell me if you guys would want a part two to this bc honestly I have ZERO plans for this fic and it just kinda happened so I could totally do that if it’s wanted. Geralt might be a little ooc ? but yk what it’s like 20 or so years after raising Ciri so idc. ALSO ALSO I labeled this a Reader/Oc bc I’m toying with making it a oc story. It’s written in second person POV but I kinda want to give reader grey eyes and white hair (bc character things *cough I haven’t decided what they’re going to be as for the inhuman part cough* and also easy to project onto bc they’re bland yk?) and I was maybe thinking of giving them a name? So tell me if you guys would be ok/would want that, ok? OK GOOD HOPE YOU ENJOYYY [A/N2: I’m 99% sure the production of this post killed me and I’m still not happy with the lay out. I am so sorry. Future fics will be better I promise.]
Warnings: starvation, death threats, injury, violence? (If I missed anything tell me and I’ll put it here)
The spring breeze was chilly as Geralt entered the next town on Roach. He was hoping to find a place to stay for the night and possibly a job. He had heard rumors about their being a monster in the woods around here from the town over, although they weren’t very specific he figured he could check it out just in case there really was some coin to be made here.
Geralt was wrong. There was no place to stay and there was no coin to be found here. There was however, a very, *very,* tiny thief.
You had seen him from behind the corner of a building. His back turned to you and from his belt a tiny leather sack was hanging. It may have had coin in it, you hoped it had food in it, but you wouldn’t know until you *had* it.
Once his head was turned you sprinted out from where you had been watching the woman and snagged the pouch from his belt. Not one second later your shirt choked you as you were yanked backwards and your feet left the ground. Instinctively you curled up, clutching the pouch in your hands so hard your knuckles blanched white.
Geralt was… unsure of what he was looking at. There was you. In his hand. Held up to eye level by the back of your shirt and cloak like one would hold a kitten by the scruff of their neck. You couldn’t have been more then four or five, but it was hard to tell. You were so dirty he couldn’t tell what color your hair was or if you were a boy or a girl. On top of all that you looked sickly. Pale with sunken eyes and hollowed out cheeks, your legs and feet were bony and he noticed how a couple of your fingers were crooked, clearly having been broken before and didn’t heel correctly.
You were pouting at him, but he assumed it was meant to be more of a glare. He could see the fear in your eyes. You were so small…
Geralt signed. Lambert was right, maybe he *had* gone soft since he adopted Ciri.
He set you down on your feet and crouched down to your level. “What’s your name?” He asked as soothingly as possible. Your eyes were fixed unblinkingly on the ground in front of your feet. You were stiff as a board and if Geralt couldn’t hear the almost imperceptible huffing of your breath he would’ve assumed you stopped breathing.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” he reassured cocking his head to the side to try and catch your eye. “Do you have a name?”
Your lip trembled for a moment and you refused to look at him. A few more seconds of silence passed before Geralt signed for a second time and got to his feet. Your eyes flicked to him for a moment before looking back at the dirt. He looked at you, still completely frozen in fear, before he made a final decision and lifted you from the ground once again.
You didn’t struggle as he lifted you from under your armpits and rested you on his hip. You found footing on his armor but didn’t move after that. Your breathing sped up and he could feel the frantic pounding of your heart and put a hand on your back in attempt to sooth you. “You look like you could use some food.”
You where standing in front of a brown horse while the white haired man fished around in his saddle bags. You leaned away slightly, side eyeing it nervously as the horse brought its nose to your cheek and sniffed. It whinnied in your ear and bobbed it’s head.
“Easy Roach,” the man said and pat its neck. He crouched down to your eye level and held out his hand to you, he was holding a biscuit. “I’ll trade you.” He said and you thought the corner of his lip might have twitched upwards for a moment.
Your mouth watered. *Food! He has food!* Your eyes were big as saucers and solely focused on the thin biscuit in his hand. You pried one of your hands from where they were suck in the coin pouch and hesitantly began to reach out.
You stopped, looking Geralt in the eyes for a moment. Geralt nodded, silently telling you that it was ok. Quickly you snatched the biscuit from him and dropped the coin pouch to stuff your face with both your hands. Slowly Geralt reached out and took it from where it lay at your feet and watched at you devoured the honey biscuit he had given to you.
He lifted the pouch and examined it, there were ten tiny holes in it now. He would have to get a new one. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed you had stopped eating. You were coughing with your mouth closed, your face twisting in pain.
“Hurts…” was all you said and touched your throat. Geralt was a little taken aback by the sound of your voice. Strained, croaky, and like it hadn’t used in months. He handed a canister of water to you and you drank a couple sips eagerly.
He sat down on the ground in front of you. After drinking you didn’t go back to eating but instead cast a rather upset look at the honey biscuit in your hand. “You can soak it in the water to make it softer if you’d like.”
The next few minutes went by with you soaking your biscuit in water and trying to choke down the rest of it, sitting down the process. Geralt studied you as you did all this.
The more he looked the more you seemed to shrink. You were entirely to skinny and your clothes to big for you. The way you where sitting allowed him to see the bottoms of your feet, they were so dirty they might as well have just been black and had open wounds the bled crimson. Those would be infected if nothing was done about them, it must’ve hurt to walk. Every couple of bites you would cough, choke, and gag, before chugging some water and continuing to eat.
You had noticed him staring, glared, and shuffled so your back faced him.
“What to tell me your name now?” Geralt asked. You glared at him over your shoulder for a moment, then went back to your biscuit. “Will you let me bandage your feet?”
Again you looked at him over your shoulder, but your eyes where softer now. More surprised and curious looking. Geralt took some stuff out of Roach’s saddle bag once again and when he looked back at you, you where facing him and looking up at him with a curious gaze. He gave a slight smile as he crouched in front of you and with a wet rag began to wipe off your feet.
You winced and tried to yank your foot away but Geralt had a firm hold on your ankle. “It’ll sting, but it’s better then being infected. Hold still.”
And you did. You stayed perfectly still and let Geralt wipe off the dirt and bandage your feet. Once he was done and put his stuff away he picked you up once again and carried you like he had before. Your heart was beating just as fast and you were just as stiff as earlier.
“Do you have a home I can bring you back to? Parents we could find?” He asked. He felt your grip on his shoulder tighten. He hummed but didn’t ask anything else.
He carried you to an inn and when he entered he got many strange and alarmed looks, but it was nothing he wasn’t used to. He went up to the man at the bar. “Excuse me,” he said, you shifted in his hold to peak over your shoulder, and the man lifted his gaze from the cup he was cleaning.
Immediately his eyes blew wide, the cup he was holding hit the floor and shattered as he stumbled back into the shelves of alcohol and sink behind him. He pointed a shaky finger at the witcher. “Get out,” he said shakily, trying to find his voice.
Geralt opened his mouth speak again but the man beat him to it.
“Take that foul *thing* out of here!” He shouted catching everyone’s attention.
You squirmed in Geralt’s gasp like you were trying to melt into his armor. A sudden pain shot through his shoulder. Like tiny knives had pierced his skin. He didn’t let the pain show on his face, he could feel your tiny heart beating more rapidly then he though possible.
From behind him he heard chairs clatter to the ground and swords being drawn. “You heard him,” one of them men who had drawn his sword said. “Get it out of here.”
“Before we kill it.” Added the other man menacingly. You had frozen solid in his arms, he could feel you short, panicked breathing against his neck. Your eyes wide but staring at nothing. The men inched closer.
Geralt held up his free hand and the men stopped. “We’ll leave.” Was all he said before turning and make his way out of the inn.
He walked you back to Roach, you were still the entire time. The claws in his shoulder were beginning to burn. But he didn’t do anything until you reached Roach.
There he gently maneuvered your fingers free from his shoulder and set you down on the ground. There was a long moment of silence.
“You don’t have a family do you?” He asked. Looking at your feet, you shook your head.
“Or a place to live?” You shook your head again.
“Do you have a name?” He asked. You nodded your head, he waited a for a moment but when you didn’t speak he continued.
“You can’t stay here can you?”
You shook your head.
“How would you like to come with me then?”
You looked up at him for the first time since he picked you up last. Your mouth parted in surprise. Quickly you closed it and gave him a single nod as your answer.
“Well then,” he said as he quickly tied off the wound in his shoulder. “We best get moving.”
With that he picked you up and set you on Roach and the two of you left town.
Yennefer’s Body
Yennefer of Vengerberg x fem!reader
(18+) Minors please DNI!
Tumblr media
Sleep came to her quickly these days, allowing Yennefer’s precognitive dreaming to take over every moment of her unconscious existence. The ability had not come to her easily at first, but after decades of tedious practice it had proven to be immensely useful. Waking from these dreams of the future was, however, always disorienting and tricky.
It was not uncommon for local bards to sing tales of less experienced mages becoming stuck inside of their dreams. Some stories even claimed to require another mage's spell to break the dreamy trance. But Yennefer was not going to become one of those tall tales, at least not tonight.
No, tonight cool ocean air drifted lazily over The Great Sea and across the clear night sky, eventually making its way up toward the cracked window near the place where Yennefer now slept. Her eyes flickered wildly behind her closed lids and all at once, Yennefer could feel herself waking from the strangest dream she'd had yet.
Her mind was groggy and her eyes squinted against the moonlight that illuminated her chambers. She'd never seen this far into her future before- Into their future.
How had Yennefer met her? She couldn't remember that part now. Instead, her mind eagerly played back to her the parts she could remember, eyes shutting slowly once more against the chill of the night air.
She could recall the moment she realized who Y/n was meant to become to her. She could recall the moment Y/n grasped the intensity of her feelings. She could recall, but chose to skip over, the turmoil that immediately followed Y/n's understanding. Instead, Yennefer's mind settled on a more amorous scene she'd experienced with this puzzling Cidarian girl.
Wrapped in the mystery of what she'd dreamt of, endorphins slowly washed over Yennefer's body where she laid, her sleepy mind wandering away from her. Never before had someone been able to elicit such intensity from her- A curious mix of electricity tinged with tranquility that spread like wildfire through every nerve in her body, rendering her attempts at stringing the memories together completely useless.
She had never been touched in the ways Y/n had kissed and caressed her in her dream. Yennefer felt as if she'd been trying to devour her fully.
Roaring heat lingered around Yennefer's head and above her chest, fogging the last bit of lucidity her mind could muster. She carefully slid the heavy wool blanket she'd been nestled under away from her and uncoiled her body slowly in the silvery moonlight that filtered into the room through her window.
Almost unconsciously, her hands began to wander lightly across her now exposed skin, and she silently savored the delicate pressure each fingertip created. Traversing each curve with ease, Yennefer's fingertips tenderly grazed against the top of her full breasts and slid slowly toward her nipples, which responded excitedly to her gentle touch.
She pinched lightly only for a moment, just as Y/n had in her dream. Goosebumps jumped to life across her sensitive skin, and she relished in the sensation.
Slower still, Yennefer's fingertips slid gently over her rounded breasts and down toward her core leaving a wave of tiny raised bumps in their wake. They carved a path between the moonbeams that now danced across every curve of her naked body. The moonlight lapped at every inch of her greedily, just as she knew Y/n would someday, and illuminated her neck, her chest, her navel, and all that lay below.
"What good may come of this?" her mind challenged listlessly, attempting to tether her to reality. None, probably. Only more longing, perhaps. Yennefer could not care at this moment, as the pulsating between her thighs had grown louder at her mind's suggested denial.
Yennefer's fingertips hovered above the spot just over her navel. She realized then that the palms of her hands felt moist, having actually sweat at the vision of Y/n touching her. Truthfully, she hadn't been sure she could still do that after years of enchanting her body with various spells, but she’d heard rumors that some emotions could still elicit such a human response, should they be felt intensely enough. Now she knew the rumors were true.
Spreading her legs just wide enough to fit one hand comfortably between them, Yennefer traced a straight line downward with her right hand, toward the source of her insistent longing. She gasped audibly as her hand made contact with the tender skin it found there.
The folds of her body felt delicate and so sensitive to her touch, but she wouldn't let this deter her from venturing further. With only her index finger, she traced a single vertical line along the center crease, slowly stroking up and then down, parting the skin only a fraction as she moved.
Yennefer took a slow, deep breath in to steady herself, noticing how the salt tinged air danced across her lips and tongue deliciously. Y/n had been so tender and loving in the dream, and she desperately wanted to relive that moment now.
She uncurled a second finger, granting it permission to join the first's careful caressing. As they traced their path along her crease, she applied a bit more pressure, pushing just a fraction deeper. She realized then that the moisture she'd felt on her palms was not contained to just one place, and she relished in the discovery.
Fully indulging in her lust, Yennefer mirrored the memory of Y/n's fingers with the motion of her own, submerging both fully into her wetness in search of the spot Y/n had stroked so attentively in her dream.
Suddenly, she knew she'd found it. Holding both fingers there, Yennefer began to draw small circles above the most sensitive bit, just as Y/n had.
Yennefer's lips parted and she let out a low whimper as her circling fingers pressed harder into the spot. She'd never made a sound like that before, and the surprise of it brought her mind back to her for a brief moment.
Still, she could feel electricity pulsing through her body, her fingers unwilling to resist their pursuit for pleasure. Yennefer helplessly descended back into the depths of her lurid memory.
The sensation of Y/n's soft, wet tongue kissing and licking at her body haunted her every thought. She clung desperately to the dream, hoping for it to never fade away.
With her left hand, Yennefer gripped the blanket she'd cast aside earlier, as if to ground herself. The images now playing behind her eyelids coupled with the ceaseless assault her fingers carried out on her soaking crease sent her even further into dizzying descent.
As if possessed by the memory of her dream, Yennefer's fingers slipped down her dripping folds and directly into the starved opening that called to them from below. Her body suddenly begged her to hasten.
She pressed both fingers deeply into herself. A guttural moan escaped from the back of her throat and resonated against the stone walls of her chambers, the sultry sound of it encouraging her to move more swiftly.
Her motion became automatic, in and out, deeper, and deeper still. Yennefer's moans were coming at regular intervals, her mind racing at the memory of Y/n's gentle mouth and tongue. Suddenly, as if a spell had been cast against her, the pleasure she'd spent so long building rapidly overwhelmed her senses, reaching across every nerve of her aching body from her toes to her fingertips.
All at once, euphoria crashed over her like waves against the Cidarian Coast and silence enveloped her, rendering her unable to hear even the sound of her own breathing. Yennefer's body pulsated rapidly, hot and wet with pleasure at the memory of Y/n.
Gradually, Yennefer returned to herself, realizing she'd completely ruined the blanket she'd been clinging to.
May You Be Forever Weary
warnings | reader is a major coward
a/n | idk why i have so much trouble writing yennefer, shes my favorite character, im so scared to fuck up her character :( i feel like this is one i might have to rewrite at some point, i kinda just wanted to get the idea out there
****
Yennefer gave you your first kiss. Just two children, really, finally finished with your training at Aretuza, hopeful and happy to begin your careers as mages. The once shy woman with raven hair pulled you to the side with such confidence, cupped your face, and connected your lips with hers.
The two of you had been inseparable since that day. You were a team, and wherever she went, you followed.
This led you to the Battle of Sodden Hill. You had no experience in war, but you knew enough. And you knew you had to support your lover, so you did just that.
The battle almost took your life. Your energy drained too fast, and useless without your magic, you had to flee. Though the terror only let you get so far before you ended up hidden, but not safe.
You stayed there, hands over your ears to drown out the sounds of battle.
Yennefer found you afterwards. She gave you a once over before her face froze up and she turned and walked away.
She flinched when you called her name, but she did not turn. Somehow you knew she wouldn’t. When she reached the edge of the woods you grabbed her arm.
Her voice was hoarse as she yelled. Though you desperately wanted to know what she was saying, you couldn’t understand her, the words simply weren’t processing. You had never seen her this angry, this broken.
No words came from you, despite your efforts. You weren’t sure if they would have done any good. You let your sisters die, their efforts killed them while you ran and hid.
Yennefer didn’t let you get a word in, when she had nothing left to say, she opened a portal and disappeared.
You stayed behind to clean up the field, to bury the bodies of your fellow mages. Not that it made up for your cowardice, but you felt the need to help.
You wandered for a while afterward. Never knowing where you’d sleep if you’d eat. You found work occasionally when there was energy to spare.
The worst part was, you couldn’t even blame her. You’d come so far together and you crumbled under pressure. You loved her and she left.
𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞... and fell around her like a curtain, tickling your bare chest as the mage above you admired the view. The corner of her mouth twirled upwards into a challenging grin as the rapid beating of your heart fell in rhythm with hers. But where she welcomed the feeling and longed for more, you froze underneath her in return as you felt her touch against the scarred burn marks, which you had refused to get rid of during your ascension. Without your scars, there would no longer be a reminder of who you were before and the life you had led. Yennefer felt the rough and tattered skin underneath her fingertips and was reminded of the few threads you had let loose about your past through the years. Even if you had never told her what had happened, at least not in detail, she counted it as a victory that you let her see the remains of your past, of everything you had buried deep within yourself. Aretuza had approved of your request to keep some of your scars, only if you would get rid of those that would be in view of the lords and ladies you were going to advise. In their eyes, it wasn’t proper for a mage to look battered and bruised, like the brutes of the Continent. Your scars would only distract and take away the illusion of your elegance and graceful knowledge. You had agreed to the compromise, knowing that no one would ever see the scars from that day forward, except for yourself. And Yennefer, as it seemed.
It was as if the sudden cold breeze that travelled into the room and made you shiver had pulled you back to her. Her warm breath tickled against your neck as she slowly placed a chaste kiss right where she could feel your heartbeat pick up even more. She smirked and nibbled at the flesh against your collarbone when she felt your breathing fasten by your rising chest flushed against her own bare skin. Feeling her breasts against your own, however, did nothing to ease your mind. You wanted this. You had so for years. In all truth, there would never be a living day where you wouldn't want to be Yennefer's whole world, as she had been yours for as long as you could remember. But it gnawed on you that perhaps Yennefer didn't want you as badly as you had yearned and longed for her. She was the most enchantingly beautiful woman you had ever known, although you had thought so even before the change during the ascension, and knew that she could have a different man, or woman, in her bed each day if she wanted. If the renowned and skilled Witcher Geralt of Rivia wasn't able to keep her around, then how could you be more interesting to her? Besides, Yennefer of Vengerberg had never been shy about her body and led her life with a certain sensuality of which she knew the effect it had on the people that met her. What if you were just another night of fun for her, nothing more, nothing less? Then again, if that was all this would ever be, couldn't you just be greedy and take the offer currently presented to you on a golden platter?
"You think too much," She mumbled into your hair as her lips planted a kiss behind your ear, "You'll find you'll enjoy yourself much more if you just give in." She chuckled lazily, and you wondered if she was too drunk for you to let this go on.
But what did she mean? Give in to what? To Yennefer's fingertips softly grazing over your nipples and making their way further down? Or to the magnetic pull you had felt around her for years? One thing was certain; there was no going back, and things would change drastically whether this moment would be regretted or not. You cursed the bottles of brandy and apple cider you had torn through together when you tasted the sweet liquor on Yennefer's tongue as it slipped between your lips, softly massaging with your own.
"I'll take good care of you." She mumbled against your lips, her voice dripping with arousal and lust, but was alarmed when her wrist was clenched tightly by you. She retreated and those big, violet eyes looked down at you in worry. It should have been clear to you then and there, that you too were well past tipsy when you didn't look away under her stare like you normally would. Instead, you looked back into her softened eyes, those eyes that felt like a breeze travelling through a field of lavender on a Spring morning, but the blazing storm clashing against Aretuza's walls as well.
"Do you want me?"
There it was; the quiver in her voice that signalled she felt as small as she had on those first few nights at Aretuza. With a touch as soft as honey, the hand that wasn't locked by your grip found its way to yours, where her thumb grazed a lazy pattern on the back of your hand. Her touch was feathery and it amazed you how gentle your normally so outspoken, headstrong and temperamental friend was. That surprise wasn't fair of you, for you had seen past the layers years ago. You knew it was there, that soft side, but you were too intoxicated by the alcohol in your system and too addicted to her touch and attention to realise she needed your reassurance more than anything in this moment. And perhaps even too distracted to realise that for Yennefer, this was different. This wasn't a passionate night to let loose with someone she had no emotional attachment to. This was you, and she would take her time showing you how much you truly meant to her. But right now, she wanted and needed you to say it out loud. To grant her proof that she hadn't been delusional each time you two had left. Did you feel the same ache in your heart every time she left you? But, admitting it out loud was a leap far too big for you, at least for right now, seeing as you were afraid you'd spill all of your heart's secrets if you started.
Yennefer's lips parted slightly in worry as her eyes quickly wandered around the room to the table of empty cups and glasses. She wasn't too far gone, she knew how to handle her liquor, and perhaps you weren't either, but maybe she could play it off as if she were, as if this was but a mere drunken mistake, just to protect her heart in case she had misread things and you would reject her or look at her differently come morning. There was no one Yennefer would rather have in her arms than you, but she would never open her heart to even entertaining herself with the idea of it, seeing as she was fairly certain that there was no epic love waiting for her in this life or any of the next. Not even a Djin's wish had been able to grant her the dream to finally be of importance to someone. To love and to care and to protect, and to get all of it in return in thousandfold. But if she could just only show you how much you meant to her during this supposed drunken night, then shouldn't she just take the chance?
Her words had already vanished in the air and you felt as if too much time had passed to answer her now. Surely the way you looked at her was an answer of its own, right? Your hands travelled up her thighs that had you trapped in your place beneath her and rested comfortably on the curve of her hips. With a slight squeeze on her skin and a pull of your hands, Yennefer realised what you wanted her to do. Her hips rolled and at even the smallest touch of friction, a gasp escaped her mouth, followed by a low moan. When her lips parted and her raven locks fell in front of her face once more, you didn't close your eyes but looked up at her and felt your heart want to break through your ribcage, needing to remember this forever. You fell into a blissful haze, no longer being led by your inhibitions.
That night, Yennefer's body glued to yours was the only thing on your mind, not the inevitable aftermath or the thought that the same night that was making both your hearts explode, would also be the reason why they would shatter into a million pieces years later.
☾ ⋆*·゚:⋆*·゚:⠀ *⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
The nasty smells of animal carcasses had now been replaced by flesh cooking above an open fire. Night had fallen and after a long day of preparations, everyone could do with a filled stomach and a pint of ale. Yennefer had shut herself out from everything today and had not spoken a word ever since you had grabbed her heart and squeezed long enough until it had splashed and splattered. She had done her best to evade each conversation and shut down small talk with anyone around her, but it seemed that there was no avoiding people anymore if she wanted a plate of food.
She had grabbed the plate that was offered to her by one of the men standing above the pot of boiling beans with potatoes. She withheld a scowl when it made a distasteful sound as it fell against her plate. It had been ages since she'd had a poor man's meal like this, but she couldn't care less now that she felt the way she did. She wasn't even that hungry anyway. She sat to the side on one of the logs where she could silently absorb what was going on around her, but she wasn't granted her peaceful meal when Triss landed on a seat next to her. The redhead's slender fingers pried her piece of meat apart and gave Yennefer the other. Yennefer dipped her head in a silent thank you, but didn't want to give the woman next to her a reason to start a conversation.
However, it seemed that Triss didn't need one, for she opened her mouth before she had even tasted anything off her plate, "Last time I ate this robust was when I was helping a Witcher. We had set up camp somewhere in a valley for the night and when we couldn't-"
Yennefer let out a big sigh and didn't hide how annoyed she was by the intrusion of her peace. Triss stopped, smiled bashfully and somewhat regretfully, and turned to focus on the plate on her lap. They ate in silence without another word being exchanged. Yennefer tried her best to gracefully pry some meat off the bone without making it too messy and quickly found out it would be better to just leave the questionable mixture of beans and potatoes alone.
When they were both as good as finished, Triss nibbled on her lower lip. Was she going to put herself between both her friends? One thing was certain, she would forever regret it if she could have been the one to mend things between you. It was childish and unnecessary to be on such terms before a big battle, but perhaps the same stress and pressure everyone was feeling, had been too much for you both and had caused you to fight and handle things irrationally.
What it had been about, she wasn't too sure, though she could take a wild guess, she could only sense that it involved a lot of emotion and held heavy importance to both of you, going by the atmosphere she had walked in on.
"Y/N, is she-"
"I don't want to talk about her." Yennefer shut her down immediately.
Triss opened her mouth in protest and furrowed her eyebrows. Sure, everyone knew of Yennefer's temper, but she had never lashed out on her like this over something she wasn't even involved in. Though, perhaps that was exactly why she had lashed out.
"Listen, I don't want to come between you two but I really-"
"Then don't." Yennefer's head shot sideways and her lilac eyes sent daggers at Triss, who in return pursed her lips.
"Why would you part ways the way you did? We could be dead tomorrow, Gods, even before the sun rises again!" Triss' empathetic doe-eyes softened and begged Yennefer to listen to her. Yennefer didn't have it in her to crush her friend's kind spirit once more and kept her thoughts to herself, and instead pushed herself up. "Go find Y/N, and this time, listen to what she has to say instead of shutting her out again. Be reasonable for once, Yen. You'll be left all alone if you continue to treat people the way you do. Y/N won't stick around forever."
Yennefer turned around with a sneer on her lip. Triss had hit her right where it hurt the most. Alone... wasn't she already? Hadn't you already distanced yourself from her?
"Having someone around has only ever resulted in disappointment."
"Yennefer!" Triss spluttered but watched the raven-haired mage walk off nonetheless.
Yennefer's quick steps were adamant to get her out of there immediately, but a voice made her stop in her tracks.
"The ale won't disappoint you, that much I can promise." Tissaia held a tankard outreached in front of her to take, an invitation to sit with her as a soft smile tried to coax her to accept the offer.
Not wanting her rectoress to sense the weakness that had occurred mere seconds before, Yennefer straightened her posture and accepted the drink. She sighed defeatedly, "Ah, why not? We should enjoy it while we can. It's the first thing Nilfgaard will destroy."
"Must you always be so fatalistic?"
"You'll find that it's my most admired quality," Yennefer all but huffed, earning a snort and a shake of the head from the woman next to her. The two turned to each other with amusement glinting evidently in their eyes.
The moment faded and Tissaia cleared her throat, "We both know there's more to you than meets the eye. You just have a habit of not letting anyone see what truly lies beneath."
It was true, Yennefer hadn't only been bottling her chaos for years, but had managed to master bottling her feelings, emotions and all of her inner turmoil as well.
Yennefer ignored her and took a sip of the ale. She felt the warmth of the alcohol slide down her throat, wrapping around her like a welcoming but prickly woollen blanket in the cold of the night. It burned, but more satisfying than the lump she had tried to swallow down a while back.
"What's the matter?" Tissaia turned to her, worry and intrigue etched into her features. Not shooting back a witty reply was foreign for Yennefer. Tissaia tried to get through Yennefer's blockade, to hear her thoughts, to see her worries, but the mage had sealed them off expertly.
"Besides possibly coming to our ends soon?" Yennefer turned to the woman beside her with an amused grin on her face, but Tissaia could see the turmoil swarming through her violet pools.
"Are you ready then? To die?"
The question didn't catch Yennefer off guard at all, for she knew her former rectoress always liked a direct approach. She had been on the receiving end of that bluntness for years, after all. And although it had crushed her at first, for all she wanted as an unwanted and unloved child was just some love and recognition, she was happy it had made her tough enough to overcome each obstacle she'd had to face so far.
Without hesitation, Yennefer spoke, "Yes. I've lived two or three lifetimes already."
Tissaia gave her a knowing look, "But you haven't been satisfied in any of them."
Yennefer felt her throat tighten and her chest ache as she thought of all that had happened in those lifetimes. Of the dreadful years at Court, of the ache of not having the person she longed for most around. She took another sip of the ale and felt some of the weight lift off her shoulders, "I've tried. But I've got no legacy to leave behind. No family, no...Nothing worth staying alive for." Yennefer looked off into the distance and watched the shadows of the people around the fire dance against the walls of the Keep. She hated herself for needing to cast the memory of you aside like that, as if you had no value to her. She knew better though, and she knew she couldn't dwell on the empty feeling she felt, not tonight. "It's time to accept that life has no more to give."
Tissaia looked down and softly shook her head, swirling the ale in her tankard absentmindedly as her thoughts wandered off. It pained her to hear one of her dearest students seem so unhappy. In fact, it pained her to see both of you this way. Tissaia wasn't stupid. She knew about everything.
She grabbed Yennefer's underarm softly, but tugged at the fabric of her dress to give her words more impact, "You have so much left to give... and there is so much you have yet to receive. If you can just open your eyes."
With those words, she left Yennefer to ponder as she disappeared into the crowd of drunk people trying to drink their worries away and celebrate what could be their last night.
☾ ⋆*·゚:⋆*·゚:⠀ *⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
"What are you sulking about?"
You heard her before you noticed her, but she appeared not long after out of the shadows, a tankard of ale in her hands and the smell of the liquid on her breath as well.
Tissaia's voice held a hint of amusement as she softly bumped your arm and brought the cup of ale to her lips. You were leaning against the cold brick wall, looking out over the people drinking and having fun on what could be one of their last nights- one of your last nights.
You grunted and shrugged, "Life."
Tissaia let out a dry chuckle, for she could not imagine a better fit than two of her favourite students. You usually weren't as pessimistic as Yennefer was, but it humoured her how you perfectly complimented the other mage and her mood this night.
"What about it?" She leaned against the wall beside you and followed your line of sight.
"How it's not as I had imagined it to be."
Tissaia's amusement disappeared when she noticed you weren't being sarcastic or overly dramatic; you were speaking from the heart, from a heart that was shattered. Seeing you were going to vent, she kept her mouth shut.
"-I've had no freedom, no perfect family...not even one grande lover."
"But you had a chance at life. Multiple, to be exact. That's more than the young girl I found between the ashes that morning could have ever imagined."
Silence washed over you and your old mentor. Tissaia made a move to bring the cup back to her lips when she realised you probably needed to loosen up and let go of your turmoil more than she did.
You kindly pushed her hand away, "I shouldn’t. I tend to ruin things when I drink."
"You don't want to drink away your nerves and worries on what could well be our last night? You must really be ready to die then." Tissaia seemed amused by it, but deep down she was anything but. This wasn't you. The usual light in your eyes was nowhere to be found. Instead, your eyes looked around the encampment as if you had already lost. And you had lost, in your eyes at least. You had lost Yennefer.
"I just realise I ran out of time and that it has caught up to me, and I might never be able to right my wrongs. I have a hard time coming to terms with the knowledge that that is how I'll die."
Tissaia inspected your features, picked apart all your little tells that she had picked up on over the years at Aretuza, and therefore knew you weren't done speaking,
"Then again- I've lived many lives, for which I should be grateful... but if they're all going to be the same... and if the alternative is another few decades serving daft and criminal lords at court, living an awfully boring life and not receiving the happiness I so long for, then... if I die... it is what it is. Though I hope it will be worth it, I’d hate to die in vain and have Nilfgaard march over my corpse."
"Being a mage is an awfully lonely life. It is a life of solitude." Tissaia spoke softly, "But that's the price we all paid when we made the promise and decided to serve the Continent."
"I don't think I had any other choice." You noted, thinking of the theoretical dungeon you had been locked away in ever since you had first stepped foot in Aretuza. In more ways than one, your chaos and aptitude for magic had both been your greatest gift and your worst nightmare.
Tissaia fell quiet beside you and she pondered over her words for a while, "Did I make you feel like you hadn't?"
A sigh escaped you, for Tissaia had promised you a safe sanctuary after what had happened in your village. You knew very well that if your ripple in chaos hadn't happened on that damned night, you would have been among the dead by sunrise. Shaking, burned, feverish and full of terror, you felt like the only thing you could do was accept the hand the well-dressed and poised woman in front of you had offered. The rest had been history.
"Within one night, I had lost it all and gained so much back in return."
"But at what cost?" Tissaia finished for you.
You could only repeat her words as you looked out to the group of people, which included some of the friends you had made at Aretuza.
"At what cost."
She felt your restless mind as you could sense hers, and it didn't take long before the prospect of what was to happen caused you to let more bittersweet words flow out of your mouth.
"If I didn't take my chances during all these years, then nothing will change if I live to see another day. It just hurts that I only now start to realise and regret it all..." Your voice died down and Tissaia pushed herself off the wall to take a better look at you.
When you looked back into her eyes, you realised you had never seen them with this much empathy. Although still, you could also see the disappointment in them. Knowing the woman you had looked up to most in your life felt that way towards you at this moment right now, made your stomach fall as it had done so over and over whenever she was giving you a hard time at Aretuza. The sudden feeling that washed over you made you shy away into that corner she had pushed you towards for years, and so you decided to elaborate, hoping she would see reason,
"Everyone I've once cared for died years ago. They died with the old me that night in the village. I'm not leaving anyone behind. So even if I do regret not taking certain chances, there's nothing I can do about it now."
Tissaia tilted her head, seeing right through the lie you were trying to convince yourself of, "Everyone?"
You couldn't help yourself when your eyes wandered over the people sprawled about the ruins, but they never found the woman you were looking for. Without asking, you took the cup out of Tissaia's hand and took a big gulp.
"Everyone."
Yennefer watched you with all the focus she could muster, her eyes flicking between your concentrated expression and the space in front of your hands, but no matter how hard you tried, no portal appeared.
"Sabrina- show her how it's done, or else we'll be here all week." Tissaia dismissed you without giving you so much as another look and was already making her way to the other side of the room.
"No! She almost got it!" Yennefer protested, having seen a sliver of a glowing and reflecting thin sheet floating between your hands, and hating how Tissaia's dismissal had made you frown in embarrassment and lose all momentum.
"Do you want to be next, piglet? You couldn't even lift a pebble with your mind if your life depended on it."
The girls fell quiet, their eyes nervously flitting across each other's faces. But not you, who took Tissaia's words to Yennefer to heart as well, "I don't think that was very-"
Tissaia finally turned around and stared you down for speaking out of turn, "You only speak when spoken to, pup. Or are you so desperate for me to forbid you from following classes all of next week? A shame. You could do with extra classes or you'd be one of Aretuza's greatest disappointments. Both of you." She said with a tone of finality.
You cowered slightly and dropped your head in shame, making Yennefer's face harden and her fists ball in rage.
"Good. You're more tolerable when you're quiet." Tissaia walked towards Sabrina and continued the lesson.
But from right beside you, Yennefer's little finger slowly hooked around your own, a silent reassurance that you two would always have each other's back. Even if you would forever be known as Aretuza's greatest failure.
☾ ⋆*·゚:⋆*·゚:⠀ *⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
The multiple firepits that were lit all around the courtyard of the Keep flickered, warming everyone who rested around, fast asleep. A few people stood guard on the castle walls. Their shadows danced around the ruins each time they switched places. Tissaia had ordered every mage to try and get some rest, to preserve their energy, to fuel their chaos. It made her feel like a hypocrite, seeing as she was wide awake. She looked across the grounds, her eyes falling on the many sleeping people and among them, her group of mages. Who was to say how many of the women she had raised throughout all her lifetimes would survive this battle? She would be the woman who had built them and who would be the reason for their destruction as well. It pained her, but to serve the Continent and keep its inhabitants safe, this was what needed to be done. Although they were all there, Yennefer was nowhere in sight. But she knew you were around by the thoughts keeping you up. Your bottle must have been empty, seeing as you paid little mind to shield her away from your thoughts. She could hear your insecurities, your worries, felt the new pain of your heartache and the old of all the lives before, heard Yennefer's name echo, saw the woman's face and smelt the familiar scent of lilac and gooseberries. Your mind was a mess. No wonder it kept you up.
Her eyes tried to search the people, to see if she could figure out where you were exactly. The light of the fires blinded her view, but she finally saw your figure when a harsh wind blew the fire to just a small flame for a split second. She watched as you sat cross-legged and your eyes stared deadly into the fire. A warm blanket was wrapped around your shoulders as a dazed look coated your face. You seemed as calm as ever, others would even pass it off as you just being tired, but Tissaia'd had you under her wing for years. She knew better.
Movement caught your eye and you watched your old rectoress approach, careful not to wake anybody. She sat down on the blanket next to you, her eyes following the flickering of the flames. She didn't say anything, and neither did you, not for a while at least.
Your voice was hoarse as you opened your mouth to talk,
"I lied."
The sound got faded away by the wind and the ambience of the night, but Tissaia had heard you nonetheless.
"I know," She spoke in return.
The fire crackled and along with some people snoring and the wind softly travelling through the ruins, it was suddenly eerily quiet. Nilfgaard was out there, somewhere, preparing. People would lose their freedom, their homes, their loved ones, their lives and your biggest selfish concern was if you had already lost Yennefer before the big battle could even begin.
"You haven't."
Tissaia's spoke up, letting you know she had read your thoughts. It should have made your cheeks rise in heat that you had failed to close off your thoughts, worried about what else she might have seen or heard, but instead, you accepted the reassurance.
"Yennefer is as stubborn as she is powerful, but what she couldn't do then, she has mastered now; bottling her power, her chaos... bottling her feelings." She emphasised.
You turned to look at her, but she kept her gaze focused on the fire.
"As have you." She then looked up to watch your reaction, "You have bottled your feelings for decades, and now that same bottle has exploded right into your face." Her words were stern, as were her hard eyes, but you knew her words came from a place of love, for she would otherwise never have bothered to talk to you to ease your mind.
Her answer came before you could even ask her,
"It is not too late. But first, we defend Sodden, you have spent multiple lifetimes wondering about the what-ifs, prolonging that unknown territory for a few days longer shouldn’t hurt." She softly grabbed your chin, her expression softening, "I need you focused and ready, so you can make me proud again, my dearest girl."
The tired smile on your face made her retract her hand, knowing you had understood her request of putting the battle of Sodden before your own gains first. You were a mage, after all, and you had to serve the Continent before serving yourself. It gave you a new sense of hope that after all of this, you would finally grant yourself the freedom you wanted. Even if that meant putting your heart on the line.
☾ ⋆*·゚:⋆*·゚:⠀ *⋆.*:·゚ .: ⋆*·゚: .⋆
It had been a nice sentiment, to want to wait for the inevitable until after Nilfgaard was dealt with, but Triss' words had released something in Yennefer and had made her see reason. She was not going to die before she knew the truth.
You had barely slipped into a troublesome sleep until someone shook you awake. Confused and alerted, your eyes shot open, only to see Yennefer hover above you, nothing similar to the last time she had hovered above you. Her face was stern and you searched her eyes for any sign of the softness you always so loved to see in them, but no matter how long you looked, they were void of it.
"We need to talk."
As if she could read your thoughts, she huffed and stood back up, offering you a hand, "Forgive me for seeing reason and not wanting to die still hating you." She softly rolled her eyes, but you could hear she spoke her harsh words halfheartedly. Still, it hurt to hear her speak of hate when talking of you.
With her help, you stood up and quietly tiptoed behind her as she led you down the hill to a more secluded place, where you could talk without your voice barely reaching above a whisper to not wake anyone up.
Suddenly she stopped, and you had to be careful to not bump into her back. It seemed as if she could no longer stop her thoughts from raising. Whatever was on her mind, she needed to get it off right now. Before you could react or express your surprise, her words surprised you even more,
"You hate me." She stated more than asked as she turned around to look at you with that hard glare in her eyes. It scared you how quickly she had built her walls back up and shut you out.
"No, Yen, not at all! I could never." You grasped forward in an attempt to hold her hand, but she took a step back, distancing herself from you.
"Somehow, somewhere along the line, I have done something incredibly stupid to upset you. I don't know what's more pathetic; me not knowing what it is, or you not telling me."
This time, it was you who took a step back, but Yennefer didn't want to let you walk away from this again and closed the distance. Now it was she who reached out for you, and you let her as your fingers grazed together as they had done days earlier in Aretuza's council room.
With a trembling voice, she spoke, "Y/N please, don't make me beg you." She searched your eyes for the words your voice couldn't utter. She exhaled shakingly, granting you the last chance to speak up before she knew she would be done, "What do I mean to you?" She clenched her jaw shut as soon as the words had left her mouth, ready for impact. But no matter how heartbroken she would be, she needed to know the answer before she could get her peace.
Tissaia's words still rang through her mind;
"Even if you were a beauty, no one would love you."
"No matter how hard you'll try, there's no one who will ever love a piglet like you."
"Do you think anyone would care if you died?"
She heard them even now, years later, and they had fed her insecurity ever since they had left Tissaia's mouth. Her former rectoress had planted the seed of doubt in Yennefer's mind that she wasn't meant to be loved and cared for. Tissaia had shown that much herself during her time at Aretuza. Yennefer didn't want to admit it, didn't want those words to be given so much power, but she had let them take over, even going as far as restricting herself from ever fully opening up to the woman she adored most, for Tissaia's words must be true; no pup would ever love a piglet. She had rather lived in bliss and in her own crafted fairytale than face the harsh truth, but if she were to die soon, then she needed to know.
Yennefer searched your face as much as she could in the dark, but your mouth stayed agape and words didn't follow. Growing frustrated, she raised her voice,
"Do I mean nothing to you?!"
You wanted to scream, to shout all that you had bottled up ever since first meeting this wonderful mage standing in front of you, whose chest rumbled with thunder and whose heart was bigger than she knew herself, but it was as if you had clawed out your own vocal cords. Sure, you had known what Yennefer wanted to talk about, but you had never imagined her to surprise you with it the way she had. You should've known better though, seeing as Yennefer was an unpredictable bomb whenever she felt like was out of control.
"You mean- I... you-"
Yennefer moved her head at your stuttering in a way that would have otherwise been seen as comical, but you were on the brink of tears. This was it. Not even hours ago you had acted all melancholic and tough when speaking to Tissaia, yet now, it seemed as if you couldn't even muster up the courage to just spill the truth.
However, your torturous dilemma was cut short when a searing ball of fire soared through the air and lit your surroundings.
Its final destination? The ruins of Sodden.
When you noticed how sparce the marketplace of Rinde was, you knew exactly who would be the one behind it. There weren’t any clear signs that Yennefer was behind the fact that half the townspeople were gone, but you knew she was in town and that meant it couldn’t just be a consequence. You had been friends with her over the years and although you didn’t see eye to eye on every matter, you had managed to stay close no matter how much time you spent apart, meaning you knew when she was around, even if she did everything to cover her tracks.
It didn’t take you long before you found where she had been hiding out, only to find that even if she wasn’t leaving her explicit trail, she certainly wasn’t hidden away. When you entered her home, you quickly found where she was amidst a scene you never thought nor wanted to witness. The missing townspeople were all there, but seemingly not imprisoned, at least not by physical chains, rather entwined with one another committing illicit acts that they were unlike to do if in their right minds.
You didn’t want to see the people of the town in such explicit acts but there was nowhere in the room to look without an intimate view of the butcher or the baker or the candlestick maker. You tried to focus your eyes on the only other fully closed person in the room- Yennefer. She sauntered towards you, a sultry look from below her lacy black mask. As she reached you, her sharp nails trailed across your cheek as she attempted to caress the plump skin.
“I did hope you would join us,” she crooned.
You took a step back to remove the contact from her.
“What are you doing?” You questioned. “What is this?”
A content smirk curled upon her lips. “You’re jealous, aren’t you?”
You couldn’t help but scoff at her comment. It felt as though bile rose in your throat as you thought about what she was doing to the innocent people, using their minds and bodies for her own enjoyment without consideration of her victims lives.
“What is there to be jealous of?” You said. “You shouldn’t do this, Yennefer, they are innocent people.”
Nonchalantly, she rolled her eyes. “Look around, there is little innocence anymore.”
Yennefer flaunted her hands around to the people forced into the unspoken acts around the two of you.
“You are no longer the Yennefer I once knew,” you said in a pained whisper, now lost to where the woman you had called your friend had gone.
