He could sense that Jez was too - without proper food, sleep and showers to keep them in their best shape it was hard to go much further without their abilities suffering.
Finally, tonight they'd found a clean body of water where they could at least rinse off the blood and grime. The water was freezing cold, but it was better than sitting in their own filth, practically allowing their skin and flesh to rot away. Jez had gone first, Renji naturally taking over the role of guarding their belongings and alerting her if danger approached.
Thankfully the next hour had been uneventful and with them both freshly bathed, somehow the atmosphere seemed less tense. Finally clean after nearly a week and in a fresh uniform, some of his energy was coming back.
A quiet voice called his attention and if he hadn't been paying attention he might have missed it. Curiously he looked over to the side where Jez rested. She lifted up her hair - cascading over her back now that it was out of its usual braided tresses. Ah - she was asking for his help in braiding it?
He'd never really braided anyone's hair before, save for his own and even then, it was nothing fancy - just to keep it out of his face for convenience sake. Although he did know how to braid in different styles, he wasn't confident he could pull it off on her - not to mention hers was so long and elegant, he worried if she might not like it.
Mmmm... well it didn't hurt to try. Getting up, he grabs his brush that he'd kept in his bag, and seats himself behind her. Gently he starts running the brush through her hair starting from her ends and slowly making his way up. Jez might have even longer hair than Unohana - perhaps the longest hair he's ever seen. He can't fathom just how long it took for her to wash her hair on a regular basis.
Despite his earlier concerns, his hands busy themselves with braiding, moving out of habit - gently pleating her hair into sections until he reached the end of her hair. A hair tie was placed into his outstretched hand and with a quick snap of his wrist - done. Not bad... for his first time braiding another's hair , it looked quite nice. He'd gone for a looser pleat, seeing that it was still damp and needed time to dry, still.
"There, done." He hums as he stands back to appreciate his own handiwork. Even pleated, her hair nearly reached her calves - it was amazing just how long she'd allow it to grow out.
"Will ya help me with mine too?"
