speaking of Dirtbag Thomas, I love fics where he is Just So Into His Sister
people have different headcanons about whether the whole trauma-driven incest situation was fully consensual on his part. I like it to be enthusiastically consensual. (not because I'm into incest in general in fiction- I'm pretty fictional-incest-neutral, really, where consenting adult characters are involved; it's not a kink OR a squick of mine -but more because I just love that angle on Thomas deeply)
give me Sir Thomas Sharpe, Baronet, grumbling about how the ancient pharaohs married their sisters, so he doesn't see why he can't. it's downright unfair, he thinks, especially when his sister is so very perfect and lovely and wonderful. yes, she has her unpleasant points, but he is very good at levers both mechanical and mental; he can usually push the right subtle "buttons" to make her stop (he thinks). Lucille might have to kiss him about it- and remind him that, as long as they stay safe at home, she can be as much wife to him as he likes
and he likes. boy, does he like. because he is, again, a pretty charming broken dirtbag

Which team are you on about Thomas and Lucilles last scene, "Thomas was saying anything he could to calm Lucille down and would have left her" or "Thomas just has the suicidal overconfidence to think unnegotiated incestuous polyamory was the solution"
The second one
I think he genuinely loves her, and meant what he said earlier- hurt him though it might, he cannot leave her. He sees a path out of the pit they’ve spent their lives trying to escape and he wants her to be free, too, after all she’s been through (for him, no less)
And she’s never denied him anything before- why would she now? I also think he doesn’t realize how dangerous she can be because she’s never hurt HIM and sacrificed so much to protect him
It’s the more interesting interpretation IMO

Rebecca (1940, because the netflix one is terrible)
Jane Eyre (2011, because Mia Wasikowska)
Mama (2013, produced by GDT and starring Jessica)
The invitation (2022, kinda cheesy but I enjoyed it)
Flowers in the attic (2014 tv series, yay mansion and incest)
The lodgers (2017, yay another mansion and incest)
We have always lived in the castle (2018)
Besides Crimson Peak, what are some good Gothic Horror films?
Ooooh, good question! Although I feel honor-bound to GDT to mention that CPeak isn't a horror movie; it's a Gothic romance by his own designation. He was kind of irritated that it got marketed as horror, actually.
Movies with similar vibes (though not always aesthetics) that I enjoy include:
The Others
Byzantium
I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House
The Haunting (1963)
House of Wax (1953)
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
Interview With The Vampire (1994- although the TV series also looks very good from what little I've seen)
The Innocents (1961)
Gaslight (1940)
Dracula's Daughter (1936)
There are a lot of vintage offerings on here, probably because Gothic is just a less popular genre for movies at the moment, it seems. Indeed, GDT cited some of those Classic Hollywood GothicsTM as his main inspiration for the movie- and for building the lavish, fully functional Allerdale Hall set

people thinking thomas didn’t love lucille drives me mad
HOW COULD HE NOT
HE. GOES BACK. FOR HER
he could have just burned the papers and run. he could have attacked her. but he had tasted freedom from the cage that their past trapped them in, and he wanted her to be free with him
almost nobody would have seen anything worth saving in her, understandably. but he did
because he loves her with all his soul. even when he resents her. even when he's letting her dirty her hands for him with minimal assistance because Close Your Eyes If It Makes You UncomfortableTM. I firmly believe that
