Happy Ostara/Easter/belated Spring Equinox 😊🌸🌿 🐰🥚🍫! . ✨Valar and Valier series (late 2000s)✨ - 🌳🌿Yavanna Kementári🌿🌳 Initial practice sketch, the final painting and a couple of details. . I now prefer to headcanon Yavanna as dark-skinned, but I quite like how this watercolour turned out - especially the gradation of the different greens in the dress and mantle, and the trees in the background. I also love Alan Lee's original drawing on which this painting is based 🌿💚 (swipe for the comparison! Original is black and white, coloured by me as a guide for the painting). . Some years ago I started a 'Valar and Valier' project in which I took an existing painting/drawing as reference/inspiration to draw/paint one of the Valar. So far, I've done Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos and Aulë, and I also have some sketches of Nessa, Vána and Estë. Hope to get back to this project sometime! . . 🎨Media: Graphite, watercolours, inks, ink wash . 🌱References: Alan Lee's drawing of the Celtic fae Ladies of the Land of the Young, for the book Faeries.

the valar, as rated by eonwe
Eonwe rates his bosses!
(these are not my personal opinions/rankings. I don’t mean to insult your favorite vala. even if that vala is Melkor)
Manwe: best best best best master-friend-father-person!!!! comforting to be around when you’re sad or upset. Infinitely kind. 100/10
Varda: Gives the best advice in Arda. The head to Manwe’s heart. Loves Manwe so Eonwe loves her. 10/10
Ulmo: Aloof. Cares more for Men and Elves than the other Valar, but is a friend of Manwe, and any friend of Manwe is a friend of Eonwe. Eonwe wants to know him better. 8/10
Aule: Makes great swords. Friend of Manwe. However, could not protect his Maiar from Melkor’s influence. 6/10
Yavanna: Gives gifts of fresh berries. There are no bird nests without her trees. 9/10
Tulkas: Rash, and can’t hold his tongue. Scarily intense about athletics. However, he’s damned loyal, which Eonwe greatly respects. Fun at parties. 7/10
Nessa: Also scarily intense about athletics. However, she can stretch you into a pretzel and get your muscles loose as a rubber band, and when she’s just dancing for fun (which she frequently does) she’ll dance with you and she doesn’t care if you or she leads. 7/10
Orome: Sometimes hunts birds with bow and arrow. Often moves hidden in the outskirts of the world where Eonwe and Manwe can’t see him. 5/10
Vana: Made bees, which make honey, which Eonwe likes. Also is generally very nice. Helped make the trees that nest the birds. 9/10
Namo: Spooky guy. Spends all his time in his misty, hidden halls. Cares for the dead elves, which is nice. 6/10
Vaire: who? eonwe’s probably seen her like, three times in the past millenia. She leaves Mandos even less than Namo does. Obsessively dedicated to her role, though, which Eonwe respects. 6/10
Irmo: Bringer of emotional peace for anyone who needs it, including Eonwe himself and many that served by his side in the War of Wrath. 10/10
Este: Gives a massage that will heal you from things that happened decades ago. If she and Lorien both work on you at once, you’ll wind up out of commission for centuries. 10/10
Nienna: Very wise and very kind. Gives advice comparable to that of Varda. If only she didn’t hide away in the furthest, most shadowy, foggiest, dullest corners of Valinor! 8/10
Melkor: enemy! hates Manwe! stole away Mairon! kept prisoners in horrible conditions and tortured them! killed many nice elves and men and dwarves! -500/10

Thy Own Being Only| by searchingforserendipity.
Art: For All Seasons | by the brilliant @caiti-creative-corner.
for: TRSB23 @tolkienrsb.
Rating: General. 15,715 words.
Characters & Main Relationships: Aulë/Yavanna Kementári. Ulmo, Manwë, Melkor, Nienna.
Warnings: Grief.
Over the aeons, Aulë crafts many beautiful things with and for and because of Yavanna. Most of them are very vast and complex - great Lamps, deep valleys, the occasional continent. Some of them, however, the Lady of the Gifts carries with herself always.

There’s a few things that stand out to me about today’s Silm Daily.
Firstly, it was very striking to me that agriculture is the province of both Aulë and Yavanna.
Of him comes the lore and knowledge of the Earth and of all things that it contains: whether the lore of those that make not, but seek only for the understanding of what is [I’m taking this to mean Aulë is the vala of geology and chemistry] or the lore of all craftsmen: the weaver, the shaper of wood, and the worker in metals; and the tiller and husbandman also, though these last and all that deal with things that grow and bear fruit must look also to the spouse of Aulë, Yavanna Kementári.
The reason this stands out to me is because of the Ents (whom we’ll get to in a few days) and the Entwives. The Ents come out of a conflict between the values of Aulë and Yavanna, between the natural world as a source of resources for craft and the natural world as so ething of value on its own, to be left undisturbed. But the Entwives, who love agriculture and teach it to Men, in this context feel like a union of the domains and interests and loves of Aulë and Yavanna; as though Yavanna is actively trying to reconcile those two things. And yet, the Ents and Entwives themselves ultimately split over that same conflict - whether to shape the natural world for a purpose, or to leave wilderness as wilderness whose value lies in its own being.
Though Tolkien himself was, I think, more on the side of the Ents and of Yavanna, I feel like the takeaway is that the comflict is inherently a very difficult one to resolve even when you are trying: the conflict between the needs and wants of Men and Dwarves[1] for things made from the natural world, versus the value of nature in its own right.
[1] Elves seem better at reconciling this, even Noldor - at least, we never hear the Ents complain of them, and from what Legolas hears in Eregion, stone appears to outright delight in being shaped by them.
Secondly, although it says, “From the beauty and bliss of Valinor the Valar came seldom over the mountains to Middle-earth, but gave to the land beyond the Pélori their care and their love,” it also describes how quite a few of the Valar remained involved with Middle-earth:
Manwë Súlimo, highest and holiest of the Valar, sat upon the borders of Aman, forsaking not in his thought the Outer Lands. For his throne was set in majesty upon the pinnacle of Taniquetil, the highest of the mountains of the world, standing upon the margin of the sea. Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world. Thus they brought word to him of well night all that passed in Arda; yet some things were hidden even from the eyes of Manwë and the servants of Manwë, for where Melkor sat in his dark thought impenetrable shadows lay.
Ulmo was alone, and he abode not in Valinor, nor ever came thither unless there were need for a great council; he dwelt from the beginning of Arda in the Outer Ocean, and still he dwells there…it was by the power of Ulmo that even under the darkness of Melkor life coursed still through many secret lodes, and the Earth did not die…nor has he ever forsaken Middle-earth, and whatsoever may since have befallen of ruin or of change he has not ceased to take thought for it, and will not until the end of days.
Yavanna also was unwilling utterly to forsake the Outer Lands; for all things that grow are dear to her, and she mourned for the works that she had begun in Middle-earth but Melkor had marred. Therefore leaving the house of Aulë in the flowering meads of Valinor she would come at time and heal the hurts of Melkor; and returning she would ever urge the Valar to that war with his evil dominion that they must surely wage ere the coming of the Firstborn.
Oromë tamer of beasts would ride too at whiles in the darkness of the unlit forests; as a mighty hunter he came with spear and bow, pursuing to the death the monsters and fell creatures of the kingdom of Melkor, and his white horse Nahar shone like silver in the shadows. Then the sleeping earth trembled at the beat of his golden hooves, and in the twilight of the world Oromë would sound the Valaróma his great horn upon the plains of Arda; whereat the mountains echoed, and the shadows of evil fled away, and Melkor himself quailed in Utumno, foreboding the wrath to come. But even as Oromë passed the servants of Melkor would gather again; and the lands were filled with shadows and deceit.
However, except for Ulmo, this involvement is occasional and limited.
The third thing I noticed is how hard it is to put the Silmarillion in an order that makes sense! We’re not even up to the awakening of the Elves yet, and already it’s talking about Vanyar and Noldor and Teleri and their relationships with the Valar! This isn’t one of my reorganizations, this really is in Chapter 1, “Of the Beginning of Days”. Chopping it out and moving it so ewhere else and trying to get it to mesh seemed harder. All my sympathies to Christopher Tolkien!
I guess a fourth thing of note is the description of Manwë. He’s the king of the Valar, but all his values and interests tend away from from power or control: air, which is the most free and amorphous and least controllable of substances; poetry and song, which require no physical resources to make. It does fit with Tolkien’s ideals that if someone has to have power, it should rest with the people who least want it. (Hmm, now I want conversations between Manwë and Finarfin!)

⬡ Prompt: Alternate timeline & twinkle in their eyes (rare pair bingo) | Varda x Yavanna ⬡ Synopsis: In an alternate timeline, there are two Elder Queens of Arda ⬡ Warnings: / ⬡ Drabble
Tumblr media
In another time, in another tale, Arda was ruled by its mighty and glorious Elder Queen who took no king, but another queen as consort.
Beautiful and bountiful was the union of Elentári and Kementári, bringer of light and giver of fruits. Together, they made all life bloom and prosper in the little kingdom that their peers had built.
From the heavens, Varda would smile down upon her and her wife's realm with love as burning brightly and ancient as her stars.
On Arda, Yavanna would raise trees and flowers in her glory, their faces ever turned towards the sky.

I need everyone to know that according to the Amazon show, Pharazôn
has a kid
named that kid Kemen, which is not an Adûnaic name or even an Adûnaic word in the first place
“Kemen” is a Quenya word meaning “Earth” with a context of soil/fertile crops (Kementári/Earthqueen is an epithet for Yavanna)
he named his son Dirt. literally he named his son Dirt in a language OTHER than the one he’s famous for championing

Summary
After his fall in Middle Earth the remains of Mairon are gathered in the Halls of Mandos. The Lord of Death puts him back together again, despite the Maias unwilling spirit and eventually releases him back to Valinor, under the supervision of Eönwë. Mairon rather wishes he hadn't. While Eönwë keeps a close eye on him most of the time he is not a prisoner, so he roams the land and encounters several of the Valar he had once betrayed.

Chapter II. Valaquenta, or Wow, That's a Lot of Names
Alright, so where were we - ah yes, Eru showed the Ainur the vision of the World (Arda), and a lot of them decided Arda is cool so they came down and started shaping the world. Sounds about right.
Now, what exactly is Valaquenta? Basically, it's a chapter where Tolkien introduces us to the divine beings, not in "general", like in the last chapter, but more personally - we learn their names, what they are like, what are their domains, and that Melkor is a b-(CENSORED). Though we already knew that last bit.
Valaquenta can be divided into three sections:
Fanboying Over Valar
Fanboying Over Maiar
Melkor Is A Bastard And We Should Not Forget That
"Noldo", you might ask, "with all my due respect, who the hell are Valar and Maiar?"
Valar and Maiar are two kinds of Ainur - an Ainu is a Vala or a Maia depending on their power; Valar are the rulers, and Maiar are the servants. There are seven Vala-Lords and seven Valië-Queens; so fourteen if put them together and fifteen if you add Melkor - but Melkor is an idiot so he doesn't count. Their names are: Manwë, Ulmo, Aulë, Oromë, Namo (Mandos), Irmo (Lórien), and Tulkas; and Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Estë, Vairë, Vána, and Nessa.
Well. Onto the main course! (if you've just heard someone sobbing in despair, yeah, that was me, sorry.) LETS LEARN ABOUT THE VALAR, KIDS! LETS RAISE OUR PRAYERS TO OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR MANWË SÚLIMO-
Manwë, also known as Manwë Súlimo, is the creator of skies and air and all that inhabits it. He's Eru's favourite. Eru's perfect son. Eru's golden child. He understands Eru like no one else does and often has private chats with him. When they only descended into Arda, he was second in might to Melkor, but, since Melkor is an idiot, he's deemed the strongest of the Valar. Manwë is married, and his wife's name is Varda.
Varda is elven favourite. Her surname is Elbereth, or Elentári, depending on which political party you will choose later in the years. She is Lady of Stars, and her domain is light. She and Manwë dwell together on the highest peak of Taniquetil (local holy mountain), and when they sit beside each other on their thrones, Varda hears all what's happening in Arda, and Manwë sees further than anyone else.
Oh, by the way! Melkor wanted to date Varda but she rejected him, because - you guessed it! - he is an idiot. So Melkor is scared shitless of her, as he should be.
Ulmo is the Vala of water, and he is positively Done. Manwë? Done. Melkor? Done. Eruhini? Do- oh wait, he loves those, actually.
Ulmo doesn't give a shit unless the world is literally falling apart. He doesn't wear "normal" bodies like the other Valar and appears in a form of giant warrior (borderline giant wave) which scares the Children of Ilùvatar which, in turn, makes Ulmo sad - because he loves them.
Tumblr media
Ulmo reigns over all waters and often travels to Middle-Earth. Elves believe his voice and words can be heard in rivers and streams. He was best friends with Manwë, but we don't know much about the current state of affairs - only that Ulmo rarely visits land or other Valar.
Aulë is a craftsman. He is second in might to Ulmo, and created a lot in tandem with him and Manwë. He made metals and minerals, and he delights in all handiworks - from little trinkets to majestic buildings. He and Melkor are ✨narrative parralels✨. Both of them are driven by the will to create something new and original - but, while Melkor wastes his power on envy and hatred, Aulë doesn't think himself greater than the others, is quick to help and to be helped. Melkor absolutely hates his guts. He's been destroying Aulë's creations since the dawn of time. Aulë first have been repairing them, but then grew weary, tired of Melkor's temper tantrums.
Aulë is married to Yavanna, the Giver of Fruits, also called Kementári, Queen of Earth. She claims author rights to the animals and plants and is as powerful as Varda.
Next up are Feantúri-brothers, Námo Mandos and Irmo Lórien, named so for the places of their dwellings - and then, their respective spouses.
Námo, the Lord of Doom, knows time, or, as Galadriel said, "things that were, things that are, and things that yet may be". He suffers from a disease known as "I TOLD YOU SO! I TOLD YOU SO, BUT NOOOO, WHY WOULD WE LISTEN TO NÁMO, AKA THE DOOMSMAN, AKA THE ONE WHO KNOWS LITERALLY ALL THE SPOILERS?!" His name is Námo, but he is often called Mandos because his home is called Mandos, House of the Dead. He summons all the dead souls and makes sure they heal accordingly. He's married to Vairë the Weaver, who weaves the history of Arda into her tapestries.
Irmo Lórien is a Vala of dreams and rest. His respectable place of dwelling is Lórien - the fairest of places in Arda. He lives with his wife Estë, Valie of healing, who sleeps by day and walks by night. Lórien is a place where many find peace and refreshment - not just Elves, but Ainur too.
Similar to Estë, but more powerful than her, is Nienna. To shorten the story:
Tumblr media
Nienna is Sadness and Grief, and she mourns every wound Melkor does to Arda. In fact, she started mourning long before the Arda even existed, in her Song. She spends a lot of time in Halls of Mandos, helping dead souls and mourning with them.
Then comes Tulkas the Valiant. Tulkas is. Well.
Tumblr media
(live footage of tulkas viping the floor with melkor, years of the lamps, silmarillion)
He's super strong and is absolutely unhinged. Dude knows no fear. He has only one mission: to beat up Melkor. Yes, you guessed it, Melkor absolutely hates his guts. He is married to Nessa, Valie of... dancing? beauty? Nessa is a sister of Oromë - Vala of Hunting. Oromë loves forests and loves Middle-Earth; he would often visit it, and he would often beat Melkor's ass, too. Orome has a sister, Vaná, Valië of Youth.
So, there are fourteen Valar - but if you thought we're done, ohoho! you're in for a wild ride, my friend, for the Valar are divided into Aratar (kings and queens) and non-Aratar (everybody else). There are eight Aratar: Manwë, Varda, Ulmo, Aulë, Yavanna, Aulë, Nàmo, Nienna and Oromë. Melkor could've been up there, but he's an idiot, so. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
(cries in dozen more of the Maiar)
Alright, kids. Buckle up, since the Maiar are beating up my ass and I have no patience left!
Ilmarë and Eönwë - chiefs of the Maiar in Valinor. Ilmarë is a handmaid of Varda and Eönwë is a Herald of Manwë.
Uinen and Ossë - Maiar of Ulmo. Ossë loves coasts and islands and delights in storms. Uinen is his wife, and she loves the deep waters. Ossë, chaotic bastard as he was, once almost joined Melkor and went unhinged, but, fortunately, Uinen brought him back to the light side with the ✨power of love✨. Ossë is still a tiny little bit unhinged and sometimes loves drowning ships for funsies, that's why sailors pray to Uinen to calm him down. Relationship goals, amirite.
Melian was a Maia who spent most of her life in Middle-Earth, married a major elven hottie, borned a daughter who was even a bigger hottie, and suffered from a disease known as "for god's sake please someone listen to a literal angel advising you", but we know nothing about that yet.
Ólorin, aka Gandalf, aka Mithrandir, aka The Guy You Definitely Know About!
AND NOW, FINALLY, LETS TALK ABOUT OUR LOCAL DEMONS! I'VE GOT FITEEN MINUTES UNTIL 15 H, CAN YOU TELL I'M SANE
Alright - so, of course, we've got our local Satan, Melkor, aka Morgoth, aka Bauglir, aka The Guy Who is Still A Bastard. He didn't have a particular domain - but he had part in powers of all the Ainur, and it was intended for him to help other Ainur excell even more at their crafts. Unfortunately, he spent all of his might to hate and envy, until he could do nothing else but imitate the creations of other Ainur. Still, there were many who followed him; most terrifying of them were Valaraukar, aka Balrogs - spirits of fire, demons of terror.
And of course, Sauron. What to say about Sauron?... Well, he's a bastard who looks up to Melkor. Mini-Boss. Mini-Morgoth. He does have cool fire-cat-werewolf aesthetic, though. If Melkor is chaos, Sauron is Order. If Melkor is brute force, Sauron is swift strategy. Sauron, though he's a Maia, is as terrifying as his Master, and it's better not to cross him.
Well, that was it! I've got two more minutes left until 15h - you'll get me next time, procrastination >:)

The Company of Thorin Oakenshield fell in battle, valiantly defending their newly reclaimed kingdom with all that they had and leaving their Hobbit behind to mourn a loss so profound that he found himself Fading in his grief.
Yavanna Kementári shall have absolutely none of that, thank you very much.

Yavanna Kementári, Vala of Growth, Giver of Fruits
She is the lover of all things that grow in the earth, and all their countless forms she holds in her mind, from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould. In reverence Yavanna is next to Varda among the Queens of the Valar. In the form of a woman she is tall, and robed in green; but at times she takes other shapes.

Favourite Female Tolkien Character Poll - Round 1, Match 33
Yavanna
She is the lover of all things that grow in the earth, and all their countless forms she holds in her mind, from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould…In the form of a woman she is tall, and robed in green; but at times she takes other shapes. Some there are who have seen her standing like a tree under heaven, crowned with the Sun; and from all its branches there spilled a golden dew upon the barren earth, and it grew green with corn; but the roots of the tree were in the waters of Ulmo, and the winds of Manwë spoke in its leaves. Kementári, Queen of the Earth, she is surnamed in the Eldarin tongue.
“I hold trees dear. Long in the growing, swift shall they be in the felling, and unless they pay toll with fruit upon bough little mourned in their passing. So I see in my thought. Would that the trees might speak on behalf of all things that have roots, and punish those that wrong them!
Nienna
[Nienna] dwells alone. She is acquainted with grief, and mourns for every wound that Arda has suffered in the marring of Melkor. So great was her sorrow, as the Music unfolded, that her song turned to lamentation long before its end, and the sound of mourning was woven into the themes of the World before it began. But she does not weep for herself; and those who hearken to her learn pity, and endurance in hope. Her halls are west of West, upon the borders of the world; and she comes seldom to the city of Valimar where all is glad. She goes rather to the Halls of Mandos, which are near to her own; and all those who wait in Mandos cry to her, for she brings strength to the spirit and turns sorrow to wisdom.
Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He dwel in Lórien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience.

The Queens of the Valar
So it has recently occurred to my friends and I that only two of the Valier, Varda and Yavanna, have queen epithets - Elentári (Queen of the Stars) and Kementári (Queen of the Earth) respectively. Since I love all of my beautiful Valatári (Vala-queens), I decided to create epithets for the rest of them too.
Tumblr media
♛ Nienna
In earlier versions of the legendarium, she was also called Qalmë-Tári (Death Queen/Mistress of Death), but that was back when she was the sister of Manwë and Melkor and married to Námo, so I don't think it fits her very well anymore. Though I have to say - very metal
Nainatári -> naina (verb) - lament
Tumblr media
♛ Estë
