Just to corroborate, that animal or object that cultivates and manages to obtain a human form but does not harm anyone would be called a spirit then? Could we say that spirit or Sprite works as a title that they obtain by achieving that and the skills? The animals and plants in that case are those born from nature?
Yes they would be called a spirit, but that doesn't make them less of a yaoguai either and they could be considered demons still. There are still some Yaojing that are considered evil and harm humans but these words can still be used interchangeably. I don't see a lot of people really being hard when it comes to calling something a Yaojing or a Yaoguai since they are so similar and thus people can still describe a good nature monster as a yaoguai or an evil monster as a yaojing. This is my personal take that yaoguai that do not harm humans are considered yaojing and yaomo are more like yaogaui that do harm humans to cultivate but this is not like implemented in actual use in mythos. There are still good or bad Yaojing depending on what you are reading and some media does show more sympathetic yaomo.
Tumblr media
We see this with how Wukong treats the tree spirits that held Sanzang for a poetry session and while they did not intend to harm Sanzang, Bajie and Wukong still kill them in case they would become demons later. This suggests that while spirits are considered to be mostly harmless and can even befriend humans they are still 'dangerous' and capable of harming humans just like anyone that has free-will.
Yaoming isn't really a title that is given per se but rather a name to offer a better alternative than just calling them just a Yaoguai. It's like a better classification but they still are a sub-category of Yaoguai. And that is where there is a lot of differences are met as Yaoguai are a concept that goes against the laws of nature, even if they cultivate alone and do not harm humans, they are still cheating as they are not probably going through the reincarnation cycle. They can be called Spirits but they are still yaoguai in the end of the day. It is not something to be 'earned' just what they are.
All animals, plants, humans, and all created is part of nature, but only humans can cultivate because they have finally made it to the human domain in the reincarnation cycle. If animals and plants cultivate then they are going to turn into Yaoguai and just depending if they cultivate through self-taught or through eating humans depends if they are considered just spirits that are considered good-natured or they are demons.

The one bit of Lost You Forever canon I absolutely must ignore is that Tushan Jing already knew Xiaoyao was a woman.
And look I know show could not have gotten away with it any other way. Both Xiang Liu and TSJ had to know, because otherwise the censors would have been after their ass.
But also, more than just being bi (though I think he is bi, as is Xiang Liu imo), I definitely see Tushan Jing's feelings for her embodying the famous TGCF quote: what matters is 'you' and not the state of you. His feelings wouldn't have wavered no matter who, or what, Wen Xiaolu turned out to be. And that part I think is canon, regardless of whether you ignore the fact that he knew her actual gender like I do or not.

Having Zheng Fa/西凤民国 related thoughts rn
I know it’s based on China and Taiwan, but I think it’d be pretty cool if they’re culturally less westernized. Like what if they preserved most of their cultural buildings and temples and what-nots? Maybe cultural clothing is more commonly worn in every day life? And more people practice the native religions (daoism, confucianism, folk religions, etc.)? Just some headcanons, I am totally not projecting lol
Also on a side note, love all the headcanons of Lang Shilong as a werewolf, but what if he’s a wolf yaojing (something similar to a werewolf, but instead of human-turned-wolf they’re wolves who cultivate to achieve a human form)?

So I really wanna add this to this post that recommends series that are "similar" to Inuyasha cause I feel y'all really need to hear about this one.
MONSTRESS
A dark fantasy that deals with racism, war and slavery. Set in a alternate, matriarchal 1900s Asia—it's about Maika Halfwolf a human-looking arcanic (I'll explain that in a bit) that struggles to uncover knowledge about her past and traumas caused by violence and the war between the humans and the beastial races of the world. Meanwhile she is also linked to this Eldritch looking Old God.
First thing I wanna say is that the art by Sana Takeda is gorgeous.
Tumblr media
So Maika is an Arcanic. They're composed of hanyou/half-demons, shi-hanyou/quarter demons and the descendents of these in this world (if you know Inuyasha or anything similar you'll get this terms quick). They're the result of the affairs of human and ancient. Their appearance can range from looking human like Maika, beastial like the ancients to something like both.
Tumblr media
What's an Ancient? The Yōkai/Demons of this world like the forementioned—they're immortal and wield magical power. They're anthropomorphic beings. Maika's grandmother the Queen of Wolves is basically Inukimi if she acquired Inutaisho's taste for humans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we got humans, the old gods/Monstra who are basically like kami, etc. And Cats—that are like the Bakeneko and Nekomata of Yōkai mythology that can have two-tails 🐈. I bought book one, which is a compilation of the first 18 issues and includes a glossary which better explains the race lore than me. Whole lore honestly is rich and and deep.

Some more pics to convince you

Another thing I wanna mention is that it has queer representation which is a +
Thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk

I was reading wikipedia about the Yaoguai and I got to that part where you said before in other asks that Yaoguai are supposed to wait for their next reincarnations to be human, and not cultivate to be one. And that only humans should cultivate, and that perhaps that is the reason for Yaoguai's rejection.
However, I understand that Wikipedia is possibly the worst source for information. I was wondering if you knew of an article that also had this information? I saw that the only source for that wiki article is just Chinese Myths: From Cosmology and Folklore to Gods and Immortals. London by Ni Xueting. But this book can only be purchased.
I don’t really know what you mean by “rejection” really. Like are you talking about how they are not humans in their current life? Because that’s just they lack enough karma. Or are you talking about the rejection in the sense that Yaoguai shouldn’t exist because they are going against the laws of nature? And in that case, they are to be considered unnatural, because they are technically cheating at life.
In any case, I’ll give you a Baidu link and also some links to other good books as well from al old tumblr ask. I wouldn’t say that that’s also and end-all be-all source but it is really good and very thorough. Honestly, you’re gonna find probably dozens of books about the subject but please keep in mind that lore and culture are not exactly permanent things, and there are interpretations within history that have different outlooks. What can be considered true in one dynasty could have changed in the next and whatever is popular carries on from then on. I’m trying to say is that you can face multiple answers to one question and that shouldn’t be considered too weird if you do.
This is for Yaoguai and there is for Yaojing too.
Always be learning more!
