Cannon
“He counted them!” Yamato threw his arms into the air dramaticlly. “I can’t belive- why would he- Gai stop laughing!”
Falling over, Gai roared with laughter.
It wasn’t that he was enjoying Yamato’s suffering, he simply couldn’t help but find amusement in just how angry the man got at Naruto.
“Gai, seriously,” Yamato whinned. “I’m so tired. Why did i have to be put on this job?” His shoulder dropped in defeat. “I could be in Konoha helping with repaires, or helping Tsunade-sama prepare for this stupid war.”
Whipping away some stray tears, Gai sat up slowly. “You’re needed here.” He tried to sound serious, but it was difficult when he was still laughing a little.
“I know, i know,” Yamato waved a hand dismissively and sighed. “I need to be here in case the seal breaks. I’m the only one who can keep the Kyubi under control. I’ve heard it a hundred times.”
Taking a deep breath, Gai slid in closer to Yamato and wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
“You’re also needed here for other reasons.”
“Name one.” Yamato grumbled.
“Well, i need someone here to keep me company,” he held up a hand between them and lifted one finger. “Someone has to keep Naruto from jumping off of the boat in boredom and we know it won’t be me.” Another finger went up.
Yamato huffed. “You would jump in with him.”
“Exactly,” thinking for a second, he smiled when another reason popped into his head. “I need someone to cuddle me on these unpleasantly cold nights.”
The sound of Yamato’s laughter echoed through the night air.
“You-“ Yamato wheezed. “I’m not cuddling you.” He shoved a hand into Gai’s face and pushed him away. “You’ll puke on me!”
“Puke!?” Gai gasped “name one time-“
“Five minutes ago,” Yamato answered before Gai could even issue his demand for proof. “And ten minutes before that.”
Struck by the truth, Gai flopped down dramatically into Yamato’s lap.
“Ah, i see how it is,” he threw an arm over his eyes. “My sea sickness is what brings an end to our budding romance. And to think, i never got the opportunity to take you out for that sushi date.”
A hand settled in his hair, offering him a small comfort in his time of woe.
“So dramatic,” Yamato shook his head. “As if you could get rid of me that easily.”

Training
Tenzo and Gai had spent the morning sparring together. It had been a very pleasant workout.
"Thank you so much for being such a wonderful training buddy on this fine morning," Gai said sincerely.
"Thank you, Gai-san for allowing me the honour of sparring with you," Tenzo said as he politely inclined his head. "May I take you to the yakisoba stand for some food?"
"Such a youthful offer cannot be dismissed. I would love to come with you to get some yakisoba, my dear Tenzo," Gai said, giving him his trademark thousand watt smile.
Tenzo swayed a little bit.
